LARGE STATION IN THE MELBOURNE CITY LOOP Melbourne Central Station was originally called Museum Station but a lot has changed over the years (including the closure of Daimaru, the key anchor retailer at Melbourne Central and the opening of the new museum next to the Exhibition Buildings). Melb Central has two concourses (platforms 1-2 on the upper and 3-4 on the lower.) You can access trains on all lines from this station. It sits below a very busy shopping precinct and you actually enter the station through the shopping centre. It gets incredibly busy at peak travel times. Lots of services located in the complex including supermarkets, food courts, retail clothing, drycleaning, cinemas... Get off here for RMIT City Campus, State Library, Myer, David Jones, Emporium and restaurants at the top end of Swanston Street. There are always Metro staff on site and there are lots of ticket machines to top-up / issue a Myki card. Pictures attached are the somewhat obscure entrance from Elizabeth St (Swanston / LaTrobe Street entrance is much more visible)

Another of Mebourne’s 40-year-old underground stations, with platforms on two levels. Easy to find - look for Woolworths Metro at one entrance, and Coles at the other - both, plus station entry are from the Lower Ground level of Melbourne Central. The Elizabeth St road-level entrance is partially obscured by the current (July 2019) building works on the Melbourne Central office tower, but the station is still accessible via the small escalators just to the north of the renovation facade, behind the Bank of Melbourne branch. Because it houses one of Melbourne’s largest shopping centres on its roof, it’s also the station where the least people seem to be aware of escalator etiquette. Please, for the sanity of the thousands of city office slaves who pass through every day: keep to the left of the escalator if you’re not actively moving up or down. Left for the lazy, right for the runners!

  • Hello

Melbourne Central railway station is an underground station on the metro network in Melbourne, Australia. It is one of five stations (and one of three underground) on the City Loop, which encircles the Melbourne CBD. The station is under La Trobe Street, between Swanston and Elizabeth Streets, on the northern edge of the CBD. The station is named after the Melbourne Central Shopping Centre which it is beneath. It feeds into Melbourne's main metro network station, Flinders Street and also Southern Cross Melbourne's main regional terminus. In 2017/18, it was the third busiest station in Melbourne's metropolitan network, with 15.859 million passenger movements.

What a great station, wow there is so much going on. You can’t have the excuse of being hungry here with all the food outlets, and there are 2 grocery stores (Coles and Woolworths). The trains never seem to stop, they are always coming and going, and from here you can depart to so many different destinations. There are myki machines dotted around the place to check your balance or to top up, and we found the extra- large storage lockers (located near the Skybus departure terminal) really handy for storing our suitcases on our last day while we had a walk around town, without the hassle of having to drag your bags everywhere with you.

One of Melbourne's busiest stations, being in the middle of the CBD's food and shopping district on Swanston Street. If you need to visit Melbourne Central Shopping Centre, luckily it is located within the shopping centre. There are many services and they are mostly on time but are delayed sometimes. It is usually very crowded with the majority of people boarding trains here during peak hour. Do not use the toilets, they are disgusting. It's better to use the toilets within the shopping centre itself.

Melbourne Central is a lively railway station, highlighted by the old enclosed tower ( called the shot tower, a bullet making facility from 1880's) around which the station and the shopping area is built. This is complemented by the marionette clock chiming 'Waltzing Matilda' every hour. Full of utility shops and food & beverage outlets, it is a bustling lively place with exits to three key roads where trams ply. Good for getting out of the train to get a feel of Melbourne.

Would be great if it were 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Probably has the potential of being one of the busiest stations in Australia. Access to some very good shops and a very high quality food court below ground level. Supermarket near the station entrance is extremely convenient and staffing levels nearly always means it is a very safe environment. Coffee station on way down to trains is very convenient and high quality coffee.

Melbourne central is one of the train station in the city loop and experience a high frequency of train.. It's a good station, it got people on site to help(customer service assistant), toilets and alot of shops in the upper part of the station for shopping and buying things and stuff along with a high number of small restaurant and cafes... The stations have good architecture structure with a historical importance...

Melbourne Central shows her age but is still functional and clean. The destination displays are easy to find and easy to read. The station is within Melbourne Central shopping centre and is open all the time that trains are running. There are regular police/pso patrols and trouble is unusual. It's been a while since I used this station but the muscle memory took me to the right place on platform 4

Great futuristic station ! Definitely Modern Class with the Big Clock ️and metal work up ahead and huge shopping ️ precinct near by. However nothing can beat Circular Quay station Sydney, Australia . The design and the views immaculate … The stunning Opera House and Harbour bridge views upon exiting stimulates the sensory experience and visual field . #Travel

Somewhat clean. Don't go to the toilets in the station unless your really desperate. Upstairs from the station is clean however. Beware of ticket inspectors, they are frequently stationed outside the barriers ready to book people without a concession card. Reasoning with them is usually pointless. If you get booked and feel that it is unfair, deal with the department of transportation instead.

The arcade above the station with so many levels is amazing!! For a quick wait just go down to the level Coles is in to get a drink & a bite to eat. For a longer wait,go do'nt be scared as you can go to another level & to the cinema or a restaurant as you won't be bored as other stations there's nothing to do!! It's underground but I like the dark so the platforms are still safe.

Great train station, it is clean, there is a speaker for the next train time and there is many vending machines to get something on the spot as sometimes when I am in a rush to catch the train I don't have time to go shopping for foods or drinks so I get something to get from the vending machines. The prices are a little bit high but overall this station is great.

  • Helen B

Great place with plenty of variety for shopping and eating. Easy to get around the multiple floors. Take a minute to watch the clock display and look up to see the spectacular structure. Signage could be better to show what's available on each floor for the new visitor. Easy to catch a train with the details easily visable before you go through the turnstyle.

  • Chrissy Kerssen

Well organised, with many staff members always on duty. Easy lift access and signage for travelling with prams. Display monitors are great and easy to locate and read. The ramp into the first carriage is super handy when travelling with a pram and is much welcomed. A good amount of seating, and food/drink availability

One of the worst public transport systems I have seen in my life, trains are extremely slow and generally run every 20 minutes with constant delays especially on rainy days. The prices for the transport are also extreme compared to other countries and for a trip you would have to pay 4.20$ :(

  • Alex Z

The trains are extremely slow and only go every 20 minutes with extreme slow downs. The station itself of very dirty and hasn't been renewed for very long time. You also can not expect anything such as free wifi inside of trains or on the station despite crazy fees for traveling.

  • Moni V

Melbourne Central station is usually extremely busy, but is generally pretty safe and clean. You can get here by going to the basement floor of Melbourne Central Shopping Centre. You can also enter via Elizabeth street. Platform 4: Alamein, Belgrave and Lilydale lines

  • Kenneth Wang

So handy and convenient location, close to all amusement, shopping mall, restaurants, train station, like the business hotel design while the rooms hust suitable for short stay, my wife feels the bed is too firm for her. Great buffet breakfast and restaurant.

  • Me M

Frequent trains and vast place - Our vacation to Melbourne was no less than a excitement - Geelong to Melbourne covered by frequent trains - During night time also this place offers a lot of security and station helpdesk was operational

  • zhen

Poorly signed for entry and route information, Google doesn't show what platform to go to for different line so allow plenty of time to find it if you haven't been here before. Stairs and lifts are not kept in very nice condition either

  • Billie D.C

So bad, I want to give it a zero. Blaring advertising, late trains, lack of train timetables. Poorly organized. Entire station is dirty and trash everywhere. The bathrooms are so poor it's no wonder people piss in the lifts. Messed up.

  • Alyssa Susanto

Not a bad shopping centre, very convenient and centrally located. Has a variety of shops, a basic coles (smaller than others) and is connected to Emporium via footbridge. Station is also conveniently located within the complex.

  • Hamish Jones

A sick underground station located right in the heart of Melbourne CBD! Oh and trains run here often too, the new HCMT's are just stunning! The shopping centre bit is cool as well as the Shot Clock tower! Highly Recommended!

  • Chamath Kawishka Kuruwita

Well organized place. Trains are on time. And surrounding well planed to spend the waiting time for train. Love the tourist attractions. Specially the clock. But the ticketting system is bit less practicle for tourists.

  • Rachael B

Central has good climate control but is always flocking with Authorised Officers. Have your student cards ready if you're getting off here. Go slow and the station layout becomes quite straightforward.

  • Arun Chandran

A very busy station in the city loop. There are many food options nearby. The staff is friendly and always helpful. There are plenty of trams from both Swanston Street Exit and Elizabeth Street Exit.

  • Andrew Rodda

Looking worn out. Incessant fox news and ads on screens only lessens the experience. Rail leaning 'benches' are no replacement for proper seats. Avoid the toilets, they are a disgrace.

  • Jess Hast

Pain in the butt to get to the lower platforms and the loos are absolutely rank. The power points in the wall are great if you're waiting for a train and your phone's dying.

  • Mohammed Alsaif

It experience a high frequency of train. Good station with people in site to help. Clean toilets and it got lost of vending machines. The upper level is for shopping.

  • M Nouman Bhatti

the best train station in victoria as per me shopping center build on top of train station so that u can have ur meal shopping movie and public transport at one place

  • senthil kumar

Very vibrant station with lot of shops, groceries and of course trains and trans outside. But the photo is from lockdown says and you can see how quiet it was.

  • James Clarke

Trains come regularly, plenty of shops and restaurants to hang around at, there's a cinema, which is not overly nice but you can grab lunch and watch a movie.

  • Metro Beach7

Great, underground train station with lots of stores, food chains and a cinema. The station is near RMIT, the State Library and Chinatown is not too far away.

  • Syed K

The Metro train station underground is very poorly maintained. Escalators and platforms are not lit properly and remains of a country living under sanctions.

  • Nadia Natt

They always refuse to give you a mask even when you honestly tell them you don’t have one and you will miss your train if you go buy some.

  • Akshay Rana

It's very busy during peek hours but very convenient location. Melbourne central has all the major outlets located outside train station.

  • Kayze Lyn Pe-il

Lots of retail shops, restaurants, and other services provided. Very convenient for commuters as everything is almost available.

  • John Halket

Good station if you need somewhere to go on a rainy day and don't want to walk far for restaurants or a place to drink.

  • Dean Le

Busy during peak, large interchange, connected to the Melbourne Central shops and in the middle of the city.

  • shaun myers

  • Grayden Park

Nice central place to shop for just about everything. Good mix of big brand stores and boutiques.

  • N L

Escalator work, always hectic, always get checked by the gate keeper. Simply hectic place.

  • Ali Al Alawi

A remarkable station where the clash of history and modern design creates a great blend.

  • lalit joshi
