It's just "eh" really. Im a native to this area and grew up playing on this reservoir as a child. I was excited to see the depth of growth over the last 20 years. I was sadly disappointed to find there are absolutely no publicly owned public access points to Giest reservoir. All points of access are privately owned by the communities (blocking access with wealth) instead. Even lake Monroe (the cleanest reservoir) offers access to see the water and do things that encourage being out in nature...you know ...like sweat and stuff outside in the sun (not in an air conditioned gym). Trails at this "park" are a bit unkempt, overgrown and in one area smelled like human p*$$! Had one single broken picnic table and one single bench with overgrown weeds around it to sit near the dam to hear the water but sadly can't see water from the bench. I brought a young child in stroller to hike with me. Won't go again.
Before we went, I read some reviews. I saw some that seem to complain about utility equipment nearby. Just so you know, a dam with a reservoir *is* a utility. Having said that, this was our first time going to the park, so we didn’t know what to expect. There is a small area from the trail to see a bit of the reservoir. It has one bench. We’d hoped that there would be a larger area with a better view, but not so. After all, it is Fall Creek Trail, and follows the creek. As others have mentioned, it doesn’t seem to be well maintained. Well aged soda and booze bottles nestle amongst the poison ivy which turned us back from completing the trail. No thanks on an itchy rash. There are a couple of broken picnic tables in a grassy area. No facilities. All in all, not a horrible place to get in a short hike if you’re careful of the ivy. A little more maintenance would go a long way here.
There's a small parking lot near the trail head off the main road, Park Hours are from Dawn to Dusk and vehicles are threatened to be towed after hours. The beginning of the trail has soft pea size gravel with small inclines as it snakes around a retention pond fence for a utility company. Most of the trail is gravel consistency for driving over. There are several utility pumps and a couple power lines that might add mechanical hum and displeasure to nature seekers. Overall it's a shady walk and getting to the creek was a delight for me as I found a bunch of bluegill nesting. Definitely worth my time. There are a few benches along the trail, but the plants have grown over them enough to make it undesirable on using. People also do not clean up after their animals on this trail, so be mindful of where you step.
Great, scenic location for a park but the maintenance of the park by Indy Parks is poor. Perhaps this is due to how far away it is from other Indy Parks facilities or how few amenities there are here. There are no restrooms, water fountains, or other facilities. The parking area is extremely small. None of these things are issues for people planning ahead, but may catch others by surprise. Unfortunately there are some users of the park who don't respect the land nor other people using it. Litter, particularly alcohol and food containers, are often scattered along the trail.
A fine little trail with potential to connect it to more, but they haven't managed to make those connections yet. We had to walk through a shopping mall parking lot to get to the loop around a pond south of where this trail is, and it would be nice for it all to interconnect. It's definitely littered by utility structures, probably used for water supply.
The trail is a pleasant walk, and there are a few benches. It would be better if the trail proper were extended to the back of the strip of shops at Fall Creek and 82nd. Regarding wheelchair accessible, while there's a parking lot and the beginning of the trail is level, most of it is not accessible.
This is a nice place to hike. The actual Trail isn't that exciting and could be better maintained and built out better. But if you go off-trail there's some cool stuff. There's a lot of great places to play in the creek with your kids and explore if you go off trail.
I am giving this park 5 stars for a surprisingly magical fall colors that peaks in late October on this trail. It was quite a nice surprise. It was only a very small area in the park but it still did not disappoint. I am definitely coming back.
Nice trail , well kept. Did this trail early spring in the morning. It was very peaceful and quiet . It was about 1 hour walk total from and to the parking at a slow to moderate pace for about 2 miles.I have encountered a few people with dogs.
Nice nature walk, but beware. The trail is a bit overgrown. Good for walking and bicycling, but dont bring skates thinking it's going to work out. Quite a long trail, so be sure to bring some water in the summer months.
Nice place for a walk. The trail is gravel and follows the Creek after you get to the bottom of the hill. There are houses East of the trail so it sort of feels like walking through their back yards.
We thought this was a great place to take a walk and explore nature! There are a couple of side trails that are fun to explore and the scenery is beautiful. We'll definitely be going back!
I've never actually used this trail. I always walk the deer paths and shoreline by the river. There are tranquil little streams and lots of local wildlife, specifically birds.
The road is gated off to prevent people from getting too close to the utility building, so the walk to the water takes a narrow trail. There also isn't much room for fishing.
Parked here for an hour yesterday and came back to my window smashed in + purse stolen. Apparently there are no cameras in the parking lot so be careful!
Nice little trail that isn't too far off the beaten path. Unfortunate that the dam is closed, but you can still get in sight of it at least!
Haven't walk the whole trail, I just went to the dam to see water fowl. People come here and don't keep their dogs on a leash.
I've been here briefly, it's a fun place to explore, but not very much in the nature. I saw a lot of man made things here.
Enjoyable, very easy, local trail. Especially popular on the weekends and evenings. Lots of people bring their pet dog.
Party and concert on the lake, great time hD by all. Thanks John Huntzinger and his wife for another Epic Party!!!
Caught 5 or 6 bluegill and 1 crappie little bit of a walk but not many places to bank fish at Geist
It’s a water treatment trail, meh. It’s okay but I would not go back. I found a few pretty parts.
I love these place for walking. The parking is very small but I really like to walk in the trail.
Very quiet and nice place to take a little hike at. Even has benches to sit down at.
Not much room for fishing, but the trails are well kept and we enjoyed it.
Great trail.. great water areas and quiet. A lot of birds chirping around
Nice trail going behind the dam area to a beautiful lake.
This trail is approximately 5 minute long.
So pretty, is nice for family!
