Fairness and flavours that unite! We recently dropped by The General Store in Emerald for Sunday brunch and were super impressed. Their commitment to fairness shines through in everything they do. The cleverly designed menu is all about keeping things fresh and local, using seasonal ingredients sourced from the best spots in Victoria. The brunch options hit the bullseye, delivering tasty meals with quality ingredients that didn’t disappoint. The crew at The General Store aren't just friendly, they're on top of their game. Knowledgeable, helpful, and with a laid-back vibe that sets the perfect mood. The service? Quick and efficient with no time wasted. You'll be in and out with a smile. Now for the coffee. They've partnered up with the coffee gurus at Coffee Supreme in Melbourne, and the result? Pure java bliss. Seriously, their brew is top-notch and will give you that caffeine kick you need. But here’s what truly sets The General Store apart: They walk the talk when it comes to fairness. They’ve created a workplace where everyone is treated right, paid fairly, and respected. That positive energy permeates the place and adds an extra sprinkle of goodness to your visit. If you’re hankering for a brunch experience that combines deliciousness with a dedication to fairness, The General Store in Emerald is where you need to be. They’ve got it all—friendly staff, locally sourced goodness, and a vibe that instantly makes you feel right at home. You won’t be disappointed.

Our initial impression was great. I like the vibe and the place looks clean. As we have 6 people at the same time, the young lady is kind enough to allocate us to wait in front of the counter and advised us to wait for 15 minutes. We told the young lady that we happy outside the entrance as we don't want to block the way, but she said it's ok to wait here, so we wait. However, the other lady wasn't so friendly. She told us that "we people" is blocking her way and demanded us to go out and wait. We explained the situation, and said we happy to wait outside. But she stared at us, responded that "we people" stand in the way and demanded us to go outside in very rude manner. There is several people observed and listened the whole situation, and I'm sure things can be well managed. We do not want to escalate the matter and walk away. Some couple walked away too. It just rude.

Went for breakfast/coffee and didnot disappoint. My avocado toast was fresh, coffee was smooth and customer service was friendly. They offer refreshing monthly menu and I liked how they were using the ethically and sustainably sourced local seasonal ingredients found in the valley and the Dandenong ranges. The menu offers wholesome wide range along with vegan option and easily provides for dietary requirement also. Highly recommend their almond coffee and Come and avo go breakfast. We sat outside but interior looked pretty and spacious too. Loved the green plants vibes. This spot is been locals fav since 2011! Glad we had the chance to check it out while we were in the Yarra Valley. They also sell baked goods, home made sauces and more. Def worth to stop by when you are in the area and support local business!

Food was great! Limited menu but reasonable flexibility for dietary requirements. Outside area under cover at the back is pretty draughty even though the heaters make it ok to sit there during winter. Inside area is very small. No ability to book a table. Wait list only. And they get busy so be prepared to wait. On some tables the chairs are at different heights which is annoying. Small number of tables out of the front on the street. Worth a visit for the food. Don't go when it's busy.

This place is amazing, easily one of the best cafes in Victoria! Everything is made fresh and seasonal, you can taste the difference. The staff are so so nice and really welcoming and accommodating. They have options for gluten free and COELIAC for almost everything, as well as other dietary requirements such as vegan etc. The chefs made me a Coeliac version of the pork burger, plus sweet potato pakora and avocado. It was so delicious. My friends got one soba salad to share so the kitchen kindly split it into two bowls. They also have a bunch of handmade goods which are all gluten free. I highly recommend this place to anyone passing through Emerald or stopping by from the Puffing Billy Lakeside stop.

Great little cafe in Emerald. We've always had great food here, the iced mocha is sensational (best around - house made chocolate syrup, and premium ice-cream). The staff are super friendly and clearly love working here, and it shows in the end product!

So many positive reviews made me want to visit. Unfortunately our food experience was not a good one. $21 toastie with ‘thickly sliced sourdough’ was a gross exaggeration. Not remotely thick. Scant filling although it was tasty, still not worth the cost. The eggs with bacon was nice and for $17.50 on the upper end. Coffee was good, staff polite. Overall, an expensive lesson learned. Didn’t help that there was a 15% surcharge for the public holiday plus another credit card surcharge. So, in short, overpriced and underwhelming. Much better options available around the hills.

ENGAGE-ing experience This excellent establishment aided in my engagement adventure for my lovely fiancee. I had previously visited the week prior to determine the appropriateness of this venue. I was pleasantly impressed! Arriving on the proposal date: I was warmly greeted and ushered to my reserved table. Throughout the meal we were well looked after by the caring staff. Our meal was prepared professionally with care given to the quality and presentation. It is a real shame we did not take any photos! The food was appetising and my fiancee raved about the broccoli of all things! Overall, we would highly recommend and are likely to return :)

  • Ruwanmal Palapathwala

Cute and cosy family run Cafe with the warm personality and service to match. Ordered a magic and the Sheepish (warm) Salad (lamb based) - $38 with added poached egg and pumpkin but will defs return again for this. Fresh and quality ingredients are used! Limited seating inside (about 12 spots in the front end, more in the back) so get in when not too busy. They also have outside seating but it was too cold/windy today for that. Apparently they don't take bookings but accommodate as best as they can.

My favourite cafe in ALL of Melbourne. Used to live locally but now will travel happily 90 minutes for the friendliest team, best coffee and freshest brunch around. Fantastic sweets and heaps of options for Vegans! Not that I would know how those dishes taste, the scrambled eggs and bacon are too good to deny. If you love good produce, coffee that is extracted to perfection, and a community feel, you'll love this place. Go on a weekday or early on weekends to avoid a wait, but trust me it's worth the wait to eat here. I've been going here since it opened almost weekly and never had a bad experience.

  • Darren Williams

What an incredible find ! As an Englishman on holiday in Australia we loved this place. Loved reading about the history and the ethos of the place. Local produce, community focused and amazing products to buy. We had breakfasts - “Fire in the hole” and “Arabesque” - both were beautifully cooked and delicious. Staff were helpful and very knowledgeable about the products and menu items. Really can’t praise this high enough. A lovely cafe with fantastic food.

I have driven past this place many times but never stopped for something to eat. Its a small boutique Cafe using local produce and house made menu items. I had the arabesque with avocado and bacon. At first the meal looked small. As I was eating I realised its bigger than it looks. The eggs were poached perfectly, and the house made beetroot relish is perfectly made. The staff are friendly and very good at what they do. If your driving through Emerald I would highly recommend stopping and having something to eat.

  • Must be Hungry

The General Food Store out in Emerald is one of the best hidden gems in Victoria . We had the Arabesque, You're My Boy Blue and the Juan and Only. All meals were on point, however being somewhat of a burger specialist this burger just fell short for me, but still not bad considering burgers are not their specialty. Staff were nice and overall great atmosphere out here in part of the world . We loved the food, simple but at the same time sophisticated and surprisingly tasty - Hungry

Love this place! I frequent this cafe all the time because you are gauranteed a big smile with friendly service, a great coffee and amazing food. Ive never once been let down by anything I have ordered! There is limited seating and in peak lunching hours you can struggle to find a seat but if you go slightly earlier you can get lucky. Or... wait... its worth it. There is a cute furniture shop and a health shop in the strip of shops and a small clothing shop around the corner - all walking distance.

  • Arzu Refikoglu

Called an hour before and made a reservation. The restaurant was full and we got a seat in the outdoor section out back. Make sure you bring a jacket although there are heaters. I ordered the k-pop chick burger it tasted amazing. The only recommendation I have is cutting up the kimchi as it was a little messy biting into it. Also I put some of the beetroot relish from my friends Arabeque plate and the burger was next level!! Highly recommend this place also for its great coffee.

  • Mat Krusche

This place never fails to give you good food. Menu changes regularly and staff are always lovely. Update. 13.06.23 This place is still awesome. I can't speak speak highly enough of the staff who are always bubbly and friendly. Food still amazing. To maintain the high standard that this place has had for such a long time is astonishing.

Just meh.. we paid $30 dollars for a breakfast bowl with avo, cornbread, eggs, hot sauce and feta.. just lacked flavour and finesse. Got the oat hot chocolate which was chocolate coloured but tasted just of oat. Avocado and corn salsa has an overpowering citrus (lemon) flavour and everything else was just so so. Croissant wasn’t to bad but $12 for ham a cheese for it to be just ok doesn’t really make sense. Was hoping for so much bud in the end was disappointed.

I love the General Food Store! Best cafe in Emerald. Great coffee, lovely staff and sensational food! Make sure you get down there for breskfast. They have an extensive and delicious vegan menu and great food for the kids. If you are like me and want eggs for brekky, personally I recommend trying the famous Arabesque (I also add bacon!). Seating can be hard to find, so make sure you book in advance. Top job crew!

This is the second time I’ve been here. The second time was much better. Yummy food, the cornbread is to die for. My only concern with this place is the pricing. It’s a little expensive for what you get. My plate had halloumi, cornbread and an egg and was around $22-25. It’s just a little on the pricey side. Lovely staff :)

Look, my review isn't going to tell you something the 400+ other reviews haven't already told you, so I'll be brief: Everything you read is true. The food is great and the staff is really friendly and welcoming. My only addition is that it's also an incredibly cozy place. Sitting in the window on a cold day, after a nice walk in the surrounding area, it's like you're in your own living room.

  • Leigh Stebbing

This place is a workday staple for me, their food is really tasty. The staff are very friendly and remember your name when your a regular. It is a chill space to have a wet chai on a rainy day. I highly recommend the Arabesque, or Fire in the hole (when it is on the menu). Their beetroot relish is so good and worth the price.

Great coffee and heaps of gluten free options on the menu. Had a great brunch and we will definitely be back again. Hubby ordered the K.G.C (Korean grilled chicken) and I ordered the Sweet Swine Of Mine and both dishes were yum Only downside was they don’t have coffee syrups available other than Chai but that’s not a big deal at all. Staff were extremely friendly.

Popped in for a take away coffee and the welcome from the staff was so warm and friendly. Light bright atmosphere and food looked fresh and yum! Coffee was excellent and I was in and out quickly. Would love to go back when I have more time.

If you can find a time to eat at this great place without it being crowded as - you are very fortunate. Food quality excellent but last time a little on the dry side. But I was there late in the day. Ambience excellent but very tight so privacy is non-existent for young lovers. But be there for the food.

If you are thinking about going here, do it! Everything about this place is fantastic. Best coffee, best food, best staff. The menu is seasonal so we come back time and time again and it has always been exceptional. This cafe is my happy place, big thanks to The General and all the lovely staff!

Staff always lovely. There is a back area to sit at when the cafe is busy. Wish it was in a better location as not much goes on up this end of Emerald. Atmosphere is nice. A couple of outdoor tables with doggy water bowls. Vegan options, wish there was more. The Lamington is yum!!

  • Matthew Conway

The best cafes around. The good is spectacular and the service is fantastic. There isn't a lot of room but that adds to the charm of the place. The dishes change regularly given they only have food that is currently in season, this makes for some new exciting dishes all the time.

Dougie's first foid venture is always great. Tiny store but absolutely wholesome locally sourced ingredients. Staff are always natural and cheery. Not had a bad meal since they opened.

If you want a cafe to make you feel both welcome and full to the brim, I can't recommend anywhere else in the area. It's a delightful place with food in perfect abundance. Full marks!

Best food and coffee in the hills, bar none. Coffee Supreme handled by experienced baristas compliments a fantastic seasonal menu. Packs out quickly on the weekends so get in early!

One of my favourite cafes in Melbourne. The coffee is amazing. Food is so good & they serve delicious food for both vegans and meat eaters & most dietary requirements.

The most expensive take away coffee I've had in Victoria... It's a real pitty because the staff is so lovely, but I just got a shock when I saw the charge on my card!
