My father had the worst experience at MGH. It all started on the Respiratory 9th floor. First incident was when the nurse brought my father’s med and she drops it on the floor. She picked up the pill and she was about to give that to my father from the dirty floor. I asked her about that dirty pill from the floor when she was approaching my father to give it to him what she was doing and her reply was it is a 10 second policy to pick it up and she can still give it to the patient. Never in my life I heard something absurd like giving a sick man a pill from a dirty hospital floor. Second incident was the PSA worker when my father asked for water he never received it because he didn’t say please. She said to my father what should he say when he asks for water. I agree the right way is to ask politely but the man is sick! No compassion at all. I believe a care worker should look past an elderly person and give them what they want. It is the right thing to do when someone is sick especially when they are in a hospital struggling. The third incident was when my father was transported to another room, he asked a nurse to call me because he was worried I would not know where he was when I visit him. Not even a courtesy call. The sad part when I arrived to see my father the next day, the first thing I saw was a big machine in the room where my father was in. I walked in worrying something happened and it was a lady who I think was hooked up to this machine. The last incident was when my father had to go to the bathroom. He asked for help to go and he could have walked there with help. My father had to do a number 2 and her reply to my dad was do it in the diaper and she will come back to clean him. That’s not what my father wanted but he ended doing it in the diaper and the nurse who said she would come back, didn’t! My father slept the whole night in his fecal. The nurse then changed shifts and the other nurse cleaned my father after so many hours sleeping in it. Before that I called patient relations and told the lady who works in that department about the first incident but from the first to the fourth incident sadly in the end nothing was done. The patient relations lady told me that they hardly get complaints.I leave you the reader to think about something when having a loved one in this hospital. On that floor a few patients I came across did complain to me and sadly no family member was there to advocate for them. I saw with my own eyes the elderly I talked to were neglected. Read the reviews and remember if you love your father, mother or any person in the hospital, make sure you visit often and make your voice is heard if anything happens because I advocated for my father and he is out of there and now in a better caring place. For the nurses who neglect the vulnerable I wonder if it was their parents would they still give a dropped pill on the floor to them, would they not give them water because they didn’t say please or would they be upset if they didn’t get a call to let them know there parents moved to another room and last would they like to hear from there parents that they slept in their own fecal the whole night! My father worked very hard in his life and with all his tax dollars over the years, you would think he would get proper caring from professional people. The system has failed not only my dad but the few I spoke too.

It's a great hospital if you come prepared! Bring things to keep yourself occupied and comfortable. Expect to have to wait for many hours if you don't have an immediate life threatening issue. The emergency department areas are sparse and can get hectic. But most importantly the staff are all amazing and do the best they can with dated resources in a crowded area. They are tired and stressed because it's a rough job, but they really want to help everyone, so try to be polite and respectful and follow their directions. The biggest issue are other patients who are rude and demanding. The staff tries their best to accommodate everyone fairly. You get service in order of most life threatening, as it should be. It doesn't matter if you have been wanting longer, someone with a worse problem will go first. But it seems there is always at least one person who only has a small issue and expects to jump ahead of the order by being loud and in the way. They don't allow those people to jump ahead no matter what, so those demanding patients are just slowing everything down for everyone. The overnight hospital rooms are newly renovated, clean, and very comfortable! The staff are amazing there too, though they are stretched, so expect to also have to wait for things sometimes. There are lots of great services available for patients, if you ask for them. For example, there is a lovely pet service that will bring a therapy dog by on Thursday who will cuddle up to you and make you feel happier for a little while. You just have to ask for it ahead of time. There is no in-room TV, the TV is in the patients lounge. The rooms have modern medical equipment, and very comfortable beds with electric adjustments. But otherwise they only include the bare basics. Remember, it is not a hotel. So again come prepared, or ask someone you know to bring you things, and you will have a nice place to receive care and recover. Tip: Having your own pillow from home helps a lot. Overall I felt very well taken care of during my times here, and would immediately choose to come back to this hospital the next time I am extremely unwell.

My 88 year old mother broke her leg and had a minor heart attack in mid-December. Her 3 day experience in Emergency was like war time care. It was post apocalyptic. Her first doctor misread her x-ray report as being fracture free, and so she was transferred to gurneys for heart tests and had her diapers changed on the regular with no leg brace, leaving her in constant excruciating pain for a week. When they finally re-imaged her leg and found the fracture, thus realizing the doctor's errror, she was traumatized and set back in her healing. Now my Mum has been lying in bed staring at the bathroom door for going on a month. No stimulus, no TV. She is not comfortable with a laptop (I suppose they assume everyone has one). The nurses and PSW's are understaffed and tired. A doctor (they rotate weekly) pops in once a week or so with little or no info. My Mum is getting very depressed. We visit her for hours every day but still the time weighs heavy, and they won't transfer her to rehab until she can bear weight on that leg. That leg gets weaker every day. My Mum's physio happens maybe 3 times a week, and consists of her being transferred to a wheelchair and left for an hour. The physio department extension has no voice message or voicemail, so it's hard to catch up with them so I can determine my Mum's physio schedule and be there to get her off of her floor to people watch in the lobby and get Tim Hortons or something. This stimulus is key to her recovery. In the meantime we've been informed that the convalescent care place we're waiting for her to be transferred to may never have a bed for my Mum. This makes Michael Garron her convalescent care. Lord help us all. How will she ever get to rehab? In the meantime she's hanging in but becoming increasingly fragile. It feels helpless for all of us.

I’ve received the most incompetent health service in my life. Considering how basic my problems were, I feel terrible for people with more complicated ones. I went in with a fever and a sore throat. The wait room was unreasonably cold considering it wasn’t even hot outside. After 5 hours, they just said that it’s COVİD ignoring my statements regarding the negative test results that I got before going to the hospital. I couldn’t believe when they told me to get some Tylenol and sent me home. I specifically asked what my options were to detect other viruses or bacterias and not only COVID which both the doctor and the nurse slurred over. With a 39 degrees of fever shaking in a cold wait room so long, I could only pursue to get an answer to this question with 3 failed attempts because I’ve ran out of patience, as if they don’t even care what I have to say, I was super respectful and direct too.. I had to wait over 5 hours for a PCR test and an advise to buy Tylenol. I wasn’t properly examined, no blood samples etc were taken, and my sore throat on day 5 is getting worse, making it harder even just to talk, it’s now spread all over my throat. Oh by the way, they’ve posted my PCR results, NEGATIVE :) !!! It’s a fact that they are really friendly and kind and I appreciate that! But isn’t that being a decent human? It doesn’t change the fact that I’m still suffering and entrusting my health to an institution is far more important than that, which I don’t intend to do again.

Michael Garron Hospital, formerly Toronto East General Hospital founded in 1929 and located in the East of Toronto in Ontario, has been proudly serving the community of East Toronto since 1929. Over the years the hospital has continued renewing its commitment and version and today Michael Garron Hospital is a full-service and large community teaching hospital with over 500 beds, and providing comprehensive patient care to a diverse population of more than 400,000 people living in its corresponding area! As a community teaching hospital, MGH is affiliated with the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, the University of Toronto Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing and other educational institutions. MGH is a designated Paediatric Centre for south-east Toronto for maternal, newborn and paediatric care and a partner hospital in the Child Health Network of the Greater Toronto area. Approximately 3,500 babies are delivered annually at the hospital's Maternal Newborn and Child Health Centre! Although the patient waiting time and some other staff training are needed to be addressed and improved, thankfully, MGH has been working very hard with the provincial government to provide the best patient care for the people they care about as they could! Thank you is really needed for their efforts and hard work!

A recent 3 day visit to this hospital for a surgery of a family member renewed my respect and appreciation in Canada Health system. A great team of doctors, nurses, support staff and volunteers provided an A1 service efficiently, professionally and with care using complex and up to date medical and IT equipment. The team included senior and younger staff from Canada and new comers to provide care for patients that have not visited the hospital by choice. The hospital offered a super clean place even during renovation. The Kitchen staff would not get a Michelin star rating but they got a 5 star from me for quality, reliability and service. Even the underground parking was safe, clean, well lit and with reasonable prices. Well done team MG. I know that such a performance takes a lot of work behind the surface. A refreshing experience that proves that dedicated, experienced and “real” people, not money and politicians, make all the difference. Sorry for the long winded review, but a big thank you. Keep up the good work.

If I could rate this a zero I would. This has to be the worst hospital in this whole city. It should be shut down. The lack of care is disgusting! I know the nurses are overworked but to be rude and mean to the patients is unacceptable. I live in the neighborhood so sadly this is the hospital I'm stuck with whenever there is an issue. 30 years ago it was a good place but it has gone way downhill and is only getting worse. My mother has a broken hip and isn't ready to leave but yet they're kicking her out because they want the bed, and she has Covid but they don't care, she's been there a month and they feel she's ready to go home. It may be free healthcare but that doesn't mean it's good. If you can, beg and plead the ambulance drivers not to send you there ask to be sent to a different hospital because you'll get treated like garbage here if you get treated at all. It's a disgraceful place and I feel for anyone that has to be stuck in here. I love all these fake reviews saying they're great. What a joke!

Aside from the construction and lack of visible wayfinding. My elderly Father was admitted nearly a week ago and no Dr or Nurse has contacted me. I have gone to the hospital every 2nd day and wait up to 3 hrs for a Dr to come speak to me, and no one comes. I have asked that they at least phone me. No call. When I arrived the 3rd night he was there he was eating solid food, but he aspirates on solid food, chokes and passes out. He was on pureed food at St. Michael's Hospital and Providence rehab, which he was in for the 3 weeks leading up to him being re-admitted to hospital and taken to Michael Garron. Why this information wasn't shared with the hospital is beyond me. I understand that hospitals are understaffed, but how a 91 year old can be under their care and the POA is not notified of anything in 6 days is unacceptable. We were told by Providence that maybe it was his heart, and at the hospital, the Nurse I did get a few minutes with said he fell at Providence. Dumbfounded, and upset.

I went to ER on Boxing Day with flu, fever, dehydration and infections. I did wait a few hours before I was treated but have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised at the level of service and the care I received. I thought that the two doctors were pleasant, extremely thorough, and looking for a comprehensive solution. I was kept in and treated for an additional day. The entire nursing staff were very friendly and efficient...not at all grouchy or indifferent after a long day of being yelled at and abused by a lot of the patients. Actually, this experience was probably the best ER experience I have had in a number of hospitals in a number of cities. A shout out to the porters who pushed my around for two days without a complaint (and even with a joke or two, and to the many volunteer staff who were as helpful and friendly as possible. I don't generally like hospital visits, especially to the ER, but this one was the best. Thank you.

Canadian health system has completely failed. No one is in charge of controlling disrespectful hospital staff anymore. They are freely and without any fear, disrespect you, humiliate you, abuse you, and basically violates all your rights. Where is all our paid taxes have gone to? To the garbage bin? We need them back now. We have not been paying taxes to receive this terrible service and for our rights to be violated. This type of attitude from Ontario's hospital staffs are not acceptable and must stop immediately. All reviews under any Ontario's hospitals clearly indicate this and those responsible for this mess must be removed from the hospital ASAP, tomorrow is late. There are so many experts are seeking for a job, remove the violators from hospitals and use those who are really deserved to have these jobs, those who really care!!!

I had a terrible experience at Michael Garron Hospital's emergency ward. I went in with severe upper abdominal pain, i waited for six hours for my blood test results , not a single nurse checked up on me. The pain escalated to the point where I had to leave and seek help elsewhere. It was one of the worst experiences of my life, roaming the city at night in immense pain. I wouldn't recommend their emergency services to anyone. The nurses EACH and EVERYONE doesn’t respect their career or people. It wasn’t only me all the people there waited for at least5-6 hours. Imagine being in such pain and trying to control your emotions. I wish the hospital management look into it ;( Never ever visit this hospital!!!

  • Ubie Jung

The nurse at the Emergency was incredibly rude and ignorant. I was looking for my father who was admitted there for health condition. The woman asked his name and I gave the info and waited for her to tell me where he is Instead, she fingered me to move around which I obliged. And then waited for her again. She continues to look at the monitor and ignored me. A nurse guy beside her asked me why I'm standing around. I almost lost it but suppressed my anger with great effort. Provided him the reason why I'm there and my father's name to find where he's been admitted to. I had to spend another 15min to finally locate my father.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS! This hospital and staff in the emergency deserve negative stars. Went in for uncontrollable pain in the abdomen. All they've done is take multiple tests (of the wrong area at that) over the span of 24 hrs. They haven't found out what's causing the pain, they've barely been able to locate it even though I've mentioned it to them numerous times. They gave me an appointment for a ct scan an began running extra tests. They've said they will release me and still haven't for over 12 hours. I've waited so long to find out what's causing me pain, that my pain disappeared.

  • Lucy Smith

Very caring staff! I had my surgery on January 8th and nurses Daniel, Anna, Lana + all other nursing staff in G6 area and the recovery room were SUPER caring, thoughtful and attentive. I had to stay in the recovery room for 6 hours for a second procedure and throughout that time I saw them show equal amount of care to all patients that went through the recovery room that day. Same goes for my amazing surgeon Dr Dale Sigesmund! Thank you for making us all feel safe and cared for when we were in a vulnerable state!

  • Karen Cohen

After seeing the hand surgeon I was directed to the hand therapy clinic to get a working and a resting brace. I came back at their request for a second visit. She was so negative about every option, stating that SHE felt I would like any of the braces that I finally just left. It was the most disheartening experience for someone that is very active and wants to remain so. I would prefer to remain in pain rather than look to this clinic for support. I don’t recommend this clinic to anyone.

  • Sarah Broomer

I’ve known multiple people who have gone to the ER here and been sent away with absolutely zero help (one of these people is currently bleeding profusely, has lost vision and can no longer feel his legs and he was discharged with no help and not even a Tylenol for the pain). This hospital is a disgusting joke full of incompetent people who have zero empathy for human suffering. You’d have better luck googling your symptoms and treating yourself than going to this joke of a “hospital”.

  • Mimi Leo

Stayed here for 4 days when my toddler had his first asthma attack. Every single staff member was so kind and reassuring. My son was understandably afraid of the oxygen masks & needles but the nurses comforted him through it. They even gave him a teddy, train pillow and “love box” filled with art supplies & supportive notes which helped him tremendously since he was bed ridden. They went above & beyond! I’m extremely grateful & this hospital would be my first choice.

  • Teresa Perri

One of the worst hospitals I’ve been to. Been in the emergency room several times because the doctors and nurses just didn’t care and sent me back home without doing any proper testing and medications and my condition got worse. Unfortunately this was the closest hospital. I was in severe pain and one nurse told me to relax and that I was fine..…. Are you kidding me? Absolutely disgusting. Avoid this hospital if you can please.

  • Michele Whyte

I have had nothing but positive experiences at this hospital, from the helpful volunteers to the efficient and conscientious admin. staff and the professional and personable specialists (Dr. J. Higgins and Dr. Kwan). The ER wait times are reasonable (e.g. an examination, x-ray and cast for a fractured wrist completed in two hours). My thanks to everyone at MGH for their patience and caring as well as their exemplary practices.

  • Samantha W

Used the online booking system to book a next day appointment for minor ER emergencies after a fall. Was checked in, triaged, x-rayed and treated by a doctor in under two hours. Every employee I encountered was patient and kind and treated me with care. I really hope they keep the online booking system for minor injuries as I do think it really cuts down on wait times for both minor and major ER visits.

  • Greg Devitt

There is lots of construction going in and around the hospital. Can be quite confusing to get around. Thankfully there's lots of volunteers to help you out. They wear purple vests so you know who they are. Pleased with the cleanliness compared to other hospitals. Just like anywhere it is hit and miss with all staff. Some great doctors and nurses, and then some brutal ones. Probably more good than bad.

Visit yesterday with my 34 week pregnant wife who had unbearable pain in her belly . They let us wait and told there is no ultra sound machine operator so you have to come in morning at 8am. We went in the morning they did the ultra sound and let us wait again till 2pm. No doctor were available horrible experience. Then we have to leave hospital without any checkup and look for other options.

Just had a hip replacement, and everyone at Michael Garron's hospital were amazing. It was a smooth day, everything went well. I wish I could remember all the names of nurses and doctors encountered. Everyone was kind, friendly, assuring and professional. My recovery/aftercare is going well too. Extremely happy with the results. Thank you Dr. Tsvetkov and team, you guys are AWESOME.

  • Take Aguess

Avoid this emergency department at all costs if possible. Worst service you can imagine. Empty waiting rooms yet hours of waiting while drs talk about their weekend with eachother. Absolutely the worst. And I should know, I’m accident prone If you do need to come here. Head down and don’t ask questions or these evil nurses will scorn you with eyes from hell

  • adrian Grosso

Whenever I have dealt with the staff and doctors at this hospital I have always felt completely at their mercy. Which is not something you should feel when seeking medical assistance. There are 2 types of people in the medical field, those in it to help people, and those in it for the money. Never have I been in an institution so one sided.

  • Anthony Gomes

The nurses at night are chatting among each other at 1 am while a patient is in pain . It’s happened in ER ( emergency room ) the patient waited for 3 hours while the doc and nurse were having a chat … wow doing great . Remember your salary comes from our taxes. Nurses smokes on a non smoking area … just wow Canada’s health care

  • Dianna English

We had to go into the ER late on a Sunday evening. Staff was so kind. Every person we met was helpful. They saw us and got us back home again remarkably fast. They also had really transparent wait times with screens keeping people updated so we weren’t stuck wondering with no idea. Overall so grateful this is our nearest ER!

I have multiple positive experiences at this hospital in both the emergency department for both adults and kids and within the nicu. I personally found the staff to be compassionate and professional. The building is quite outdated however they are currently renovating.

Please be careful and take a look deeper into the history of Kevin Ly (a nurse at this hospital). He has been charged by police in past for inappropriate activity with minors. He also has a history of being unprofessional in a hospital setting.

Understandably busy on Friday due to long weekend eve. Yet, the team was helpful, calm and professional. Unlike what I had heard, it was not 5-10 hours wait. Waited for nurse- 10 minutes. Waited for the doctor 1 hour. Waited for CT scan 15

Do not use pitocin for induction. If you want your child to be healthy and alive, you’re better off doing a C-section if you don’t deliver on time and it’s an emergency. The nurses will tell you “pitocin it’s safe”.

In the interest of patient families, patients, and the hospital, having a qualified and professional nurse is impotant.
