Great place for a morning or evening walk for beautiful views. This is always a go-to place to take family when they come to visit as you get to see so much of the valley without the workout. Please keep your pets at home at this is a limited space and can cause some issues at the top. Parking directly at the trail head is limited but there is plenty of more parking spaces around this side of the park. Bathrooms are at the next parking lot after the hole in the rock. Not recommended for someone with balance or stair concerns. The trail length one way is less than 5 min and mostly stair type climbing with no hand rails. Same with once you reach the top and enter into the cave. Be careful and watch your step and please always leave no trace

I recently visited Hole in the Rock at sunrise and it was an incredible experience. The sun was just starting to rise over the horizon, casting a golden glow over the desert landscape. The hole in the rock was perfectly framed by the rising sun, and it was truly a sight to behold. There were only a few other people at Hole in the Rock at sunrise, so I had the place to myself. The only other people were doing trail running at 90 degrees before it turned 115 later on in the day. I was able to hike to the top of the rock and take in the amazing views of the surrounding desert. It was a truly peaceful and serene experience. There a few spots near it but you can also park closer to the Zoo for access. The hike to the top of Hole in the Rock is short and easy, but it can be a bit steep in some places. The best time to visit Hole in the Rock is at sunrise or sunset. The light at these times of day is simply magical! If you're looking for a unique and unforgettable way to experience the beauty of the desert, I highly recommend visiting Hole in the Rock at sunrise. It's a truly magical place.

Drive to Hole in the Rock mere 15 minutes before sunset - should have come earlier if only to take it all in for longer. There are a few (free) parking lots along the road leading up to the "trail" head, and we parked at the closest one (surprisingly there was space so close to sunset). The walk up the path was very easy, I was just wearing regular sneakers. There are stone steps leading from the entrance of the hole down to the center, so easy to enter inside as well. From below it looked like there was a big crowd in there and we thought we wouldn't be able to go inside, but upon getting to the entrance we realized the space was bigger than it seemed and there was plenty of room for the 3 of us to find a spot. The further up into the crevasse you go the more slippery it got so we stayed near the middle which still gave us an amazing view as the sun quickly dipped below the horizon. The colors of the clouds were beautiful and changed from minute to minute. We stayed until dark. There's something lovely about a large group of strangers gathered together in an alcove in a rock to watch the sunset.

We were disappointed in this stop. If you're at or going to the zoo, this would be a quick stop to add to that outing, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go here. We had read about it from reviews and thought it was going to be amazing but we couldn't have been more disappointed. There's no way this is a .3 hike to it. The parking lot is maybe 100 feet from the rock and you walk up for a few minutes at most to get there. There are electric poles and lines overlooking the horizon that kind of block the overall beauty of the view. It's also very crowded because it's a popular sunrise spot. I guess everyone reads the reviews and goes, just like us. Well, don't go out of your way to go here. There are a lot of other hikes and views that would be way better choices. Yes, there's a hole in the rock, but really, that's all. Small kids might have fun running around but from the conversations heard going on around us, there seemed to be a lot of people who thought it'd be more than what it is. At least it was close to the airport as this was our last stop on our mini-vacation.
Such a gorgeous place not far at all from the city! We had just gotten off the plane, had breakfast, & wandered here. From the parking lot it appears the trail is more of a steep climb, but after asking folks that we're heading back to their car they informed us is slowly inclines and wraps around the back of the hole. I saw kids, elderly, & everyone in between, and some dogs all walking around with no issues. Just please bring water & stay hydrated! Once you get to the hole, you do have a little climbing (nothing strenuous) over a ledge and there are stairs to walk down on the other side to sit and enjoy the city & mountain views. The trails go for a bit and all seem to loop back to the lot. Really a beautiful surprise and worth the stop!

Awesome hike for just about anyone! You cannot miss coming here if you are in the Phoenix area. Hiking was a bit scary as we ascended and descended the Hole as it was steep near the top, but we were careful of how we placed our feet on the rocks and did not slip at all. I noticed that many others were confidently climbing in sandals and thongs. A relatively short climb. Nice views of the city and valley. You can see Phoenix and also the airport tower with planes approaching the airport to land. Bring your cameras for great photos. The trail was fairly busy on a Sunday late afternoon. We found parking in the closest lot although every space was full and many people were walking in from other nearby lots. Although the lots are small, we just waited a few minutes for someone to leave as people are always coming and going. Easy in and out, close to the freeways.
Great beginners hike. We did this with 6 kids, ages 1-10, as a cut your teeth experience for the walkers and 5 adults. Everyone had fun. It was easy enough that Grandma and Grandpa could come and the 2yr old could keep up, and had enough rock climbing that the older kids felt challenged. I will be returning with my brood.

Dog-friendliness
Great trail for dogs. The rock climbing at the end may be too slick for some owners' comfort. Please keep your dog on a leash.
Hole in the Rock is THE place in town to view the sunset over the mountains. I heard about this location on a podcast about what to see and do in Phoenix. We arrived maybe 30 minutes before sunset and we were lucky to find a parking spot. Parking is free and there are restrooms right outside the lot. I didn't even realize this was a hiking destination, as it's more of a brief walk and trek up to the hole itself. The hole is at the top of a sandstone rock formation that's been affected by erosion. If you want an elevated view, wear shoes with good grip. As it's in town, there's a lot of city views. We saw maybe six plans flying in or out during sunset and all the traffic down below. The colors were gorgeous.

This attraction was fairly busy and looked daunting from the front. However, there is a trail around either side. There are steps that lead up the path, and some cool photo points. There is also a flat ledge in the hole, so it’s not as steep as it looks. This would be an awesome place to view the sunset but I believe the park closes right around sunset. We stayed about an hour.

A must see if you visit Phoenix! Very easy hike (the closer you park the shorter you'll have to hike) with a very unique rock formation at the top and a lovely view! Hole in the Rock has been on the *to visit list* for a while and I'm glad we stopped here on our recent trip. The actual formation is stunning and amazing to look at the cave like structure. If you geocache, this is also an earth ache as well!
Restrooms
Multiple restrooms on site. I didn't use them so I can't speak to the cleanliness but they are there for use if needed!
Dog-friendliness
The entire area is very dog friendly with a short hike and places to hang out and relax.
Picnic area
Lots of picnic tables all around the area.
Can’t be a tourist in AZ and not climb a rock formation. This is obligatory and just convenient enough to snap a few good pics. Hard to get a good pic without others in the shot though. Some folks are so rude, especially teenaged boys soccer teams (too specific). Be careful if allergic to bees. There was a caution sign. There is also a Humpty Dumpty level of danger involved.

Very nice place at papago Park right next to the phonix zoo, the trail to reach the hole isnt too difficult although can be challenging for older people, and it can also be a but dangerous as people do slip, but the view from the hole is beautiful especially during sunsets and sunrises

I did not see a playground

You'll see a bunch of dogs in the park and going up to the hole in the rock ready for belly rubs and vibes

Many places for picnics and a couple barbecue grills
The Hole in the Rock is located several minutes away from the airport. We flew in the morning, took a car and climbed early on Saturday. The walk took us about 15 mins from the parking lot. In the hole there were a least 20+ people. As this is one of the popular attractions in Phoenix, I highly recommend to start off before 6am. The view is great and you will take best shots when there is less or no people.

An amazing experience. Natural places that you have to visit before you die. Wind, basalt and big rock makes this place archisuper energy provider. When you touch the walls you can feel the magnetism and energy. You do not need to smoke anything to breathe this environment. Besides I did it while 111 Fahrenheit in Tempe. You can climb up to the cave/portal in less than ten minutes and see an excellent panoramic view. Come on and enjoy a fabulous landmark. Do not forget to give a Like,if this was helpful.!

Must see while in the Phoenix area. Not that far of a drive and a decent amount of free parking. Located in Papago Park which has lots to see. It's an easy walk up the back to get to the hole, about 15 minutes. Steps are carved in the stone to make it easier. Lots of kids on the trail. View is great from the top and the hole makes for great photos. Probably won't spend more than 30 minutes hear unless you check out the surrounding attractions (zoo, botanical gardens, fishing hole).
It's a different place. It is spectacular to be able to see the sunset from the top of the mountain. I loved getting there. I couldn't see it from the beginning but the ending was spectacular. a beautiful experience that the universe gives us. Don't forget to visit it.

Very easy walk from the parking lot. You can walk around the rock from either side and get to the hole from an entrance on the back. There are plenty of nooks and crannys to explore around the entire rock. The kids loved all the small bouldering to do and the dog loved racing the kids up the small climbs.

This is a great park. The hike is moderate only because it's not a lengthy climb. The views are well worth the effort. This is not wheelchair accessible but the view even from the parking and picnic areas is stunning. Saw several families with young kids make the climb just fine. I'm disappointed that some idiots have chosen to desecrate the rock by sticking their gum on it. Shame on you! Respect the beauty of nature so you preserve it for others to enjoy too!
Passed by here while driving to Colorado and it was very interesting. I was notnon my workout shoes or clothes but the rock is easy to climb to. The view from the hole is beautiful too - vast Arizona desert with green patches or cactus anf brushes. The dirt road from the highway is not that bad, its smooth and a sedan can drive through it. Parking lot is just beside the rock.
Picnic area
there are a couple of tables and benches near the parking lot

Very interesting geology. Well worth a visit. Children who are with responsible adults would love it. There are two paths to get up to the Hole in the Rock. If you go…you pass a few parking lots until you get to the lot closet to the trails. If its full just keep driving a bit further and you will find more parking by restrooms. (I would only use them if you really need to, not very clean)

This place is one of the many beautiful sights we seen in the phoenix Area. The trail was easy to walk and I definitely came unprepared. Parking was scarce and there were a lot of people. Up toward the top, the rock was very slippy so be careful with your footing. You can get some beautiful views from here I'm sure. I could have sat up there for hours was looking around.
Be prepared for a moderate climb. It was a bit crowded with people taking their IG photos and you’ll want water for the hot days! Easy access and parking (all free)

One of my favorite places in Arizona! A historical Site, right next to the Phoenix zoo. It’s only a 10 mins hike going up and the pictures are breathtaking with beautiful views. They also have a beautiful pond with ducks that you can hang out and take pics. Overall, it’s a great place to visit with family and friends. Catch the beautiful sunset.
Excellent place to visit when traveling in Arizona. Make sure you check times before you plan your visit. The parking lot nearby can get congested. There are several parking lots in the park and trails to them. This is definitely a photo opportunity. It is enjoyable and relaxing if you like to hike. This is an easy hike even for a beginner.
Very beautiful view of the Phoenix Zoo, Papago Park, and the surrounding metro area. I have seen family photos and birthday parties take place inside the Holee in the Rock. It takes us about 10 minutes from the parking lot to the viewpoint. Very close to the Desert Botanical Garden, trails, restroom areas, and covered picnic areas. More
Fairly easy and short hike (this is coming from inexperienced hikers) to the top. A few things to consider: there is plenty of parking available, no fee, no restrooms/outhouses, and dog friendly. We didn’t see any water stations so make sure to stay hydrated and take enough water.

I enjoyed Hole in the Rock but I would love to be there when the sunset is. Only thing is I don't know where to park in that area for to be there for sunset without the risk of getting locked/closed in. If anyone has information on how to be there for sunset without getting closed in let me know. More
Hole in the rock is about 10 minutes from the parking lot, it’s super cool, glad we did it and we also kept hiking. It was a good day to get some vitamin D, and because we were so close to the zoo and botanical gardens. We’ve just popped over to the botanical gardens. I WOULD RECOMMEND
Just go! There's parking and make sure you have hiking shoes just to be comfortable. You climb up just about 5 mins to see the "hole in the rock" it gets crowded during sunset so keep that in mind. Most people usually take pictures and leave. A few just hang out at the top of the hill
What a cool experience. The rock is easily accessible by car. There’s a parking lot nearby, in fact, parking lot is the view you got once you reached the top. There are stairs going all the way up. It’s probably best seen on sunset, but sunset is also the most crowded time of the day.
Amazing views! Perfect spot for a romantic sunset. The hike is 5 minutes from the parking lot. *We love coming here. The views are always spectacular, and the colors are always different.

They should call this a walk, not a hike - it takes 4 minutes to reach the top. It’s beautiful at sunrise! Arizona gives Golden Hour a whole new meaning. Come see the hole but wow! Pick up your trash!!! It was crazy to see how much trash people left behind.
This stop was an unexpected surprise. We decided to walk up and catch the sunset one evening. Beautiful view of the city of Phoenix -away from it all. It was a bit crowded when we went but there seemed to be enough space for everyone to enjoy the views!
Is located right next to the Zoo. Short walk up , easy parking, beautiful views of the city and Papago Park. It does little crowded but everyone is really nice. If crowds is not your thing the park is full of walking trails and beautiful picnic areas.

We got to go see the hole in the rock trail today. Is was a lot of fun a little cowed but it’s a very easy hike so a lot of people can do it. It has some amazing views and is a very good place to just sit and take it all in. It was very enjoyable.
Fun, family friendly activity! Make sure to explore all around Papago Park, the Desert Botanical Garden and Hoke in the rock. Make a day of it! Pack food or eat at Gertrude's! (We packed food, so I am not sure how Gertrude's is but it looked busy)
Very cool geological formation. Was a bit crowded and busy with tourists in the popular hole area so not many pictures could be taken. Good views of surrounding phoenix, but other peaks have better views in close proximity.

This is the quick go to for anyone who can appreciate one of the best views in Arizona for free. I take all my friends to this place and they take their favorite pictures. This place does get packed before sunset so get there a bit early.
Our family did the short, easy hiking trail to the overlook, and it was one of the highlights of our Phoenix visit. There are excellent views of the mountains and valley. Visitors were polite in taking turns getting their selfies and
A very scenic and easy hike up, but it is often overcrowded. The trails around it are great for mountain biking and OneWheels. On the north side of the mountain is an outdoor amphitheater that is perfect if you’d like to run steps.
Very busy during a weekend sunset. Tons of people were swarming to the rock but it was still cool. My wife and I brought dinner and sat to enjoy a red sunset as planes landed into the airport along with a great view of the moon.
Views for sunset were amazing. A lot of people were there though. A short hike to climb the back of the rock, I definitely recommend wearing tennis/hiking shoes. Some places were slippery and people with sandals were struggling.
Very easy, short hike up to The Hole In The Rock. We went for sunset so the crowds were insane. Would recommend getting there earlier if you're wanting to watch the sunset so you can get a good spot. Parking wasn't an issue.
Super cool attractions. I would recommend coming before 9:00am. As it get extremely crowded. I came on a weekday around 8am and it was pretty empty. We left around 9am and it was starting to get extremely crowded. More
Fun place to visit. Simple walk to the hole in the rock and lots of places to venture into. Tons of people there so maybe go in the early morning instead of late afternoon if you don't like crowds. Very pretty views!!
Easy hike with great spot (the hole) near top to take a minute and take in a great view of the valley. I've done this hike w my 75 year old MA and my 7 year old nephew and both loved it. Good photo opp too.
Our first visit was great! Easy hike up the rocky hill. We came in March at sunset and luckily got there early for a good “seat” to watch the sunset. It got super crowded but it was a beautiful experience!
This would be a great place to visit and take photos if everyone who shows up, takes turns and allows others the ability to take a photo without them or their kids popping in and out to ruin your picture.
I loved it. Awesome place to visit. Great views. A short hike up the mountain to the hole. Then you have stairs that’s very helpful going to the other side. It’s definitely worth a trip. Very relaxing.
