It might be the Embassy of the United States, but it's worse than taking a stroll down the busy streets of Pettah on a hot day, because in Pettah you at least have the liberty to detour and go refresh yourself without burden. Those who visit the embassy for Visa appointments have to stand out on the street under the scorching sun, burning, sweating and getting dehydrated. Women, Children, Senior Citizens and everyone else, is expected to burn and sweat, yeah, burn and sweat! Sure the have some sort of a sun shade, but that doesn't do any justice at all. Irrespective of having confirmed appointment times, people are left out to burn and sweat and go through hardships. I wonder why they give an appointment time at all? If people need a sun bath or a tan, they'll goto the beach, there is no need for the embassy to force people to have a sunbath out there. I also noticed some low life folks cunningly managed to jump the queue, and the security had no clue, or didn't care. Way to go! True, I understand there are security concerns, but the moment human lives are treated without compassion, it nullifies the purpose of security. Once you manage to survive the queue and then get admitted to the embassy after 60-90 minutes, then things turn for the better, clean interiors, good air conditioning, nice facilities and courteous staff. True, the security is tight even after you enter, but that's necessary. The only major issue is the queues in the hot sun. Is that really necessary? Can't it be done better? Sure it can. So Is this the example the US wants to set? While I don't wanna guess as such, sadly, actions speak louder than words. What visitors have to go through standing at the queue outside is a blatant violation of human rights.

Very well administered and efficient. The service was great. If you are coming for the visa interview, it is advisable to come right on time (not early nor late). You will be called in based on your interview time slot. There is a thorough security check. You will have to remove shoes, belt and empty your pockets for that. You are not allowed to carry any bags, phone, beverages or food inside. There is a locker to keep your phone and you may carry your wallet with you, but there is no place to keep your bags. Therefore you will have to come with someone else who can hold your bag until you are done (it took around 2 hours for me). For the convenience I used 3 "My Clear Bags" to hold my documents. You may also use a file folder (You are allowed to take them inside with you). The day I went there most of the Visa Applicants were wearing formal attire. I guess any appropriate clothing should be fine.

Us citizen. Came for a passport renewal. Had a 1pm appointment and they said not to come any earlier (maybe they are on lunch break until then?). No seats to wait outside in the heat. Don't bring bags, they won't let you bring them in and won't store bags for you. Security is more strict than an airport. They will hold all electronics, including your phone, so make sure you have everything you need printed out or written down as you can't use your phone as a reference tool. Once past security, you will go through second security. It was not busy, but wait was still over an hour. I was not sure what to expect. Security inside was very friendly (they even refilled my water bottle) and so was the staff processing everything.

Good time wasters . My family member applied for a job vacancy at this place. He and the other applicant were the finalists . After the final interview they had to waste almost 1 month to get an update . No feed back is given. The HR keep telling to check mails week by week. after the last call given by an applicant HR said will inform within this week and cut the call. after about 15 min. HR is sending an email for the both applicant saying that we have selected an alien who landed on time. The applicants had to waste almost 3 months to hear this scam. Expected more from The US embassy .Very Very Dissapointing .

Few things to improve including communication through telephone, provide toilets for the outside queue, because people have needs (accidents happen to any one) specially keep a person outside to communicate when there are needs for person, place an instruction on the drawer to collect outside drops because no one can here properly when there are vehicles outside through the intercom system. This will avoid both your representatives and visa service receivers issues/difficulties.

i will never give a 1 star even, my wife and 2 little kids went for a visit visa interview and the sri lankans who is in the document receiving counters was so rudely and disrespectfuly talk to my wife.the visa officer is been so nicely talk because they know how to respect a person especially for a women.i really kindly request to USCIS or US Embassy to teach and how to behave in a good manner.horrible US embassy sri lankan front office staff..

I called the number designated for the non-immigration services today many times. I could only reach an agent three times and all those times, it was one girl (with a Sri Lankan English accent) who answered. She disconnected the line all three times as soon as I explained what information I needed, without giving an answer to my query. Very disappointed. Please do the job you are paid to do properly and with respect and honesty.

When you visit this place for visa you cannot take any sealed envelopes or any baggage if you have them keep them inside your vehicle or the shop infront of the US embassy they will charged 50 SLR (sri lankan rupees) Make sure your mobile phone is switched off and take the security steps they recommend ,you can keep your wallet with you do not hide any metal items or any thing inside your dress they will detect you .BE PUNCTUAL

I have been to lots of embassies (for visa) in Sri Lanka but US embassy is by far the best. Extremely professional & polite staff. Unlike most western embassies, US embassy have not outsourced their visa process to a third party company. The embassy handles the visa process themselves. The visit to the embassy for visa is well organised and staff is helpful. Quality service.

After reading the majority of these reviews I am saddened that the US Embassy has such a bad reputation. I have passed by the front of the Embassy a few times and noticed the line (there is a sun shade now for applicants). I am sure the security measures are much needed, but as a US citizen I think we need to do a better job in representing the US.

We want to thank you for making our Immigration Visa Processing was very pleasant, without any issues or hassles. We have been to lots of embassies for visas in Sri Lanka but the US embassy is by far the best. The staff is extremely professional, very supportive and very efficient. I am a US citizen and I'm appalled at how the US embassy in Sri Lanka treats applicants. It does not represent the values that the US was built on. Maybe its because Sri Lanka is a small country, the embassy does what it chooses instead of looking at each case individually-completely violating human rights in the process.

Tight security is provided to the embassy premises and you are not allowed to take any makeup and electronic devices such as pen drives. If you have poor conditions of English language speaking do not hesitate to request for a translator. Overall service is good unless they provide a seating area for applicants.

All the security staffs are really polite and good except the others here.... Specialy the counter number 2 is the worst... How rude is she... Us embassy doesn't knows to choose the right people for work.... And they doesn't remember with a difficult we pay alot and come to embassy not to just waste...

I have been there. Security was tight. Staffs were polite and kind full. The visa officer is so kind. The interview was soft and they don't look at the documents in order to grant a visa , it's secondary important. First important is to interview. My point is they have to look the documents too.

I am sorry to point out about USA embassy of sri Lanka Not working on time . And no Vehicle parking All the people coming and staying in the road a long time my Interview time is 7:30 AM but I did stay in the road near to 8.30am -Interview officer get decisions without find our details

I've gone through the visa process twice and always had a great experience with the staff here who were very helpful and straightforward. Received prompt responses for all my emails and it was very easy to communicate. I'm highly impressed with the quality of the service provided.

That tamil lady who works in the office think she is the american ambassador in there.very rude for people.Cant even ask a question she getting triggered and shouting.Other people are really nice to vissa applicants.But that lady should treat to people nicely

A real scam house. You had to pay the visa fee upfront, had to wait days and weeks infront of your PC to get an appointment, still you can't get it before the deadline, and you won't get the refund as well. Simple as that.

Staff is very friendly I must say, the very first time I went to get the visa due to an accident I got few hours late yet the lovely people let me in, the staff inside are absolutely wonderful people

Security of the place prevents staff from making it a better experience. People have to stand in a queue in the hot sun for hours. Typical US behavior. "Since you're not me, I don't care about you"

They refused to grant a P3 visa (approved by USCIS) to our artist. They ruin our events. People think that we are not serious while the US Consulates are the ones causing our failure
