This place feels otherworldly. You step in, soft jazz meets your ears. A friendly voice perks up: “can I help you?”. You turn to see a desk with a small person behind it that you’d somehow completely missed. You accept her help and ask where you can place your order. She directs you to a small counter with a shiny blue espresso machine on it and twinkling wine glasses hanging above. You wait at the counter but it seems like no one is there. So you ring the tiny bell and the sound mingles with the jazz but no one comes to help. You start thinking that no one will ever come, and just at that moment a man bursts from the back room. You stumble through a slightly confusing but resoundingly polite conversation and end up with two hot chocolates in a midnight blue booth. Time slides by as you survey the characters in the room: a man working away at his laptop in the low lights, a bright conversation behind you, and the warm brown eyes across the table. Before you know it the piano stops and the spell breaks. It’s time to go. The cold night air snaps you back to reality but that saxophone stuck in the back of your head keeps you warm inside.

Amazing cafe and restaurant and bar. Delicious strong coffee. Saw some fancy cocktails whizz past me. Nice jazzy ambience to enjoy a coffee, do some work on your laptop or a relaxing spot to have brunch. The velvet lounge chairs are comfy and the booths are cool too. Staff look smart in their waistcoats and are very helpful and attentive. Very Paris.

The worst cafe that I ever been in Melbourne before. I ordered “ice chocolate with almond milk” today. And the drinks that I get is syrup chocolate flavour mix with almond milk. Not even mix it’s just syrup and almond milk. Very very disappointed. I didn’t take the drink because I can drink it. Sooooo bad, bad experience. The women who’s work at the front (cashier) very racist might be because I’m an Asian. She doesn’t even say sorry I when tell her that I’m not gonna take the “fake ice chocolate” (she is the person who makes that bad drink) She should let me know if she didn’t know how to make a very basic drink.

Ordered breakfast on the 17/4 as it was next to our hotel. After 30-40 minutes we hadn’t received any food let alone any of the drinks that were ordered or even table water. It wasn’t feasible to wait that long as there was only one other small table with patrons. We asked for a refund and we’re told we would receive a phone call regarding this as no one on site is permitted to do credit requests. It’s been well over 24 hours and still haven’t received a call even after going back in to follow up. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone

The food was mediocre and the main hostess was on her phone most of the time. Our glasses were dirty so we requested clean glasses but instead got glasses that were only slightly less dirty. chicken risotto wasn't bad but it wasn't particularly impressive. My wife had a salad which again wasn't bad but it wasn't great. Half the items we wanted to eat weren't available including pizza and was our second choice. (Our first choice was their other restaurant which was closed for the season but we weren't told of that until we tried to order the food and discovered that Bird Basement was actually closed)

After ordering our breakfast (group of 4) we then proceeded to wait for our food. We waited so long, that 2 groups arrived, sat at tables either side of us, ordered, ate and left, and our food still hadn't arrived. After complaining to the staff 3 times during the wait (more than an hour), we were offered a round of hot drinks and told our food was almost ready. When the food arrived, the "aged cheddar" i had ordered as a side for my beans (and was billed $4 for), was literally a slice of Bega/Coon packet cheese. Service was atrocious, food and coffee were below average at best.

This is the worst cafe I have ever been to. I waited 40 minutes for a coffee and was then tossed out onto the street without any coffee because the one I was given was not the one I ordered, and when I pointed this out, the barista had a breakdown and threw coffee everywhere, started screaming and then grabbed a fistful of coins and tossed them at me and told me to get out of her shop. She's clearly mentally unstable and you shouldn't put yourself in physical danger by going anywhere near her.

  • Samual Mitchell

Based upon the fact that a milk coffee there is 4.20 and a black coffee is 3.90, but when I ordered it was 4.50 for a soy coffee. So basically you are paying for the white coffee and then soy on top of that, instead of having a black(3.90) with 30 cents extra for a soy, which would come to 4.20 (sounds like a lil marketing gimmick). What's the deal? Hmm seems a bit ridculous and capitalising on every inch. Also, I've been a barista for 8 years, wouldn't come back.

Well below average - The upstairs cafe for a hotel breakfast: A cafe in Melbourne that can’t make coffee? And when you have smashed avo on toast with poached eggs you don’t expect big clumps of freezing cold avo, obviously mashed the night before and straight out of the fridge - and it clearly had some rotten avocado mashed into it because it tasted bad. And, where was the feta? If you’re staying at a hotel it is definitely worth a short walk to go somewhere else.

Came here for breakfast as it was included with our stay at The Jazz Corner Hotel. Wish they were not so over-run - we were okay with the 30 minutes we were told it would be, but ended up actually waiting 1 hour for our food. It was delicious, but the wait had spoiled the experience. Kudos to the staff who were there, and kept their cool and professionalism while dealing with the time issues. Hoping you are able to put more staff on during weekends in the future!

  • Rosanne Cannella

Location ok but that’s about it. Bad service, took over 50 minutes to get food, wasn’t that busy. Few other couples also waiting forever. Food didn’t get any better. Ordered the ‘big breakfast’ - recieved: 1 scrambled egg, cold and unseasoned. Rock hard toast. Cold hard piece of bacon. 1/4 of a sausage, 1/2 of a mushroom that looked like Ghandi’s bloody flip flop. Reading other comments here we aren’t the first and probably not the last. Don’t go here.

  • Kobi Montague

Had eggs Benedict, the eggs were cooked perfectly. However, they use sourdough bread and you need a carving knife to get through it, using a butter knife is a challenge. Thick cut bacon was good. The Home made hollandaise sauce was ok, could use a bit more tho, and make it a bit thicker it was a little watery. Coffee was nice (had two cups!), nice atmosphere with friendly staff. I'll go back just for those perfectly cooked poached eggs! Good job! Monty

Been there on a Saturday for breakfast. We had to ask the table to be cleaned, and the whole restaurant tables were the same but the staff were on their phone. Had to wait more than 30 minutes to get our food and didn't even get served all at the same time which is unacceptable for a table of 4. Eggs were over cooked and the food was not very nice. Plus we got served coffee without them specifying which one was dairy free. Don't recommend this place.

  • Jae Hun Lee

Worst customer service ever. I was waiting for my food for 45mins but my food order didnt even in process. Because the waitress forgot to order it. It can be happen but after the mistake the attitude of waitress was terrible. She didnt even explain about the situation and just tell us “your food will be coming soon”. But the truth is she just make the order few seconds ago. I just had one long black for 45min and no food at all.

  • Sanjeev Kumar

I had my morning coffee there which was great and so I go back for next day. I really like the environment, then I ordered my vegetarian sandwich with mushrooms and avagado. As I am a strict vegetarian, to my shock I found a small piece of meat in my plate. I feel so bad that how they can be so unprofessional, the guy gave me $2 discount for that. This just made me hate the cafe and perhaps I will never go back there .

  • Marianne Johanson

Exceptional service, Talia was the most bubbly friendly young woman we had the pleasure of her serving us for the night. Music and atmosphere was wonderful, food was delicious. One of the most enjoyable nights in Melbourne. Highly recommend giving it a go. Even the chef was awesome and came to see everything was ok. Nice little place. Would definitely go back.

Coffee and Food is pretty good. But I had to wait for over half an hour for my breakfast to arrive. In a busy city like this this is unacceptable. And when I dared asking where my food was I was told "you can see it's busy". They didn't apologise at all or tried to make any effort. This is been a repeat time I was there and it happened yet again, so I'll certainly look for anther place to have breakfast.

  • Danielle Draper

Great spot and nice atmosphere inside but the wait time was ridiculous. We ordered toast. Just toast and it took half an hour to come out. It was barely warm and not very impressive. My friend also ordered a hash brown and it was lukewarm and not crispy. The coffee was ok but I wouldn’t be coming back here. I would recommend putting another staff member on to help get through the orders.

  • Ben Preston

Went to Brother Thomas today and ordered the Neapolitan Penne. Wow. Just wow. $17 for the serving in the photo, and I'm unconvinced the tomato sauce wasn't coagulated Heinze tomato soup. I'm not usually one to go to the trouble of writing a review, but I can't remember a time I felt this ripped off. It could be a one off, but I'd do your wallet and tummy a favor and avoid!

  • warwoods

Disorganized cafe - customers help themselves to juices and water from the chiller - we waited for service and ended up walking out. Waiter seemed to be going in circles looking flustered and other staff just walked around with no customer interaction. No intention of visiting again. Menu looked good but if you can't engage your customer and get an order they will leave.

  • Sexy Man

I didn't really mind the venue and location. Food was pretty bad and the coffee was terrible. I was one of the only people in the venue and the wait time was 20mins for an egg and bacon roll. I thought I'd try a new place over the Christmas/NY period. I guess youll find the bad while looking for the good. The food was also more expensive than usual.

  • Goran Velevski

I had meetings in the CBD all day today and thought to stop at Brother Thomas for some coffee and breakfast. I'm glad I did as they have my favourite type of coffee: filter but also offer lactose free milk for other types of coffee. The food selection is great and my poached eggs with salmon was cooked to perfection. Great little place.

  • James H

Really pleasant place for a coffee. Enjoyed the coffee taste; quite strong with a mildly acidic taste. Great in the early morning. The environment is super, with a subdued and chilled vibe (visited at 8:30am). This is surprising given its proximity to Flagstaff station (1 minute walk). Service wasn't memorable but still a great find.

  • clance peters

i went here after my wife died, angela was kind and nice and she didnt deserve to die, for weeks prior she kept begging me to get time off and go to this cafe with her, as my job gets me out the door early and home late. she loved jazz and music, and life, but i guess god has a will. rest in peace darling, the coffee here was good.

  • Andy Jones

We came for coffee and to feed our 10 week old son. When we needed to change him, we noticed there was no where to change him. The staff moved heaven and earth to accommodate us to be able to change him by giving us access to part of the hotel and provided a change mat as well. Amazing staff. The coffee was great too.

  • Rebecca “Bec” Smith

We called into this lil cafe after hopping the free tram on our way to the Victoria Market. We ordered fresh juices and toasted almond croissants which were amazing. If your gonna get these delicious almond croissants they definitely need to be toasted. Good service, over priced but it is what it is.

  • Elle r

I ALWAYS buy my coffee here. My favorite coffee shop in Melbourne and conveniently close to the park :) I am so lucky it's near by! They do such good coffees! I love you Jazz Cafe for a good flat white!~ They don't charge extra for strong too which is a bonus~~ Friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere.

  • E C

Great staff, great ambience. Burger bun was a bit stale and egg white was under cooked. Home made aioli good though! Oh! Didn't have pizza (what I came in for!)

Great place just at the ground level of Jazz corner hotel is a perfect place to start the day with a coffee. Plenty of great menu available for breakfast or brunch, this is a lovely place with friendly staff. However weekends could become really busy and long wait times.

  • Rita Parker

Dropped in here for lunch today on the spur of a moment. Ordered chicken salad and black bean and corn salad. Absolutely the best salads we have ever eaten. Fresh and crisp ingredients with just the right amount of dressing etc. Service was too. Would recommend. More

I had a breakfast bruschetta from here this morning and it was lovely! Just staying in a nearby hotel and this place offered affordable and lovely food. Also, the male waiter was very friendly and helped to compliment the excellent environment. Keep it up guys!

  • Dan Peyton

Had breakfast here for two mornings during my stay. Was right next to the Oaks where I stayed so very convenient. Breakfast bruschetta and smashed avo were both delicious. Only negative is the $3.50 cost for one hashbrown, or any sides. Yum fresh juices

  • Razia Makani

Delicious coffee. Good spot for people watching. Field mushrooms on sourdough was ok though. Fresh and good quality but lacked depth of flavour; something like feta or haloumi would be good with it. Having said that, i would definitely visit again.

  • Leah B

Great coffee! Amazing food. Every dish I ordered each time I was there was fabulous. Super fresh ingredients. Highly recommend the smashed avocado and the breakfast bruschetta. Thank you Jazz Corner Cafe for feeding this American great food!

  • Jacob Galway

Took 30 mins for food, even though it was basically dead. Then when the food did come, the hash browns were grey and the toast was basically stone. And who does a "big" breakfast with only one rasher of bacon? Not cool, would not recommend.

  • Michael Knight

This is a lovely place. You walk in and the staff are very accommodating. They help you with the ordering and menu. I can't recommend them enough. The portion sizes are great. I had trouble getting through it. We will be back …

  • Peter Sharp

Really poor customer service. The staff were grumpy and made it clear that they weren’t happy to be working. I didn’t feel welcome at all. Only gave them an extra star because the coffee was pretty good. Still won’t be going back though.

  • Dylan

Came here a couple of months ago. Coffee is meh, but the toasties are terrible for the price. The ones I make at home are better than here. Barely and cheese and just once piece of ham.

Disappointing. Small, luke warm meal. Half-arsed service - dumped my meal in front of me without cutlery and then ignored me when I asked for some. Plenty of other similarly priced cafes within 5 mins that are much better.

  • Andy Harker

Great coffee, fresh croissants, and if you're looking for something cooked I recommend the baked beans with a side of mushrooms! Also laptop friendly and talks to the Oaks hotel (next door) wifi without difficulty.

Pretty decent. Nice and quiet. Friendly staffs. Trendy with a country vibe from the staffs. too. I liked the scrambled egg. I prefer more butter on toast though. Still good on the staffs for the good vibe. Keep up.

This place has a varied menu that offers tasty and well presented food. The cafè is spacious and bright with different areas to dine at. The staff are attentive and the coffee has never disappointed.

  • Michael pollard

Good food and reasonably priced. The staff were friendly and polite, really nice location close to hotels and the tram line. I would happily go back again for breakfast next time I'm in the area.

  • Ceeann Russell

The most unfriendly service I've ever received in a cafe! Both female staff we were served by let this place down hugely. Food was great - but not worth the incredibly cold service it came with!

  • Vivek Dahiya

Went for a lunch meeting. Wish I could have read reviews before. Worst experience here. If you cannot serve vegitarian food then don't do it instead of putting a half baked awful bowl of pasta.

We ate upstairs at the restaurant, coffees were good. Had bacon, eggs, and halloumi cheese, the cheese was over cooked and tasteless but otherwise the meal was fine.

Food and coffee were ok but have stopped going there as the staff are quite rude and unwelcoming. Plenty of other, better cafes with good customer service.
