Last Tuesday morning, I had my first MRI appointment at the Radiology department. Whilst I'm aware than COVID-19 still lingers around, I found having to wear a 3M N95 face mask was really unnecessary to say the least. They're very uncomfortable to wear and not easy to adjust. Also, having to do an online check-in for COVID-19 symptoms was very annoying and time consuming but I did the right thing. At the front desk, the female receptionist directed us to the elevators and said to go to level 1. Waiting for said elevators was annoying as they were very slow and both of them kept going up. Mind you, I wouldn't have any issue with it if I wasn't pressed for time. I didn't want to be late for my MRI appointment at 11am. Finally we made it to the Radiology department. The receptionist Lily was very friendly and didn't take long to get my paperwork and payment organised. I was met by a female Asian nurse in blue scrubs who took me through to the MRI treatment room. She was also very friendly and professional. I was then instructed to remove all of my personal belongings plus clothing down to my underwear in the change room cubicle. Next, a young female nurse who I believe was the radiographer got me to fill out a questionnaire and also explaining to me the procedure. She was very thorough and did her best to reassure me as I was quite anxious up to this point. Next I was instructed to sit up in the padded chair to have my contrast dye IV catheter inserted into my arm. Unfortunately, I had a negative reaction to this, one that I've had previously during blood tests (Vasovagal syncope). I tried to do all the right things including looking away from the injection sight, breath control, positive self talk etc but nothing could stop it. The proper name for this is Trypanophobia or fear of needles. I suddenly became light-headed and I told this to the dark skinned female nurse who gave me the injection. Initially, she didn't take me seriously but then I began to become pale and broke out in a feverish sweat. She called for nearby staff to get me to lie down on a low hospital bed. It took around 15-20 minutes or so for me to return to "normal". Whilst I appreciate the dark skinned female nurse checking my blood pressure, she honestly went overboard and even tried to cast down on whether I was well enough to go ahead with the MRI procedure. I actually felt quite judged in that moment and I silently protested that I wanted to do it, considering how difficult it was just to get this booking time. After I recovered from my reaction, the staff took me into the room with the MRI machine. Starring up at the ceiling, there was an illuminated blue sky which did help a little to calm my nerves. Again they explained the procedure, what would happen and what I needed to do. They gave me yellow ear plugs and a set of headphones to wear as well as offering an eye mask. It was like being squeezed into a narrow tunnel with lots of cushioning around my body. I basically had to try to keep as still as possible whilst controlling my breathing. I had to do several rounds of inhalations, exhalations and breath holds usually up to 25-30 seconds. Honestly, it was a struggle but I did my very best. As you could imagine, the MRI machine made a lot of strange, robotic noises as it scanned my body. I also had to endure the cold sensation of the contrast dye being released from my arm as well as warm sensations through my torso. But overall, I did okay. I estimate that I was in the MRI machine for around 30-40 minutes or so. Despite my negative experiences, I was thankful to all the staff who looked after me during my first MRI procedure. Yes I probably should have been more upfront about my previous negative reactions with blood tests so that they could accommodate for this but I think my anxiety got in the way and I was doing my best to be strong and brave.

My experience at the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) was nothing short of a nightmare. I was brought to RMH in an ambulance following a severe fall down a flight and a half of stairs, with my body wracked with excruciating pain. I implored the doctors for help, but my pleas seemed to fall on deaf ears. Instead of addressing my immediate pain, they fixated on a previous spinal surgery from 2008, insisting that my agony was merely muscle inflammation. Their response was to offer nothing more than Panadol, leaving me in agony. Despite promises of a full-body MRI, I was shocked when they only ordered a scan for my neck. It took the intervention of a nurse who discovered complications that prompted a second doctor's evaluation. Yet, my relentless pain in the upper thoracic spine and solar plexus area continued to be ignored. I attempted to convey my family history of aorta ruptures, but it seemed like they regarded my concerns as a mere fairy tale. To compound the frustration, the pharmacist decided to intrusively inspect my father's medications, treating me with disrespect when I dared to voice my concerns. Even my simple request for a medication list was met with a denial and a dismissive response. The nurses recognised my suffering and sought stronger pain relief, but the doctors prescribed nothing more than Panadol and 200mcg temgesic. My pleas to see a doctor regarding my chest and thoracic pains were consistently postponed, offering no resolution in sight. My RMH experience left me in relentless agony, rendering me incapable of working. To make matters worse, other hospitals were eager to refer me back to RMH due to a new address hospital catchment allocation, leaving me trapped in this nightmarish cycle. A subsequent visit to a different Hospital, with more basic facilities, revealed issues that RMH had overlooked due to a shocking lack of care and empathy. I am now desperate for a transfer to a hospital that genuinely prioritises patient well-being. I regret to say that my experience with RMH, particularly its doctors, has left me disillusioned. They have fallen far short of their claimed skill and expertise. Hospitals like St. Vincent’s, The Alfred, The Epworth, and even Western Health outshine RMH when it comes to diagnosing patients. They don't solely rely on machines for answers. It's disheartening to feel like these messages may fall on deaf ears, as it seems that patient care is lacking at RMH. I can only hope that somehow, the service at RMH can be improved to prevent others from going through what I experienced. If other hospitals cannot alleviate my pain and suffering away from RMH, I may be left with no choice but to make a video detailing my ordeal, including all details, and share it on social networks. The overwhelming pain has pushed me to contemplate drastic measures to end my suffering permanently. It's a desperate plea for attention to a deeply troubling situation.

WARNING STAY WELL CLEAR OF THIS HOSPITAL. UNFORTUNATELY OTHER HOSPITALS WERE ON BY PASS, WHEN MY HUSBAND WAS ILL. OUR GP TOLD US TO GET TO A MAJOR HOSPITAL FOR SPECIALIST CARE. THE SPECIALIST BEN THOMSON, TOLD JOHN THAT HE WAS A LIVER CANCER SPECIALIST. DON'T BE MISLEAD. HE IS NOT. PROF BEN THOMSON IS A SURGEON & SENT JOHN HOME INAPPROPRIATELY WITH NO DIAGNOSES, VOMITING UNABLE TO HOLD SOLID FOOD DOWN, WIITH NO DISCHARGE PLAN. JOHN HAD LIFE THREATENING ABDOMINAL PAIN. IT TOOK BEN THOMSON FROM JUNE 18TH TO AUGUST 27TH TO FINALLY REFER JOHN INTO VCCC PETER MAC. MY HUSBAND DIED. THE ONCOLOGIST AT VCCC PETER MAC SAID IF JOHN WAS REFERRED IN JUNE THEY COULD HAVE SAVED HIM. WHEN I PHONED BEN THOMSON, AFTER MY HUSBAND DIED, & ASKED HIM WHY IT TOOK HIM SO LONG TO GET JOHN INTO PETER MAC, HE SAYS HE DID NOTHING WRONG! FRIENDS TELL ME THE RMH STANDS FOR RECKLESS MALICIOUS & HOSTILE, SO MANY ERRORS CAUSING DEATH. I KNOW WE ARE ALL HUMAN, BUT THERE ARE OTHER HOSPITALS IN MELBOURNE, THAT ARE FAR MORE ACTIVE ADEQUATE & EFFICIENT. OTHER HOSPITALS SHOW A DUTY OF CARE TO GET A DIAGNOSES & BOOK YOU IN FOR TREATMENTS. RMH SAY THEY ONLY HAVE TO GET THE PATIENT STABLE, BUT THEIR IDEA OF STABLE IS NOT GOOD! I AM ONLY SORRY I DIDN'T HAVE MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE & I DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO NAVIGATE THE HEALTH SYSTEM. I WISH I HAD POWER & AUTHORITY TO GET JOHN INTO PETER MAC VCCC, SOONER. FROM MY FAMILY FRIENDS & MY EXPERIENCE, ST VINCENTS, SUNSHINE & WESTERN HAVE A WAY BETTER RECORD OF PRESERVING LIFE, & GETTING THE PATIENT A DIAGNOSES & TREATMENT. THE SAD THING IS THE ROYAL MELBOURNE DOESN'T LEARN. EVEN IN HINDSIGHT DR HAYES AGREES WITH BEN THOMSON THAT JOHN WAS SENT HOME APPROPRIATELY!! IN 6 WEEKS MY FRIEND WAS UP TO HER 3RD LOT OF IMMUNOTHERAPY, & REFERRED TO SUPPORT SERVICES & SHE HAD NO HEALTH COVER. IN 6 WEEKS JOHN WAS STILL WAITING FOR HIS NEXT APPOINTMENT WITH BEN THOMSON, & JOHN HAD FULL HEALTH COVER, & WAS NOT REFERRED TO ANY CARE SERVICE. I ONLY MANAGED TO GET PALLIATIVE CARE ON THE 2 SEPTEMBER WITH NO HELP FROM BEN THOMSON. MY HUSBAND DIED ON THE 9 TH SEPT. 7 SHOWER HELP ARRIED ON THE 13 SEPT BUT MY HUSBAND HAD ALREADY DIED.

My daughter came in for heart surgery on Jun 7, 1st surgery for the day. We are from regional Victoria so it was enough stress for her being well and truly away from home and out of her comfort zone. Where do I start? We arrived at 6:30 to check in. Your admissions clerk Heather was extremely helpful and professional. Thank you Heather. Carrol (pretty certain that was your name), the nurse who helped prep her for theater went above and beyond, my daughter was extremely nervous but you were absolutely fantastic, you hooked your phone to a speaker, logged into spotify and played Lana Del Rey and Foo Fighters to help calm her massive anxiety. After the surgery you continually checked on her and also made sure my wife and I were coping well. Thank you Carrol. Dr Kalman, our brilliant surgeon performed a successful operation, effectively ending 6.5 years of terrible heart issues, parental angst, missed days of school and many ambulance trips to the ED. You were professional, you had a great bedside manner and the zoom meetings we had beforehand inspired huge amounts of confidence in you. Thank you Dr Kalman Tiff, our ward nurse, you just topped off what was a wonderful experience on a very stressful and mentally draining day. You looked after all of us with compassion and understanding, that made the day so much easier. Thank you Tiff. All of those who I didn't meet or get your name but were part of the team, thank you as well. I have put enough info in this review for the staff involved to be able to be identified by the people that need to know about it. I hope you receive the recognition that you deserve.

We were ask to attend for an elective planned surgery. This is a second procedure follow on from the first. The 1st admission process was smooth with minor hiccups that we overlooked because we were happy with the surgical outcome. The second procedure we were aware that we might be the 3rd listed for surgery. We were advised to attend for pre-admission procedure at 6.30 am. We did as we were told. The nurse advised us that we might be called in at 1130hrs to get ready to be taken to theatre. We waited, waited and waited and no call for theatre or a decency of an update on the delay. We attend RMH at the surgeon request which we know is best with the expert in the field here. We attended as private patient in a public system. We don't have any problem with that arrangement either. But someone who is highly anxious with heighten anxiety and a delay such as this is entirely unacceptable. It further exacerbated with such appalling poor communication. Providing the best health care does not stop at surgical outcome alone, but how the patient and the family made to feel the entire experience will be what constitutes best health care. I don't know this is a result of poor training where empathy is out of the window or complete complacency of the public system. If one were to admit to ED, with no bed within 4 hours will be a red flag. Not until we approached the reception staff we received an update. What has been a good encounter is tarnish by such lack of attention to basic courtesy of good communication. Very disappointing today.

The doctors who ‘looked after’ me in emergency when I presented a couple of times a year or so ago need to be held accountable. I’d hate for anyone to go through what I went through with them. On my first visit, I came in with severe back pain, struggling to walk. I was seen by Dr Jonathan Knott who gave me a lecture about anxiety and mental health after he saw my mental health history he was basically implying that was the reason for my pain. I was made to feel ashamed by him and the nurses taking blood who were laughing at me I felt completely humiliated. On my second visit to ED I was blacking out among other things etc. again, I was humiliated by the doctor, made to feel as though I was being dramatic, was even yelled at by him and discharged to the curb with no way of getting home I have had an incredibly difficult journey since those first couple of visits, was bedridden for a year, unable to work & live my life as a young person in their 20s. However, I have since been diagnosed with a connective tissue disease, dysautonomia and a couple of herniated & bulging discs in my spine. So to those doctors who told me I was dealing with anxiety/being dramatic, you couldn’t have been more wrong, I hope you read this and learn a lesson. I am now able to work a couple of days a week since receiving some treatment for my symptoms and that is huge. Had I listened to those doctors in emergency I wouldn’t have gotten the help I needed.

WOULD GIVE 0 STARS IF I COULD!!! Worst hospital I've ever visited. Unprofessional, sluggish response, poor receptionist service, and obviously inexperienced doctor. Having paid more than $500 for JUST a normal checkup, I assumed the service would be good. I had a fever of 41 degrees, was feeling very dizzy, had been unable to eat or drink for two days due to a sore throat, and was on the verge of passing out because I couldn't breathe. The front desk staff, though, didn't seem to mind. I repeatedly requested medication, but that provided no relief. Had to wait more than four hours on the EMERGENCY ward with a large group of sick patients who were all coughing and vomiting, waiting for who knows how long. These patients obviously shared the same horrible experience as I did. When I was eventually called, the doctor only gave me a quick physical and recommended some migraine medication that I was ALREADY taking. I told him, but he paid no attention. I again requested an infusion despite being terribly dehydrated and starving. Doctor only gave me one perscription paper of the medicine I had to buy MYSELF at the apothecary. Nothing, not an injection, not a provided medication. Not even a justification for my vomiting, chest discomfort, or nausea. It seemed like the worst day of my life as I walked out. I will spread the word about this review as widely as I can in an effort to save others from experiencing what I did.

If i could rate this hospital lower I would. Absolutely disgusted with the treatment of patients at this hospital. My mother went there in pain with a referral stating what was wrong with her from her GP, she got admitted they made her fast for 3 days to prepare for whatever surgery they were gonna do, meanwhile they did not bother to actually communicate what they’re plans were, regardless of the endless asking from myself and family of what they were gonna do. Instead she had multiple doctors tell her “it’s most likely cancer. “ Then a couple days after they finally decide to do their job, and figured out it was nothing that serious fixed it in a minor surgery then kicked her out that same day whilst in pain. She went there again for another referral from her GP, and yet again 2 days later she was told to leave and that there was “nothing they could do about it”. Then again recently my mother went there in pain and instructed by her pain specialist to go there, and this time they poked fun at her asking “oh are you a nurse are you?”. Multiple different doctors had asked her this before saying “why did you come here your a women, you should’ve gone to the women’s hospital.” Then yet again she was kicked out in pain with absolutely no assistance. This is my first and last experience with this hospital as it is the worst hospital I’ve ever dealt with. Absolutely terrible doctors and terrible nurses.

Most of the staff here are quite arrogant and egotistical! There is zero accountability so when things go wrong don't expect to be treated fairly. Not inclusive environment either! They seem to thrive off being racist and misogynistic. Roger Bingham is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and has no compassion and will cancel surgery multiple times with no explanation after waiting more than two years! Andrew Bucknill head of orthopaedics needs to be held accountable for the neglect of patients! World class at justifying abhorrent behavior and excuse making! While covid played a significant role in long wait times it isn't a defence for negligence! Do yourself a favour and avoid this place. There are other hospitals in the country that actually have professionalism and compassion! All these guys care about is their research papers and looking good on the TV! Update: Don't bother with consumer liaison they don't care if you have been abused by this hospital. Expect to be yelled at down the phone! "We are a major trauma hospital". This statement is true but is apparently justification for leaving someone with no support and now can't walk! RMH doesn't believe everyone has the right to treatment and the ability to walk!

With out a doubt the best hospital in Australia…. My story is quite long and detailed as to why I ended up in this hospital( for the first time ) but it was an Emergency case with an extremely serious situation. The services I was given and the level of care and professionalism for each separate factor were second to none. The administration accepted me at short notice from a regional hospital and after a few hours and further testing ( I had already completed many high level tests prior to arrival) I was give a bed and started the process for receiving the best care anyone could expect For processing as a patient it was advised that I be accepted as a public patient even though I had full private cover….there were many reasons I accepted this offer with the number one reason being I could see that the standard of care was of a very high standard along with convenience of care directly available. Please to everyone who use this hospital and other public hospitals in Australia, please be respectful and be kind to everyone who works hard to give you the best care available because they genuinely do it at the highest standard and do it sometimes under extremely high levels of stress. God Bless you all

I feel a bit bad about giving only 4 stars. I collapsed in the city and was taken by ambulance to Royal Melbourne. I don't remember anything of the whole episode until I woke up to find my family with me. I had had scans by then for a suspected stroke, didn't remember having this. I was diagnosed with Transient Amnesia. The doctor, Dr Joseph Curran, (absolutely amazing bedside manner, so caring) explained about the Amnesia. However I did feel that he and his boss, who was present while speaking to me, not knowing my spinal history, didn't really want to focus on what I thought was the real reason for my collapse which was spinal nerve entrapment. I tried to explain that my legs had collapsed a week prior to this episode but at that time I hadn't lost consciousness. It was at home and not traumatic like the Crown Casino!! They had been focusing on a possible stroke when I was admitted which was in no doubt the correct thing to do at the time. However, I couldn't give 5 stars because the pillows are like sleeping on bricks. I couldn't sleep. A suggestion to everyone to take your own pillow! The staff I came across during my short stay were very friendly and helpful.

Need a double hip replacement. Waited a year for an appointment just to be seen by a registrar, who told me my surgery would be done by Roger Bingham, who I never met. In the meantime I have to resort to crutches to move around and can no longer work or look after my chronically ill daughter. After my doctor's Intervention, 10 months later, finally get a surgery date. I have only spoken to the Orthopedic Liaison Nurses. I still haven't met my surgeon, I still haven't got a clue what the surgery entails, which method will be used...Am I expected to just turn up and be operated on like a lump of meat? Where is the consultation, the empathy, the humanity in this? Needless to say I don't feel safe and will cancel, have already been cancelled twice anyway. Will have to continue to struggle with lack of mobility and pain on a daily basis. Very disappointed, poor practice on Royal Melbourne's part. Update: Went to a Private Orthopedic Surgeon who remarked over and over again on seeing my xrays "How can they have left you like this? Apparently my hips are frozen. I'm looking forward to being treated and listened to!

My partner suffered acute appendicitis, and we went to the Royal Melbourne Hospital ED. The ED is obviously under enormous pressure with limited staff resources. We did have to wait for a bed, but the staff in ED were doing their very best under constant pressure and started the process of taking bloods, inserting a cannula and providing pain relief. Taken through to ED Short Stay where my partner was examined by Dr Michelle who was lovely and correctly diagnosed appendicitis on initial examination. Fortunately, there was a bed on 3 South. Again, a awesome staff with amazing clinical skills - 3 South nursing staff, doctors and pharmacist - you are legends! All of the complicated IV medication regimen was handled with speed and efficiency as was required. Emergency surgery the next day. Again, awesome surgical team under Dr McCormick. The appendix was removed via keyhole surgery, revealing that it was badly inflamed and could have ruptured, so this was a life-threatening episode. And then home the next day to recuperate. 100% ever-lasting gratitude and thanks to the RMH and its staff.

I don't know where to start from,I had a fall on Oct 7 2023 and ambulance took me to ED,I was attended fast and though I was high with green whistle but I can still say all the staff who attended me was very supportive. Mind it I never been to hospital in my full life. After I came out of theatre, I moved to orthopedic ward, some ward5 ..sorry don't exactly remember, but the Nursing staff there was so helpful and supportive they really tried there best, they talk positive they listen you ,understand you and took care of your dignity and privacy, after a week I moved to.plastic OMG the Nursing staff there was like an angles sorry I can't name anyone as they all were the best including an Asian uni student.what a great level of skills and patience the staff have.thank you very much all doctors and nursing staff to fix me up and taking a great care of me.will surely visit in person to pay my gratitude and to say thanks to all once am completely recovered. Wish you all a very merry x mas and a happy new year. Regards

If you want to be berated, bullied, looked down upon and made to feel like you’re not doing well as a first time mother then this is the place to go! If you want to be yelled at for being 10mins late for feeding time this is the place to go to! If you want to be looked down upon for why you haven’t had a shower (I’m sorry I’ve just given a natural labour two days ago) then this is the place to go to!! Rainbow clowns and rainbow agenda is all they care about. Once you’re in, you’ll never be able to get out of there system and they treat you worse than a mental asylum. The little condescending games they play is absolutely disgusting. They first welcome you like they care, make you feel vulnerable and then use it all against you. The saddest party of all this is that they are meant to be a woman’s hospital, advocating and supporting woman. The only support they give is one that fits their agenda, their narrative and most importantly one that pays their pay cheque. NEVER AGAIN!!!!

E.D are always busy everywhere these days but this hospital actually show their patients respect and keep you informed where possible about the reality of the wait times. They’re staff are professional and on point. I have never been so impressed with an Emergency Department before. They have cold water for people in the waiting area when you go to the desk. Once I was seen the staff were amazing and were very thorough I was amazed. This is the best public hospital in Melbourne. They make such excellent use of every resource available and they kept the floors cleaned and were diligent and professional. After years, I’m finally getting the treatment I need. I am so relieved. Thank heavens for this hospital and their staff. They are the best example of what a hospital should be to patients. I got to enjoy the food court too once discharged and the spud bar was beautiful they even had a healthy yoghurt and smoothie shop that was so pretty with gelato and low fat yoghurt. The best.

The appointment process for few of the conditions like void trail after the delivery is not good. I had multiple void trails after my normal delivery. The first trail they scheduled appointment and there were no appointments scheduled for upcoming trails. Every week need to go emergency or to specified floors. You need to wait long to assign you ward. Last time waited nearly 2 hr to assign me ward. There were no midwives assigned to my case, had to wait them to get assigned and start process. With catheter, stitches it will be hard to sit for hours. You have to wait too long to get you seen by your gynecologist. I had bad experience with catheter insertion, 2 people pricked in multiple places other than urethra and it was painful for 2 more days. I have not got call from them yet for my next appointment, if I call to hospital number it's always busy. Please do schedule appointments in prior and keep the plan ready for the same.

Omg I felt like I died and went to heaven, Didn't know Heaven was called Royal Melbourne Hospital lol, went in on the 21st of Nov for a collapsed lung and ALL the staff were so kind and I LOVE them all. Especially Nurse Lucy with the tattoos, she really helped me to concentrate on her while I was being operated on, I didn't feel any pain or even notice that it was over cause she had my entire attention , thank you soooo much Lucy. Also shout out to the TV Crew 'Emergency' for channel 9, even they were so nice to me. 10/10 would recommend if you need a lung fixed hah I'm currently still here recovering and all Gods Lil angels are still taking care of me (Adrian) and I just wanted to say Thank You All from The Paramedics to Surgeons, from the Receptionist to The Aboriginal Liasons, from the Transport officers to The Cleaners, from the Doctors to the Nurses, Thank You, I Love you, God loves You :)

The genetics and immunogenetics departments have treated me like a useless piece of trash since I first walked through their doors. I have an extremely rare genetic condition, they decided since I don't present like others with the same genetic defects I was panel tested for, I have a different type of disorder, one without any genetic marker. They put me in the "too hard" basket. Immunogenetics dismissed me, gave me overly fake and layered on sympathy and gave me a prescription for antihistamines I couldn't even fill at my local pharmacy. They said I can have *one* genetic counselling appointment. I haven't had it yet, since I will use it if and when I decide I might want kids, since I will need to understand the ramifications. My experience here has been the worst health care experience in my entire life, and I have had *heaps* of those. I feel like trash. If I could give them 0 stars, I would.

I plan to write an extremely detailed review of this place, as it is flawed in almost every respect, but two quick warnings for patients/prospective patients. 1) If you experience complications following substandard surgery at THIS HOSPITAL performed by THEIR STAFF, good luck getting help. If you ring the numbers listed on the discharge instructions, you won't be guaranteed to get timely advice or assistance. It took me a week of calls. I was promised that the doctor on call would call me back (didn't happen), the doctors on call were "too busy" to help (despite it being their responsibility), and many of the nurses were incredibly officious, obstructive and unkind. 2) The feedback/complaints service aka "Consumer Liaison" is a scam, staffed by lazy, inveterate liars who will do absolutely nothing to resolve the situation. There are better hospitals.

I recently visited the Royal Melbourne Hospital emergency department and wanted to express my sincere gratitude for the care and attention that I received. When I arrived, I was provided with a wheelchair and immediately felt taken care of. The nurses were all very nice and made me feel comfortable. I was pleased to find that the waiting time was relatively short, and before I knew it, I was being seen by a doctor. The doctor was excellent - he listened carefully to my concerns and provided a thorough examination. I felt confident in his ability to properly diagnose and treat me. Overall, my experience at the Royal Melbourne Hospital emergency department was very positive. The staff were kind, efficient, and professional, and I am grateful for the care that I received. Thank you to everyone who was involved in my visit.

So grateful to have such an amazing public hospital nearby. In particular all the staff were absolutely phenomenal - caring, knowledgeable, compassionate and professional. No matter what the time or what the request they responded with a cheerful and positive attitude. The very first person I saw on admittance was a very professional doctor from the Neurology Department. I was in short-stay overnight through the Emergency Department so I’m sure they were under pressure, but they never let it show. The doctor who saw me prior to discharge gave me very comprehensive information on my condition. My husband had recently experienced the same service during his short stay. In addition we had access to the latest comprehensive tests with appropriate follow-up appointments and tests booked.

  • Zach Hickleton

Please read back through previous reviews. Nurses with no compassion and being forgetful or rude, the hospital doing everything they can to discharge you and severely unorganised. My partner was allowed to leave with a lack of information on her condition, was spoken to like she would never recover and left not being able to walk without support or talk more then a couple of words here and there. She has no plan on recovery and they focused on dismissing any concern she had. Didn’t get fed one morning and a nurse ‘forgot’ to get her pain medication one night so she was left in pain all night. I have made a complaint, so no need for the generic “if you would like to make a complaint please email….” Someone obviously gets paid for that, maybe invest that money in better staff.

  • Joshua Reeves

After a recent motorcycle accident that left me with severe injuries, I was subsequently airlifted to Royal Melbourne where I spent 2 days in ICU and a further 3 in the recovery ward. The staff were simply amazing on every level, always conducting themselves in the most professional way, yet always displaying compassion and caring. Although they were busy, none of my requests ever took long to be fulfilled, and one nurse went well above and beyond to locate something for me after my transfer from ICU. I really can't speak highly enough of them and will always be grateful to them. The food was a little standard, however, this is a public (not private) hospital with many mouths to feed, and overall there was a good selection. My thanks to you all at RMH, you are amazing.

I have recently had the pleasure yes Pleasure, of being a patient of this fine hospital ! I say this not because of its looks, but because of it’s staff, Firstly the emergency department, what an experience! Being able to recognise an emergency, when they see one! And be able to Triage so effectively.. I was admitted to 3 South, What can I say!! If all wards are like this one, we have no care issues.. From the Nurses who were excellent in care giving, The doctors and Surgeons, First class! All the way down to cleaners, and hospital services, a smile with a good morning, or a hello can I help you attitude! I applaud the RMH for its first class care, and support of those in need! .. Excellent!!

50/50 ur lucky if u get a doctor that cares and actually wants to help u. They neglect the patients and out right gaslight them saying you’re okay when people are clearly unwell so they can get rid of you. They have a duty of care or they should but they out right tell people they’re faking it. Disgusting behaviour specially given that some doctors there are actually good. The staff is a hit and miss and very disrespectful and out right refused to give me crutches after I came in on a wheelchair and was still unable to walk. Very poor communication with staff everyone came in telling me different instructions no one actually knows what they’re doing at all.

Recently had to attend here as a friend had a medical emergency, was extremely impressed with the friendliness of the staff despite it being a busy night shift. The nurses that attended our case, Jamie, Sabrina and Celeste were all extremely comforting and kind in what would have otherwise been an extremely uncertain and stressful visit. We were seen very quickly despite the busy waiting room, and the staff did everything to make my friend comfortable. My previous hospital visit had been at St Vincents, a truly terrible experience, and compared to that this experience was immesureably good. So grateful to have such an amazing public hospital nearby.

  • Vincent Spataro

I would like to thank the Doctors and Nurses who assisted me with my recent visit. Their care and service was very good. I felt like I was in safe hands who knew what they were doing. I did not feel like a number but felt that they each cared what happened to me as an individual. I appreciate what pressures these people are under every day with the numbers of people going there to seek medical help. We are very fortunate to have this type of facility to go to and to have front line workers who give their time day in and day out to help us when we need help. They should be given the respect they deserve. My hat is off to all of them.

My friend last night had a couple of bones taken out of her back. She was told after a major surgery she was staying one night then getting transported to Benalla her home Town hospital. Only to be told her husband had to take her home 4 hours away. She is in Benalla hospital with a infection because of Thier neglect so no not a great review. Our system is stuffed. Lack of fundindinf, lack of doctors, lack of hospital beds lack of care plus some people not being tough enough to deal with problems that don't need a hospital. Major part Government not being present in life just greed and how they look.

  • Scott Buckley

Took a knock after falling over at 4 in the morning (walking back to bed in the dark). Split my ear wide open so went down to the RMH ED. All the staff were wonderful. I believe I was triaged by a nurse called Briar who was very welcoming, and then Jay was my main nurse (I think that's the right name). All staff were great, including the Dr's. I particularly noticed how patient and empathetic the nurses were with others in the emergency waiting room, including some who were likely not easy to deal with. Great staff. What could have been a high stress experience was actually not that bad. Thanks everyone.

Myself and my family have had so many bad experiences with RMH. From nearly giving wrong blood type in blood infusion to making me have surgery that was genuinely useless and overdosing me on fentanyl. Some of the surgeons here just want to make their Porsche repayments. Always make sure you get a second opinion and that you are exceptionally vigilant when they are administering medications and blood. The acute medical unit is a joke as well, my grandfather received very minimal care there and worsened very quickly until he passed. This hospital needs a serious rework.

  • Moya

My partner is being discharged today after a double bypass at RMH totally impressed with his care - the Nurses on 6 South East have kept us fully informed Siew/Phillip/Wendy/Maria/Lynette? And others whose names we didn't get. They were all courteous and pleasant to deal as well as the Cardio Registrar .? Mani and HMO Olivia who also kept us fully in the loop - I believe it may have been the Surg Registrar Vid/Vic ? Who called me post surgery - credit where it's due !!!! Also need to mention Reuben the Pharmacist who had put a lot of work into his medication review

  • Ange Melb

Can't speak highly enough of the staff at RMH. From HITH, Emergency, to Transit Lounge, to the Ward. All absolutely exceptional!! Terrific options in the Cafe. Prices are high, but many healthy options and caters for anytime. Only complaint? Parking!! O.M.G. .... with all the works happening in area, there are no car parks close to all the hospitals unless you're staff or, you get here before 600am or after 430pm. There is 3 or 4 hour street parking along Flemington Rd- good luck. Would recommend dropping off patient, or take public transport.

  • Iqbal Gahunia

RMH is clearly one of the best hospital in the country but they don't have drinking water facility in the emergency area where people bring their sick family members as the last resort. There are people sitting thirsty waiting to be seen which can sometimes take hrs. My wife wes very sick and had to ask for a cup of water twice from the Triage nurse who told me to get water from the toilet if we needed any more. This was disgusting behaviour from a nurse who looked like doing a great job. I hope someone will look into this matter

  • Elizabeth Paraskevas

Horrible treatment! My dad had a serious fall and due to the seriousness of his injuries the ambulance took him to royal melbourne. He was left to lay in his own blood only to be told now 24 hours later we are "sorry" it is now too late for us to stitch you up. Meanwhile he is a diabetic! Exposed wound to the head! And that we are unable to do an mri as it is too expensive.... all that was focused on from 8am in the morning was to discharge him rather than take care in their patient! Disgusting treatment in my opinion!!

  • Ellen Scofield

Have a family member at Waratah Groups Program. It's appalling, there are peer support workers gossiping about my family member and revealing very sensitive information. There is no accountability and hierarchy either take no action or interrogate, bully and belittle people for raising issues. My family member's mental health is the worst it's ever been and she is in the danger zone. She has no support and I fear we will lose her. She's sure that's what they are aiming for. What do we do?? Just another RMH fail!

  • Garry K

Worst staff I have ever encountered. My wife was vomiting in the emergency department, all I ask person standing behind the triage nurse was to pass me the vomit bag. He completed ignored me. Upon complaining to triage nurse she told me they are paramedics and busy. All I ask is to pass me the vomit bag which was a metre away from him. I was given a racist look and the person just shook me away as if I was some disease. Trust me these guys are really racist when they see non white people

  • Steve McGraw

So went into the ED for an injury to my wife’s ankle (a fall). Now, it’s important to note there were only 4 people in the ER waiting area as that might make a difference. We got an assessment within about 5min on entering and had an X-Ray within 10min after that. Staff were very friendly. Quickly sent in where the attending Dr saw us and diagnosed the ankle. Super impressed with the professionalism and high level of care. Probably the best ED I’ve ever been to.

  • Balqisa A

One of the lowest hospitals I have ever seen. They are racist nurses and careless! I’ve never encountered racism like this. I was left 8-9 hours in the waiting room to be seen when I went in with a chest pain and migraine, they left me to cry and sit there with no medication to ease my pain. On top of that when I approached to ask where I was in the que, I was dismissed like I was trash. No one showed any sort of mercy , Wouldn’t let my worst enemy go here.

  • Audrey

4 doctors unable to take care of me and asked me to come back another day and to take medication (given by them) before that I arrive at the hospital which means to pay again the fees (I don't have Medicare card yet). The surgery took 1h so that in my country it was done in 20 minutes by only 1 doctor! Note that, in this hospital, you're not a patient but a client ☝️ NB: please don't reply to me to contact you or to complain because that's not the solution.

  • Karmacomin “snitches arunning” longto-ohoh

NO STARS .....After my car accident my partner & I were sent to RMH ER department, 3 days later at 6am we were both discharged I was told I had severe bruising and good bye, 6weeks later at my outpatients appointment I found out my back was broken in 2places, 4broken ribs, no diagnosis for my left foot-ankle-leg still swollen an moving u the leg, Take cre an see you in 6weeks. While I was a patient I did not get 1meal in 3days, DISGUSTED N NEVER AGAIN

  • Ed Mulligan

Can’t speak highly enough of the staff in the Emergency Department at RMH. I had to take my husband last night as he was experiencing chest pains. He was attended to straight away and the two nurses who cared for him (and me) were absolutely wonderful even though they were so busy. This was an example of health care at its very best in my view. Will send a formal letter to the hospital to pass on my heartfelt thanks to the excellent nursing staff.

  • Kay Mack

The 1 star is for the shambles of a fracture review appointment wait time on Level 1. Warned that it could be 3 hours, WHY? Even VicRoads has a better appointment system. There is no excusable reason to make patients, who are already in pain or discomfort, to sit around crowded waiting areas for hours on end. The staff are excellent but the system lets all of us down. Time to improve your review appointment waiting times and appointment processes.

  • Maria D'Alessandro

This cesspool of medical misconduct should be shut down. Untrained student staff, unsympathetic vile nurses who are rude and deceitful to relatives about patient care and health status. Disgusting, filthy and inhumane environment for patients. No toilet in tiny cubicles. Elderly patients must wee and defecate in front on nurses in their room where they also have their meals. Shocked that this exists in a first world country like Australia.

  • Kevin Gleeson

My brother was admitted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital after a very serious gyrocopter accident. When I tried to contact the hospital to see if I could talk to him all three people I spoke to were extremely helpful. They were efficient and caring and when I was finally put through from Emergency to ICU the staff member there went out of her way to let me talk to him. A terrific job from efficient and caring staff. Thank you all. Kevin.

  • Michele shellz

I was in the Emergency this morning to see about my pressure sore on my foot as I'm wheelchair user. When the doctor who was tall not sure.of his name he was on the morning shift called out my name all was good he started talking but with mask wearing and my hearing loss makes things difficult so I was asking my support worker for help, he doctor quickly realised I'm hard of hearing he pulled his mask off so that I can understand him.

  • Ken E.

I was at the rmh for about 8 hours today. I went in due to chest pains. Every employee I came across in the Emergency section, x-ray department and in the short stay section of the hospital was highly skilled and professional. Special thanks to Dr Anthony and all the nurses for making my day as pleasant as possible. I even learned that there is a such thing as a 3rd sound coming from the heart. Thank you!

  • George Smith

The attitude of the outpatient staff is beyond unacceptable. The lady that I spoke to was visibly annoyed as a result of being asked questions regarding my appointment and spoke to me in a extremely rude and condescending manner. Her behaviour was absolutely disgusting, any individual treating patients like this must be fired immediately. Try hiring staff who actually treat patients like human beings.

  • Wem Chen

I asked for capacity certificate in the end of August. But I still didn't get it. I sent several emails to you with different people. Someone gave me answers that someone would arrange it for me. But where is it? I need it to make my work cover claim approved and paid the bills from you. Please tell me who should I contact to get my capacity certificate. I have been waiting for more than two months!

  • Ayla Garcia

I’m really upset how poorly the doctors in Ed were on Friday night. I understand it was busy but they were so fed up with the waiting patients giving attitude to them, I waited 4hrs just to be seen for 10 mins and left. All the doctors gave me was a prescription for something I can get anywhere. I’m really upset how they didn’t take me seriously they said I’m fine and to go see my gp!?

  • Amandeep Mandhar

My father has allergic reaction and on way to hospital fainted in parking of hospital. I took him to emergency and the estimated wait time was approx 5 hours. Besides raising several concern of being restless there was no care or attention given. We had to leave emergency without doctors investigation. I hope the tax money gets better channelized in raising bar at emergency at least.

  • Jawad Arain

Other than the wait time to visit for your treatment which took my wife almost 2 months just for iron infusion, everything was perfect from doctors to nurses all staff are very courteous and caring. Clean and properly maintained hospital. Parking is an issue so come early to find a street car park. There is an IGA store nearby and an Australia post in the main building.

  • Rage

  • Suzie Q

This was the first time attending a city hospital/ED after moving from regional Vic. I wasn’t expecting much but the staff were amazing! Special shout out to Chris in Triage who was so kind and calm with everybody, nurses Lucy, Gemma and Sammi who were so kind and caring and doctor Cara who settled my asthma for me. What a wonderful team you have there Suzie xx

  • Leigh Street

My wife was admitted to emergency via an ambulance. The staff were an absolute delight. They were all so friendly and professional. Could not have asked for more caring people. I even had the car park attendant willing to help me when I couldn’t find a park. Although we were there for many hours the staff continued to remain attentive during this time.

  • Chicken Kebab (Chicken Kebab)

I’ve come to this hospital twice after having severe tonic-clonic seizures to only just be told “there’s nothing we can do here” and instantly sent home. It feels like negligence to send a confused and injured patient home within 45 minutes of them having a seizure I would go elsewhere but this is my local hospital so i don’t have a choice sadly :(

  • Janina Nowak

Visited Emergency today after a recent heavy fall that made me feel quite wobbly and just ill. Was attended by the exotic nurse Samsi and the gorgeous young Dr Ross, his first name. They tolerated my grumpiness, and carried on regardless. Good to know things are okay and the bruises will heal eventually. Thanks guys! You're stars, five stars worth.

  • Melissa Resnelis

Royal Melbourne Hospital is one of the BEST if not THE BEST hospital in Victoria. During 2023, i have had to visit the hospital frequently and all the times i have dealt with the hospital has been nothing but professional, caring and world class treatment. Thank you for all that you do you are truly remarkable as well as all the care you provide.

  • Florence N

I want to give a big shoutout to the nurses in the Acute Medical Unit ward for taking care of me <3 especially Sharmaine, Peta, Chanelle and Louise!!! You guys made my time there so much better and comfortable! Even though I'm not exactly a typical patient there, thank you for being so caring and thoughtful around me✨ …

  • Rachael Prentice

What an absolute joke. My mother in law needs heart surgery and has been there twice in the past two weeks. Both times she has waited all day only to be told they have ran out of time. Hopefully she will be alive when they decide they do have time. She has had to travel from Ballarat and pay for hotel rooms both times.

  • Phil Jones

My wife received a phone call from her Doctor regarding test results and was instructed to attend the emergency department immediately . The care she received from Dr Emma and nurses Ash and Ashlee and all the nursing staff was amazing. They were so thorough and caring. Thank you so much for such great care.

  • Peter webster

My wife was admitted for heart surgery ended up in ICU for 3 weeks. Treatment in ICU was amazing then moved to ward care by nursing staff great communication from and between staff very poor, could never get a straight answer to questions or why something was being done. Even stuffed up day release.

  • Chris Horsley-Wyatt

Day taff were nice to talk to but (mostly) so inefficient it was not funny. Except for the night staff, felt like they took some peverse pleasure in running blood preeaure every 3 hours and some form of other test or scan in the gaps between. Go to St Vinnies if you can get in.

  • Louise Jones

So grateful for the amazing staff who looked after me 2 years ago during my admittance for emergency brain surgery. When i was admitted to the ED last year, i can't fault the care i received and now when I attend for routine check ups I'm grateful for such a wonderful hospital.

  • Douglas Heath

i went into RMH for a work injury and from the time i went to ED to leaving the staff in all areas from ED to pre-op to recovery and ward were all fantastic, service , support and overall personality. For my first time at the RMH i highly recommend Can't thank the staff enough

  • RACHAEL HEALEY

If it wasnt for the surgeons ICU staff id be dead. Brain bleed untreated for 2 weeks. Dont you dare bag this hospital. Coming out of a coma after 9days and breathing on my own and learning what these special Angels did for me and not once did they give up and pull the plug.

  • Alaa Bakhamees

Review Based on my experiences from 2021 -2022: The Emergency department needs a lot of improvement, especially safety-wise. The Coronary Care Unit and Cardiology team are excellent. Especially the nurses; they were incredibly caring and supportive during that tough time.

  • K L

You've been fantastic! Your positive attitude and kindness reassured my family that I was being looked after, and throughout my stay I felt I was in good hands. I am now feeling stronger, and I am feeling much more hopeful about my recovery. Kind regards, Saba

  • Sheridan Miles nee Smith

Wonderful friendly, knowledgeable, kind and caring staff Always a clean, tidy and welcoming atmosphere. Can get very, very busy and sometimes wait time in ER can be quite long but when brought in by ambulance admission is quite a quick process.

  • Mohit Mahna

One of the worst hospital no communication No one knows what to do Waited 6 hours to see Doctor on the other hand about 10 nurses just standing and doing nothing No management and co-operation I believe just wastage of government money

  • Robert Hall

Wow, amazing service. As you can see below my femur was not looking great last Friday afternoon. ALL staff were amazing, cleaners, cooks, admin, of course all doctors and nurses and volunteers. Thanks to all. YOU DO AN AMZING JOB

  • vetatwork

Usless medical team. Been waiting 2.10 hours for junior Doctor to get my consent forms signed so I could have my surgery done. It's not 1 st time but I have my surgery cancelled 3 times for incident like that at R.M Urology.

  • Heiko RUDOLPH

Good experience in emergency department, they looked after me really well. Staff are all super busy doing a great job. Hospital has Been here a LONG time, seen a lot, good place. I did research here, well run.

  • Serena Huh

It was so nice to hear those two legends singing Space Oddity when I finished work at the John Cade building. It felt so warm, soothing and calming. Awesome arrangement and brilliant delivery of the project.

  • Isabella Scarmozzino

My grandfather came here to get his pace maker replaced and the service provided by the staff was immaculate. On behalf of my grandparents Cathy and Alex, thank you so much Olivia Baumann and Emma Richards!

  • Boosted Rb30

Emergency is a joke, staff look like there standing around on break Frustrating to say the least.. 7hrs wait... can see why is only 3 stars Can't even clean up spew in the main area piss poor …

  • Patrick Barnes

The care & treatment recieved here is world class can’t thank the doctors and nurses enough for their endless efforts to keep us safe & well- Big shout out to ward 7B you guys are angels …

  • L N

Had to resign my job working for this hospital, attend for emergency works with the risk of constantly getting fine, have to get parking permits with no parking for contractors half the time

  • Eva Kun

The staff are so kind and they do everything they can to work out how they can assist. Every scan or test to determine what the ailment is. Every level of staff is thoughtful and caring.

  • Cameron

Great place to stay if you want to detox and stay out of the cold long wait times though, photo taken yesterday in emergency wait room 10/09/23 today being 11/09/23 at 9:55 PM.

  • blueprint76

This hospital is a disgrace…Zero compassion, communication, respect for patients. I feel so disgusted by the staffs lack of care- I seriously want to vomit. Minus 100 stars.

  • Alfa Omega

For lovers of architecture this iconic building is a real treat. Exceptionally built, and crafted. Used for events of all kinds. Arguably marks the heart of Melbourne.

  • Judah A

The Royal Strawberry juice bar here is great. They have gelato and lots of options. I tried the juice! My lunch in the cafe was great also. Good variety!

  • Adila Siyo

Fantastic service. Hope all Royal Melbourne Hospital all Doctors and nurses wishes Happy Christmas and Happy new year 2024.. …

  • merilyn cassidy

Triage ! Waited hours when I was sent by a GP for a dislocated knee .Most in my opinion could have been to a GP instead of ED

  • Evan Sendi

Visited the hospital and all staff are nice specially nurse named Kennedy such a wonderful nurse professional and polite.

  • Maria Page

Fabulous Hospital, all Medical Staff are world class. Care and treatment my husband received was outstanding.

  • Christian Karcher
