I originally posted this review on Yelp - reposting it here to boost visibility for rat owners who might be considering All Pets. At this time, fellow rat keepers tell me that All Pets has, if anything, declined in its quality of care since I last visited them. I have a lot of compassion for vets and hate leaving negative reviews, but I still cry for my lost pets every day and I've decided maybe this review will at least help someone else. In September 2021 a gravely serious illness befell my pet rats. I'm an experienced rat keeper and I knew right away it was something unusual, likely (sadly) brought in by recent accidental contact with other rats. They developed severe pneumonia that wasn't responding to standard care. Their symptoms perfectly matched Sendai Virus (a highly contagious and often fatal illness). I placed an emergency appointment at All Pets, where I had received good care before, and brought in my two sickest rats. After I was already there, I was told I would be charged for 2 emergency appointments. The vet barely looked at either rat & was cold and dismissive of my concerns, claiming this was just a common respiratory illness (mycoplasma, which virtually all pet rats carry). I was chastised for administering emergency standard treatment on my own... then prescribed duplicate medication (with dosage info for only 1 rat) & told to continue with a less aggressive form of treatment than I'd already been doing. Which I had already done, and which already hadn't worked. I requested a test for Sendai. I requested antibiotic injections, oxygen therapy, or anything to boost their chances of survival. I was refused. The vet didn't seem to care at all. The visit took about 20 minutes. To add insult to injury, I was charged almost $500 for this visit. Both rats died a few days later despite my round the clock care. I took one of the remaining rats - also dying - to another emergency vet. Despite offering all the treatments All Pets refused, they were unable to save him, but they were horrified when I told him of the treatment my rats had received at All Pets. The vet said this was the worst rodent illness she'd seen in 20 years of working with rats and couldn't believe anyone could mistake it for mycoplasma. She felt the care I'd been offering before visiting All Pets was BETTER than what they had recommended. My little friend's body was sent out for testing, and - lo and behold - he had Sendai Virus. All Pets may not have been able to save my rats due to their severe illness, but there was no reason to gaslight me & ignore my concerns. There was no reason to price gouge me for nonexistent care. I left All Pets feeling like my family was completely alone, with no added tools to comfort or help my tiny friends. I have since started seeing another vet who takes the time to listen to me, respects my knowledge of my own pets, and actually seems to love working with my rat family.

UPDATE: I went back a second time because it is just so close and I had to get my dog's shots and tests updated before a big move. Vast improvement! I went to Dr. Johnson, and he deserves 5-stars! Very understanding of my financial situation. Explained all potential options for my dog's conditions (both expensive and presently realistic), and he was not pushy about adding anything extra. Only moving it up to 3-stars (from 1-star) due to the negative experience the first time I went. That review is still below. FIRST TRIP'S REVIEW Staff was friendly, but that is really the only good thing I have to say. I waited to post this review because I had to return today for a booster shot, but on August 1, 2017, knowing that I am on a college student budget, Dr. Gilbert convinced me that my dog needed extra supplements (which are not FDA approved) for her hips and knees without disclosing the cost. They ended up being ridiculously expensive. I sent an email to air my concern Upon researching the products at home, I realized not only that one is not even made for hips and joints (but for skin and fur), but additionally, the vet had charged a 70% markup from the retail cost of the products. In a phone conversation, the vet simply said she had no control over the price and that I was free to purchase the supplements elsewhere in the future. At this point, while taking these supplements (which cost me well over $100), my dog has shown no significant improvement. On the same visit, the vet tried to push the need for my dog to have dental work done (my dog has stubs for teeth, and has for the past couple of years) insisting that a root canal may be the best option for her well being...out of pocket, that would cost well over $2000 (did I mention I am clearly a broke college student?) At the end of my first appointment, I scheduled my follow up for the booster. First, I was given the wrong timeframe for when the shot should be given, and had to reschedule my appointment accordingly. The day before my scheduled appointment, I recieved a call to confirm my appointment, but they had me put down for 2 hours earlier than the time I scheduled weeks in advance. Due to conflict, I had to move to a later time. When I came in for an appointment that should have taken all of 15 minutes, I sat in the waiting room for about a half our until everyone else had left and they finally realized that after check-in, no one came to take my dog back for her pre-scheduled booster shot... I can say with certainty that I will not be returning. They are very disorganized, and I can no longer trust that their suggestions are for my dogs well being, but rather for their own profit. I live within walking distance, but I would rather travel on public transportation with my dog to a different vet than deal with their shenanigans again.

Hello all! I have a black-hooded domestic rat named FuFoo and since she was a wee babe she has had on going respitory infections. Her latest bout came on quickly and I needed to take her in for meds and a professional opinion without waiting for an appointment. I was unhappy with her usual vet (whom shall remain nameless) who upon her last treatment roughly 6-7 months ago, suggested I put her down. Needless to say, I did not heed his "professional" opinion and instead opted to care for her with medication and three steam breathing treatments per day. She recovered nicely going back to her normal sweet and affectionate self. Fast forward present day... Instead of finding a new vet directly after her last illness, I waited allowing work and everyday life get in my way. However, in a way I'm glad I did as I found Dr. Elizabeth Gilbert at All Pets! I walked in without calling first at around 4-4:30 PM on a Wednesday hoping they would see us. The girls at the desk were extremely sweet and helpful, going above their required duties to get FuFoo seen by a vet that day. They were even able to do so without charging me an emergency exam fee!!! About 20 minutes later FuFoo and I were in our own room awaiting her check up and we didn't wait long! About 10 minutes later Dr. Gilbert came in and gave FuFoo a thorough exam, answered all my questions, asked me a wealth of questions, prescribed her two medications and went over how and when to administer them and what to expect. She put my mind to rest assuring me if I didn't see her responding within a few days to bring her back in and she would prescribe her another medication and she would do everything she can do to help FuFoo. All Pets was clean and sanitary, the receptionists were all cheerful and more than helpful and Dr. Gilbert was amazing!! I will definitely go back for all my vetenary needs in the future and I highly recomend them to all my friends and family! Thank you All Pets!

Although today was incredibly sad as we said good-bye to our precious Xoxo, Dr. Bar and her team made the experience as gentle and loving as it possibly could be. Dr. Bar treated us like we were the only patients she had this morning, and more importantly, she treated Xoxo as she always does, with genuine tenderness and concern. Not only did Dr. Bar give us her full attention, Josie also came to share memories of Xoxo and to extend her condolences and hugs to us. (In fact every staff member we encountered this morning, was exceedingly kind and understanding.) While saying goodbye to such an amazing 16 year-old family member is never easy, being in the gentle, capable care of Dr. Bar and the amazing staff helped us get through the experience knowing we did the best thing for Xoxo allowing her to have a beautiful and dignified end of life. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. 2014 We moved from the peninsula after going to Adobe Veterinary Clinic in Los Altos for almost 30 years and several beloved pets. When we first got to SF we still took our beloved Chihuahua down to Adobe because we didn't think we could find the level of care we received at Adobe. Finally, after stellar recommendations from family and friends, we decided to try All Pets. We couldn't be happier! Not only is the medical care top notch in every way but the doctors and staff are responsive, caring and just honestly nice people. We couldn't be happier and feel the pricing is more than fair. (less than we used to pay at Adobe for similar tests, etc.)

Great service but had terrible experience. I had my dog vaccinated here for multiple things, including rabies. I got a call 2 months after the vaccinations telling me they injected him with an expired rabies vaccine and just so happen to catch it (I was not the only patient affected). I had to get him revaccinated the next day. Only gave us a refund on the original rabies vaccine (and not even the cost of the checkup) when I specifically asked them for it due to the ridiculousness of this situation. The 3 things that made me very upset about this: 1. My dog went for 2 months without rabies protection. He could have caught rabies during that time which meant he would have had to be put down + my family could have been bitten/given rabies. This is especially problematic because we travel often to Latin America where rabies can be a real issue. 2. No one likes having random stuff injected in their dogs. 3. I had to take extra time out of my weekend to bring him in. The kicker is after mentioning the 3 above reasons why this was terrible to the person at All Pets, their response was, and I quote, "all hospital make mistakes and we're owning up to ours". Yes, all hospitals do make mistakes, that's why there are medical malpractice lawsuits.

The people here are incredibly nice, but their failure to communicate with their clients is unforgivable. I’ve been coming here for years, but I’ve had enough. My dog went in for surgery earlier this month expecting the same vet we’ve been going to, but when I dropped my dog off they told me it was going to be a different vet I’d never met, because my vet was sick. Their response: “no one called you to let you know? So weird!!!!!” That easily could’ve been a one-time fluke, but it was merely the cherry on top: Additionally... 1. No appointment confirmations via email or phone. (This is a recurring issue) 2. No call the day before surgery to remind pet owners about do’s and don’ts (Vet had mentioned this is a routine practice. It’s not) 3. Pre-surgery I signed paperwork asking to be emailed copies of surgery materials (radiographs taken while my dog was under anesthesia). Never received. There are a few other things that happened, but are more specific to my dog’s situation. Again, these people are so nice, but they don’t have it together. Going to find a new vet from here forward. Hopefully my case is the exception and not the norm.

Competent and nice staff and docs, but ridiculously expensive. The doctors perform an exam each time you visit, even though if you just come in for a nail trim or vaccinations. When I requested a health certificate to take my dog to Germany, they charged $330 plus the exam ($70)- to complete a document of two pages and 6 fields (my address, my dogs microchip information, and the clinic information). When I asked about the costs, they told me that they had to do research and don’t issue these international health certificates very often. I am not a vet or vet assistant and could have completed this document in under 10 min.; also I sent the document to them before the appointment. In addition, they wrote the wrong date for my dog’s microchip implantation, causing me massive problems to get the health certificate endorsed at APHIS. I don’t mind paying for competent vet services and exams if needed, but I absolutely don’t like being overcharged. VERY disappointing experience.

We've been taking our rabbit here for checkups, illnesses, and grooming needs since 2007, so we've seen all three rabbit vets and received wonderful care from each doctor. Be warned that diagnostic and bloodwork tests are expensive, but, pets are a luxury. The doctors always returned our phone calls to answer our questions thoroughly - sometimes spending as long as 10 minutes, which is really helpful because making rabbits travel to the vet is extremely stressful for them. Our rabbit lived for a good 10 long years and unfortunately passed away at the vet office (unrecoverable stroke). The doctor was completely upfront and honest on the diagnosis. The entire office was helpful and sympathetic - they felt the loss, too. The staff was professional in letting us know the options and giving us as much time and privacy to say goodbye.

This review is for Dr. Elizabeth Gilbert - she's so fantastic! My cat was recently diagnosed with HCM and Dr. Gilbert was super helpful in explaining what that means and what the next steps are. We needed to see a cardiologist next, but I could not get an appointment until 2-3 months later and Dr. Gilbert offered to help me with any referrals or talk to any of the cardiologists I had called to see if we could get a sooner appointment since the results of his bloodwork were pretty alarming. She reached out to all the places I had called and was able to find me a cancellation within the next week or so with a great cardiologist and I was able to snag the appointment! She's so helpful, communicative/responsive, and knowledgeable and I really felt like she went above and beyond to provide great care to me and my cat.

  • Arman

Yikes. Service has gone downhill majorly and cost has gone up. The renowned staff that made this place incredible all left, and patients weren't notified. The exam rooms were water damaged, filthy and stripped for parts on my visit. When presented with the estimated cost, a bunch of items were tacked on which weren't discussed with me. The vet that finally saw my dog after a 1hr 20min wait (beyond our appointment time) then fed my dog a handful of marshmallows without asking me, like what the heck? Absolutely absurd conduct and not okay. A vet of all people should check if it's ok to feed someone's dog something. Bizarre, expensive, slow, and genuinely not the standard of care this place used to uphold. After 5 years of taking my pup here, we won't be back.

  • Molly Cogan

My dog had to have surgery to remove a mammary gland, and several unrelated cysts. She also needed to have her teeth cleaned. Sadly the estimate came in between $3400-$3700. Due to financial limitations, I chose to call my former vet in Phoenix and drove 12 hours south to have the surgery done there. I had signed up for the insurance program there, which included teeth cleaning, anesthesia for the cleaning and a regular exam. I paid an additional $1,500 for pre-surgical blood work, chest xrays and surgery. Bella rested in the hotel after surgery, and I gently drove back to San Francisco, via a 2-day stop to rest a bit more in San Diego. I paid less than half the cost on surgery in Phoenix, and took a friend with me to enjoy a couple days R&R instead.

I am proud, very protective, obsessive bunny mommy and over the 10 years I have lived in SF, the professional, incredible, kind, loving, amazing staff of All Pets have made every single appt with my bunnies, even in my saddest moments of losing one of my fur babies, the absolute best. Their compassion, connection and love is beyond compare. If you are seeking the best care for your furry or feathered friend, All Pets Hospital is most amazing place for all the types of care and every type of animal friend. A special note of gratitude to Dr. Barr and Olivia who have been unendingly there for me & my buns over the years and have made my experience absolutely beautiful in every way! THANK YOU!

  • Michelle Asamoah

Absolutely love my vet at this place but the procedures they have make it an unenjoyable experience. I understand covid has changed a lot but they don’t provide chairs outside so u have to stand. Then you call the front desk which don’t pick up even though u can see them thru the window. They were also 20 mins late for my appointment so I had to stand outside for 20 mins in the wind with no one picking up the phone. When I caught a nurse coming outside and I let her know she said I should just keep calling. When my dog finally got called in I let the nurse know to schedule the appointments later if they’re that busy she just chuckled and said okay. Unsure if I’ll be back.

  • Brad Maestas

I had a fabulous experience here this morning. The front staff was super nice and chatty and was very efficient checking us in. My bearded dragon Didymus and I were quickly shown a room and visited by a doctor. They had a heating pad for him which was a nice touch. My beardie was given a gentle and thorough exam and was ultimately prescribed some superfood to bring up his appetite. The initial exam price was given over the phone and all subsequent charges were discussed and agreed upon beforehand. Very professional. I couldn't recommend them more highly.

  • Nathan Preslar

The staff at All Pets is amazing! I recently got a puppy and I really cannot say enough about how helpful they've all been. Due to Covid it was slightly difficult to find a general practitioner that was taking new patients. Fortunately they've worked out a process where you wait in your car while they take your pet in and do the exam. All of the staff was very helpful and understanding with my questions. Dr Gilbert spent almost 40 mins going over questions and tips. She even text me on a Sat morning to give me test results. We've found our vet.

  • Jackie Bow

“Hello, I called the hospital last Wednesday to make an appointment for my dog. The receptionist had to tell me that all the doctors were leaving at the end of the week for another hospital in SF and there would be no one to see my dog. That they were trying to find replacement staff but it wasn’t looking good. Having to find out this way that my veterinarian (Dr. Gilbert) has left - no email, no phone call (still) and I have a dental cleaning I have been waiting 6 months for, and have been paying in to a plan for - is unacceptable.”

  • Sonya Philip

Dr. Herman is the kindest and most capable veterinarian it has been our pleasure to meet. We started going to All Pets for care of a hamster and other small animals, but soon brought our other pets there too. We recently had to make the difficult decision to put our dog to sleep and the way the office staff and Dr. Herman handled the entire procedure from start to finish, so much kindness and respect, made it better. I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. If you want top notch care for your pet, take them to All Pets Hospital.

  • Ryan Klayman

I recently had to bring my 17-year old cat in for end-of-life service. It was a devastating time for my partner and I, and VCA staff members were highly attentive, sensitive, and nurturing from the first call to the last moments. They gave us all the information we needed, gave us space and options to think about what we wanted to do to help our furry family member, and were able to provide emergency care on short notice. I will plan on bringing all my future pets to them! Their prices are reasonable as well. Thank you VCA!

  • Debbie Ripley

My guinea pig, Fifi, a two-pound female had ovarian cysts which required surgery. I didn't think Fifi would survive the whole ordeal, but with veterinarian, Dr. Gillespie, she was the best. Fifi's surgery was on Feb. 1st and she has recovered remarkably. I just want to thank Dr. Gillespie and staff for such a wonderful job. I also appreciated the phone calls after her surgery from Dr. Gillespie, Cat and the rest of the staff. Fifi is back to her active and adorable self. Thank you again for everything!

  • Jen Davidson

Caring, friendly, knowledgeable staff. Parking is a challenge with only 3 spaces so I usually Uber or Lyft. There are only a couple of treatment rooms so people get their final instructions in the waiting room, which can be loud and no privacy. They are not inexpensive, but on-par with San Francisco pricing. Good hours & availability. I have difficulty with their online booking system so usually call for appointments. Dr. Herman has provided extra-caring service beyond the usual.

  • Tiffany Oda

It's always hard with vets because, like mechanics, you never know if they're just making stuff up to charge you more. But All Pets seems okay, staff is friendly enough. We've been bringing my dog there for a few years now. They're a little hard to get appointments in a timely manner, so they're good for check ups but not so good for more urgent manners. They do also always call the day after a check up or procedure to see how your pet is doing, which I do appreciate.

  • Suzanne Castillo

It seems like there is only one vet here and she is clearly over worked and I feel great sympathy for her so its the corporate leadership that I am going to complain about. I have been here for over 1.5 hrs for my appointment and the cost is astronomical. I have to skip some of my dogs treatment because the estimate is insanely high. Thousands of dollars! I miss the old All Pets Hospital that I have been going to for probably 10 years.

  • Wanda Berger

WOW!! I love ALL PETS. My dog loves them though, and that's what REALLY matters isn't it?. I NEVER felt like the doctor was ACTING as if he cared. I honestly believe that he did. The staff was great as well. They followed up, I could not believe it. The doctor phoned me @a week later just to see how she was. I mean .....wow. That's un- heard of. My dog and I are hooked we will be faithful clients until the wheels fall off.

  • Mel Tan

I called first thing in the morning as my pet was sick and needed to see a vet ASAP. I was able to get an early slot over the phone after someone else cancelled. Dr Gilbert took time to read our dog’s medical history ( you’ll be surprised how many doctors skip this) and checked olive very thoroughly and gently. Staff were friendly and fast. I received the meds quickly too. Cost of meds were pretty standard for SF prices.

  • Caitlin Zuerker Burton

We love Dr. Gilbert and all the staff here! Our puppy has had quite a few ongoing health issues since we got her and they’ve taken such great care of her. They are always kind, responsive, helpful, and talk through all your concerns without making you feel rushed. I also appreciate that they follow up the next day after they see her to make sure she’s doing ok. Would highly recommend if you’re looking for a vet.

  • Randy FLY WSLADS “Fly” Arevalo

I originally posted out of stress about the inability to find a vet for my sick friend. Once I persevered got an appointment with VCA, I am impressed and grateful for the service we received which continues with follow up text messages inquiring about my little guys health. They rock and were a life saver in my opinion. Also my pocket book was very satisfied. I RECOMMEND VCA 100%

  • Dave M

We love our vet, Dr. Elizabeth Gilbert, even though we've never met in person, only over the phone. So 5 stars for her, but 3 stars for how long it takes to get through for phone consultation or making an appointment. So many pets, I guess. Averages out to 4 stars as we feel like our pup is getting decent care, even if it takes a while...

  • Stephanie Segura

Everyone is very nice and professional. I have a bearded dragon and they treated her with the upmost respect, care, and love. They are reasonable with pricing and recommended treatments. Its been almost a week and my beardie is doing much better. Dr Herman is great and without a doubt, I bringing my beardie only to her from now on.

  • Angela Belluomini

Have been to several Vets in SF and it's been a little hit and miss. Really liked VCA All Pets Hospital. Dr Gilbert was great. Listen to our issues and gave us options. Also, I received a text with my dogs lab results which was new for me. Usually I have to call the vet to follow up. We will be bringing our dog back.

  • RJ Cassidy-Pettit

All Pets has been my veterinary clinic for 25 years now. Never an issue have always taken excellent care of my girls. Other than getting their temperature taken my cats have always enjoyed their visits there. Dr Alix Hermann is the best and has always made us all feel part of a family not just doctor patient.

  • Kristy

Staff is sweet and loves animals. The walls of the exam room are very thin so if you have a nervous animal make sure to comfort them, the sounds of other animals can get loud. The vet is very knowledgeable about rabbits, which can be hard to find. Google can be weird about walking directions- be careful!

  • carolyn

They're not taking new clients, until December! (Too few vets, & too many dogs in the city) I called today. They were very helpful for suggestions on how to treat my dog, tho. And also suggested going out of SF to find a vet. I will definitely keep them in mind, for the future!

  • Kisha Calbert

As always, my dog gets the absolute best care with this organizations vets. All staff are friendly and helpful and you can tell everyone is there for your furry family members. The only thing that stinks is parking. But it's San Fran, so you expect parking to be limited.

  • Fadi Aqillan

The ladies behind the front desk were personable and very courteous. The nurse and doctor were very professional and took care of my cat very quickly and efficiently (she wasn’t happy about being there , so the fact that they made the visit very quick was very helpful)

  • kimia Kamrava

Dr. Rockwell Was so caring. They accepted my chinchilla during emergency near Holidays. When no where accepted her. When every hospital cares more about dogs and cats VCA was really a hospital For all animals. They helped her and check on her days after. Thanks VCA

  • Keiko Mukai

It will be nice if they can place some chairs and shade area outside to make pet owners more comfortable while they are waiting. Also street is super noisy, so even doctor call you for the consultation, it’s hard to listen. If you own a car, it won’t be an issue.

  • Amy Clark

I have been going to All Pets for about 15 years. I have seen three of the doctors, they are all wonderful, skillful and caring, whether it was my rat, my cat, or my dog. They follow up and call you back and in general give excellent care and excellent service.

  • Damien Doser

VCA all pets has been taking care of our one year old aussie mix since we came to the city. They are super responsive and the staff are all incredibly friendly. One drawback is the frequently long wait time for appointments, only speaks to their popularity.

  • Cristy Fizzy

It takes a while to get an appointment for your pet so I recommend calling weeks in advance if trying to schedule just a general checkup. Other than that the service has been excelent so far and they are nice to both my dogs and take great care of them.

  • William Tull

I can only say good things about VCA All Pets. Dr. Gilbert was wonderful and patient, taking the time to walk us through all the details and options. I love that they provide a detailed estimate beforehand as standard practice.

  • Hannah Maverick

VCA is my go-to Vet in San Francisco. They are so great, very friendly, well run, knowledgable, fair & well priced, and easy to contact/make bookings. Never had a bad experience. Highly recommend.

  • Shane Chao

They genuinely care about their patients (and owners). From the front desk staff to the techs, nurses and vets, I always come away appreciative of their service and commitment to healthy animals.

  • John Vanorsdel

This place is totally gone downhill the receptionists are rude, the place is filthy, and it only has interim veterinarians. If you love your animals I recommending not taking them here.

  • Kim Ost

They came recommended by a friend of a friend. I have been very happy with the staff and services here in treating my cats. Pricing is reasonable and I feel like they genuinely care.

  • John Easterday

Definitely the place to go to if you're an animal! It recently helped save a our cat's life! Many thanks to the caring staff, excellent doctors and uber excellent vet techs!

  • Jeffrey Moran

Very personable staff that takes great care of our dog when we visit. There are three parking spots out front, but allow extra time to find parking in case it is full!

Very competent and professional staff. We've been taking our dog here for the past 3+ years. Only downside is that it's a bit pricier than other vets.
