Edit: Upped my review to 3 stars because owner responded to my review which impressed me. Super disappointed in the bike maintenance department. I initially brought my bike in because I needed a frame swap because one of the bolts stripped (the pivot bolt in my mountain bike) out the threads in the frame. How did the pivot bolt get messed up? It backed out during one of my rides and Trek said it was a manufacturing issue. Nevertheless it's scary to notice a key bolt that holds your frame together was barely holding your frame together. I gave The Peddler the new frame and hardware for the swap. My instructions to them were please swap the frame, use the new hardware I am giving you, and do any other maintenance that needs to be done that you can find. They told me it would take a month because they were slammed (totally understandable) and would cost north of $300. When I first got the bike back my rear brake was very lose indicating that it likely needed to be bled since it is hydraulic. I brought it back to them and said hey can you please bleed the brake, because I asked everything be done maintenance wise and this seemed like a huge oversight. The guy was very nice, apologized and then took the bike back to bleed the break with no additional charge. So now 5 weeks later I have my bike back with the new frame and working brakes. I start riding it the next month and notice that this bike CREAKS. This was disappointing because it is a fairly new bike and a completely new frame. I located the creeks coming from the bolts and upon further inspection, the bolts ARE THE SAME EXACT ONES THAT RUINED MY LAST FRAME. I immediately call them and ask them what happened to the hardware that I brought in. It takes them a day to locate it but they finally get back to me and say hey we have your hardware, it was never put on the bike because somebody accidentally took it home. At this point I'm thinking ok this is understandable. The thing I can't get is over that I told them the pivot bolt was what ruined my last frame and that's why I needed a new frame and then THEY GO AND PUT THE SAME BOLT BACK INTO THE NEW FRAME. Although I'm super glad it didn't back out again in the time I've been riding it, I can't help but feel incredibly disappointed in the service I was provided Anyways to their credit they did finally get me my new bolts back to me but I decided for my own sanity and safety that I should now be the only one working on my own bike. The guys at the shop are really nice and personable and I would probably still buy things from the shop but never again will I bring anything in again for maintenance and hope that they up their game for current and future customers.
these guys should not be trusted at all, period. when i bought my raleigh 2.5 one of the first things i did after arriving home with my new bike was to check the serial number on the bike and compare it to the serial number the Peddler Bike Shop employee had entered and used on my receipt. it was different. so, i took the receipt back the next day to have corrected. the Peddler Bike Shop employee gave me a little sales receipt with the correct serial number, but no information linking me to that receipt or my new bike. i pointed this out and he printed out a corrected full receipt which showed the complete details of my purchase. he appeared to be irritated in having to do this. that was 2012. TODAY, June 4, 2021 i returned to The Peddler Bike Shop on Duval for the third time in the past couple months to discuss issues with a defective tire they sold me. the tire was sold to me as "puncture resistent". my purchase was in February of 2020. I actually bought two tires at the same time. since making this purchase i have had multiple punctures (flat tires) on the rear tire. none on the front tire. today was my third visit to address this. i arrived early and had set my wheel against door of the shop. i was standing just a few feet away and the guy who opened the door, Drew, shoved open the door "over" my tire. this guy was then very abusive but finally agreed to check out the tire. when i returned a couple hours later he told me that i had been right, that the tire i bought last year was indeed defective. he replaced the tire with a new tube and was at this stage of our interaction very polite. on the way home from the bike shop, on the bus carrying the tire, i noticed one of the spokes was bent. then i noted a second one was bent. when i put pressure on one of them, IT HAD BEEN BROKEN! yet the wheel wasn't bent out of shape, which is what happens when you break a spoke. this means that whoever replaced the tube and tire on my rim also trued (made straight again) the rim after the spoke had broken. THEY BROKE MY SPOKE, but when i called to report this the Peddler Bike Shop employee i talked on the phone said it had to be like that before i dropped it off. he took no responsibility for the damage. said i should bring it back in so they could have a look at it. i'm fairly certain it was broken by the employee who opened up the shop and forced the door over my wheel. why did he do this when i was standing right there waiting for them to open and could have moved the wheel. The guys are crooked. there's just no other way to "look at it." shop their at your own risk, but be advised, THEY DO NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN MISTAKES.
I went to the Peddler at Hyde park today with my friend to check out bikes as we have been wanting to get one for a while. This is the first time I’ve ever step foot in a bike shop. We waited in line for about 20-30 minutes because were only seeing people one at a time. When we got to the front of the line my friend ask the worker at the front door if we can come in and he said YES we looked at two specific bikes marked at $600. We were amazed at the bikes as I never seen a bike that size that light weight. A second before we could turn around to ask for help. A short guy with a long beard that work there told us very rudely that WE DONT NEED TO BE IN HERE PLAYING AROUND WITH THE BIKES. THAT THERE HERE TO SERVE CUSTOMERS AND WE ARE WAISTING HIS TIME. Also that we weren’t suppose to grab the bikes off the rack. That we should of asked him for help. My friend and me were both stunned! Never have I felt so disrespected and Unwelcome. I understand the part about not grabbing the bikes off rack but could have just asked us politely not to handle the bikes without him. Neither one of us knew the process of getting a bike at that store. And we were granted permission by the worker at the door to look around. Tried to explain to him that but kept repeated himself over and over. Not to mention the worker who let us in just stood there and didn’t let the bearded fellow he said we could come in. I don’t know if he was discriminating against us or was just a misunderstanding. But we were there to buy bikes. Three bikes in total. One for each of us and one for my girlfriend. We just said our piece and walk out. That bearded guy has bad customer service and is a bad businessman.
If you're looking for a huge chain with all the parts and an upcharge of 300%, don't go here. If you're looking for real Austin people who know what they're doing, this is the place to go. I had an issue with my bike and there were two options for replacement, one costing $100 more. Asked the guy what he thought I should do, and he said, "Well, $100 is a week's food, so I'd do the less expensive option." Either they're not paid by commission or they actually care. Took my Kestrel in for a tune-up prior to an 83-mile ride, then took it out for a spin and there was a creak in the bike. Creaks are super hard to diagnose. Called them two days before the ride, and they said they'd put off their other work and take care of it. Made an appointment for the next day, and sure enough, they did as they said. Took off and swapped out every relevant part in an effort to find the creak, all in the same day. I've been back a few times since for a few other things, and the guys recognize me, didn't charge me outrageous labor charges because I had just been in before, and gave me some great advice. Will definitely go back again for a tuneup next year.
Thanks Al and staff for Your professioanl help and attitude. I got there right about closing time and I said I need to look at bikes. Al said come on in. Of course we all had mask on. So there were two different bikes I wanted see. I pick one and Al installed the lights, bottle rack and I was ready to go, but I decided I want the other bike. Al looked up and said no problem, let me get the light and bottle moved over. He got it done and then before I left he said now I need adjusted the suspension to match me and my weight. He got it done and everyone was very helpful and keep thanking me for my business. If you need a bike or bike repair this is the place I would HIGHLY recommend. Thanks again Al and the entire staff The Peddler Bicycle Shop!!!
Love this place, really appreciate the level of customer service that the owner brings. There are a couple bike snobs that work there. I have learned to just avoid getting my bike serviced when I see either of the two at the counter. It has gone as far as one mechanic feverishly denying service because he deemed it as unnecessary, which really sucked because I really wanted this certain modification to happen and had the money to cover all the "problems" that he was throwing at me and it just ended with me just saying "Thanks" and politely leaving while covering my frustration with a smile. So if you can imagine that even after that I still like going to this place and I still give it 5 stars (mainly because I think very highly of the owner).
I have been going to the Peddler for about 7 years now. They have kept my old Schwinn Mirada running well despite the abuse that it has taken on the city streets as my primary mode of transportation. A year ago I purchased a new bike for my daughter and the staff really helped us find a bike that fit her well and she has been very happy with the bike. This year it was my turn for a new ride and after shopping around I found that the Peddler is very competitive with other bike shops in the are. Couple this with their excellent service department and it was easy to make the decision who to purchase this bike from. I have had the new bike for a few weeks and I am totally satisfied.
They've fixed every problem I've ever had and the price is always bizarrely low. Got an old bike missing one stupid little part? They have it in the back and its probably 50 cents. My brake broke once and it looked like a pricey full replacement. I come back and it turns out they opened up the lever, found the tiny piece that was cracked, and had a replacement. Total cost? Like 10 bucks. This place kicks ass. Nice selection of new bikes as well and they carry great brands like Kona.
My favorite shop in Austin. I built my own bike and occasionally bring it into them for questions and service that I don't want to do myself - so it's not like they've made a bunch of money off of me - and even so, their labor rates are super reasonable, turnaround time is good, and are even willing to show you how to do it yourself or explain what's going on, if you're curious. The same crew is always there which is cool. Routinely awesome experiences coming here!
Superb, fast customer service from expert, friendly staff despite the necessary Covid precautions (limited in-store occupancy, less inventory than usual to create more space). One of my kids' bikes needed the tire tube changed and a brake replaced. I was expecting it to take a day or two but instead the Peddler crew fixed it on the spot in less than 30 minutes. I'll definitely be back. Terrific resource if you live in the Hyde Park / Hancock area.
A friend gave us a couple of older but decent bikes and they needed some help. We just happened to pass The Peddler on the way home and stopped in. They were as fast and helpful as possible, all while maintaining a Covid safe environment and we left the bikes with them. Picked them up today and I didn't honestly recognize them. So happy with the bikes, the price, the service...will most definitely be returning for any of my future needs. Thanks!!
We stopped by this location because we needed to get some new handle bars, new tubing for the tires, and a new seat saddle. Nick from this location helped us out-not only was he knowledgeable, he was also very friendly, and made the experience very pleasant! The experience was definitely a five star experience with great pricing, and I would recommend this bike shop to anyone that is looking for fast service, and knowledgeable staff.
The managers were great. The service and component they recommended were much cheaper than I expected. The mechanic missed several details like capping the ends of cables that he cut, cleaning the rims, and replacing the rubber donuts he removed from the cables. He also didn't clean any of the dirty components like the chain, derailleurs, and chainrings. Then, he smirked when the manager got on him about it.
I pass several other bike shops when I'm taking one of my bikes in for service or repair at the Peddler. I know these shops are good, and they'd probably do a fine job, but it would be hard to beat the professionalism, friendliness, customer service, and all around good vibes that I recieve here. These guys love bikes and it shows. They are more than happy to share their experience and knowledge.
Today I had yet another excellent customer service experience at The Peddler on Duval. I needed some minor work on my older mountain bike. They listened attentively to my description of the issues, quickly diagnosed the problems, and fixed them the same day for a very reasonable price. Friendly folks, good communication, no upselling - that’s what keeps me coming back every time. 100% recommend.
I love this place. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable, and the service is spot-on. If you know jack squat about what kind of bike you need, they will not make you feel like the dummy you are and that's awfully nice of them. Prices of bikes, parts & accessories are all reasonable, which is surprising considering the rent they must be paying in Hyde Park. Best shop in town!
I dropped by to get some general maintenance done on my bike, having owned it a while and slacked on service. They were super quick and didn't tack on tons of things even when it was apparent I didn't know much about bikes. They cleared all the charges with me beforehand and I didn't even have time to finish my cup of coffee before the bike was returned. Definitely coming back!
Great local bike shop. Took a wheel in to be trued, found out it had a cracked rim. Although I didn't purchase a new wheel/rim from The Peddler, the employee researched and priced out the options. Very helpful in making the decision to rebuild the wheel or scrap it and get a new one. Nice staff, even nicer equipment and bikes for sale. I will definitely be back!
I asked for an empty bike box to ship my bike with and these guys were super friendly and helpful. Despite people waiting in line behind me, they went ahead and unpacked a brand-new bike so I can have the box and all the protective materials. I offered to pay for the box but they declined. If I need anything bike-related in the future, you know where I'll go!
Great place!! Had a little accident with our bikes and bike rack and thankfully, this place was right down the street. The two guys working there were so helpful getting us a new bike rack and checking our bike. They also put the rack on the car for us and told us a neat trick to keep the wheels from turning while on the car. Highly recommend this place !
Kind, helpful staff and a great store all around! I stopped by the other day to see if I could get help to get my tires refilled. The person who was working there patiently and helpfully showed me exactly how to use the pump, and gave me great tips for how to do it. Absolutely worth supporting this local store for its friendly staff and great service.
I went to the peddler at Duval. Our helper, victor, was Amazing!!! Very friendly, professional, efficient, fast service, affordable. Way better than that bicycle sport shop on 183 (expensive and cheaters)! I highly recommend the Peddler shop for any bike work you need... from a flat to purchasing a bike. There’s even a coffee shop next door.
This place is the best! The guys are all knowledgable and very nice. They treat the customers with respect and don't jack up the prices on work being done. I have a very difficult triathlon bike (all internal cabling) and they have done great work on it and charge the minimal amount for their work. I don't go anywhere else if I can help it.
These guys are really good! Took in my bike to put the hydra hubs on and the price was just unbeatable! Asked around other shops and Bicycle Sport Shop charged me crazy! Almost three times high for the same service. They are straight up on what you need and just dont push you to buy stuff! Definitely my go to bike shop from now on.
Went to another bike shop first not gonna say the name of it rhymes with retire... and they said we are super busy we can take a look at it next week when they knew we were in town for competition so stopped by the peddler which mainly has mountain bike and racing bikes and these guys took the time to fix my son's BMX
These guys go the extra mile here in Austin. So grateful for Finley's help tonight, I'll be on the job tomorrow because of him. While I was there, Drew was helping a customer who was amazed at the customer service that he was being given. I'm impressed with this place, and I'll be back for sure. Thank you, Gents.
I've been going to The Peddler years now. I've bought several bikes from them' BMX, Road, and Cyclocross. AJ and the staff there have always been super helpful. They have gone out of thier way to make sure I got a great deal on the right bike for me. I've always left happy and I recommend them to everyone I know.
Got a flat tire on the way to coach a PE class at the Griffin School. I was able to basically just throw my bike at them and run to coach the class. and they took care of me. When I got back there about an hour later, bike was ready and I was able to commute back home. Amazing experience and great service!
I took my bike in to get the brakes fixed and/or brake pads replaced. What would normally take some bike shops at least an hour took minutes. It helped that they had more than one mechanic in the back, but this is the first time I've had repairs done that fast. My brakes are working great now, too!
I don't really know much about bikes, but I know mine needed some work done on it. The guys at The Peddler did an awesome job with the bikes I dropped off, and it was even ready a couple days earlier than expected! They're friendly, extremely transparent about their prices, and easy to work with.
Think I might need to get: (heart) "The Peddler Bicycle Shop" tattooed across my chest. They had me back on the road in 20 minutes. Knowing I have this shop around the corner, I know I'll always be able to get around. Staff is attentive, skilled and knowledgable. Loyal to this place for life!
Great bike shop. I brought my road bike in for some repairs and a few adjustments and was really happy with the work they did. They were fast, fairly priced, and the guy I worked with seemed genuinely excited about the way my bike turned out. It’s nice to see someone enjoying their job.
These guys are doing alright by me. Could have been a slightly better experience since I asked about my tire condition when I first took my bike in, which later resulted in a punctured inner tube and a dry rotted tire, but the guys worked with me on my return visit and made it pleasant.
These are some of the nicest dudes in the business! I've trusted them with my vintage bike on several occasions and the service is always fast, friendly and very professional. I highly recommend them based solely on their fantastic customer service and knowledge of all things cycling.
Great shop! They have good mechanics and they're well-stocked with parts and stuff. They're good about ordering things if they don't have it. Also, I've been to several shops in town during the pandemic, and The Peddler has the best combination of safety and service of all of them.
Great guys. Came in with my bike that had been sitting for over a year expecting to need a lot of work done. After taking a look at it they told me it needed just a couple things to get it road-worthy! 10 minutes later I'm riding home! I'll definitely be back for future bike needs.
I’m very impressed with this place. I had a flat tire and they fixed it in 10 minutes! They are fast and kind and so reasonably priced. It has a real neighborhood feel to it - people who are in it for the love of bicycles and the community. A very positive experience - wow! …
I bought an admittedly cheap bike online and had these great folks assemble it for me. Not once did they bike shame me, as have other bike shops, and they were super helpful and supportive, hooking me up with everything I need to hit the road. Thanks Peddler!
This is a good neighborhood bike shop, I've popped in a few times and they've always been more than helpful. Came by a minute before closing (like an ass) for an emergency bike seat swap and they we're totally patient and friendly. Prices are just about MSRP.
I took my daughter's hand cycle there because she had outgrown it and they were able to let everything out to the point that it should last her until adulthood. And they only charged me $10!! He said it was an easy fix. I highly recommend them!
I'm a novice biker, would love to get more knowledgeable and be able to repair and maintain my own bike, but until then I would not like to walk into a specialty shop and automatically feel like I don't belong. I visited a couple of months
The Peddler has been extremely good to us. They helped us find the right bikes for us and have taken care of our newbie repairs in a timely fashion. It's awesome that we get free tune-ups for a year with the purchase of a new bike.
We have had 2 older bikes serviced here and we have purchased 2 new bikes from them. The staff are friendly, informed, helpful, and professional. Prices for both sales and service are very reasonable, especially given the location.
Bought 2 new MTBs, after 1 month returned for some tweaks on the breaks. Charges us for unreasonable items which weren't discussed upfront. If you want to buy a new bike and expect some service better to look somewhere else.
Really awesome place. I came in needing a new back tube and a derailer adjustment. The guy did it in about 20 minutes and then I was outta there, and the price was very reasonable. I'm definitely coming here again!
Stopped in the tune bike on a cross country trip. Excellent knowledgeable fellas took excellent carebof me quickly and i spent so much less than i thought! Awesome coffee shop a few doors down was a bonus!
I get here for repairs all the time. The staff is fantastic and the prices are great. When it comes to service, I think they're unmatched. I love The Peddler and as long as I am in Austin, I will go here.
Had a great experience getting a bike today, thanks a million to Travis and the crew! He really hooked it up and made sure I had everything I needed. So excited to get back on 2 wheels again.
Went for help getting a pedal off my bike so I could replace it. The guys helped me out with the right tool for the job and didn’t even charge me. A great bike store. Thanks for the help!!
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Will have your bike in such a great condition that your bike will feel like it was new again! They also have a good selection of bikes and accessories.
I've been to a lot of the bike shops in town and this one has by far the best customer service. Knowledgable friendly staff who don't look down their noses at you for being a beginner.
Terrible service! Girlfriend was totally ignored by staff that were dismissive and sold the wrong part that she needed, telling her that it would work for her bike. Deserves no stars!
Just genuinely a great place. Drew helped me purchase a new bike for myself and i couldn’t be happier with not only the bike but the customer service i received. Everyone here rules.
Thus place is awesome and very informative about their product. They gave me a great deal on a bike and. Even offered to help load it. I definitely recommend this place. Thanks guys
These guys are salt of the earth folk. They are good at their job as well as both honest and efficient. When I move out of this neighborhood, I will still bring my business here.
Brought my cross bike in to get tuned and received really great service. Super knowledgeable people who work there. Don't be afraid to ask questions. They know how to help!
I just bought two new tires and tubs and let them install them and I am very pleased with the work that they did. It is a great bike shop with cool people who work there!
So helpful. They will sit down and walk you through everything you need and then offer to do it all for you. They do not overcharge, honest work and very knowledgeable.
Ehh twice I’ve gotten my road bike back with problems still. Affordable but may not have the best work done, but are very professional and responsive to your concerns.
needed a new tube. when they took the old one out, they gave it to a dog who was running around in the back. dog immediately chews it up. service was fast and great
Student with a limited budget and busted wheel. They managed to find me a used nice wheel within my budget and fixed it up within the hour. Would highly recommend!
We were riding the Adventure Cycling Hill Country route on our tandem when the back tire went bad. They were great and fixed the issue quickly. Highly recommended
Went to three bike shops on a busy day to get my tires fixed and trued. Peddler had the best price, timing, and customer service of all three. Will be going back.
my neighborhood bike shop. i have only good experiences here. all the folks who work here are friendly and happy to explain things to me. solid customer service!
Great local bike shop! I’ve made multiple trips for all sorts of bike issues and they’ve been extremely helpful getting my bike riding better than ever before!
Great locally owned shop!! I've bought parts and had service done here and am pleased with their attention to detail and friendliness. Thanks ya'll!!!!
Great customer service and quick turnaround. The staff was very helpful and expedited the repair of my rims and got me back on the road. Thanks y'all!
Took my son's bike in to get it tuned up. They replaced brake cables, adjusted everything and replaced an innertube other stuff for 50$. Will go back
Al was very helpful and went out of his way to find a bike for us. With the pandemic there is a dearth of bikes in the area! Check out this place.
Great shop with great people! This is my go to shop as soon as I need anything! The boss AJ is one of the nicest and helpful guy I know as well!
Friendly staff that doesn't try to get you to buy unnecessary things. Fixed my gear shift for free. Highly recommend giving them your business.
The employees are all friendly and helpful. Best value for the quality that I saw anywhere else. Highly recommend, and it's a local business.
This shop brings the best for their people. The way they communicate is definitely great. I would suggest you visit them if you love bikes.
Five dollar minimum on card transactions. Just needed a three dollar patch kit. Here’s a tip, just price the patch kits at 5 bucks.
Best bike shop in Austin. Had the pleasure of having Drew help me. Was quick, helpful, and did great work. I will return for sure!
the utmost service and expertise I refuse to shop anywhere else their attitude and their knowledge compliment who we are cyclist
Really nice place, everyone's really friendly and knowledgable. Got my bike chain replaced in 5 minutes flat and was on my way.
They took the time to educate me on how to make minor break adjustments myself. Really great customer service all around!
Been using these folks for at least two years, great mechanics, always friendly and knowledgeable on all sorts of bikes.
A+++. I was in a bind trying to find a box large enough to ship a bike I sold and they went above and beyond to help me.
Always friendly, helpful, and informative when I’ve stopped in for bike accessories or tune-ups. Peddler is the best!
Speedy and excellent service. Went in for a flat on a mountain bike and was out the door in 15 minutes. Thanks guys!
A good bike shop will change your life. I love the Peddler and have been going there since just after they opened.
These dudes are awesome!!! Drew and his homies were super helpful and very friendly. Thank you so much fellas!!!
Awesome, had what I was looking for, best customer service, kind, friendly .I will come back.Thank you so much!!!
People can be pretty rude and they have ruined some spacers I brought in to get cut down. Pretty unprofessional
Helped me with what I needed. Didn't know they charged for labor cost on installations and tire mounts however.
Went twice for some help on my a new bike, they said they would take a week and half, went to REI took 5 mins
The absolute best bike shop in Austin it is unimaginable the help that they gave me whenever I did need help
Really bad service, they are very lazy, they don't do things right, it's just not worth your time or money.
Smaller selection but with an awesome staff and that local bike shops vibe that will make you a regular.
Knowledgeable and enthusiastic service team. Parts and labor lead times are just a matter of fact now.
Your typical Austin organic, gluten free, neighborhood, cool bicycle shop with helpful hippie staff.
Packed & Shipped a BMW bike for us extremely well. Very fair price & quick service. Outstanding!
Good enough service, friendly and decently affordable pricing. This shop came recommended to me.
I have been going to this bike shop for years. definitely one of the best bike shops in Austin.
Experieced personnel who enjoy their craft. Honest reasonable repair prices without the upsale.
Had to pay twice for the same job, because they didn't do it wil the first time. Enough said.
Fast, efficient and affordable. Kind, funny and knowledgeable. Favorite bike shop in Austin.
I came 30min before they close for them to fix a flat tire. You got to admire that hustle
