"I have a friend who is homeless @ St Davids Park, a space he calls home"
Walled park. Beautiful gardens, chairs and grass. Lovely place to take a picnic. The garden covers the grounds of the first European burial ground in Tasmania. Some of most important grave monuments have been left there along with most of the 900 bodies. Cement dry and now park named after the first Lt Governor, David Collins. Collins himself was buried there in March 1810. About a year afterwards the first church in Tasmania was built on the spot, with its altar directly above his grave. The opening of the Cornelian Bay cemetery in 1872 allowed St Davids and all the other burial grounds within the city to be closed. Memorials remaining include David Collins, author and colonial secretary James Ebenezer Bicheno; Lachlan M Sorell, the infant son of Lt Governor Sorell; Sir John Eardley-Wilmot, Lieut. Governor in 1840s. A major feature of the park is the memorial wall which is made up of many of the original headstones from the parks previous life as the Hobart colony s first cemetery. It contains the names and details of many First Fleeters and many of the early settlers of Hobart Town. The lion sculptures at the entrance were restored as a bicentennial gift to the people of Hobart from the Australian and New Zealand Banking Group Limited which erected them here jointly with the corporation of the city of Hobart in 1988. The lions were carved in a tent on the foot path in 1884 by Richard Patterson to serve over the entrance to the Bank of Van Diemen s Land. The lions were then displayed at Port Arthur under the care of the Tasmanian Government until 1988.
Wall of headstones from 1800's, why, was I walking on top of the origional grave yard? Due respect the memorial wall is unique. The grave stone/cripts that remain I take as being as they should be. My apologies if I have walked over anyone below. A visit was well rewarded for this history buff plus an informative pro-bono by a local gentleman (previous guide from isle of the dead) on some of the inset headstones.
Dog-friendliness
Doggie pick-up bags available.
Picnic area
Manicured lawn for a blanket to have a picnic with family, young and old as park benches are also on grass. Ashtrays provided at entrance for those if required.
BEST park in Hobart, Tasmania & the entire DownUnder. The perfect place for picnic, for chilling out & for meditation, yoga exercise & practising taichi. Love the sculptures & structures, so wonderfully made & of such rich historical value especially the beautiful rotunda. It’s also adjacent to the famous Salamanca Market & a stone’s throw away from King’s Pier Marina. I highly recommend anyone & everyone to visit whether you come alone or with loved ones, friends, colleagues, customers & visitors.
St Davids Park is a must visit for everyine .one of Australia most Historical sites. We in Tasmania should have a organised visiting date as its full of history and suffering in the events to make this once Penel Colony Into todays most must visit capital .we need to have a Fair Dinkum Aussies day as this is really where we started making us a great nation .Stan wilkinson APOLITICAL also inexpensive to visit and stay. Come on Australians bring your family and friends Hobart etc not to be missed
I have a friend who is homeless @ St Davids Park, a space he calls home. I am under know illusion but frankly saying a park I have become somewhat familiar with over a six month timeframe and there after. Its delightful array of vegetation, spatial surrounds, seating and care provided by council workers, becomes a meeting place taking on any visitor and unconditionally providing a very yet permanent meeting point for transitional visitors alike.
Lovely Park on the edge of the CBD. While fairly small it contains memorials that have been erected to some of Hobart's and Tasmanias early administrators. One one side of the park early grave headstones have been preserved on walls and make for interesting reading. Some date from the earliest years of settlement and whether they were on the first fleet.
Memorial Park commemorates colonial history first fleeters, early Hobart citizens & government officials in tombs, and a pathway made with gravestones. Tall trees, lush green grass spattered with white clover & busy bees. Birds sing in the trees. Tranquility here. Clean Public toilets
Restrooms
Near sandy bay road access eastern side of park
What a gorgeous time of the year to wander through St David's Park. Plants are flowering & the perfume as you walk through is amazing. If you are a daphne lover, get down there toot-sweet, the fragrance will have you dancing. I thought Autumn was my favourite time here, as I love walking through all the fallen leaves, but move over Autumn........
What a beautiful park! Do yourself a favor and go there if you like parks of course. This is a centraly located park near the warlfs and pubs etc and is a great place to either take the kids or wonder through by yourself if you don't have any. It is also close to shops pubs and is in the heart of Hobart. It is well worth the effort of going to.
Good park next to Salamanca Place. Formerly Hobart's graveyard. Interesting monuments to former governors and leading citizens. Headstones of others relocated to walls around the Supreme Court. Most bodies still in ground, only about 100 relocated to new cemetery. Across the road was St Mary's hospital, now a cocktail bar.
A beautiful place to take a walk, have a picnic or take a break from the busy Salamanca market on a Saturday. It can get quite busy during the weekend, and sometime there is live music. Dogs are allowed in the park on lead, but not in the Salamanca market. The park itself is relatively small and has toilet facilities.
Nice serene park situated in the midst of the city. There is a monument erected to the memory of David Collins, Lieutenant-governor of the city. Spent much time trying to get the perfect shot. Families took children out to play there. At the other end of the park is the well know Salamanca Market (Sat only).
A lovely park space with rolling green lawns, beautiful big trees, interesting architectural accents, and nice arcing footpaths. It's a wonderful place for a picnic or a leisurely rest on a sunny day. It's so cheerful and relaxing that one almost forgets the entire space was once a cemetery.
I love St David's Park more than any other park in Hobart; large, in the middle of town and beautiful. Set in almost a natural amphitheatre with a striking heritage rotunda as its focal-point this space is always lush and green and calming and has plenty of shady areas to relax.
Beautiful. Peaceful. Lovely giant pine trees and other beautiful greenery. Great spot for a picnic in the park. Rest rooms are a little unkempt sometimes ...and the massive building in the middle of the park is a bit of a waste of space. Get rid of it and plant more trees
Lovely park. Great for picnics, walks and catching up with friends and loved ones. Wouldn't reccomend going at night, particularly alone, but great during the day time or at special events like carols by candlelight etc. Crumby bathrooms, but at least there are bathrooms.
This is a beautiful sanctuary from the city. Glorious trees and lovely green grass are most inviting. There are sandstone headstone s of very early settlers of Hobart mounted in a number of walls at the lower end of the park. Two of these are my ancestors.
It seems unlikely to me that St David ever owned this park, can't say for sure though. I once saw a stormtrooper here (star wars type, not WW1) and on another occasion ate a great beef sandwich. Overall, I associate this place with positive experiences.
Very pretty and relaxing park just by the heart of Hobart CBD, with plenty of shaded areas and plenty of monuments. Worth spending the time to read them. Check out the First Fleet memorial and the Memorial Walls Couldn't find a water fountain though
Lovely shady park at top end of Salamanca place. Lawned areas and pathways. Easy access for mobility impaired people. Plenty of seating. A nice place to relax with family and friends away from the hustle and bustle and crowds of the weekend markets
Nice large park with clean modern toilets and a rotunda. Good spot to picnic but now an alcohol free area. Used to be an early Hobart cemetary with many old interesting headstones now placed in a wall. Burual place of Governor David Collins.
Took a walk around St David's Park this afternoon. Nice backstory. Back in early settlement times it was the main cemetery in Hobart town. In the park there are memorial walls which are made up of many of the original headstones from the
A great spot to wander the gardens and take in the history of old Hobart. The gardens were one of the first grave yards in Hobart and include a walkway lined with old grave stones that paint a picture of Hobart's collonial past.
A great historical place, with beautiful grounds. Great place for lunch. Ask the girl friend to marry you, dare I say it, making love with you clothes on of course. It has a spirit of it's own the park. See for yourself.
Came across this place whilst playing Pokemon go. Place is a good meeting spot and busy during lunch hours. With offices and business centers close by, people often relax here on break. Even saw a fitness class once.
Next to Salamanca Market. It's nice to walk through and enjoy the greenery. You can take food there and relax while you're eating. Basically, it offers footpaths amongst the trees with a limited number of benches..
A lovely park must visit if new in Hobart, it's on the way from Hotel to Salamanca Markets. I'm glad that I found it on the first day in Hobart. It's tranquil and beautifully designed. Pleasant to stroll around.
Small lovely park steeped in history and heritage lion head statues (from now demolished bank building). Good to relax in for lunch or walk through on the way to Battery Point.
Absolute must see in Hobart! Beautiful park near Salamanca Markets that used to be a cemetery. The old grave stones have been reset into a wall of remembrance. Lovely gardens.
Right next to the Salamanca market. Green , white and lavender are what I saw in summer...maybe other seasons you may see more hues. Well manicured lawns and well kept garden.
Beautiful park, check out the lion heads at the main entrance. Pull up some historical photos and history of the past. Very interesting you'll be capitivated, I certainly was.
Perfect for a quiet stroll among sprinf flowers or fall leaves, read a book on a oak bench, picnic ona blanket on the grass or a historic walk through old headstones. % …
Lovely place to sit and eat lunch away from the hustle and bustle of the city, while still being in the city! Green grass, and lots of large trees to shade you from the sun.
St David's Park is great to seat down and relax in the middle of the Hobart. Lovely grass and gardens, also go down the bottom and read the headstones that are in the wall.
Quite park between Hobart and salamanca. Would be good place to clear the head. Has a lot of history but there could be a bit more information posted about it in the park.
Its a great place for getting fresh air with the sun bath. Fresh and well maintained trees with the hug veriety of flowers. Additionally, you can see history of Tasmania.
Not a huge park but quite scenic, serene and is drowned in history. If you get a chance, read the descriptions on tombstones and various installations around the park.
A beautiful made and maintained park in Hobart - take the time to admire or just relax on one of the many seats. PS l finally got a park named after me - ha ha.
In this park you will find etched upon the stones the early history of Hobart. It is a beautiful place to take a walk, eat your lunch or just sit.
Well kept park with lots of old trees and green lawns. Wonderful food/wine/cider markets on Friday evenings. Great spot in central part of Hobart.
Gorgeous and peaceful, St David's park is the premiere of parks small-town Hobart has to offer. A friendly kookaburra lives in one of the trees.
Very nice park and well maintained. However it is home to several homeless and their friends who have been known to be aggressive and violent.
Have the luxury of viewing this place from a nearby apartment. Slice of heaven. Read the stones along the path, and reflect on earlier times.
Historically significant park that sometimes has homeless people living there. It was a grave yard for a long time. Nice Ingress location
Autumn in the Park is beautiful! Great place for very small children - quiet, peaceful, autumn leaves and dry lawn to toddle and lie on.
A wonderful Block of green featuring large trees and cut grass. A lot of trees planted over the years to commemorate people and events.
Quaint and beautiful park on the perimeter of the Salamanca Markets. A great place to have a lie on the grass and enjoy the fresh air.
Get for a break with kids to unwind for the first half lap of Salamanca market . Nice gardens and toilets top East side of park …
Calm, serene park next to the Tasmanian Supreme Court buildings. Well maintained and very nice place to unwind and have a picnic.

Old park with mature plantings and a nice rotunda. Surrounding roads are a bit busy but nevertheless a nice place to have lunch
Fantastic historic graveyard. Incredible trees and shrubs. Loved the rotunda, wish bands still played there. Peace in the city
Beautiful place to have lunch, play with the kids and have fun in this gorgeous, quiet and chill spot no matter what weather.
Gorgeous flora. Beautiful setting. Wish Hobart had more entertainment in the parks , so these great parks were utilized more
A beautiful park with some awesome old trees and some headstones with history. Well worth a slow stroll through this park.
Very nice little park in the middle of town. It has two amazing Pine trees, perfect for a quite chillout under its limbs.
It's a park close to the CBD and local tourist precinct it's great to chill out in and rest. A quiet retreat in the city
A beautifully landscaped park with huge old shady trees. Very nice soft grass to sit on. Public toilet on the grounds.
I love this park. The best place for a lunch away from work in Hobart. Don't go here though, I like the peace & quiet.
Green grass with lovely flora historical monuments. Lovely for a picnic. Right next to Salamanca markets on Saturdays.
Lots of what appears to be historical grave sites which were interesting to read. Lots of places to sit and relax.
Green beautiful park in the middle of the city, that’s provides with some fresh air :) Clean, well taken care of!
The Copper beech is wonderful at the moment with a clear traditional shape. My favourite small gardens in Hobart.
A lovely, well maintained park. The history of it is fascinating - initially being the original Hobart cemetery.
A good place to stay connected with nature in the middle of the city. Good place to relax and have a picnic.
Nice place to calm in the middle of the busy city. Clean toilets, a lot of benches and green gras to sit on.
A beautiful park with some huge trees but not much colour. Still an enjoyable and relaxing place to visit
It's a nice place, quiet, and chill, the bathrooms reeked of weed, so 4 stars, but that's the only issue
Pretty location with lots of history. Very nice drive to this location with a Cafe/ restaurant nearby
The park is very walkable and in a great location. I highly recommend it if you're in the Hobart CBD.
