We recently visited the Sassafras Cafe in Mount Dandenong for breakfast on a Saturday morning during our trip to the Dandenong Ranges. It was a delightful experience that left me impressed with the simple yet inviting atmosphere, delicious food, and the warm hospitality of the sweet couple who run the cafe. It's a simple cafe where you can walk in and enjoy a homely brunch without any hassle. The menu offers a variety of tasty options, and I was pleased with the quality of the food. The cafe has an open kitchen, which I found quite appealing. Additionally, the availability of outdoor seating was a bonus, especially during the summer months when you can enjoy the pleasant weather while savouring your meal. The food at Sassafras Cafe had a homely touch, and I loved it. I ordered the French toast with bacon and maple syrup, and it was absolutely delicious. My partner had the eggs Benny, and the poached eggs were perfectly cooked. Apart from the scrumptious food, what impressed me was the cozy atmosphere of the cafe. It felt like a home away from home, with a welcoming ambiance that made me feel comfortable and relaxed. I also appreciated that the prices were reasonable. The coffee served was of good quality and complemented the meal nicely. Overall, my experience at the Sassafras Cafe was memorable and highly recommend this cafe to anyone looking for a charming and inviting place to enjoy a delicious meal in Mount Dandenong.

I went there for brunch with my wife and sister in law, yesterday Saturday 18th . We found the owner and staff very accomodating with our dietary needs and the food was of an excellent standard and service was A grade. We were made to feel welcome the moment we stepped inside. I would highly recommend this Cafe set within e beautiful landscape.

Had a lovely lunch here on a wet winter day. Atmosphere was warm and staff were friendly and brought laughter to our day. Had the Chicken Focaccia which was crisp and crunchy on the outside and wholesome on the inside. Spinach Feta quiche was fresh, home made and delicious. Devonshire tea scones were soft and fluffy complemented nicely with an English breakfast tea. Would have liked more jam and cream to fill up the big scones. Only downside was that we came out smelling slightly from the kitchen cooking. Would like to come back to try the breakfast menu and cakes in the display cabinet.

Had a light lunch there. Had the chicken & mushroom pie with salad and relish. Yummy! Wife had the Focaccia - another great dish . Young team serving us. Kudos to them for great service. Cheap lunch for us. They had to turn afew customers away as it was packed. All the best and hopefully it can continue to operate as a cafe. Continue to support the local mountains businesses.

Went for lunch. Asked for a plain butter sandwich for my 4yr old as she was unable to eat anything from the "kids menu" (3 party pies OR hotdog in bread). We were told that they couldn't do butter on bread because they were "too busy". Said I would pay for a full meal i.e. foccassia without anything but butter (a quicker option given they were "so busy" even though they had spare tables) and we were told no. We had to leave. I can't comment on food but atmosphere and staff, terrible, not what I expected from the local community. Very disappointed.

After a hard slog riding up, having a feed here and a coffee was much needed. Solid food for some hungry guys. One of the few places open along Main Street and that doesn’t have a massive wait time. Staff are super friendly and accomodating. Messy burger in the end but tasty and delectable. Fries perhaps were needing some salt but they provided that no trouble when asked. Great service, but be prepared to wait a little from order to being served the dishes.

My husband and I were on a post wedding getaway and we visited the cafe two days in a row, once for lunch and the other for breakfast. Both times the service was warm and friendly, and we had a great seat by the window which you could look out at the trees while you ate. The teas and coffee were delicious but the highlight was definitely the club sandwich and pumpkin soup (lunch) and then the epic french toast for brekkie! The owner was lovely too and all round made our experience a great one. We will definitely be back!

I’ve tried so many scones in town n out of town and i reckon this is the best scones. Not only the bread texture, also the jam and cream are perfectly made. The only reason I give 2 stars on atmosphere is because they have this Open kitchen inside the cafe, so you will get all the oily smell on your hair n clothes. They have outdoor seating but it was too cold during winter. Anyway, their staffs are superb friendly! Lavv it

Super cute cafe, friendly service, had a lovely chat with the owner. We had breakfast and because we were so comfortable and time got away from us, we stayed and had Devonshire tea. Absolutely loved the unique variety of teas, it was hard to decide so I will return to try another. Definitely recommend

Simple cafe with homely brunch food - tasty nonetheless and I love it when a cafe gets the poached eggs right. Nothing superb to shout about but it was nice and quiet when I visited on a Monday morning and the staff were friendly and welcoming so thumbs up for that.

The scones were good, but there are alot of places nearby where they are great. Same with the coffee. It was really expensive in comparison to other places, after I left I realised I think I was overcharged. 1 serve(Two scones) with 2 coffees cost me 35 dollars.. The customer service was great however, and the other items on the menu sounded nice, I just wouldn't go back.

Such a lovely little nook to perch up and have some yummy food. The owners are so lovely and really care about the quality of food they’re giving to you. Prices aren’t over saturated like many places these days and the coffee is good too. Lovely spot :)

The host recommended the Sassy Burger, and it was excellent. Fine service, and easy to get a table - not too busy on the weekday visit, of course. The toilet has a step going up to it which may be difficult for some.

Food was average. Patty in burger was pre cooked, frozen, and then reheated. Chicken club sandwich was nice. No table service. Staff seemed tired (Easter weekend so was busy). Small venue so hard to get a table and no bookings allowed.

We went for the scones. The staff were lovely, and recommended just one serve for two people (I went to order two serves/four scones) as they were large portions- they were right. The scones were delicious, fluffy and freshly baked in store. Rod was happy to chat and threw in some great insights about the area. I’d definitely go back :)

  • Merdroid Woods

A cosy place with friendly people and nice food. We enjoyed the Barramundi pie, and the club sandwich. Service was welcoming and friendly. Our order seemed to take a while to arrive, although the cafe was not particularly busy. But we did find enough to keep us occupied while we waited. Nice place to come if you're in the area.

  • Vahid Shahani

We enjoyed the brunch. However, customer service was a bit poor. The table was dirty as we arrived and no one came to clean it. Staff came every 2 minutes and asked us if we are ready to order. While she was asking I was cleaning the table but she didn’t care about it. Thanks

Instead of lining up for Miss Maple’s tearoom. Sassafras cafe is another one filled with customers. Feels like eating in someone’s home, though a little crowded. Very efficient service. Food are not bad in general the pasta is yummy. One down side is the hot chocolate is way too sweet for anyone. Their cheesecake is amazing !

  • Rachel Berry

Lovely, quiet and homely. Definitely the best quiche I've ever had and at a good price! So light & fluffy. A little disappointed with the scones - dry & a what seemed like too long in the microwave. Maybe next time they'll be better. Cream & jam was yummy. Great staff, very friendly and welcoming.

  • Peta Mitchell

I am a regular return customer. The staff are accommodating and so friendly , nothing is to much. Best scones. Can be hard to get a table on weekends as very popular. I would re ommend to anyone to have a cuppa and meal. The staff remember myself and children which is so nice.

  • Rakhsh Appoo

What a cute little cafe, with good food! The owner himself came out to grab our orders and kept the children entertained. Love the idea of supporting small businesses especially after COVID. Friendly locals around walking their dogs. Great friendly cafe with a lovely vibe.

  • Taryn-Louise Carter

Delicious food, one of the nicest burgers I've ever had the pleasure to devour, beautiful coffee and the owner is an absolutely delightful human being who was warm, welcoming and charismatic to boot. Easy 5 stars .

Great Cafe, has a really great old school feel, with photos of the surrounding area. Can recommend the Sassy burger and the Chicken burger. Also great to grab a window seat and enjoy the town with some Devonshire tea and Scones.

  • Rob Williams

Fluffy and warm scones via the Devonshire tea set were memorable. The different teas and coffee we tried were nice. No wait compared to more popular places across the street, so this one is worth it if you'd rather not wait.

  • Aruni Malaweera

Sassafras village is up in the Dandenong Mountain Reserve. Got very hot and tired after roaming the Dandenong Range Botanical Park. A ice tea and sugary cake to help in getting a rest.

Scones were delicious, alittle doughy but the jam and cream made up for it. Can get busy on the weekends. Would come back again.
