I never write reviews but just had to this time after the most infuriating experience. We just went to the Sober Mule for lunch. My grandma ordered the fish and chips and when they came out I commented that the fish had a strong smell. My grandmother ate half of the 3 pieces and left the rest because it didn't taste right to her. She's not one to complain so we just paid and left. One hour later she had an upset tummy and was vomiting. I made a courtesy call to the cafe and was put through to the manager Lyn who was defended from the very beginning. I simple wanted to give some feedback and heads up that there may have been something wrong with the fish they were serving. Well I ended up getting all the excuses under the sun. I was told that it can't have been the food because she tasted it when we left (what?!) because she had noted that most was left uneaten and wanted to check that it wasn't off. She proceeded to suggest that perhaps it was because she was elderly or perhaps she had been around children with gastro. She then told me she was a food scientist and took these matter seriously and that one cannot get food poisoning from frozen food (say what?!) and that food poisoning from fish takes 6 hours to manifest - some unusual (and very inaccurate) comments coming from a "food scientist". I was adamant that it was the food and no I didn't not want a refund just a customer giving feedback so no one else gets sick - her response was for my grandmother to provide a stool sample if we wanted them to test it!! Ummm no thanks! Terrible, terrible customer service. The coffee is also nothing to write home about. Rant over!

I dropped my daughter off before school for breakfast on a cold winters morning by herself. My daughter is an extremely polite and well mannered yr12 VCE student. She was refused a table inside and told to sit outside and eat a while other patrons were allowed entry to sit inside. I called later that afternoon and spoke to a male manager who was extremely rude, consistently talked over me and insinuated that my daughter (like all teenagers apparently) would be “hanging in groups and swearing and throwing things around in the restaurant”! I was appalled at his stereotypical and disrespectful views that all young people are undesirable hooligans. He hung up the phone on me after his rant too! My 17 year old daughter has more respect, manners and courtesy in her little finger than that grown man has, that’s for sure! We certainly will never be returning to a restaurant run by someone with less consideration, regard and respect than the undesirable adolescents he is trying to keep out!

We've been here several times and it was always great. Unfortunately not so great today. We had the Quiche Lorraine and my son the fish and chips as he loves anything seafood. The quiche was mainly bacon cubes, very flat and on the cold side but edible. My son's fish however was odd. Very floury and a strange taste. Hence he didn't eat it (only 1 of 4 pieces). When I went to pay, I mentioned the fish issue and was asked if we weren't informed that it was flathead instead of whiting. We weren't but I've had flatty before and it's always been nice. When asked, if something can be done about the price, the answer was "no". Then spoke to manager who swiftly told me that most had been eaten which was clearly untrue. 3 pieces of 4 were untouched. He gave us $4 "discount". Won't be going back there in a hurry.

Very very surprised with the anger which was bestowed apon us when we purchased coffee and takeaway sandwiches, we decided it would be better to eat at the cafe as being diabetic I needed to have something at the time...A table became available and so we sat down, the manager approached and ordered us only to take our food elsewhere as this was for dine in customers only who would be purchasing “Off the menu” ...the rude and aggressive manner of the “ manager” reminded me of the Tasmanian devil...nice as pie when taking our order...but turned into this full blown aggressive pit bull (sorry if I offend any pit bulls) .. what sort of cafe turns their customers away with a medical condition... no customer skills or professionalism shown at all!! Good luck to any unsuspecting customers... Note to self: take your meds before you leave home...

I was at The Sober Mule today at 9 am 4th Jan , I know It's a busy Period I came to do some work in my computer and after 2 hours and two coffees, the Manager ( old lady). came to me asking if I would order food which I said I don't know yet ( 11 am) suddenly she said, in an irritated tone, that there were people waiting for table, so I suggest split the table , but she was not keen to do that, again she said in a irritated tone that I've been in 2 hours here, and I asked her is she was kicking me out, so I ordered another coffee. My suggestion is add a Sign where stipulate on the entrance that you can't spend more than 1 hour in your table if you don't consume food and have 3 coffees in 2 hours is not allowed, doing this will help to people to make the right choice where to go.

It’s a bare pass for me, real score 2.8 out of 5. I had the avo smash with an extra egg and added bacon. Bizarrely, it was still a small dish for the price even with two extras. You get one slice of lightly toasted bread only, with the two eggs (one standard, one extra) crowded on top. Not only that, the yolks were unforgivably hard not runny. To make matters worse, the dish was cool when it arrived. Not much warmth to be seen. It was a shame because the flavours in the dish were actually quite good. My coffee to finish was ok if a little on the weak side. Service throughout was just OK. Transactional I’d call it with minimal warmth. This was a fairly ordinary experience. There were too many errors here today for me to consider returning.

A great place for coffee, breakfast or lunch. This place have a nice feeling the moment I walked in. A simple decoration and yet very comfortable environment. They have good coffee but I won’t be returning for food as the menu is quite pricey for what you get. Been here twice. First visit, we were greeted by a lady with a warm smile and we were seated immediately. Second visit, wasn’t that pleasant. 2 staff saw us walked in but we were left there standing and waiting to be seated. One went off to clean an empty table and the other just ignore us completely. This place also have a big outdoor playground and a section of bike parking rack that comes with bike pump for bikers.

This restaurant has to be one of the better places around Mornington the owner/chef is old school- that means nothing is a hassle and will do everything he can to ensure his customers walk away happy. Food is great and coffee is really nice. They are open on Sundays again (frikin Covid!!!!) - I miss our Sunday breakies but must obey the rules atm. 14 Nov 21- my goodness I miss this place. Had beakie with my Lizzy this morning and the quality of the food and the service has remained first class. Keep up the great work. -----‐------------ - Waiter! Whats wrong with the eggs in this breakfast? - I don’t know sir, I only laid the table. Come on people - that one is funny

4.5 STARS FOR FOOD!!!!!!! My partner and I popped in for late lunch today. Wasn't overly busy. Seated ourselves and had 5 seconds with the menu before (front of house host maybe?) Dressed different from the rest asked us what we wanted for lunch. Took our coffee order and when I asked for more time she was rather rude. Had to ask twice for water... I asked for a strong latte. It came to me tasting watery, far from hot and it had a horrid taste. Couldn't finish it. We let the staff know and they were passing it on. We had the burgers and they where great. Everything so fresh and it was refreshing to see a burger with a mustard sauce rather than relish.

Hi I am absolutely baffled. I go to the Sober Mule regularly. I like the staff and enjoy the ambience and their chai lattes. I wanted to order breakfast for the first time but a vegetarian one without eggs and bread which was super fine, but when I arrived at the till to pay, there was an extra $5.50 for my toast which I didn't clearly have. The lovely girl behind the counter explained that it's because my order takes time and we have to charge the extra. I'm quite a giving individual but I find this absurd. Admittedly, they amended the bill reluctantly. What next, toilet and water usage? , Sheer robbery I say $5.50 gal. (ps. stick to the menu)

We arrived and thought we would stop and have a coffee or something to eat. We got told by one of the staff that the kitchen had close which is fair enuff, and that they were still serving fries, and still doing coffee. The girl show us to our table we waited and waited it was then 25mins and still no one came over to take our order , mind you they were still welcoming more people in to sit down.we ended up walking out. Staff unhelpful and this cafe now has an ego trip. I used to enjoy coming to this cafe when it was located on the corner and the staff we're great since moving I don't know what's happen bad atomosphere won't be returning.

  • Saranne Dostovaloff

It was my first time here and will 110% be my last. I walked in, waited to be seated as the sign said, however I was waiting for 5 minutes with not one staff member even greeting me. I was treated like a number, not a human, I even asked for water politely to be stared past by the rude staff member who then went back to her conversation with another staff member. They are SO rude, not once was I treated kindly, asked how I am or told to have a good day when leaving and paying, TERRIBLE SERVICE. DO NOT GO HERE, EVER.

  • J Ong

Was slightly confused when I entered and headed towards the counter to start ordering. Would have helped if the counter girl had asked if I was doing takeaway or dining-in. Anyway, an older lady came out and asked the question, who then directed us to our seats and served us very promptly. No issues at all. Food was great, coffee was welcoming on a chilly morning. And did I mention that my son loved the playground outside?

Waited patiently for ages to be served a take away coffee, to be then passively aggressively dismissed by the older In tolerant woman taking my money and my order, she was clearly put out that I paid in cash and with coins! Some people forget that we are the ones by ordering (regardless of how we pay) keeping their business running! Quite disappointed in this woman’s attitude. Quite honestly rude and intolerant behaviour

Being right in the middle of Morningtons homemaker centre The Sober Mule has plenty of parking. There's outdoor and indoor waited seating, but they also have a take away bain marie with hot and cold food. The staff are really friendly and the food is quite nice. They also have an outdoor gated kids playground. Some of the dishes say no alterations or sides but after asking the waitress anyway it seems that's not the case. A missed opportunity for happier customers and extra takings right there.

  • Callan

The food was average at best, over priced. The staff were nice, I got a chunky slow cooked beef Poe. It was mostly mince meat with some onion that contained 3 pieces of a beef chunk that was slow cooked no larger than half the size of my fork. I've had better Pies from a servo where I expect mince meat it was almost completely flavourless. My partner ordered the salt and pepper squid which came out with 5 pieces of squid... The portion size with the price paid was pitiful

  • Phoebe Baker

The food was really nice but I ordered a smoothie and asked to take the banana out of it because it's not my favourite. I totally understand if that isn't possible, but the waitress said it was. 10 minutes later a lady comes out and yells at me that they can't modify anything. It would have been fine if she explained it nicely but she didn't have to yell at me . Won't be going back

Poor service, staff need re-training. Along with several other customers sitting outside, waited a while for table service, then had to remind waitress to take our order. Cut off for lunch/food orders at 2.15? Yet other people were seated inside at the same time with lunch menus? We only wanted coffees and cakes but even got those wrong? New location but same old tired service? Desperately need some competition to lift there game.

Presentation was so good, I forgot to take photos as my smashed avo with micro herbs, fetta, beetroot, dip, and ciabatta , looked mighty delicious...I ate until my plate was clean. So much effort on presentation and so tastes as good as it looks. Staff were super busy, but very little waiting for us.

Guess since no competition nearby they feel they are entitled to act how ever they like. Beware differences with Take away and Dine In. (Pay extra for service, make sure you get some.) Heaven forbid you would like to substitute an item. Flat head tails $19.50 Sweet potato fries $10 A kumbucha $5. Disappointing, as i have wanted to stop by often . Better establishments in town. A very un australian fish n chip.

  • Julie Blundell

We stopped here for lunch and had an excellent meal, both of us... my fish and chips - $18 - was super fresh and very light and non greasy. The chips were crispy and nice! The other meal was the chicken and coconut curry with nan and rice and it too was very yummy! They use bonsoy soy milk for coffees which is always a sign of a quality venue. Worth a visit for a nice lunch and friendly staff!

My grand daughter was refused inside service despite tables being available and was forced to have her breakfast at an outdoor table in the freezing cold, purely because she was in her Padua School uniform. Do they have sometimes against school kids or catholics(which she is not)!? Either way appalling discriminatory behaviour?

Nice surroundings, very good service. But. Coffees (one ordered extra hot) came lukewarm so sent them back for a zap in the microwave; wrong bread served for one of the grilled ham, cheese and tomato sandwiches which were lightly toasted on the outside but cold inside. We do like a bit of melted cheese in a toasted sanger, so disappointed.

The food was terrible! Some how a grilled chicken focaccia was dripping oil? Not to mention the sour cream looked and tasted off. The sweet chilli sauce was incredibly spicy. And the response when we mentioned these things was just plain rude. Will not be going there again!

  • Carol Prowd

We went there today for lunch. Upon receiving kit meals the waitress then coughed all over my partners food. We gave the meal back and her words were.... Oh I was just clearing my throat. One of the worst experiences in my life. And we paid full price. Disgusting.
