Lilydale is on the up-and-up food wise. After the town being in a lull for many years, things are starting to change and thankfully, Round Bird Can’t Fly is part of the rise in culinary delights in this town. A friend invited me and between us we drove 50kms to get there (it was halfway point) and so glad she recommended this place. We’d booked a table on a cold Sunday lunch and with the rain teaming down, it was lovely to walk into a full café with a friendly, warm atmosphere. The décor is recycled industrial with the warm of homemade produce on the shelves and local artwork on the walls. The menu isn’t huge, so the choices are easy to make. After a hot chocolate (with handmade marshmallow square) and latte each, we ordered two meals that were superb. The meals arrived and served on stunning pottery which seems to be a theme at Round Bird. The gnocchi with heirloom tomatoes, stracciatella and prosciutto and basil ($25) plus the bento bowl with miso rice, teriyaki tofu, avocado, broccoli, edamame, pickled carrot, vegan kimchi and my friend ordered mushrooms as well ($25) The gnocchi was handmade and the texture was light without being too cheesy, which often happens with cafes. The prosciutto was thinly sliced and not overloaded on the plate, giving the taste a combination of salty, creamy and delicate puffy gnocchi. My friend’s bento bowl was refreshing with an abundance of fresh vegetables and ideal for the vegetarian or vegan. Which brings me to another tick in their favour – they cater for dietary requirements of their guests. So just let the staff know if there is something on the menu that you’d like without the ‘this’ or the ‘that’. Takeaway coffee appears to be a roaring trade and with the exceptional cakes display, there is something for those that have a sweet tooth. Local food wares available for sale at the front of the cafe plus, the pottery that the meals are served on are also for sale at the front of the cafe. If you were coming for dinner, there is a small wine list with reasonable prices. Nicely, there is a private dining area that has the decor that’ll Appeal to everyone. There is outdoor seating as well and once the warmer weather comes around, it would be the perfect place to sit with family or friends and pass the time with drinks / meal. Parking is pretty good out the front but there are time limits, so beware. Access into the café is very good. Seating can be accommodated for a wheelchair or if someone needs more space / accessability.. Disabled toilet which also includes a change table plus one other toilet. Staff were friendly, helpful but also discreet, not interrupting our long overdue catch-up, filled with joyous memories and tears. Summary: 10 out of 10. A must visit in all seasons and explore the rotating menu.

We went here for Mother's Day today, we had a booking for outside, and it took a little bit to get the order taken. The menu on the website is their old menu but they also had their old menu in the restaurant, but you couldn't order off of it, but it was given to a few tables by mistake and some tables were annoyed. Just remove the menus and take them out the back? Anyways, there are a few vegan items on the menu, the item I wanted was the 'vegan option' so I asked what the vegan option was and the waiter said 'I actually don't know, I'm quite new here'. When I worked in hospitality we were not allowed to tell tables we were new as that is a poor excuse for not knowing something, just say I will find out and come back. He went to ask and came back and said they just remove the poached eggs. Which the vegan community hates because why should we not get it replaced with something if we are paying the same price, the eggs are $7 but we are paying the same, uh no thank you, so I asked if I could have them replaced with the scrambled tofu and he said that should be fine. He was very nice just needed more training. The food tasted delicious and definitely made up for the service, although the scrambled tofu was small, like a 1/4 cup worth, so that was very disappointing. for $7 I'd expect a minimum of a cup worth as tofu is cheap. The restaurant was poorly organised today, staff seem to need more training, there was a very long wait to pay and there were 4 staff members just hanging out at the coffee machine. I like the area the cafe is in and the interior is modern and there are a lot of nice little things to buy for home. It is a 25-minute drive from my home so if the service was better, prices aren't bad, a little on the higher end, would adjust prices for vegan options or have a replacement for non vegan food. I'd definitely try again because the taste of food is worth it.

Decided to go out for brunch and looked at this place because of the cute name, and the menu looked great. Got there for a busy Sunday morning but they were able to seat us. Staff were friendly and effective despite how busy it was. Coffee and food both came out quickly. The coffee was the best I've had in a cafe at a long time, and the dishes were excellently prepared and tasted great! Price was very good for the quality of the food. Can't wait to come back! Update: came back to the new menu and they've redesigned the interior and it's better! Food and coffee still great. Service excellent.

Don't bother eating here. Terrible experience earlier this week with family. We have eaten here many times before but this time was absolutely beyond the pale. Our party sat down and I went inside to enquire about menus. The young lady who then brought out the menus and glasses basically tossed them on the table and gave us the absolute rudest treatement I have ever had at a restaraunt. The hostess / waitress was aggressive, rude and rolled her eyes. I can't emphasise enough when I mean tossed/threw the glasses and menus on the table. We were so taken aback. My nearly 80 year old mother was shocked and I had to apologise to her for what had happened. Not sure what was going on that day, but taking it out on your guests is not cool and unwelcome. We won't be eating here again.

Today was our 2nd visit after dining here a few weeks ago and being impressed with the scrambled eggs. I had ordered poached eggs with bacon and hollandaise which was very enjoyable and I tasted my friends scrambled eggs which were yum. This time we both ordered the scrambled eggs and were not disappointed. The breakfast menu is such that you order eggs and then add your extras. For us the pricing worked out ok as we kept it fairly basic but if you wanted a full range of items it would be quite costly as opposed to some cafes that offer an affordable full breakfast. The service was efficient, friendly and quick. This cafe also has some locally made items for sale such as honey, bread, soaps and drinks. A busy little cafe with great tasting food, we will come here again.

If you're looking for a cafe in the Lilydale area, you cannot and will not find a better quality cafe than Round Bird. I have been coming to the Round Bird cafe for years now and to put it simply the coffee is excellent and well balanced, whilst the food is of an incredible quality for what I would call underpriced compared to most other cafes in Lilydale and the surrounding suburbs.

What a gem. Unassumingly tuck away waiting to be discovered. Most recently, our party of four each had specify dietary requirements. Delighted to have found they catered for a range of contemporary tastes and made an effort to ensure that you have a splendid meal irrespective of your dietary requirements. Portions are fantastic and well presented. Miso salmon devine, had a ‘traditional’ burger, OMG! When a restaurant can get the basics right, you know you are in for a great time. Had our meal, staff glanced to make sure everything was going ok, without interrupting the conversation. Some coffees afterwards as well and stayed on for a yak. Weren’t rushed to leave, all in all a fabulous lunch experience! Careful the parking in front as it’s only for 1hr.

This place is absolutely amazing. There is such an array of choices. They have a section for vegans. I can't eat gluten, soy or dairy, it's nice to see a cafe accommodate for people who have different allergies. The place is small, and very busy. The counter is tucked towards the back of the cafe, when it gets busy it gets crowded. We were placed next to the counter, lots of bodies around, difficult to hear each other talk. The food was amazing, I had the smashed avocado, it came with beetroot relish. The dish was delicious. The earthy flavours from the beetroot and the freshness of the avocado is a match made in heaven. I had gluten free bread, it's the best gluten free bread I have ever had. Shout out to the team at @roundbirdlillydale

  • Soapy_Soap

Bitterly disappointed in this once enjoyable venue. I feel it has just gone in the wrong direction - everything lacked flavour, chips soggy, menu way too eccentric (blood pudding, too many fish or vegan options) - not enough standard meat choices for an everyday person like there once was. The only real "choice" was breakfast which I really didn't feel like in the afternoon. Condiments paired didn't match the meal e.g. eggplant as opposed to tomato relish on lamb burger. Crammed into a tiny area, overly loud & busy and service severely lacking. Lilydale is spoilt for choice of cafes and this one I must say is the worst of them all now.

Amazing!!! This was an unexpected find when we were in the area and we will be going back very soon. Couldn’t fault the breakfast or the coffee and our female waitress (young, tall, sweet girl with lovely lashes) was brilliant. We had Eggs on delicious seeded sourdough with home made hashbrowns, perfectly seasoned avocado and everything was perfect. We watched all the other choices come out from the kitchen and everything looked delicious. Lots of happy satisfied looking customers on a Saturday morning. Congratulations to the team, see you again soon.

Whilst lovely, coming here from out of town it definitely feels like a spot for locals. The food and coffee were fine but pretty pricey so take that with a grain of salt. We've stopped by before on a prior trip out to the yarra valley as our brunch before going to the wineries. You definitely would be disappointed but it's also not going to blow you away. That being said the service and vibe is pretty great, it was a tad noisy when we came but they were absolutely slammed with people. 4/5

it is a lovely cosy cafe with friendly staffs ☺ they offer a range of food from simplicity to sophistication to vegans. ordered their cauliflower & bacan croquette and banh xeo with my friends which we adored. love the mugs and cups used here tor there coffees, ordered my usual-oat cap, it was a four beans blend if i remembered correctly. ☕ if there isnt enough parking at the service road, theres loads next to it with a bridge connected, pretty convenient. highly recommended and you could also drive another 5 mins to lilydale park for an enjoyable after-meal scroll. will come again

Went there for lunch and was expecting great food and service. Sadly, staff was grumpy and unwelcoming, felt like taking our order was a massive inconvenience for them. Waited for almost an hour for the food to arrive, including items from their kids menu. I am wondering how assembling basic dishes such as rice bowl with tofu, can take that long. No one came to reassure the food is coming soon, no apologies given for keeping hungry child waiting and going crazy. Food wasn’t great, just ok. Won’t be returning.

The staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is very nice. But, when the coffee arrived the mug was cracked and had a big chip out. The waiter apologized and replaced it, then the food arrived, gnocchi was drenched in oil and the beef cheek was way too salty, with sauce and cheese that was also too salty. The manager did not charge us for the meat dish, without a problem. I might return for coffee or other drinks thanks to the beautiful atmosphere.

After visiting dozens of cafes here in Melbourne, I really get used to a very high service. In this cafe the place is good with a great indoor seating also the drinks is great. The issue here is I think you need to pay them to gain a friendly service. The guy in the front once I entered he kept talking to me without even looking. All staff inside no smiles, I even asked the guy behind the coffee machine, about a cack I saw , he replied the name of it and told me the name of it is written “hard to read” like if I asked stupid question. The service here was shocking.

  • Gr8Food Club

This cafe has always been one of my favourites in Melbourne easily up with the the best melbourne cafes and restaurants, Exceptional service and really creative menus which are updated every few weeks. Highly recommended. They also have a great range of house made food in the chiller such as gnocchi, muffins and their delicious smoked salmon plus much more including plenty of local Yarra valley produce and their wine room carries a good range of Local wines as well, nice to see a cafe so dedicated to the local area.

Had a gorgeous family brunch in the function room. Menu is very varied (we had a coeliac, lactose intolerant and vegan) had options for all. Couple of picky eaters were able to avail of the English muffin and build your own breakfast options to have it just how they liked, the additional breakfast options where fantastic with some different cultural influences. Only reason for 4 stars was one members order was missed and they had to wait for a while for their food to come while the rest of us had finished. Mistakes happen, no big, would definitely go again.

Just ordered via Uber which for one isn’t cheap, coffee cost over $10. I was excited when I saw Storehouse Roastery as they have a decent reputation. However, the coffee tasted extremely acidic and pretty much undrinkable. They either aren’t cleaning their machine or portafilter properly, or they’re over dosing making the pour run too slow. The coffee tasted over extracted and horrid. Either clean your machine and equipment better, or alter your method. The only redeeming quality was the carrot cake.

Excellent coffee! Consistently good with both black and milk coffees, take-away and dine-in coffee. Lovely pastries, baked goods and breakfast is always spot-on. They have a range of lovely cheeses and take-home to cook items. My family loves the lasagnes, but the vegan lasagnes are the most requested. You have to check when they're making them though, because they sell-out quickly! Oh and the service is lovely.

We get takeaway coffee from here, sometimes a meal. It's all very tasty and the coffee is great. Staff are friendly. Wait times tend to be longer tho, busy or quiet, I'm always waiting ages for a takeaway compared to other places. Having said that, they sell great produce in store and there's interesting shops near by, so I pass the time by checking them out. I'd go here unless I was rushing for the train!

Dreadful service- order was not put through -successive waiters did not come and ask why we were still waiting over half an hour without anything!! We had to ask what was happening after everyone around us had eaten and we were still sitting there. Then non chalantly after we asked a waiter to check he went and had a drink and wandered around before telling us the order wasn’t put in and he supposed the small chai latte I had ordered and drunk would be free. Shocking service and we will not be returning.

Not sure if this place has new owners, but this place has gone downhill since I was last there. The Avocado breakfast was sad and disappointing. The Avocado was clearly off, it was grey and tasted awful. The staff were stressed and disorganised even though it wasn't busy. The manager/owner was unfriendly and quite terse. Needless to say she helped us make the decision that we won't be going back. Such a shame as this used to be a great place to eat.

The food was fantastic, and there would have been a better rating for the service (but asked for sugar, and the young girl forgot and then ignored us, so got our own) and the atmosphere would have been fantastic had the room not had the echo of the screaming child whos screams pierced the ear drums. Overall, I would recommend it to all.

Wow! What a place!! The vegan menu is exceptional and there's great options for vegan kids too! Excellent coffee. I had the eggplant reuben for lunch and it was incredible. Amazing flavours, generous portion and I'll definitely find it difficult to choose something else next time we visit. Great outdoor seating and plenty of space between the tables for our big dog to lay on his mat comfortably. Staff were friendly. Everything was awesome. You won't be disappointed !!

Thanks @Round Bird! Love your work! Food was delicious, can't fault anything! Price is okay, more expensive than others but can't fault that with the good food. ☕️ Coffee is good. Nice atmosphere, outside and inside seating, very nice. Dog friendly with no trouble out the front. Staff are very nice and attentive. Very accommodating for our group of 10 on the spot. Great parking out the front, plenty of spots available.

Big, bright, airy space. Friendly efficient staff. Coffee is good. Quite cold in autumn/winter. Creamed rice delicious, nice texture. Pears served with it provide a good contrast of sweetness. Topped almonds were a little over-toasted, but still paired well with the nuttiness of the rice.

Super friendly and attentive staff. Both inside and outside seating are nice spots. A semi-limited menu but a better options for vegan diners. The chicken dish was nice. Pudding was okay (says my gf). Both portion sizes were satisfactory for prices. Presentation of food is always amazing here. Final summation- It is worth coming here, but I wouldn't make it my regular.

We dined in for brunch and coffee and found we’re pleasantly surprised how well everything was done here. We ate everything from a ham and cheese croissant to the Korean bowl and it all was plated perfectly. The coffee was the best you can hope for and we really enjoyed the assortment of goods near the front counter. So happy to find this place on our travels.

If you need to take a break before or after wine tasting in Yarra Valley, Lilydale is a good midway point (coming from Melbourne) and Round Bird Can’t Fly is a great place for breakfast, lunch, or coffee. They also have a good selection of Vegan dishes. It has comfortable indoor and outdoor seatings. Food and service are great, love their coffee too.

  • anastasia gramatakos

We were so impressed by the menu, offering an abundance of options for our vegan and non-vegan group. Serving sizes were very generous, so much so that we couldn't fit in any of the delicious cakes on display (vegan biscoff donut!!). One of the tastiest vegan brunches I have had in a long while, the hotcakes and mushroom burger were real winners!

I enjoyed my lunch here with colleagues. I had their Pressed Lamb and an iced latte. Their prices are pretty steep with mostly every meal costing $18 and above, however the quality of food was good. Always great! Interesting breakfast/lunch menu and delicious house-made sweet treats. Today the blueberry & fig muffin was full of fruit, moist and delicious. Best coffee. Quick service friendly staff. Well done Round Bird!

Delicious breakfast. I had the house made English muffin *chefs kiss*. Thank you to our waitress for recommending the yummy local tea and to the chefs for being so accommodating to our dietary requirements.

Food was great, service was excellent and it took me a bit of getting use to when it came to their home made almond milk. But it was amazing. Thanks guys. Will definitely be back for another meal.

Very average. Slow service. The sour dough was pretty thick and was hard to cut. I recommend a steak knife to go with the sourdough if it’s thick!

I have been here several times and the food has always been tasty. Today, I had the smashed avo on sourdough with a few extras. I enjoyed my brunch.

I had baby Barramundi for lunch. The fish cooked perfectly, however, the polenta chips were too salty for me.
