-----EDIT----- Since writing this review 3 years ago, some things have changed, although I can't say the response I received from the owner to be of any help. For starters, claiming they don't favor one section over another, in this case religion, is presumably false as at one point, they moved all 'new age' aka 'ancient ways' to the very back of the store where literally no one can find it. Sure the area was much bigger, but it was practically stuffed into a corner, so of course no one is going to buy and increase sales. Fast forward to current day and they now have it (extremely tiny) mixed with mythology. Really? Insulting much? Should then, with that line of thought, all religions be mixed next to mythology? And, I appreciate being called a liar in such a polite manner, however, at the time I had written that review, there was nothing on their shelves regarding learning Chinese. If they had stocked after the fact, then fine, but don't call a customer a liar if you didn't have the stock at the time. My recommendation, go to Indigo/Chapters. Respectful staff, and better thought out collection that leaves no one out. -----END EDIT----- Prices are high, so this is more of a window shopping kind of place. In their earlier years, their journal section was something to envy, with so much unique variety. Now, it's practically barren and they seem to hope that strategically placing two books to span an entire shelf makes them look well stocked... or that trendy minimalist look. No, it just looks like the area where you breathe life into paper, is dead. Other major bookstores carry a wide range of books about religion, as there's so many to learn about in the world. This place however REALLY wants you to only read about Christianity. Compared to the pin point size selection of other religions on the shelf, this is it's own metropolis. Diversity, eh? They especially (purposefully?) void their shelves of any books on Paganism. What's the most spoken language in the world? Chinese (Mandarin). What books/resource material does this place not offer? Anything on learning it. Like nothing. Not even a chart to hang on your wall. It's like to this store, this language doesn't exist. This store, though I get is more Indy like, is a hipster Instagram photo with too many filters. The variety isn't there, the choices aren't there, the young people working there are either really loud or depressed looking beyond belief. Other bookstores have options because everyone's tastes are different, but I feel here the books are gone through a filtering process and you only get access to the books they want you to see. I just really don't like this place.

The only bookstore left in the city to offer all of: books, magazines, CDs, vinyl, DVDs , Blu-rays, 4K Blu-rays, Criterion Blu-rays, knick knacks, home decor/accessories, musical instruments (I bought a ukulele here!), clothing accessories (satchels, scarves, hats, sunglasses, jewelry, etc.), board games, chocolates, baby clothes and toys... and more, I'm probably leaving something out. I've even seen nice headphones for sale. Not to mention the awesome Kid's section on the mezzanine and the adjoining Prairie Ink restaurant which has live music on certain nights. Their Readers Reward Program is excellent (easily pays for itself) and direct access to Grant Park Mall is gravy. LOTS of parking and generous business hours. A+++ customer service, special orders are easily taken care of and queue system ensures short wait times. You can even publish books here! What more can I say, Winnipeg please support local and shop here so we can all enjoy it for many more years to come. It really is one of a kind. Did I mention vinyl...??!

I live with mobility challenges. McNally Robinson Book Store is outstanding! Staff are so helpful. It's fully accessible with power doors at the front and an open entry from the mall behind. There's a terrific group of well designed display areas. Well lit with a very good selection of books that are well displayed. It's very easy to get around this bookstore if you live with mobility challenges. Staff at the checkout are patient and helpful. I lost my clip-on sunglasses and told them. They took this seriously and found them and called me so that I could pick them up the next day. The Prairie Ink coffee shop and restaurant is attached to the bookstore. Another excellent place. Staff are participating in the Bike MS fundraiser in Gimli, showing a commitment to the community. It doesn't get better than this!

The best bookstore in the prairies!! McNally Robinson is a wonderfully diverse bookstore filled with products that delight the mind. The amazing staff make McNally what it is, they know their industry inside and out and really excell at helping you find something to read, entertain, educate, or feed the addiction to the pursuit of knowledge! I highly recommend anyone who does nearly anything: go, chat with the staff, and ask questions. They have so much amazing knowledge and insight. I've learned so much and been exposed to so many amazing local and International authors at their book launches and event nights! I very much look forward to the classroom opening back up to see what exciting topics they find brilliant minds to present!

Just a question for Ross below. If you're so ill that you have a "medical exemption" for wearing a mask, what doctor in their right mind would say it's ok to go to crowded retail stores during a pandemic? I mean my child has asthma but can manage to wear a mask all day at school. If your that sick stay home. Stores have curbside pickup and delivery for a reason. Sheesh. 2 years into this and people are still acting like spoiled children. Anyways , from the start McNally's has always been one of the retail stores trying their best to put safety first. If you can not handle them keeping their staff and customers safe that's on you. Well done "heavy set" guy.

McNally’s has been my favourite book shop in Winnipeg for years. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I love that I can trust them to bring in beautiful and authentic product that supports craftspeople globally. I also love how they support local writers and writing communities. Lastly, I want to thank the staff for their diligence in keeping our community safe. Yesterday I witnessed a customer being rude and belligerent to staff as they were reminded of the mask policy. The staff member remained kind and firm throughout the whole exchange. Retail can be a thankless job so I want to say thank you and I appreciate you.

I absolutely love this store. To be honest, I usually order books on Amazon to find good prices and a better selection. To my surprise, this store had books that had been out of print which I was not able to order, all of which were within five dollars of the Amazon price. The staff is friendly, the store is clean and there's lots to choose from. No matter what genre you're interested in. I had low expectations, as I was looking for comic books and graphic novels. But I ended up leaving with an arm full of them. This is the best book store in Winnipeg.

Having lived in Winnipeg my whole life, McNally Robinson is my preferred book store. They have a wide selection of literature, and put on really interesting events and classes that provide education and strengthen their loyal community. McNally Robinson isn’t just about literature, check out the restaurant next door, Prairie Ink. Cooking has always been a passion of mine and I am always blown away by everything I have had at the restaurant. Haven’t tried a dish that wasn’t excellent yet! Couldn’t recommend this business more. Check them out!

  • Michael Farris

A fine independent book store. Of course, you will save money at Amazon but there is no substitute for browsing a well chosen collection in a pleasant setting. Staff are highly skilled. Talk to them. The Prairie Ink restaurant is a gem. A small menu carefully prepared and served. Call it "civilized dining" with a clientele ranging from hipsters to seniors with their grandchildren. They excell at the afternoon tea/coffee with pastry. Linger. Keep an eye open for local musicians and book launches.

  • James Firth

McNally is a fantastic local store with a large selection of books (and ability to order-in items not in stock) knowledgeable, kind staff who are helpful without being pushy. In addition to books they also stock puzzles, board games, films, music, and TTRPGs (including a surprising number of indie authors). The store is and has been a community pillar for decades. They host authors, have a wonderful childrens section, and the attached restaurant fills the store with a pleasant aroma.

My wife was pretty upset when I came home and see what this lady did to our gift card. I ordered 2 $50 gift cards, and she put $100 on each envelope. I said “excuse me, can you correct that, please?” And she said “ok”. I paid, she just ripped the receipt and gave me the whole things. When I opened them to write my friends name, I was like “….what the” I really have to watch what they do while preparing stuff like this Good luck, young lady!

Nice food and awesome stuff tons of book for all type categories and different languages from around the globe puzzles games and books for kids and all age group peoples. My kids really like the store nice and peaceful environment for book readers and well arranged shalf for all categories. Store is clean and sanitizer are available all over the store. Helping and friendly staff always ready to help customers awesome service

  • Marvel Robinson

I always love coming here. It's got great selection of books you know you're looking for and right next to them are some books by local authors that are similar and new all at the same time. The Bargin Books in the back left corner opposite the travel section is ky favorite place to find a new book/author. It's not all cheesy books, my first buy from that section was the first of Carrie Fisher's memoirs.

  • Ade

I had a pretty good brunch here, although they were quite busy as it was mother's day. The staff were friendly enough and the food was actually quite decent. The dessert was just alright though. Not bad, but nothing special either. If i was in the area I might go back there, but it doesn't really stand out. It's definitely a good idea if you're already in the bookstore, if only for convenience's sake.

  • S L

Tried hard to support a local bookstore but after so many errors on specific book orders unfortunately I am shifting my business to Chapters. They may not be locally owned but the quality of organization is substantially better. If you want a book or two this is a great place. If you're a serious reader looking to source multiple titles by various authors do not waste your time with this bookstore.

  • josie madison

j'aime ce magasin! everyone here is extremely kind, and the book clubs are superb! i always find well priced books in the bargain shelves that are usually more expensive at other stores such as indigo/chapters! cute cafe, and i love the little staircase around the tree :) i gave four stars because sometimes books can be priced a little high, but i love it here! SHOP HERE, AND SHOP LOCAL :)

  • rien

My family has only great experiences with this store so far! Ordered some books for curbside pickup recently and they told me it might take 2 weeks or more to get them ready because of the upcoming holiday + Covid = weeks of backlog. It was totally expected. The staff I spoke to on the phone was very informative and helpful. I actually got my order after 3 days. What an awesome service!

  • NorthernLights 362

Extremely EXPENSIVE Book Store. WOW…. totally insane. A person can buy brand new books 1/2 of the price everywhere else. I gave one star because the store was clean and the environment was nice… BUT… Someone’s getting rich off the same books sold at 1/2 of the price at other stores. So disappointing Oh I forgot to mention, they didn’t have the book I was looking for.

  • Paul Turenne

I absolutely love this book store and have been coming here forever. It's my Sunday ritual to visit first thing in the morning and buy my favorite magazine and look around at all the various lovely books and nice greeting cards. The staff is most helpful and very nice. My sister who lives in Toronto love to shop here when she comes to Winnipeg. The best book store ever!!!

  • Michael Kennedy

A truly great bookstore. Lots if knowledgeable staff, great selection of books, and a comfortable atmosphere to browse. The Children's section is great, my son loves it. Once you've finished looking at the books, grab a nice meal at the Prairie Ink Restaurant. I recommend the African Peanut soup. It has a totally different feel then other big chain booksellers.

  • Ryan Bollenbach

I’ve been a fan of McNally for ages! My brother and I have been going for the past 25 years or so, have bought tons of books over the years and it’s amazing to see this store is still thriving. It’s such a great ambiance at McNally and I always love browsing through the books and magazines. Prairie Ink is also a great time if you’re looking for a bite to eat!

  • Rob Caine

Did not accept a return on a perfect condition atlas the kid didnt need for school. Their policy is too strict. We were 6 days past the 14 day policy. Exceptions should be made especially in the busy back to school season. Terrible customer experience and all the frills in this wal mart of book stores will never be enough to make me walk into a mcnally again.

  • Ir Ke (Nickname)

Our favorite books store in the city. Spent here a lot of time in upstairs kid's section as my son loves books and prior covid they had a nice play area there (hope it will come back eventually). Stuff mostly helpful and knowledgeable. They have wonderful gift store with local crafter's work and restaurant with great dessert, but that's for another reviews

  • H Gullen

Love this store! The customer service ia awesome. A few years ago my Mom was looking for The Last Unicorn on VHS and asked the staff. They couldn't find it bit they kept looking and calling my mom with updates. Eventually they got a copy for her and she gave it to me at Christmas. It meant a lot to us. They definitely go the distance for you.

  • Brian Munro

I had lunch there today. I had a little wait to get seated but was offer a comfortable chair to wait in ,the hostess was friendly and welcoming. The waiter was also very nice he had a good working knowledge of the menu and I took his suggestion and had a bowl of their vegan soup it was very good. Over all I was very pkease with my experience.

  • Richard

Best bookstore in the city. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is very comforting. The bargain section is huge and has really good books in it! The location is a little bit inconvenient for me, but it’s worth the travel if i’m looking to expand my home library! Highly recommend, even if you aren’t a book lover.

  • Natasha Derksen

Brought back an item in original bag without using it. They would not give me the return, but instead store credit because it was three days after the end of the return policy. I was told, "The return policy is 2 weeks, not 2 weeks and 3 days." I think I might try other stores and hope they have more understanding.

  • J M

Suppose to be open until 6 on Sundays. I made a special trip into the city only to be told they were closing an hour early to do inventory. I was quite annoyed as it was 4:50. No apologies, just …”It was posted on our website!” Who checks websites? Who does this? Highly recommend doing your inventory after hours!

  • Kjell Anderson

GREAT bookstore. I slightly prefer the Saskatoon location because the set up feels cozier. I also appreciate the chairs in Saskatoon, and the larger folklore/mythology section. But all in all, both branches of McNally Robinson are great bookstores with a broad selection that still manages not to feel generic.

  • Terry MacLeod

It is the best bookstore in the entire city and province by far. Their onstage author interviews are deeply illuminating. Their Cafe is great with lovely food, affordable wine and free live music. Great staff. Amazing magazine section. Terrific kids' department. Lots of nonbook gift buying opportunities.

  • Sebastian Hodder

Placed an order in early November, still have not received it (December 18th) and no one is responding by email or responding their phone. Will not be ordering from them again. We could have gone with any other chain store, however we wanted to support local and we are very disappointed with the service.

  • Susan Moffatt

McNally's is a great place for the communiy to gather, whether to browse, have coffee or a meal, take in one of the classes or an event like a book launch. And I have enjoyed doing all of those on a regular basis! The staff are just great and its simply a relaxing and enjoyable place to be at any time.

  • Juanita Pomareda

Wonderful space to spend the aternoon. You could start with lunch at Prarie Ink, followed by a book hunt for a couple of hours. Don't forget the music section. Show your rewards card and get a discount. Say goodbye to the lovely clerk and check out the calender on the way out. ✔ …

  • Brett V

Wonderful independent bookstore with a fantastic cafe. Make sure to have the peanut soup - it’s a hit! They have a wide book selection and an impressive children’s section setup on the second floor. Many gifts can also be found (S’well bottles, honey, clothing, accessories etc.)

  • Luna D. K.

Bookstore of its own kind! I love how local it is - they sell local books that you won't see else where as well as local products. Good selection of boardgames as well. Located inside the bookstore is Prairie Ink restaurant which is also a very decent restaurant to try out.

  • John D

Hands down my favorite book store in town! Employees are friendly and efficient. Store is laid out really well, so books are easy to find. They have a wide selection of books and magazines and if they don't have something it's really easy to get them to order it for you

  • Paweł Głowacki

I come with a strong bias, but I think it could use a wider selection of science and engineering books. Although typical bookstores always lean towards the arts, so what should I expect? Otherwise their service is good, and it's nice place to visit every now and then.

  • Megan Wegert

I love this bookstore! It has one of Winnipeg's best casual dining restaurants complete with a pastry chef. It sell boardgames, books, fantastic giftware, music and bargain books. The staff is so knowledgeable and they're always able to answer my questions.

  • Aiden Christopher Kahanovitch

Great local bookstore. The staff are passionate and always helpful. Their membership program is great if you frequent the store, they always curate amazing books and feature local creators, and the community classroom space is a wonderful addition.

  • Mindy Brown

The staff at McNally Robinson are amazing. I called earlier in the day and asked about special ordering and when I went in they were able to assist with no problem. I am very impressed by their kindness and helpfulness. Fantastic place to shop!!!

  • Douglas Thompson

I'm always blown away by the amount of vinyl they have in their store. More selection that some of the music stores in the city. I always find myself losing track of time when i'm in McNally. Great independent store with an amazing selection.

  • Nick Pizza

Amazing selection! This book store is local and has a huge selection. Really enjoyed the store as well. There is a care restaurant there and it has great desserts. Will for sure be back as it's supporting local and just overall a nice place

  • Kody Kallert

This bookstore is one of the most beautiful in Winnipeg. The employees are so kind, nonjudgmental, and helpful. The books are beyond beautiful and organized. I don't even read graphic novels but their graphic section is so beautiful.

  • Susan Stutski

I have always loved going to this book store. I love everything about it, from the staff, to the "Prairie Ink Restaurant, to the book signings, and it is just an all around great place to look for and buy books, or very unique gifts.

  • J E

I love this book store. The Winnie the Pooh corner and separate children’s area on the 2nd floor are lovely. They carry unique toys and great baby gifts. The onsite restaurant is lovely and the music in the evenings is a nice touch.

  • Philip Mackie

Booksellers of course, and promoters of book writers while supporting communities of every ethnic persuasion. ĺn a world of uncertainties the team of staff bring insight and assurance to all who need it. Best wishes to all. Cam.

  • Lindy Clubb

Terrific help with holds and orders and purchases at McNally today, from a tall young good hearted man. Prairie Ink excells at lattes and politeness to fuel the long drive back to the country for me. Now to settle down and read!

  • kevin manansala

Great service, normal carries copies of the books. But if the book just released beware that it might be sold out. The area around the bookstore must have lot of readers. Has a nice selection of books. Overall good experience.

  • Ross Coe

Tried to shop here and have a medical exemption for a mask and even had a landyard around my neck showing that and was kicked out. The only store that would not accept it. Was kicked out by a tall heavyset guy with glasses.

  • Susan Cowan

Love this place... Saturday date night for hubby and I whenever we are in the city..great books..as usual. Many Canadian and local Manitoban authors highlighted. Restaurant is lovely with great beautiful desserts.

  • Craig Woodward

A Winnipeg treasure! I'd like to call out the person responsible for the TTRPG section, they are doing a fantastic job of bringing in a broad selection of game materials from both large and small publishers.

  • Emma Banck

Very nice products and events. I find them to be better stocked than chapters time and time again. The staff are incredibly helpful and will actually recommend books to you. Can’t beat this local business.

  • Marina Havard (Marishinka)

Love this store for so many reasons. Just a great community board, the upstairs kids section is my kids go to. Bought our ukulele from here and lots of great jewelry and funky bags. The books are a bonus.

  • Michal Brichacek

Wonderful bookstore! Great selection of books and other little cute gifts. Friendly staff. Very neat design inside the store, and a little cafe inside as well. Convenient location at Grant Park Mall.

  • Leslie Kaufman

Wonderful selection of books, magazines, home items, gifts, children's books, games and toys. Warm, calm atmosphere. Very pleasant and helpful staff. Also a great restaurant! I just love going there.

  • Night G

The nicest book store you can enter. So classy and beautiful. I do find the prices to be a bit insane which is why I rated it 4/5 . Other than that, staff doesn't talk to me which I enjoy , haha.

  • Miles Thiessen

Great book store! Literature, history and languages to SciFi, fantasy and manga ðese guys have it all! Ðere's also a great children's section up ðis staircase built to look like a tree trunk

  • Ted Rennie

Staff was very helpful, leading us across the store to the section we had asked for. Shopping at McNally-Robinson is always a pleasure. The decor and display of books is very inviting.

  • Joshua Mitchell

A nice independent book store, with a good selection of literature, SciFi/fantasy, manga, boardgames, and kids books. The attached cafe is also a nice place to get lunch or a snack.

  • Donna Rutledge

Had an early dinner at the cafe. Our waitress was very helpful. She attempted a flat white coffee which wasn't on the menu. She gave me substitutes for my salad. Food was great.

  • Scott Irvine

Best bookstore in Winnipeg, and one of my favourites in Canada. Such good selection of everything, especially local literature, and the Prairie Ink Cafe is always good.

  • steve erickson

Being able to hangout at a great bookstore with an amazing restaurant and wine list is not something you get to do all the time. Much better than having a Starbucks.

  • Triple Threat

Love this place! Sometimes the lines get backed up but overall everyone is helpful. One of a kind local bookstore with good selection for all ages and interests (:

  • ToniZ

Independent bookstore with big box store size and selection. Support the local businesses! Great cafe. Nice selection of vinyl LP'S. Lots of parking. Love it!
