I really wish I could give this no stars. As an animal lover, especially reptiles, it was extremely difficult to see the animals at this store. The bunnies looked dehydrated and over heated. The fish tanks are all horribly dirty, we couldn't even see half the fish. I don't know much about birds,but it looked as if some were missing feathers, maybe caused by stress of not being kept well. And finally....the reptiles.all of them looked horrible. The bearded dragons were all missing part of their tails. The environment for these reptiles were all wrong. No UV lighting which can lead to many health problems. Not the right humidity for the reptiles that need humidity. Many of them looked as if they needed to shed,but aren't able to because of this, which can lead to loss of limbs. The red eared sliders had no place to get out of the water and dry off, which is every important. I wish we could have taken all the animals, because these people obviously don't know what they're doing. When I shared my concerns with what I believe is the owner,she seemed very annoyed and didn't seem to care to listen to what I was saying, the tips and advice to properly care for these animals. She said she rescued a lot of the animals, but they're not caring for the animals properly, so that's not rescuing. That's trying to make a profit on an animal someone else thought you might be able to care for. It's so sad, and I really hope someone does something about this place.

I have been going here for years because the owner was very kind and helpful. Unfortunately, she has been out of the store for some time now and the teenager she hired to run the store, Ramon, is by far the most unprofessional and arrogant person I have met in a business, ever. I went in with a broken leash recently and he said he would give me half credit for it. I explained how I had been a regular customer for years, averaging $75 a month for food, etc. He dismissed my concern, called me a "broke ass teacher", and said he was "sorry for my students". I was pretty ticked off at that point but really needed a leash as we were headed out of town within the hour so I told him I would be speaking with the owner regarding his incredibly rude behavior. He then said he changed his mind and would be charging me full price because I was an "a**hole". Unbelievable! I actually went in again a couple of weeks later because I didn't want to drive across town for dog food but they didn't even have the food, and there was Ramon, staring me down, like a tool, in a ripped up shirt. I'll drive the extra few miles to Clark's where I know they'll actually have what I need and won't be treated like dirt. Seriously, this kid has no clue what he is doing, and is running the store into the ground.

I brought my dog there for grooming and nails few times. And Yvonne was kind of cold behavior with me but I try to break the ice with her and tried being friendly with her. But I guess she is finally showed her true racist side . I was scheduled for my dog grooming 2 weeks ago for September 27th 8Am upon my arrival I found out that my dog is not scheduled for today. However Yvonne told me to put my dig in the cage and I asked her that she is afraid of cages. And cry alot she then told me she can't finished by 10:30 ans basically will be in the cage all day. I asked her if she can reschedule my dog she was talking to Mte like I don't understand or speak English..I rescheduled my dog's appointment and while I was walking out Yvonne was totally a different personality to other walking in customers i strongly believe that she is a discriminating me and that's why she is being rude and cold and she rudely act of discrimination will be reported to the manager and better business fir discrimination. I found a new grooming business in the same business building and wad told that they heard a lot about Yvonne being rude and unprofessional to the people from different countries and cultures. I will never give them my business Agin

There was a strong, unpleasant odor upon opening the door that I have never experienced at any other exotic pet store. I asked where a heating item was and the person "helping" me acted like I knew nothing and that I was going to burn my snake alive. She then claimed that a lower temperature would be fine and that because snakes are cold blooded, my snake would adjust (that's not how being cold blooded works). She then gave me other advise that, if followed, would actually burn my snake. Her advise contradicted everything I know, what other reptile keepers have told me, what another reptile store owner told me, what reputable websites recommend, and what YouTube channels (including Snake Discovery) say. She also claimed that the store had been around since the 80's so they know what they're talking about. I didn't look at the reptiles to see how they were being taken care of but based on other Google reviews, I'm guessing this place has been doing it wrong since the 80's. I'm never going back and I would recommend others, especially those less experienced with reptiles, avoid this place.

Honestly, I would go to another pet store for animals. I would argue that even PetSmart is a better option for animals. I understand that Westside Pets is a mom and pop operation but the conditions of the animals are horrid. I strongly believe that even if you are a pet store, if you do not know how to take care of certain animals you should not have nor sell those animals. The store is dingy, moist and the air stinks of ammonia. The fish tanks are full of algae, pest anemones and decaying bodies. I would go to the other reef shops for salt, and anywhere else for fresh. Their prices for everything were also astronomically expensive. Their snakes all had mites and are in poor health. The rest of their reptiles are likewise in health. The small animals are kept in the dark with some of their water having run dry. There was a snapping turtle in a bucket only as big as him, so he was sitting in his own filth all day long. This store parallels and maybe takes inspiration from the late Desert Reef and Aquatics. If they don't make changes I fear Westside Pets will meet the same fate.

The lady who own's the store works for the store. She is very helful and informative. She has been working with pets over 30+ yr's now. Please support her local store. Fyi: To those like Stephanie, you are very uneducated. She takes in reptiles that would of died else wise. You may have seen one in recovery or during their shedding time. So many people buy bearded dragon's then rely on her to save them and take them off their hands. They do to take care of their reptiles!! I shop there and know the owner. No way would she allow an animal to suffer! This is a pet store that has saved lots of reptiles. Tanks are clean silly girl. The rabbits are just fine. I only own one and 8 Guinea Pig's.They are not hot all the time. It is just like us human's. Except with a fur coat. So, yes they can get hot more so in the summer, but she is always sending someone to attend to them actually the most when bird season isn't so active. I see the owner by the bunnies all the time.

I have went into this store ONCE with my girlfriend a few months back and will probably never go again to see how poorly all of these precious animals are cared for was awful some of the birds had been ripping out their feathers id assume do to stress and being kept so closely together. I am a tarantula keeper and own a bearded dragon whom i care for just as well as i would a child and to see the single tarantula they had back in the corner was Awful bald abdomen due to kicking hairs excessively and no webbing within the enclosure improper habitat setups within the tarantulas enclosure and all of their reptiles as well. If i could go back and take them all home i would but will never support this business in fear that they will just put another tarantula/reptile in its place ! And if you are thinking of supporting this place i strongly recommend going literally anywhere else.

When I first walked into the pet store I was very surprised at all the amazing animals they had. I was very delighted when i walked in and saw a five year old happy boy holding a ferret. Later on when i saw that the little boy had left I asked the guy running the shop at the time if I could hold the ferret. After all how can you decide on buying a pet unless you hold it first and see how it reacts to you? I was very disappointed when he not only said no to me but lied as well. He replied saying, "No, the ferrets don't EVER come out of there cage." I was very disappointed with this response and left immediately. I am a 17 year old girl who has always had at least one pet in the house at all times growing up including a ferret. If he replied no to my age I could understand that. Except I had my dad behind me as well.

This is a good store, I think the employees are a little overworked, but the parameters on all the animals are pretty good. There are some reviews that I have read complaining about how the feeder fish look, if you know anything about fish you should know that most pet store feeder fish come from factory fish farms and are not the healthiest fish. This is not a reflection of the store, it's a reflection of factory fish farms. I also read a review about someone who had a fish that got ill after eating a feeder fish, that's entirely not the fault of the pet shop, it's highly advisable to NEVER feed your fish feeder fish. The pet store has customers that want to buy feeder fish and they comply, it's not their fault that people don't do their research and insist on getting feeder fish.

Their feeder fish are in very poor condition with obvious signs of ick. Everytime ive visited this store i left feeling like i was leaving those helpless animals to die in the hands of poor ownership. I once went to buy a lid for my fish tank and when i told them what i looking for the gentlemalen who TRIED to help just told me they dont make that size and i basically didnt know what i was talking about. I couldnt belive what i was hearing as i am a very experienced snake and fish enthusiast. Not only did they have exactly what i was looking for when i went and looked for myself. Also the the loder guy smells like beer and cigarettes.i usually support small businesses but you will never see another one of my hard earnes dollars as long as there are petsmarts and petcos around.

I have two small children, ages 3 & 1, who LOVE visiting pet stores. We went to Westside Pets one once or twice and my kids loved it. The third time we went, there was a younger male employee really pressing me. He was rudely persistent about what it was I wanted to look at, etc. It was almost as if he didn't want me visiting the store unless I was there to buy something on that visit. I haven't returned since and won't. I will say, though, that shortly after my last visit at Westside Pets we went to Clark's Pet Emporium on Lomas. We actually ended up buying a pacman frog at Clark's & it's been with us nearly 5 months. We were very pleased with Clark's & recommend you to their store. Happy (s)hopping!

The staff was very nice but in the past 2 weeks we have purchased 4 separate rats and 3 of them have died . We have been rat owners in the past &they lived for years but my daughter's Christmas present was some rats and a cage and the first time we bought 2 and thought maybe re homing made one pass away so we went back for 2 more to keep it company and then 4 days later the second rat we bought died on Christmas so we thought ok something is up but again thought maybe it was a bad coincidence then today the third rat we bought passed away . We will NEVER go back to this pet shop and you shouldn't either if you're wanting healthy pets .

I’ve been here multiple times without any real issues.. however yesterday I called and asked to have a small rat frozen for my snake. They froze it and when I went in to pick it up today, it was evident that rat had been put into that freezer alive. When I asked, it was confirmed he had been! There are MANY ways to euthanize and freeze a feeder rat and torturing them to death in a freezer is not the way. I am extremely disappointed in the lack of compassion and regard for the animals I saw today. Just because it’s meant for food does not mean the animal should be frozen alive and die an agonizing death. Where’s the humanity?

Made my dogs grooming appointment a month in advance for the last week of July because they get booked and I wanted to make sure I had an appointment for them.... called to confirm the date, the lady said she didnt find it on the books so she would have the groomer call me, she didn't call so I called her and she said I wrote it down for a week after you picked them up, I'm not doing more than 6 dogs so I can take them end of August. Didn't help offer any other solutions, could have said I will make sure I call you if I have cancellations but nope nothing! Needless to say I will be looking for a new groomer. :(

The women here are absolutely rude and not helpful the big lady with the whiny voice was incredibly rude when I walked it she yelled at me and told me to get out of the store while their door was wide open. I told her I was just here for feeder rats and she told me no that I have to leave. I have purchased all my mice and rats from here and have never been treated like this at this location. Their pets look malnourished and the birds look like they need to be sent out for rehabilitation. Please take better care of your animals and your customers.

I haven’t bought an animal here because I hadn’t discovered this place until after I had my chameleon for about a year. They have so many birds and reptiles that are so pretty for sale here, but I go here to get crickets for my chameleon because it’s close. They’re more expensive than Clark’s and the chain pet stores and they didn’t even give me how many I asked for. I asked for 30 and they gave me a bag with just shy of 20. Also they were extremely small, weak crickets that didn’t last long whatsoever. Next time I’ll be going to Clark’s

Owner is very kind, and I love how they take In rescues considering how many there are with exotic pets. It's been a well known fact for those in the reptile/exotic animal hobby someone will see a cute little baby that will eventually grow very large and have requirements that inexperienced keeper can't provide so these leads to a lot of exotic animal deaths. Fortunately though this place exists here in Albuquerque. Great place to support, have lots of exotic animals, supplies, aquariums/terrariums, and feeders!

Amazing owner, and happy healthy animals. Variety of animals, and takes in rescues. Takes the time to answer questions and educate. They try to prevent the birds from picking themselves after coming from stressful environments and takes care after stressful molting. Let's the animal pick the owner, doesn't just give the animals to whoever. Keeps animals for years to find their perfect home! I hope this is all true, and if it is I would HIGHLY recommend this amazing little shop!

DO NOT COME HERE PLEASE! horrible staff! went there like 2 weeks ago and told the guy I needed 4 hoppers for my snake. Then he told me that my snake only needed 1 because 4 was too much. He kept saying 1. I know how much my snake eats! He doesn’t know anything. He was extremely rude. They should just shut this place down, all the animals are in terrible shape! Also, the young girl who works there is also extremely rude! She won’t even talk to you she’ll just ignore you.

My perfectly healthy, extremely resilient tiger oscar whom I'd had since he was a baby (about 5 years) got EXTREMELY ill after eating a couple feeder fish from this establishment. He went from prospering and healthy to being sick and after countless medicines/treatments and money spent, he passed away. I have not once set foot in this store since. I never once had this issue when I go to a real pets store, I will stick to real pet stores going forward.

I moved to ABQ 3 years ago and was upset I forgot what amazing pet store I went to, but when I walked in the other day I immediately remembered it was this one. My sense of direction is definitely off, however, their customer service is spot on every time! Lasting impression!!! They are so knowledgeable and you can tell they love those animals! These qualities are ONLY found at a local pet store. I’m so thankful I found this one again!

The workers are very rude. I just went in with a couple questions and got shut down before I could even ask one. I watched the man at the register talk and talk to a woman giving her good info for her pets, only to turn to me and give me attitude and no useful information. During the middle of a conversation, one of the employees answered his cell phone and walked away. Not a good experience at all and I will never shop there again.

Absolutely terrible! I had been going to west side pets for longer then I can remember but the last time I went I was disrespected,disgusted and disappointed. I had informed the young girl up front about some animals in absolutely horrific condition and I was ignored and after I repeated myself all I got was a “oh well they’re going to die anyway “ You’ve lost my business and everyone else I know. Bad business and bad morals.

Purchased a python snake and all accessories here yesterday, spent over $400.... came home and set up his new home only to discover he has mites! Called the store to notify them and the worker didn't show any care at all! I told her I was mostly concerned with the care of the other reptiles there and she just rudely said they're all fine. I wouldn't recommend buying your animals here, we're very disappointed in this shop!

Love this store but I always feel uncomfortable, like they watch you like hawks. You could be a nun and they will treat you like you’re going to rob them blind. I understand there’s a difference between offering help and thinking your customers are going to steal from you. And in this case it’s the latter. After my most recent visit don’t think I will be going back again, I will stick with petco or petsmart.

I brought my Jack-chi puppy to get his nails done. He was scared because he'd never been to this place before.We we're checking it out.The lady was very patient with him. I held onto him. Even though she put a muzzle on him.I have to say I've never had a problem getting his nails done before. My puppy and I had a good experience. Unfortunately I have to bring him to the last place where he was not scared.

This place is great! Awesome selection of pets and pet supplies + dog grooming!! The staff here are all great ppl and they do more than just sell you stuff! They are super knowledgeable about all animals they sell and even help with excellent suggestions from food and nutrition to cages and bedding! Excellent local shop, I'd choose these guys over any of the big name corporate suits any day!

Good if you aren't looking to purchase fish. Some staff members are helpful, a few are not, and a couple are straight up rude. A lot of dead fish in fish tanks. Otherwise they usually have some more exotic pets that do seem well cared for. The owner is nice and knowledgeable as well as a couple of people on her staff. Don't expect to get asked if you need help. You'll have to ask for it.

This is the best pet store in the world!! The owner has the kindest ❤️ she literally went out of her way to help our poor pet parakeet who got attacked by our dog. It lives because of her. Thank so much for being so kind! Being there and helping us and not expecting anything back! Very few people in the world like that. God will bless you for being so selfless & amazing!!

Very well-stocked for dogs, birds, fish, hedgehogs (like the ones doing a puddle snuggle in the picture), guinea pigs, and rabbits; did not find much in the way of supplies for cats, but I may have missed something? Staff was friendly, and it seems like a good place to go find supplies overall, 4 stars only cuz I couldn't find cat supplies....

I come here for feeders for my snakes. The shop is older, but the staff are knowledable and they do a great job with rescuing a lot of reptiles from not so caring homes. There is a good selection of items for any type of let you might have and they also have some great pets to check out, feather, scales, and fur ...oh my!!!

I'm very sad to say that this pet store is pretty gross. It is hot and stinky. I know that is something that comes along with animals but not if their living quarters are kept clean and properly ventilated. When walking my daughter through the fish area there were skeletal remains of fish on the ground under the tanks.

This is the Pet store to shop at. You’re supporting a local business and the reason for the “ a bit pricey “- Their level of care for all there animals, reptiles,etc. The quality of the animals they receive are much better than the chain stores. They’re friendly and extremely knowledgeable. This is the place to go!

I go to buy bird food. Some times they don't have the one I like so I have to get food I'm not too happy about because of all the unheal stuff it contains for my birds. And the store is kind of stuffy the rodents have the place a little smelly. But other than that it's an OK place to run in and out of.

I brought my pug in to have his nails trimmed last week. The young lady who helped us was so patient and kind and gave him the best nail trim of his life! We will definitely be back. While I was there I noticed a wide array of pet supplies and beautiful birds. Support this awesome local buisness!

Very friendly staff. Nice selection of any kind of animal needs. Our fish was sick and the employee was extremely helpful in trying to find solutions on how to help him. They have tons of animals here! Such a great selection! I'd rather support this local shop instead of Petsmart or Petco.

I really would like to give this place more stars because it’s locally owned I mean but if you’re there for an aquarium, the prices are gonna be higher and then the fish are atrocious. Their aquarium department is just filthy and very not well cared for at all, they clearly don’t care.

This place has some really good deals and a nice variety of pets. Though. This place can use a nice regular cleaning. The tanks most of the critters are in are pretty dirty too. You guys have parakeets nest branch thingies and thats a super plus cause i couldnt find it in any stores.

best customer care i’ve experienced in a long time. super helpful. the pets are a little pricey but absolutely worth it. the owner is so good with her animals and it absolutely shows. i’ve been coming here when i’m in the area since 2005, when i went to school around the corner.

Poor reptiles were extremely underweight and all had shedding issues along with none of their tanks being cleaned no uvb on animals that require it. Rabbit looked very hot. fish tanks were disgusting. Such poor living conditions for all animals I wish I could save them all.

Love this store, the owner is one of the most compassionate women you'll ever meet, she takes great pride in the care and sales of ALL of the pets in her store! Excellent knowledge base of ALL of the pets she carries, local owned, local operated too. Come check them out!

I have been doing business with WSP for years! Wouldn't even think of going somewhere else. Diane is so knowledgeable about everything and anything. Not to mention the people she hires, are friendly and know what they are doing as well. I could hang out there all day!

My favorite store ❤️ Acceptable prices. They will always answer any question and help you. Very attentive sellers. A very large selection of parrots, lizards, snakes, freshwater fish, salt aquariums, there are also sugar gliders, and a lot of accessories for any pets.

We are from out of town and needed to get our African Grey parrot more seed,decided to stop here.We were greeted by the owner of the store. She was very knowledgeable and friendly. All the birds appeared well taken cared of. The store is well stocked.

This pet store is a icon in the community and has been around for decades. I like their inventory, but I really love their customer service. They're friendly, knowledgeable and empathetic. I would pick this location over PetSmart all day everyday.

Updating my review because this is my preferred pet shop. While there's little space to move around, the prices are great. Kinda regretting that I spent twice as much on heat lamps for my snake at Clark's. They're also super friendly and helpful.

I really appreciate the knowledge, care and attention my birds get when bringing them in for grooming. There is always a very large selection for toys, food and accessories for my little ones. Plus, local, always good to support local.

Good-looking, healthy animals. I have driven from southern Arizona to purchase hedgehogs from here. They have done well. I always get good husbandry information from the staff. I have purchased reptiles as well.

They gave me a ton of useful information about a hermit crab that I was purchssing for a gift. They even had the specialty food that my dog eats. I haven’t been able to find it locally. Highly recommend!

For being a pet store, it is surprisingly clean. The staff is very knowledgeable, I was surprised by just how much she new!!! Answered every question I had. Gave me some good advise aswell!!

This is a great place to buy stuff for your bird or small animal. It's a little pricey as far as the toys but the people are really good people. I got my lovebird Splash from here.

Got a Hedgehog plus a lot of info and a starter kit for her. Also feel in love with many animals there. I highly recommend get a pet or supplies her they really care for animals!

I do like this place a lot especially since I like supporting small businesses. I would not recommend the grooming if you have a Shih tzu, but I would recommend everything else
