Came for brunch on Saturday. A waiter cleaned a table for us but as we went to sit the owner insisted we sit at the tables on the other side so we would be at a table for two instead of four. So we moved. Then they sat two people at the table of four anyway. Our table had water all over it and I had to ask for an extra napkin to clean it. A waiter came over to us to take our drinks order and picked up the jug of water from the table next to us that some patrons had just finished up on and unceremoniously plunked it on our table and told us he would bring us glasses for it. We never received said glasses for the left over water. I ordered a Bloody Mary. When it came out the first thing I noted was that there was no celery, which for anyone who has had one before would know, is an integral part of a Bloody Mary. My step mum asked for a sip because she’s never had one before. Her reaction wasn’t great. When I tried it I realised why. Whoever had made it had used too much Worcestershire because it was too brown and had also used a heck of a lot of Tabasco sauce and it just burnt the mouth and throat. It was undrinkable. I told the waitress it wasn’t made properly and to take it away as I didn’t want it. I declined her offer to have it remade because it was obvious that they had no idea how to make a decent cocktail. Then a second waitress came out and I had to explain it all again. Then the owner came. Yes he is friendly but I felt he was being too familiar. He wasn’t taking no for an answer and insisted he would ‘make me a good one’. What happened next was just disgraceful. He came out with the vodka and tomato juice in a glass, a bottle of Worcestershire and a bottle of Tabasco sauce. He explained they didn’t have celery. Now that makes me angry because if you don’t have an ingredient for a cocktail, don’t put it on the menu. He then proceeds to ask me how much Worcestershire and Tabasco sauce I want in it to which I reply that I just want it made the way a Bloody Mary is supposed to be made. He was very condescending. Not sure why he didn’t bring out the vodka bottle and ask me how much of that I wanted. This place was so unprofessional it was like an episode of Fawlty Towers minus the witty retort.

I usually go to another cafe in Degraves Street...but I thought I’d try something different because I was with friends for dinner before a theatre show. The menu was pretty much what I expected & I am used to the over inflated prices of cafes in the trendy streets and laneways of the CBD. The prices were pretty much the same for mains & pasta unless it was a steak or seafood so I pretty much knew what to expect; or so I thought. The mains were all acceptable portions but I was stunned when the pastas arrived. It was in a bowl style dish and me describing the portion size as an entree would be extremely generous. I’ve seen Kids menu pastas bigger than this. It was embarrassing considering the size of the mains for the same price ($25) and I know for a fact the pasta portions are an acceptable portion for the same price at other venues in Degraves Street. My Spaghetti Carbonara was drowned in Carbonara sauce and smothered with Parmesan cheese making it so rich that it was actually difficult to finish and I was very hungry. The drinks comparison for the same price didn’t make sense either. Some of us received a soft drink in a massive jar with a handle while others received a 250ml bottle of mineral water that would’ve barely been acceptable for a child. Then when it was time to pay we asked for the bill & were told we had to go inside to the main counter. When we explained we wanted to calculate how much for each person in order to gather one amount and pay the total, this concept still seemed to be too difficult to grasp. As the saying goes “once bitten twice shy”...but for me “twice never”...I’ll be going back to my usual venue at Degraves Street where I know exactly what I’m getting quality and price wise. NEVER EVER AGAIN

This is an older style cafe that occupies a prime corner position on bustling Degraves St. It has friendly spruikers outside which I found kind of cute and not at all annoying. I found myself immediately liking the place. It’s small but you don’t feel cramped in the slightest. It’s a little noisy but nice noisy not annoying noisy. It’s old style for sure. Maybe 80s or early 90s but again it all sort of fits together nicely somehow. To complete the picture, they were playing endearingly daggy music on the stereo today. Retro plus. No hip hop on here. I think I heard showtunes at one point. I started with a long black which was quite good, certainly better than I’d anticipated. It was slightly bitter, but certainly rich, dark and substantive. I liked it. I hadn’t planned on eating but I liked the sound of the soup of the day, a minestrone, and quickly changed my mind. Again, against all expectations I found this was an absolutely delicious minestrone. It was a generous serve and very very tasty. It had heaps of flavour and plenty of veggies. The melted parmesan also added to my overall delight. The dish also came with a very generous serve of Turkish bread too. It was a terrific little meal. I think I’d rank it as the best minestrone I’ve since I used to get them from Maria’s in North Melbourne many years ago. This was a lovely fun little stop. I had my doubts about the current 3.9 Zomato rating but the doubts were quickly dispelled. Recommended.

Shockingly bad food, expensive & average experience! I ordered takeaway lunch today - 1x chicken quesadilla, guacamole & coffee. In short, a couple of key items on the menu you would think a decent Mexican restaurant would excel at! I waited over half an hour for my food and paid $37,- only to walk back to the office to find out they had forgotten my quesadillas! I walk back, got a ‘sorry love’ from the waiter and returned to the office. I opened the takeaway container only to find the most average looking quesadillas sprinkled with cut tomatoes and pieces of canned pineapple on them. Besides now cold, the quesadillas were very soft and flavourless. The guacamole was just as disappointing, with no real flavour or stand out qualities- just mushed avocado with some red onion in it (no seasoning, salt or any flavour). You could tell they have no care factor for sourcing the best ingredients. The only reason I gave this place a 2 rating is because the coffee is good. I won’t be returning here though!!

Recommend the fish of the day special; barramundi was well cooked, not over cooked to the point where I can’t eat it. The risotto was delicious. Steak was cooked medium instead of other restaurants where I usually get it well done. Meals were very well presented; looks like they put a lot of effort into creating our dishes. Staff were really polite, kind and welcoming. My sister broke a glass and they kindly cleaned it up for us without making a scene before offering us a new table. They were even brave enough to give us more glasses after we broke one. Really comfortable both inside and outside (they had to move us due to the glass pieces). The outdoor seating was very relaxing and candlelit which I found very enchanting. In addition, the outdoor seats were clean and I didn’t feel uncomfortable sitting in them. Floor was spotless, tables were spotless, an all around enjoyable meal.

Male manager rude and causing a scene in front of other customers. I watched him deny a customer wanting to order and pay for his own meal but was told to sit back down and his order will be taken as a group order. The customer then gets over charged for his meal and the manager was very disrespectful in the way he talked and caused a scene for no reason. It made for unpleasant experience with my family sitting watching this happen. That customer did not deserve to be treated unfairly when the manager was clearly at fault. When our food arrived it was very small portions for the price you pay and came out cold. I would not recommend to come here with the family or even by yourself.

Was just turned away from the Plenty Valley RMB cafe because we refused to sit where we couldn't have our pram with us. The whole damn place was empty, but the waitress was incredibly rude and demanded that we sit ONLY at the table she decided we should sit at. Called the manager to complain after we left, and was told by someone that he was on break. Asked for a call back, and was told that the person on the phone had just started working there and didn't know how to write down a message. Was then told that I should call "in an hour or something". Add to this the overpriced food, which is quite inexpertly prepared, and you can understand why we won't be going back.

Today 25th Sept. I had to go to the City, something I am not fond of. I am on no carbs or sugar so I was trying to find a restaurant that could meet my needs. I was just about give up when I saw RMB cafe’s sign. I walked & a charming man greeted me. I told him I wanted the Big Breakfast without the potato & sour dough. He said we can do that for you. It was best cooked breakfast I have had in Melbourne CBD. It also met my dietary needs.Pork & Fennel Sausage, amazing bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms & 2 poached eggs cooked to perfection. I give them five stars & next time I am in the CBD ( I live in the country) I will be visiting RMB CAFE! Kind Regards Diane Spick

Terrible coffee and service, the worst I’ve ever had. The manager was super rude, and forceful. This was my first time coming to Melbourne and I WOULD NOT recommend this place !! I had ordered an affogato and was up sold a shot baileys (without them telling me the price) and felt forced into it. But once the bill came a small coffee with a shot of baileys costed $18.50 (and it was terrible). I told the person that when trying to upscale something they should tell the customer the prince and not force it on the customer. The manager was super rude and aggressive with her response. Melbourne has hundreds of coffee shops so just avoid this dodgy one.

I arrived in Melbourne yesterday and met up with some friends for coffee and lunch. We ordered coffees while we decided on food and a gentleman came over to tell us they would not be serving us since our order was too low in price, as it was a holiday and there was a lineup of people (who were potentially ordering more items than we were I presume?). I would never recommend this place and will not ever return. The funny thing is, we waited in line for ten minutes and when the guy came over we thought he was apologising for the wait! But no, he came over to kick us out. Welcome to Melbourne I guess.

Expensive price for mediocre food. I got 2 slices of french toast (inc. banana and bacon) for $17.50. And my friend got Eggs Benedict for $19. Both were mediocre. Filling but due to quantity not quality. The chai was $5 and ok. Very thick and creamy. It's a little hyped I think because of its location. Service was good (ish). Super accomodating when we wanted to move inside away from the smoker on the table next to us. But when paying the waitress kept asking for 80c 4 times even though we told her over and over we only had a $50 and she acted like it was a whole issue.

  • michelle lawson

what a beautiful experience truly lovely staff who work hard on their feet all day (with a smile) I am slightly addicted to the bacon and poached eggs - somehow the Chef makes the eggs taste FRESH (sounds silly but so true) not vinegary just simple great runny poached eggs! I also noticed the pancakes and want to try them but so far haven’t been able to go past my usual. We’re all so busy rushing around with work and life nowdays. I hope this cafe does get the great positive feedback it does deserve

French Toast RMB Cafe . Two thick and fluffy slices of bread dipped in cinnamon egg wash, bacon and grilled banana, topped with maple syrup. While down for the Grand Prix we had walked past this cafe thats on the corner of Degraves and Flinders lane every day. So on the monday morning after the race we all had brunch after checking out. I went for their French toast whoch sounded pretty nice which it surely was. Degraves has many hidden gems. Also had 2 types of pancakes which were delicious

Ordered a small latte here And will never order again, the male barista did not show any effort of making the coffee. It was really hot, tasted burnt and using recycled un clean milk jug for steaming milk. Highly not recommended getting coffee here, better of across the road with other cafes. Any barista watching them make coffee will wish they never ordered.

staff were lazy and didnt pay attention to customers (were too busy playing with each other). waited 20 minutes to order, after numerous amounts of failed attempts to catch waiters attention. Glasses and cutlery were dirty (old yolk on my fork), waitress took them away and then went back to playing with other waiter while we were left without cutlery and glasses to drink from. my drink never arrived either. should of listened to my husband and ate next door. very poor service.

This restaurant is on perfect place and they know it. Prices are high, it’s full of people and taste of the meals is in the middle. We were sitting outside and we didn’t have much of space, they have tables too close to each other. Anyway, staff was kind and we didn’t wait too long for food even if it was full of people. So it’s nice to sit there once, but I think I will never go there again, there are plenty much better restaurants around Staff - 4* Food - 2* Prizes - 2*

  • linton broomhall

Very busy, very noisy alfresco area in Graves Street opposite Flinders Street station. Volumes of people walking past on each side of you all the time on Saturday and Sunday... avoid. Tables were rocky on uneven ground. Had to wait for a table to become available. I ordered a bowl of chips an extra hot flat white dined with 6 other people their meals looked basic and on the small size, coffee was excellent. I prefer to dine and drink my coffee inside in the quiet.

  • Klara Sinagl

Although this bar is placed in the fantastic location, we did not enjoy the bar. Food was too expensive for the quality they offered. I ordered a salad, where I unfortunatelly found many little bugs on the green leaves. This does not make me feel well, when I have to watch the wild life of insect right in my plate. Location was great, but the bar is maybe better just for sitting, drinking a coffee and enjoying the Melbourne athmosphere .

  • Alisha Paul

Disgusting food. Paella was below average and the mushroom risotto was unbearable, couldn't eat more than one spoon of it. Chefs have no idea about the cuisine. Overpriced for what was served up. Asked the girl for some water repeatedly because she forgot. The place stinks of cooking oil! The second boy who served us was extremely polite which was the only good thing about this cafe. Never going back. This cafe is a disgrace to Degraves st!

  • Maddison Turner

Came here for breakfast today with my mum, first time out since restrictions were lifted and was super happy with the service! Hot choc and cappuccino were great! Yes prices are a little on the exy side but for the amount of food we had piled on our plates definitely made up for it ... also probably the best scrambled eggs I’ve ever had! And staff were super friendly. Will definitely come back if ever having breakfast in the city again.

  • Tim Owens

popped in for a quick breakfast, owner quickly got us sat and we had our coffees within 4 minutes (not super busy but still). Nothing on the menu lept out at me, but the owner was helpful in putting something together with menu items and extras, ended up with smashed avo and poached eggs on sourdough, with goats cheese on the side. quality of dish was quite good, and was reasonably priced.

  • Francis Elefano

Good find on a cold night, not only outdoor tables but the inside seating was warm and cosy. No loud music as other reviewers described. We ordered the Paella and chicken risotto and were pleased with the food. The steaks in the next table were full and thick - for next time :) staff were pleasant and service was prompt. The menu was global indeed with good selection of food and drink.

  • Vaughn White

Loved eating here when I visited from America in April. Loved sitting outside, crowded, but I loved it. In America people don't even take advantage of outdoor seating. Had French toast which was great, a pesto dish another night, and an espresso . I stayed in Melbourne for a week and ate here 3 times it was so good. Thank you Diana and Merlee for the great service too, you rock!

  • Lady A

What! AUD 21.5 for 2 thin pieces of pancakes with few chunks of bananas. The pancakes were dried and hard. The taste had nothing extraordinary. Too much overpriced. The pumpkin soup charged $12. As much as price is concerned, it's ok but the taste wasn't appealing. The consistency was just thick as against 'creamy' as written on the menu. Very disappointing.

  • Vidya Teli

We were looking to have a laneway side lunch and decided to go with this place. We ordered a bowl of nachos and pesto risotto. Nachos had decent amount of guacamole and cream, although cheese could have been better. Risotto was creamy with pine nuts that added a nice crunch. But I am giving 5 stars for the waitresses who were very polite and happy to help.

  • Thara Millane

on the menu, sounded amazing, unfortunately wasted meal out. Worst gnocchi in Melbourne. Pumpkin wasn't cooked, gnocchi claimed to be pan fried and looked like it came from a packet and boiled. Zero flavour. Service, although friendly, had to remind several times to bring the bill. Never going back again! A tourist trap, avoid at all costs!

  • Bliss

Spent the weekend in Melbourne. Had lunch at RMB Cafe purly due to the overwelming busyness of the place and there being one inside table that was coincedently free for my partner and I. I loved our menu choices! French Toast w bacon banana & syrup and Pancakes w bacon eggs & syrup. Honestly a tight fit inside and outside but great food.

  • Kiki Harmer

If you want amazing coffee, delicious cakes and treats and delightful hospitality this is a must go to. We had treats and coffee from here everyday and it was by far the best frappe and cappuccino we got on our trip. Staff are super friendly and even taught me a lil Greek, when ordering my coffee. Can not wait to visit again.

  • Chris Finn

Just went for breakfast with my partner. The waitress was lovely. We had a seat that could see into the kitchen. We watched as the cook put food in his mouth, touched his hair and face and continued to touch the food on the grill without once washing his hands. Needless to say we cancelled the order and left. Unacceptable.

  • Roy Cao

A cosy corner café with smooth vibes and a delicate menu. A chill staff works the dining area also. Food is quite decent for a small cafe, down-to-earth, but just a bit on the dear side. It is not a cheap eat, but I'd say it was well worth the price. Plus, we went on Christmas Day, so that's reasonable.

  • Kay eS

Just got charged $15 for 2 plain croissants! and they weren't even any good. Already cut open and then toasted - suspect they may have just taken the ham and cheese out of ones in the fridge, given they charged us the same price. Don't go there given how many quality cafes there are in the same street.

  • Edward Hore

Coffee was good, but for the area the prices are a bit high. Took a while to be served and a while for drinks to come. The others in our party did order food, this also took a while to come, those on coffee only were wanting to leave by the time food came out, so those eating were rushed.

  • Pete Gus. T.

My favourite place when in the CBD of Melbourne. Busy cafe providing very tasty meals....love their carbonara's here delicious. Coffee is good and service effective. Very nice busy location in Degraves Street, in the heart of Melbourne. A must visit tell them Gus sent you. ☕ …

  • Deborah Harwood

Service was efficient and friendly, GREAT coffee, and the food is delish. RMB has an extensive menu and there is something for every taste. Our experience here was made even better by the extremely talented busker singing and playing guitar on the footpath. He was REALLY good☺

  • Steven King

First time going there, it was highly recommended from people in Suzanne's across the street. We were pleasantly surprised. Our new favourite place for Thai. Cheers to the staff for being extra friendly. They are quick to point out the spices used in the dishes.

  • Aly B

Delicious food and friendly service. The chef was having issues with the poached eggs, so we had a bit of a wait, but staff were super friendly and kept us informed as to what was going on. This is one of our favourite places to have brunch in the city!

  • Vishal Gurav

Cheap produce served at a high price tag. Bread toast was nothing but a bread slice from supermarket, owner needs to get good products for chef's to deliver good dishes. Very mediocre omelette and bread slice(Toast) for $20 is a rip off!

  • Yu Feng

Sitting in a cozy alley beside the Flinders street station, one of my favourite place to have lunch or dinner before taking the train, I've had the chicken parmigiana, risotto and pasta at there many times, never make me disappointed.

  • Gabriel Archer

Service was friendly. But its very small space and the fan smells of something awful. Its near the front door so don't eat near there. We got toastie sandwiches and thought was pricey as the bill was 40.00. But service was speedy.

  • Max Pyper

Took half an hour to get food. They also said they are having trouble with poached eggs and asked that I order fried eggs. They came out undercooked and I got food poisoning from them. I would not recommend anyone go here

  • Robert Hayes

Super lovely staff. Kurt helped me with a replacement when I found the coffee didn't have enough kick and made me not feel like a douche about the situation. And my replacement coffee was absolutely perfect. Made my day.

Really didn't expect such amazing food for just a small cafe, the staff were amazing. I had rib eye and my partner had carbonara and we were both amazed by how good the food was. Restaurant food quality i'd say.

  • Marco R

Had an earl grey tea and eggs Benedict with ham. Food was spot on. The tea took more than 10 minutes to come and I had to ask for it 3 times. Cafe wasn't busy at all, they had time to polish all the cutleries.

Service: Great service. Food: Delicious eggs benedict. Sadly for $23 I think it was way too expensive. Coffee: Worst coffee ever. So bitter, potentially burnt. Venue: Standard Degraves lane type of venue.

  • Saurav Jain

Came for takeaway cappuccino. The service was good, but the order did take longer than expected for a simple coffee. The actual coffee was very subpar with a burnt flavour that was pretty unappetizing.

  • Debbie Bishop

I had the Lamb salad which was cooked to perfection. My daughter had the chicken and mushroom pasts in a sundried tomato creamy pesto which was amazing as well. Great food! Great location! I’ll be back

  • Adrian Ooi

If you are charging customers $26 for a risotto for takeaway, maybe providing a carrier isn't too much to ask for? You expect the customer to hold on to the hot plastic container box while walking?

  • Katherine Khor

Great place tucked in one of melbourne's little alleyways. Group of 5 of us ordered lunch and drinks. All walked away satisfied and wanting to come back! Generous portions and good food all around!

  • Tina Kamilo

Breakfast portion was worth more than what we paid for. Food was delicious we ordered the eggs Benedict with sides. Service was great with friendly staff will definitely come back here again. 6/5

  • Vincent Lam

Food was nice... service was nice... Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon... English muffin would have been more crunchy... Was a bit soft for personal liking... Coffee was at a good temperature...

  • Sam Lai

Always a pleasure coming here. Food is tasty. The owner is super nice. Helped to take photos when my family visited from overseas and even guided us to the toilet which is a few streets away.

  • Maureen Samuel

Excellent service. Scrambled eggs with avocado, cherry tomatoes and crispy bacon on toast was one of the best, accompanied with black coffee. It was a good combo for the cold weather.

  • miss amy

I just paid $32 for a piece of salmon, 4 asparagus, and 2 pieces of raw sweet potato. When I told their server he just shrugged his shoulders..not impressed! Leaving feeling hungry!

  • Andrew B

Service were great. Real busy place during breakfast time. The coffee was just OK, food quality and quantity was not the best nor great value for money, but not bad either.

  • H G

Exceptional service and delicious food. The cafe was super busy and they were understaffed but the waitress had a smile on her face the whole time. Will definitely go back

  • Adam Irvine

Great food and service with a smile. Coffee was by far the best we have had while in Melbourne this weekend. Definitely will be dining here again at this little gem.

  • Kya Kaise

Friendly staff, delicious food. Excellent coffee. But hard to get a table... And had to wait forever for the food... the place was very busy.

  • Raymund Wong

Friendly staff, friendly owner and big breakfast is the best around the area. Coffee didn’t have latte art but taste good. Recommended.

  • Raheel Hasan

Overpriced and average food! Coffee is good though (hence 2 stars). Look at the pic, this is all you get for almost $30.!!
