Avoid, avoid, avoid. They bill your credit card during a hire and refuse to tell you why. Further to this, I contacted the bank and they have cancelled the card and are going to initiate the dispute process to get my money back. Avis's solution was to suggest I send them my bank account details....... As if! Next day update - now they are telling me I have returned the car even though I am half way through the hire and they are keeping my money until the audit finishes. It looks like I scored a car for $107.90 but I would still avoid them if I was you! (I do tend to have incredibly good luck and I cant promise that outcome for all of you!) Further update, because I told them I hadnt returned the car (because I have it until september) they are now trying to charge my credit card $107.90 a day even though I still have the car on hire. Go elsewhere unless you want to pay for a car hire and then pay for it twice even though you have returned it when you havent..... Update - my insurance company told them to return my money because THIS IS NOT MY BILL TO PAY! Avoid Avis, they do not listen to you when you tell them what is going on with their own agreements. Even as I read the email from my insurance company confirming the car hire is until a date in September I am reading a text from Avis saying the car hire ended on monday and I owe them money! Dodgy as! A week later and Avis is still pretending they dont know what is going on. 2 weeks into this saga and now AVIS is claiming to have no knowledge of this reservation. I have their car and they dont want to refund my money because there is no reservation.... Avoid them unless you want this to be the memory of your holiday when hiring their car! I have gone to the ombudsman but am wondering if I should just keep the car and let them have the money they stole! AVIS has finally admitted they billed me when they shouldnt have! Only because I went to the ombudsman and refused to give up for what has been two weeks of AVIS giving me tasks I refused to complete because, quite simply, I dont work for them or the insurance company, it is up to them to sort out their financial mess, not me! Now I wait to see if I actually get my refund! The next chapter, still waiting for my refund. Instead they sent me a copy of an agreement with my signature on I have never seen and certainly didnt sign. Complete silence from AVIS when I told them for the 10000th time I have no agreement with them, I never signed an agreement. No concern expressed about the obvious scam being carried out. In the name of AVIS. I can only conclude AVIS, not rogue staff, has stolen my money and placed my signature on an agreement I never sighted and never signed.

AVOID ! What a full of rubbish. Lols. May everyone that work for this company will get treated well by Lucifer. Bless all your soul. This guys will overcharged your card without informing you or signing any other agreement form. I don’t see a point disputing a transaction, they can have my $700 as donation. Well this guys can ask me nicely if they want more Lols money can be earned with dignity but alright. They do what they need to do. If it’s too late for you to cancel your booking, always asked them to print a fine print of what they told you, for example if they giving you a car upgrade for free, tell them to print a contract for that. This company is very MISLEADING. Scam. Felt like dealing with third world country company, oh let me rephrase that , Third world is way better than this guys. Well I should have read the red flags , the charge in my card is coming from overseas, receptionists have to ask me when I got there to enable international payments on my card since they can’t make the deduction . I should have gone to Budget instead. Oh well. That’s alright, will tell all my friends and co workers, all people that I know not to go to this company. Thanks. Bless you all.

Pricey rental specially when they set a limited amount of km you can do (and then charge you if you exceed it, which you easily do when on vacation around Tasmania). They found a scratch which we can't explain, as we had an incident-free ride, and said they would take a bond of 1000 AUD to fix it although "it will most likely cost less" they said (we had to sign a document to authorise that amount). We asked to be informed about quotes from the different companies that could fix it, to make sure we were not charged with an unfair price. We got no further information on the following days and now we see they have taken about 1350 AUD from our account, more than we had signed for. Without our consent, without an explanation, with total impunity. They don't even seem reachable by phone or mail (inexistente). It feels like the customers have no rights nor choices and are completely at their mercy since they have our card number and can take as much as they want at anytime.

Booked van months ago, went to collect it for a roadtrip to be told it wasn't ready and we had to wait. Then, after waiting we were told there wasn't one available, and we would have to drive 20 minutes away to the next store, where there was definitely one waiting for us. We were already running late by this stage, but decided there was nothing we could do, so we drove to town to collect, only to be told upon arrival that there wasn't a van for us there and there never was. Booked months in advance for no reason, outright lied to us multiple times, wasted an hour of our time and 40 minutes of fuel, and we still didn't even get a van we needed for our trip. Inexcusably bad service, and a level of incompetence that shouldn't be possible. Tl:Dr totally unreliable. Don't care if they're cheap, it's not worth the risk. You're lucky if you actually get what you order.

I called the main office to hire a vehicle, they tried to organise it but couldnt. They gave me the direct number to the Hobart Airport. I called to ask if it was available for two days time. She said she didnt know. Wouldn't help. Asked me to write an email. This is the 4th time I have tried to hire from Avis and they always say they have to ask the state manager, you can only have a reserve booking. I have called back to see if it was secured and they still didnt know. Twice they said they would call back to let me know if it could be secured. They didnt call back. When I call the Hobart airport there is always a really rude lady on the line who shouldn't be in customer service. Go to Budget, Hertz, or bargain.

DON'T trust these people. My husband and I were renting through Avis and phoned to ask if we could drop the car off at the downtown location as opposed to the airport. The agent on the phone informed us we could, however the location would be closed and we just needed to drop the car off during after hours. We arrived at the downtown location and there was no where to drop the car off or leave the keys. We called Avis back and we're informed that the drop off location had never been changed. Apparently the agent we talked to had no idea what the rules were or what she was talking about. These people are completely incompetent. Rent from somewhere else.

Booked a car for ten days in Hobart and arrived an hour earlier and willing to wait one hour until the 10 am allotted time for pick up. However, Duty Manager got through his waiting customers and then processed us but did not inform us we would be charged for this! Consequently, when returning the car I found that I was charged $27 for being an hour early on my bankcard statement. I phoned and complained about this but no one responded! I sent an email that bounced through to the American branch....no email address for Hobart Downtown! Obviously, they do not like dealing with complaints in any form as leads to a trail!!!!

Fantastic service offered by the staff when I collected the car on Saturday 9th July @ 11am. Very supportive with my request and provided a stress free situation. This was equally matched by the dropoff staff. Avis should be proud of these employees. Update - Down graded from 5 stars. Although on the outside it appeared they were being helpful, that actually scammed me for additional money. This is is disgraceful and I am in the process of recovering the overcharged amount. Avis should be ashamed of these actions.

I found them to be quite helpful in the office... But NEVER give them a call... You will get the Philippines talking back to you, without the relevant answers you want... So Now I have to go into Hobart to see if I have left some lost property... So hard and such a Waist of my time talking to someone who Isn't in the Office.... I'm not a happy chappy in that instance... Come on Avis employ an Australian, not go overseas to answer the Bloody Phone.... #nothappyjan

While the location is very convenient and the pickup process was easy and efficient there is no communication coming from staff afterward. Tried to call 5 times to report an issue, dropped our car off before their apparent closing time to find the office and garage locked. The staff trampled out 5 minutes later not acknowledging any customers (3 of us dropping off cars at the time). Appalling lack of customer service.

Long term business customer using multiple locations around Australia. My experience with Hobart was just really bad. How can a business that rents out vehicles not be able to advise if a vehicle is available. We had to lodge an "enquiry" and wait, days...for no-one to get back to us. If we ran our business like that we would be finished. Avoid if possible.

The car was okay but the company is horrible. The car wasn't full of fuel when we got it and had to pay more to fill it up. They still haven't given me my bond back saying it can take a month if not longer. Some of the people that work there are exceptionally rude and their computer systems are down a lot so they can't access your files.

Pickup and drop off was easy and people at the counter were nice too but I had to pay $55 extra to drop off a day early :( Wont be using Avis anymore. I thought I would get less charge or same as what I was quoted as I dropped out after 3 days though I reserved for four days but I had to pay extra and not too happy about it.

I am a travel agent so had pre-booked to pick up a car for my holiday in Tassie. When I arrived at my allocated pick up time the line up of people was out the door and half way around the block. I had to wait over 2 hours before I made it to the front of the line, therefore missing a tour I had booked for that same day.

We rented a 12 Seater bus but when we got the invoice, it was charged 2 extra hours. We returned the bus at 9AM but charged for up to 11:15 AM ($66 more without VAT). Tried following up 100s times but every time customer service gives the same answer that they are following up. Will never rent again from them.

Upfront pricing, no nasty surprises at the end with these guys, which I love. Honest, friendly and efficient service, with some local knowledge thrown in to help improve your trip a little. Clean, reliable cars just top it off. If you need a car for a trip, give these guys a go, they won't let you down.

When I tried to do after hours drop off, the call centre had absolutely no clue as to where I should park the car. When I called the guy said "not this place again", so I am not the first to encounter this yet they still have no info updated in their notes. Car itself and the rate were excellent.

WORST EXPERIENCE I’ve ever had, period. Has to wait 2 hours in a line to collect my keys for a pre-booked car, only to be told the car is not ready yet even though I had it booked for collection 3 hours earlier. Raise the issue with customer service, zero reply, zero acknowledgement.

We ordered a 4WD but then when we landed in Tasmania, they said they ran out of them so we had to take another, smaller vehicle. Also the car reeked of leather polish which was funny because the car didn't have leather. Do yourself a favour, avoid these crooks at all costs

Filled up the car 1 km before airport. Inspected at drop off, no receipt sent them when I chased it up that charged $147 for fuel and wanted me to show fuel receipt to prove I filled it. Didn't have the car I requested and charged me then the quote. Hopeless

Was very hesitant to book with these guys after seeing all the negative reviews but we found the service very friendly and the car we got was new and clean inside. The overall booking process was smooth and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to others.

We had a 12pm pickup reservation on a Saturday. When we got there, they had already closed for 12pm. They never told us to get there early to be able to pick up our 12pm reservation before they closed at 12pm. Went with another provider instead!

Secretly charged me more than $100 over nothing. I wouldn't find it out if I didn't check my banking transactions. Honestly, this is my second time using this company and it really disappointed me and I will never use them ever again.

Horrible. Arrived to car rental and lined up with 20 other people for 45 minutes to be told there were no cars available for another 30-45 minutes. The managers exact words were "it is what it is." I'm sorry but what a joke!

Convenient location, reasonable price and friendly, prompt service. Downside are the limited opening hours for pick up, however it is possible to drop the car prior to the official opening times.

I came for work and booked awhile ago. Checking in was a breeze and efficient and was pleased with my vehicle. Hoping the check out at Launceston is just as good. I would book with Avis again.
