The sad truth about new seasons is that it is no longer any of the things that it purports to be or that it was. It's gone through two rounds of refunding and now is owned by a large foreign corporation. I'd say about 7 years ago their prices went stratospheric and now you're always going to pay 30% more than anywhere else for the same thing. There's no guarantee that what they are selling you is more locavore or more sustainable than another place. But the one thing you can be sure of is that you will pay more here than any other place. I don't know what gives them the sense that they can charge this but it is definitely part of their business model. The other thing they have done over the years is continually cut back on every kind of loss leader they were offering until now, where everything fits into this gouging model. Their Hot Bar Food used to be great when they first opened and had a variety of offerings. But now they've decided that all most people really want is mac and cheese, steamed mixed vegetables and baked chicken. The main thing this store really caters to are people with sensitive stomachs or digestive issues or extreme allergies to different types of food. They are excellent about being meticulous in identifying what's in each thing and providing that information to customers. Most of their food is now prepared in a central kitchen so it arrives less crisp. They have used the law of averages to spice everything so most things arrive bland. Very bland. Foody people I know call this place "no seasons." The high prices have also killed the vibe. You will not see a lot of happy younger people in this place.
While waiting in line before the register I was staring at a set of shelves. I was struck by how organized and clean they were. I was so struck in fact that I began to think inwardly about my own life, values and choices I've made. I began to realize that I am unorganized and completely disordered. For the first time in my life my eyes were open. I began to cry and a worker came and cheered me up. We began chatting and I began to feel a strong connection to her. We got coffee the next day and fell in love. We decided to move to the coast of spain. We caught fish every day and danced on the white sand dunes around a fire with our friends. Our beautiful children played professional soccer and there is never a dull moment without laughter. One day a large rogue wave crashed upon our house though and I woke up and realized I was still in New Seasons on Williams Ave. While my fantasy was over I was relieved I awoke in such a warm and comfortable shop. So thank you New Seasons, thank you for Spain, thank you for John, Katie, and Eric, thank you for the songs we sang, thank you for the love we shared, and most of all, thank you for keeping that shelf clean.
I come to New Seasons often and normally have an excellent experience. Today was the exception... Customer service was absolutely stellar and beyond what I thought a grocer would do..... They listened to me. The hot food bar while normally very good was a little off. I mentioned this to the cashier who offered an apology. She went a step further and took time to grant me a gift card just over the amount I spent. I was happy to buy the food, no matter the hot food bar condition, and still eat it, and tasty it was. Taking the time to listen and then respond with such thoughtfulness shows me an organization that cares about customers, community and the best possible outcomes for everyone. Thank you Albina New Seasons. #customerforlife
I went to pick up three sandwiches for myself and two employees for lunch and I was lucky enough to have Rex prepare our sandwiches. He listened to a couple of the things that my employees wanted on there sandwiches and he was quick to accommodate, with a smile in fact. It's rare in this day and age to receive personal, attentive, quality customer service. Oh I should also mention that when I asked for olive oil on my arugula he said I have to run to the back room to get it and I'll be right back. By golly he ran and he was right back! No strolling and chatting with other employees like I've had happen @ other establishments. I suggest you look for Rex next time you go for a custom-made, sandwich to go.
This is sad. I used to love to come here. But I guess due to social pressure this store is becoming a refuge for the local homeless.the odor in the cafeteria was overwhelming from the two homeless people there. I felt sorry for the little cleaning girl who was trying to keep the area clean. I get it, it’s not their fault they’re homeless. But this store charges a premium. The odor stuck to my clothes. My wife noticed when I came home. She said last time she was there she couldn’t even use the bathroom as it was occupied by two homeless persons. Please use a little common sense. I guess I’ll try whole paycheck or Fred’s.
Local grocery chain that is simply awesome. Somewhat like a Whole Foods Market, it carries a wide selection of esoteric and organic foods. This is probably my favorite grocery chain in the Portland area. It is considered so good that local real estate listings will mention if there is a New Seasons nearby. Pricey, and unfortunately there's no Amazon overlord to keep prices in check. But still worth it. Update - Star downgrade watch: The service at the Williams Street location is not as pleasant as at the other New Seasons locations I've been to. If it continues to suffer, I will need to deduct a star.
I was in the Williams St area with time to kill, so I decided to visit this New Seasons. My usual NS store is Happy Valley.... The Wms store seems larger as I found products not available in HV. Check out was a bit slower, but efficient & the checker was pleasant. Employees were friendly & happily answered questions. Store was very clean; it's the N S way... parking is more limited at Wms St store though. One of the things I loved was the diversity of the staff & customers. Before moving to Oregon I lived in an ethnically diverse area ... that felt good & welcoming. When in the area, I'll he back!
This New Seasons is great! It's not largest and therefore doesn't have the most offerings but I would say the employees are the most sincerely helpful and really come together as a team when a customer needs help, in any way. The checkout process can be a bit time consuming but again, the cashiers at this New Seasons are my favorite as well. Parking can sometimes be a hassle but with the extra spaces available at the building just south of the store, I've never not been able to find somewhere off the street to park. The bioswells are a wonderful addition as well as ample bike parking.
This review is primarily about their bakery, but also inhouse prepared foods. They sucks and the stuff they sell is crazy overpriced for the quality you get. They pastries are on the same level of 7/11 except twice as expensive. I do not understand why the local Portland audience is so excited about supporting this chain because I have found their overall store products especially the ones made in house are insanely priced and of mediocre quality. I find the same products at Fred Meyers for half the price. So why people flock there to pay more is beyond me.
I used to love this store and have been shopping here nearly daily since it opened close to my home. However, the prices are getting really outrageous and the store culture has been changing for the worse since it’s no longer locally owned. I’m learning that I can buy some of my favorite items elsewhere for literally half the price. And the self check out is really hit or miss. Yesterday I went to two different machines and neither of them worked. What happened to the friendly neighborhood express line? I am now a happy member of the Alberta Co-op.
Very clean store. Shelves are packed. Did not get greeted by any associates and passed by at least 3 employees who never asked if I needed anything hence my 4 stars. Cashier was nice. Very clean store. Shelves packed full. Deli area with a great variety of sandwiches. Their macaroni and cheese is pretty good. A definite 7 out of 10. The expectation here is if you can't find something find an employee and ask and that's when the magic of customer service begins. With so many on the floor a simple ask would go a long way. Hot food is fresh.
Had one of the best shopping experiences for a super market here. I know, that is an odd thing to say. But my wife and I were checking out and she was commenting that the Missionary Chocolates (on display near the register) were amazing and some of her favorites. The checker overheard our conversation and grabbed on of the boxes and let me try one for free. What amazing service! The people are incredibly nice, the food is the highest quality around, worth the slight increase in cost over other super markets. What a great store!
One of my favorite New Seasons is this one. First, I love how NSM has a combination of conventional and organic products. I come here almost daily and eat from the hot bar often. The food at the hot bar is always delicious, high quality, and fairly priced. Also, the floral section of NSM is actually fantastic. They can build you any bouquet of high quality flowers for a fraction of the cost at a florist shop. Friendly employees, offer free tastings, and occasionally will let you have that cup of coffee on the house.
New Seasons is a fantastic grocery store with a great selection of items. While some products can be on the pricier side, they often go on sale, making it easy to score some great deals. The store's commitment to sourcing high-quality, local, and organic products is admirable and appreciated by many customers. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the store is always clean and well-organized. Overall, New Seasons is a top-notch grocery store that is definitely worth checking out.
It's probably the best grocery store in Portland. I wish they prioritized local grown products more; they already do but I don't think it's like on your face labels. I think we need substantially conspicuous labels for locally grown and made products that have the lowest natural resources toll on them (aka carbon footprint in a rudimentary analysis). Nice place! A little expensive, but they have a good collection. Also, they have prepared foods that you can purchase and eat there.
Pretty great shop - has more of the regular items I’ve learned to expect from a New Seasons. Apparently this can be more dictated by zip code then by the grocer’s standards. The location is nice and easy, similar to the NW store with two entrances so that it easy while being in the center of a residential /business area. Parking, bike access and bus are right there on either side of the store. I find the meat counter at this store to be superb every time.
Great quality items for the most part, unfortunately I was implied to be a thief after going to switch for a less full of the same item. The cashier then repeated word for word the first thing he said but slower. The only reason I could grasp is that they think I am taking tags of frozen meat products, or I’m dumb. Very easy to tell the the Assistant Manager plans to do nothing but mention it to his cashier. Will be talking to the store manger.
Price gougers and Union busters. Wanna pay $7 for the same can of soup you can get at the Safeway that's one mile away for less than half the price ? Youve come to the right place! As far as i can tell they're certainly the best grocer.. when it comes to removing homeless people from their premises most efficiently! can't scare away the NIMBYs or else their store would go bankrupt overnight hahah. absolute parasite on the community
Out-of-stock conditions. Unattentive employees who block aisles and don't offer help (while chatting amongst themselves). Poor quality grab and go products. I used to love this store, but have had several rough experiences after returning to this neighborhood. I actually prefer the Broadway Safeway for in-stock conditions and quality of own-brand products to this New Seasons. And that's saying a lot. Won't return any time soon.
I really like this New Seasons Market because the quality is top notch and some of the product selection you just can't find anywhere else. Local? Yes. International? Yes. They have a lot of good stuff. Granted, some of it is outrageously priced, but its still fun to shop nonetheless. You can spend an hour or so just exploring and seeing what all they have, and at the end you'll have most certainly found some new things to try.
It is worth stopping by here if only to grab lunch and samples. They have wonderful customer service, great fresh produce selection, and always a great selection for meals as well. I used to work near here and would stop by for a fast, delicious lunch. Their weekend events are also worth coming in for; I've won t-shirts and a beer glass and tried every type of citris they have in their tastings. Lots of fun.
This is a smaller location and has a tight parking lot that can be hard to enter and exit. The pricing is similar to other New Seasons Markets; expensive, but worth it for some of the specialty items. I would not recommend doing all of your shopping here unless money is plentiful and you live within walking distance. It is a good place to grab a quick bite as it has good and healthy options for take out.
New seasons is my favorite grocery store in town, feeling more like a friendly neighborhood coop than a grocery chain. The staff at this branch is extremely friendly, personable and helpful. There's always a great selection of fresh, local produce and organic foods. This new seasons also has a small seating area with a cafe, not a bad spot to have lunch at the fresh salad bar and work from your laptop.
Awesome place to get flowers wine and whole cooked roasted chicken all for 30$. I cut cooked chicken in four pieces rub some butter on top and put it in hot oven to give it brown sizzling In hindsight it would go great with mashed potatoes and gravy Well maybe next time Great choice of exotic beers and drinks from Japan Cakes and cookies and bread are awesome over here baked daily
The store has slowly been removing vegan options. All of the new seasons locations got rid of their bagel and sandwich bars (bummer), but at this one the only grab and go sandwiches are meat options. Now they don’t have the vegan burritos, either as somebody who lives and works in the area, this is where I used to get most of my food & these changes sadden & inconvenience me.
Went in looking for something specific, which they didn't have. Which is fine, because I did come home with a slice of the banana cake. You need to let it warm to room temp though...it doesn't have the ideal flavor and texture when it's still cold. I can't wait to bake some ginger molasses cookies though. The ready to bake dough sounded so good. Hope the family agrees.
New Seasons is my favorite market and this particular location is no exception! The staff here are all super friendly and the prices are fair. I am especially happy about their organic produce prices. They have a good grab and go selection of foods and a great salad and soup bar, also many kombucha selections. I don't think there's anything I dislike about this place.
Nice little neighborhood market. Helpful staff, friendly clerks and lovely flowers. Bakery looked attractive, so much so that I picked up a couple of Marion berry hand pies which were delicious and not too sweet. They mailed out a $5 coupon which was helpful in getting me there... good job guys! If I didn't live in California, I would definitely return.
They really care about you as a customer. From the meat dept to the produce to the deli to the bakery...I am treated with the utmost respect and courtesy. Sometimes they go beyond the call of duty to make your shopping experience meaningful. I love the friendliness and personal attention I receive with each shopping experience.
Felicity, in the ‘Ready to Eat’ department is the absolute worst. Every single time. They are a true disgrace to their slogan, “Friendliest store in town”. Good thing that department has (I don’t know her name) because her “name tag popped off”, because she is amazing! (Will edit this review if I catch her name in the future.)
I get followed around by employees every time I come into this store (one guy in particular). And they aren’t subtle about it. I don’t understand. I come in near daily and I clearly pay for my items. I’ll never spend money here again. They treat me like a thief. Overpriced. I wish they would leave this neighborhood
A good place to shop although like everything else in Portland, a bit overpriced. The prepared food is excellent. You can find healthy or not so healthy grocery options. It's a place for everyone. I would give it a five star if they allowed me to drink the beer I buy from them while eating my food on the property.
I loved shopping here. I was assisted by Nathan in cheese/deli and Tersa. They were both very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. The amazing lady Shaun that checked us out was new but it would be hard for you to notice it. She was very friendly and personable. I am excited to come back again soon. Thank you!
This is my favorite local grocery chain. This location does have a smaller meat counter than some others. Still plenty if good food. Though the price is higher than the national chains, you get what you pay for. If you are getting staples (such as mayo, ketchup, etc) it may be worth passing on these here.
I like New Seasons when I want to do the right thing for myself with "better" food (organic and the like) and my wallet is not an issue. The produce is great and there may be items you won't find elsewhere, and that goes for the rest of the store. All in all, lots of good food and I do like the store.
I love this store---been eating there off and on for about 8 years---but unlike many other NS stores, they don't carry the SKEPTIC, so I can't give it give stars. Nonetheless, they have a good yogurt selection (meaning not just the trendy and sugary type yogurts but several of the real ones as well).
Great selection of merchandise and product. Very clean and friendly staff. I'd forgotten how well their meat and seafood selection is. Great cheeses to choose from and bakery offerings. A bit pricey for everyday shopping, but if you're looking for something for a special occasion, this is the place
Friendly service (haven't encountered any snobby attitudes here!), wide variety of goods, and a great deli/grill/salad area for a quick bite. Sandwich, soup, and breakfast options are tasty. Haven't had an opportunity to try their pizza yet, but judging by their other options I look forward to it!
Service is always great from a very happy crew. It's early evening and people have stocked up in preparation of a 7 to 10 day winter storm with freezing temps, snow and ice tonight. The shelves were empty of abundant items, but not yet out of stock from what I could see, except in produce.
Snobby and rude employees. Two cashiers on Saturday morning talking down about the customers that just paid for their items and left before me. Real classy. Prices are high on items you can buy much cheaper anywhere else. Why do people shop here..? I for one will not be returning!
By far this is my favorite New seasons. Its bigger and nicer, people are nice and I line that the bathrooms are not gender neutral like the other one. Just because multiple people can go inside at once. Love their samples and their soups taste better there according too my friend.
I would have rated them 5 stars until recently. But the elimination of the express checkout for self checkout, makes it hard for them to justify their high prices. They’ve always been high priced, but high service level. Lower your prices or bring back express checkout please.
This white owned white bread grocery store just charged me over $11 for a pound of ground beef in a black latino North Portland neighborhood. Going forward don't act and ever advertise that black lives matter and do us all a favor and see your way out of our neighborhood.
A clean, well lit and nicely laid out market that carries many local, high quality snacks and gourmet ingredients. We didn’t have to go anywhere else, as they had everything we needed for a cozy dinner with nice wine at our Airbnb after a whole day of exploring Portland.
I love New Seasons. Friendly staff, great selections, lots of local. I wish their prices went so high. Sure, for organic, ethically raised, etc meat, I'm happy to pay a premium, but orange juice didn't need to be 50¢ to $1.00 more than other stores for the same brand.
Please bring back the custom sandwich bar! Why get rid of it?!? “No more waiting in line for sandwiches.” NO! It was so perfect. You could order a sandwich, shop, and then pick up a yummy, customized hoagie. The premade sandwiches at the hot bar are not it. …
It was my first time and I would love to come back soon for my groceries. They hold a high standard for their produce, fruits, and deli. I got some good wines, and groceries done in less than 10mins. The staff was helpful and knowledgeable. I love to be back soon
Awesome spot for people watching. Watching the new local yuppies and hipsters park their bikes and Hybrid cars is fun. amazing selection of local and organic produce an incredible deli that I absolutely love. One of my favorite stops along the way home from work.
It's OKAY. A big selling point for me is that it's the only market within walking distance. The fruits and vegetables are usually much better quality than anywhere else, but that's about it. Seems like stuff here is a lot more expensive than if I went elsewhere.
It's my local New Seasons since I live across the street. Absolutely love how friendly everyone in the store is. They've done a great job with Covid and keeping things organized and moving along. Good beer selection and the bakery items are always fantastic.
Good service. Customers are always happy here because of the upbeat atmosphere reflected by the employees. The store is super clean and tidy. Easy to find things in the store. The deli serves made to order and there is a self serve hot bar/salad bar.
Great quality grocery store, in the same vein as whole foods or a nice co-op. Here you'll have no shortage of organic produce and free-range chicken. The variety at the deli was great too! Neighborhood residents are lucky to have a place like this.
Not cheap, but everything is quality and most products are environmentally friendly. Great options for ready made food. Location is definitely convenient in relation to Legacy Emanuel. Best thing to do is try it out and make your own conclusion.
Popular place to grab lunch during the week. The deli the pretty slow during peak lunch hours. If you're having something made, you should expect it to take at least 30 minutes. Last time I was here I ordered a burger without bacon. It took
Close to home so it wins maximum points for convenience, but I have to take a star off for the mildly ridiculous prices (even the same item is significantly cheaper at Freddie's or Safeway) and the sometimes less than friendly staff. Great
Horrible team in sandwich department, very unhappy people compared to other locations, tried for 3 days and they made so many mistakes everyday with one sandwich, besides that she touched everything around with her gloves, trays, cabinet
The freshness of produce/products here is surprisingly BAD! On more than one occasion i've bought a bag of potatoes, only to come home to find that every potato in the bag is rotten! This happens a lot with avocados, and even the ground
Wow! What a nice store this is! I am a personal shopper for Instacart. My “batch” (shopping order) lead me to this delightful store. I was a bit nervous at first because I had never shopped this store before, but was delighted to find
My favorite New Seasons in portland. The staff here is incredible. Good beer and wine selection, and you can almost always find someone to help you pick. They sell fresh curry leaves as well just ask one of the produce workers.
New Seasons local Portland favorite. Williams and Fremont is my favorite because it's my ol neighborhood where I lived at Knott and MLK. Staff very knowledgeable and friendly. Selection of items top knotch. Kudos to New Seasons
Great location with wide aisles. There were a lot of options in the bakery that looked fantastic. They even had samples out! We got a pretty doormat and the groceries we needed. Checked out quickly with a human cashier.
Good atmosphere lots of great food options. The quality is good and the staff are always super friendly. The store has an amazing salad bar section. And I love their plant selections. Very nice store to visit.
Great customer service. The market is conveniently located within walking distance to Randall's Childrens hospital. They have an amazing variety of bakery and dessert items. The tiramisu was delicious …
Very nice people somewhere than others security guards are kind honestly the place is a bit overpriced but I see it has been changing a lot and it's been going down overall still a bit expensive
Great store , love their produce section. The people that work there are very helpful , if you can't find something they well take you to it. Their employees seem to really like their jobs !
Overpriced. Slow cashiers. Never carry normal items like actually absorbent paper towels. This place generally gets by on gouging the locals because it’s the only store in the neighborhood.
Spendy. Stopped serving custom sandwiches in the deli for which I always went in for. Never eat the soup because it's self serve and people hanging their heads over the pots not sanitary.
I stopped by New Seasons to get a cup of soup while I wait for rush to clear. The service is great, soup's good AND there is a nice little fireplace in the dining area! See pic. …
This is only the second new seasons I've been in and this one is WAY nicer then the other. I love that everything is in easy to find aisles. The salad bar was just what I needed!!
A convenient location with good, fresh variety. Workers are always nice here too! Although it's a short trip for us, we can only shop for some things as prices are a bit high.
Would have been 5 stars but parking for cars suck.i understand that the main customer are biking but 66 year old with Parkinson's disease would be interesting to navigate
Great place to shop amazing floral department great choices of produce and lots of options from the deli. All foods to accommodate all diets great prices amazing staff.
Delicious hot food and great selection of Hydroflask containers and accessories! They were the best when I was stuck at the children's hospital with my son for 2 weeks!
Great place to chill and eat, Shop, discover new veggies and fruit. Great customer service! Cheaper than whole foods but just as great without the corporate backing.
Staff are competent, very helpful&wellcoming/friendly.Fresh&high quality vegies/fruits & a quite a variety of everything else, except may be magazines.Thank you.
I love new seasons. Most of all of them are super easy to shop and the staff are also nice! Maybe the nicest grocery store staff in the USA
I went here to get some food and the guy at the counter told me no because he "Didn't want to make it". Will definitely not be returning.
Nice grocery store. Very community based I feel. The workers were very nice for the most part. Overall I enjoyed my shopping experience
Good selection, but so overpriced! One week's worth of groceries never should have cost us $470! Do not recommend unless in a pinch.
Overall great, a fairly small neighborhood new seasons. Only real issue is parking is a pain. The lot will be full most of the day.
Always helpful and friendly staff! You can tell they hire with intent and I'm grateful this is my neighborhood grocery store!
When I first had kids I would go to New Seasons to feel human again. It will always hold a special place in my heart. …
This place implemented self checkout and it's terrible. They are owned by a Korean conglomerate that owns Walmart Korea.
My daughter is a meat cutter here so of course, if you want a great cut of meat, go talk to the red head. She's amazing
Their assistance to finding groceries are amazing. They are good people and the store is very clean and well organized.
I LOVE New Seasons! The variety of healthy options can't be beat. Plus the staff always look happy and in a great mood.
Excellent CBD selection with soda, great tasting sandwiches made-up fresh, fantastic fruit, and good selection of wine.
Always good. Kind staff, good people, great food. Just wish there was more authentic Japanese food or condiments.
I love their produce section. Not cheap, but definitely worth it. Well organized and just exactly what I need!!!
Nice place, clean. Not very welcoming. It’s great feeling like you(I) don’t belong there. That’s my experience.
It's always an amazing experience at New Seasons. My favorite item right now is the scrumptious Banana Cake...
NOT CYCLISTS -FRIENDLY anymore. Told me i couldn't shop into my upright trailer then check out like I do
Great customer service, clean, well-stocked with a variety of great options. Not much else you can say.
Always an AMAZING experience. I really appreciate the variety, cleanliness, and kindness. Thank you!
Came in for the burger week burger and it was good, will go back for another. Store is well kept.
The beautiful fruit and vegetable lady was so helpful in this store I really appreciate that
Amazingly overpriced. But the options make up for it. I do like all the vegan options
One of the nicer New Seasons locations, which makes sense as it's relatively new.
