I've had some unfortunate experiences at the downtown Edmonton Library, which, despite being a library, has transformed into what seems like a daytime "homeless shelter" for many. It's disheartening to witness a place that could provide support and refuge falling short in several critical ways. The foremost issue is the treatment of community members. Some staff members exhibit rudeness and, at times, seem to gang up on those who seek service & comfort here. It's a stark contrast to the library's mission of inclusivity and community support. What's even more concerning is the lack of action to address these issues. Safety is paramount, especially for those with children seeking service here. However, the environment raises doubts about the library's commitment to this aspect. People openly use drugs within the bathroom facilities, with little to no intervention from staff. There are individuals under the influence right at the doorways, creating an unsafe atmosphere. It's as if management is turning a blind eye to these issues. The management of this facility, predominantly overseen by middle-aged white women, seems out of touch with the very principles of safety, comfort, and well-being that they should uphold. Allowing people to sleep on the concrete outside the door and tolerating drug use within the premises showcases a lack of proper management and oversight. The most alarming issue is the prevalence of undesirable elements, including drug addicts, who have overtaken the library's environment. It's disheartening to witness the library losing its welcoming atmosphere. What's even more concerning is the lack of intervention to tackle these issues. Again The library's management seems to be turning a blind eye to the problems that have overrun the space. The library itself has the potential to offer a safe and enriching experience for everyone, but its current state is far from that ideal. It's high time for the library's management to take action and restore this valuable community resource to a place where all visitors can feel safe and comfortable. Accountability must be taken seriously, and changes need to be made.
Ladies and gentlemen, I've stumbled upon a place in Edmonton that's more loaded than a baked potato at a steakhouse. This place is like a treasure trove of creative resources, with an impressive lineup of tools and gadgets that will make even Tony Stark jealous. And the cherry on top? It's all completely FREE! I'm talking about a wonderland of books, 3D printers, recording studios, sewing machines, circuit workstations, and so much more. It's like the Swiss Army knife of community spaces, with something for everyone to enjoy. The only catch? Finding a parking spot can be trickier than finding Waldo in a sea of Waldos. But trust me, it's worth the effort. In fact, if it were up to me, I'd be taking my offspring there every week faster than you can say "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious." So if you're looking for a place to unleash your inner Picasso, Edison, or Martha Stewart, this joint is your one-stop-shop. Just make sure to bring your patience (and a good map) when it comes to parking.
I"m genuinely impressed with this library! It's outstanding with its modern facilities, including 3D printing, various studios to record and everything, and even a gaming room. The overall ambiance is welcoming and aesthetically pleasing, making it an ideal spot for studying and relaxation. However, there's a significant challenge with space availability. Many homeless individuals have found refuge here, which, while understandable, has impacted the availability of seating and PC use for students like myself. The presence of security is reassuring, but the situation often leads to a noisy and less clean environment. It's a bit disheartening because the library has such great potential as a study space, but currently, it doesn't fully serve the needs of all its patrons. Hoping for a positive change in the future.

August 26, 2021 the new location of the library is the the old location but renovated. It is an amazing renovation. You have to come to experience it. Lots of open air areas and seating is plenty. This is a review of the temporary location at the Bay building at Jasper and 103 St. It’s small location so extremely crowded. It has all the services of the library at their regular location at Churchill Square but not a lot of material. If you need something specific then you will have to order it and wait. This location is old and not so clean. It’s well lit. It’s a good thing the new main branch will be opening in February 2020 because this location is nasty.
I went to get a new library card and to look around. It's been a long time since I have visited. It looks wondrous inside, especially the gigantic aquarium of sea creatures on the first floor. There are many stations to look up books and places to sit. I was helped by a very nice and helpful librarian who knew a lot about the library and was obviously a fan of her workplace. I saw several security personnel on the first 2 floors I was on, which is a good idea for this location. However, on the day I was there I did not feel concerned while entering & exiting, or at all while I was there. I look forward to visiting again, soon.
Other then the lady east Indian security worker and her continued rude behavior and favoritism, it's pretty great. I play piano there almost 3 times a week or whenever I can get there, because I have people who have started multiplying and are "fans" that come when they know I'm there. I really appreciate that. I play every Saturday around 1 and frequently through the week, at various times. Piano is closed between 11:30 and 1 though daily. Update.im changing my review to 5 stars. The security guard seems to be much more polite . Makes my experience much much better.
I don't know why this security has problems with me when my right hip and leg with my knee cap is popping out. And have a hard time walking up to second floor. Ask him why he needs to follow me so close to me on the way up the stairs. Been going to library I was 16 teen to 58 year's old but charge my phone head-phone , off and on there. To scared of Security now... when I give them great reviews on how they handle the addicted and the difference of weird people coming in...
Amazing building, staff and atmosphere. Edmonton has amazing libraries tbh, and this location has some amazing features that the public can use. #3dprinter #cricutmachine #ps5 #classicvideogames #gamingroom #lightroom #recordingstudio #makerspace #photoshop #cookingclasses #archives #newspaper #magazine #digitaloranologue #audiobooks I am sure I am missing details and I have pictures but I will add them as I remeber them and photos as I find them. #grandpiano #piano
I visited the library recently, and I must say, it's a lovely place. The atmosphere is welcoming , making it a perfect spot for reading or studying. The employees were incredibly kind and helpful, ready to assist with any inquiries or recommendations. Overall, a delightful experience that I'd highly recommend to anyone looking for a great place to spend some quiet time surrounded by books and friendly staff.
A great place for book lovers. Almost everyone I've contacted to clarify information or for help has done so quickly and with pleasure. Recently, one of the librarians, Grace, showed me around, told me everything, and was a pleasure to talk to. At the same time, I don't know English very well. Thank you, Grace, thank you, library advisors
The library itself would be great if it wasn't for the homeless problem. Usually theres some zombie guy yelling accross the street. Library manners are also not enforced so expect running, loud talking, music blaring, and peaople eating here. It's a shame because there's a lot of great resources here like 3D printing and classes.
This place has serious health, and safety concerns. Shame on the staff for letting children be exposed to such a level of drug & alcohol abuse. Also the amount of dishonest, fake, or paid reviews is just testament to how dishonest, manipulative management can be to ignore accountability from concerned members of the community.
S.A.M library is truly a downtown Edmonton gem I’ve enjoyed the maker space, and the staff there are so helpful and kind. It’s super lively in there full of ppl and the layout is really cool for a wander around/ nice they have a second cup within! Looking forward to taking advantage of more of their free services
Highest possible rating for this amazing public library. I was very impressed with the publicly accessible sewing studio, audio studios, video studios, 3D printers, vinal cutting, musical instrument library, public movie viewing and all the programs. The librarians were friendly, helpful and approachable.
Anyone in the community who wants to study, develop, and socialise should definitely check out the Edmonton Public Library. Its dedication to variety and inclusivity makes it a valuable resource for the community, and its committed staff makes sure people receive excellent support and service.
Coming from a country that doesnt have libraries even half size of this. I cant describe how amaze I am in this library with all the book collections, spacious reading space, book collections to the various activities that people can do in their sparetime. And all of them are for free.
Wow! The Edmonton central library is not the same I remember when I was a kid. A glorious building with so many things to do. Cooking classes, a maker space, and kids space… the Calgary downtown library is prettier for sure but the Edmonton library has better over all amenities.
I love this library and I come here often. The only inconvenience is that there’s not a lot of study spaces as they filled up very quickly throughout the day. I do love the fact that they have a collection of board games to play in-house on the third floor, which is pretty cool.
Great experience, underground parking, Second Cup on location while you visit. They offer books, movies and games plus a gaming room with consoles, music recording rooms, stitching area, 3D printers, baking and fabrication classes and the list goes on. Worth while to visit!
Such a beautiful library. Very spacious, easy to locate things. Lots of area to walk around or sit. Plenty of computers. Lots of staff and volunteers to make sure everyone in the building is safe...I even like the look of the outside of the building. Good job on this one
I wasn't sure what to make of the renovation at first, but it's definitely grown on me. The exterior architecture might be a bit hit or miss for some folks, but the old facade was of the same architectural tradition of the old Remand Centre
Well done! We focused on the kids section and was real new and clean. Books are brand new and very well organized. Lots of variety of books that we just spent hours and hours to go through. We LOVE the toilet! There's a tiny toilet and sink
Inside there are many books and magazines, access to the Internet and a PC, there is a creative and recording studio (even a few) Very comfortable and clean, good and helpful staff who are happy to help
Amazing place ! The library also offers 3D printing courses, studio recording, t-shirt printing, a video game area, and so much more. I have never seen a Library like this, great experience. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Just because I've had a long day and need to change my devices the security are being a-holes and saying since my head is down means I'm sleeping and now I'm getting kicked out for It. So thanks.
Excellent place to enjoy games, books, and magazines. Printing is convenient. Staff is so very helpful. The decore, paintings on the wall, lively colors, plugin units, everything is beautiful.
There are a noticeable homeless individuals around, but the security staffs are present to maintain control and address any potential issues. Despite this, the overall environment is pleasant.
I had a very quick stop. Just picked up a hold I had. Staff are friendly. They have security posted at the entrance. Usually some homeless people hanging out outside the door.
I hadn't been there in a while and I was impressed. Check out the pic of the HUGE video system in the main lobby! And there are more stations on the opposite side.
Enjoyed the YEG international film festival screenings at the library. Great night with EIFF patrons, volunteers and library staff. Loved all of the films too!
I'm so thankful that we got lost and ended up on such a beautiful library. Take your kids as there are limitless activities to do and the stuff is fantastic!
Very impressive facility. Definitely the best library I've been too. Plenty of resources from music production, 3d printing, gaming, reading and more.
They have a wide variety of books and programs. Plenty of places to sit and nice window views. It may smell a little interesting, but it is tolerable
The library is the place we can enjoy all year round, my children have grown up and still have fun with games, read books and play chess.
The interactive displays are awesome. They rotate between space, ocean and dinosaurs. So amazing for kids and adults too.
Nice place to read, work, and study. You can print your papers and have a second cup (coffee) on the lobby.
Great library! Lots of things for the kids! Parking is free and they have super clean washrooms
