I'll have to wait until I'm calm to go into longer details, but please do your pets a huge favor and just skip this place. As a former zookeeper and Animal Health Tech, I'm disgusted with them from the horrible, unprofessional, ignorant front desk girls (esp Jen) to the revolving door of different vets. Dr. Fong may seem knowledgeable and jovial but he's anything but behind the scenes. I truly believe if I'd switched vets sooner, my dog who had Chronic Kidney Disease (glomerularnephritis/PLN) AND Valvular Heart Disease, wouldn't have ended up at Nor Cal Veterinary on IV fluids for 5dys/4 nites as he fought for his life while in Acute Renal Failure. I now use one of Nor Cal's internists as my regular vet. They're that good. They were able to run much better tests (state of the art equipment unlike Irving), uncover missed diagnoses and correct misdiagnoses and incorrect medications/dosages. Dr. Fong's utter lack of concern/compassion while my dog was hospitalized and after he was home was disturbing. He didn't check on him once. He even thought my dog was still in the ER hospital 3wks after he was home. And Nor Cal had sent all their medical records to him daily. The coffin nail? When it was time to let my little dude go, they were utterly unprofessional and useless and added to the stress immensely. And when he was gone, every vet who'd seen my dog sent condolence cards signed by the staff and one even sent a big white orchid in his memory (he was cream colored). All except Irving Pet. I've tried to sort things out with them/Dr. Fong but got nowhere. But I kept getting reminder postcards and then emails from them instead- who likes being reminded they just lost? I finally began putting my frustrations down in replies to those upsetting emails and I know they read them because they stopped sending me all communications entirely. Even for my cats. But still no apologies or acknowledgement of my dog's passing. They may be affordable compared to other places, but in this case you get less than you pay for in the long run. And I lucked out with having them forever connected to memories of my dog's passing in a very upset, negative way. Dr. Fong doesn't value his clients nor truly care about your pets. He had plenty of people walking in his door and customer retention is something he seems to have absolutely no concern about. I'm just relieved to be away from that place and have a current vet who knows all my dog's issues off the top of her head and hasn't missed a beat in over a year and a half. The friendly office staff is a nice change, too. How that dysfunctional Irving Pet office staff keep their jobs is beyond my comprehension. I've watched multiple walk-ins walk right out just from the front desk attitude.
Summary: We gave our dogs their needed vaccine shots/boosters (Spectra 5, Spectra 9, kennel cough) at home, rather than from Irving Pet Hospital after receiving a $1900+ vet bill (quote) for various health checks, blood work, vaccines/boosters, etc. Irving pet hospital then called us and DROPPED US as patients because the Dr was insulted that we backed out of all the recommendations she made and felt we aren't taking our dogs health seriously. If you don't have the money to pay for a $2K routine visit, you're a bad dog owner and they're going to drop you. They were also kind of enough to remind us in the same conversation that most vets in the area are NOT taking new patients and they provided us an emergency vet hospital as our option. Details: I've been a patient with Irving Pet Hospital for 3+ years. A recent appointment for my 2 dogs (8 yrs old, and 12 weeks old) to get health check, shots/boosters, blood work, ears checked, etc (What I consider a routine appointment) was going to cost $1939. Yes, just under $2K. Definitely shocked us and so we naturally asked what drove the cost up so high. The tech was very nice and explained the costs and repeatedly said "I understand" as we were surprised that the shots for our new puppy summed to be around $700. We ended up asking to just do the health check, ear checks, stool sample which still cost over $800. They provided us with cheaper, more affordable vaccine clinics in the city which will get your animals the shots they need for a better price. We ended up getting our shots from a feed supply store in Half moon bay for a total of $48 dollars and gave them their shots ourselves. I've done this with my current dog for her entire life and my previous vets in Sacramento had no problems with it. I provided the Irving pet hospital with the vaccine dates and pictures, and then a number of days later they called us and basically painted a picture like we don't care about our dogs because we didn't get the full amount of check ups recommended by the doctor. They said the doctor was insulted. Really, we were insulted that they can look you dead in the eyes and think that $2k is normal for a routine visit. What about the fact that maybe some people can't afford such egregious bills and so going a more affordable route is a normal solution. So how do they respond? The dropped us as patients and said that they cannot provide us the care we need going forward, and reminded us that most vets in the area are not taking new patients. It was almost like a smug "oh and good luck finding a new place". So they would rather let the doctors hurt ego and deep pockets take precedence over keeping us as patients and providing care for our dogs. Instead, we have no vet now.
We had multiple horrible experiences with quality of care and administrative staff. The service reeked of neglect (misplaced records, forgotten appointments) and care was borderline malpractice (misdiagnoses, delayed vaccination schedule). We went last year for a wellness visit to establish a new patient relationship and to schedule follow up vaccines. They never asked for previous vet records and never asked us whether he’d been vaccinated, any issues, etc. I proactively sent them our records which they then lost. In our first appt, the vet very callously said “well I’m sure you’re aware, he’s got a heart murmur” which had literally never been diagnosed. When I asked him what to do with that information (follow up with a cardiologist? Medication? Decrease activity?) he was like “oh it’s probably fine” and never followed up. (We ended up getting a cardiologist consult with OakVet and they stated that this heart murmur was misdiagnosed. An additional $800 and extreme anxiety later.) My dog needed vaccines in November, which is reflected on the records I sent to them, and the only reason I remembered to schedule a follow up appt is because our old vet emailed us with a reminder, NOT Irving. I had to call Irving and ask for a tech appt to get vaccines to avoid re-paying a vet exam fee (unnecessary as he’d just been seen). I ended up having to call 4x in a week before my tech appt went through bc the vet kept neglecting to approve it. The soonest tech appt was 3 weeks away which seems egregious. Two other things - when we see our emergency vet, they follow-up with our listed “primary care” vet to let them know our dog had an emergency. Unfortunately, our dog needed to visit the ER recently where he had to get his stomach “pumped.” I know the ER called Irving to inform them of the visit. Our old vet would have called us first thing to see how he was feeling and if everything was ok. Irving not only didn't follow up but didn't even note the visit in his records. Then, we finally went in for our vaccines appointment, they said 3x someone was coming and yet we waited for 30 mins for a vaccine appt and the receptionist said “they forgot, sorry.” The only thing I could think the entire time he was inside was “how can I trust them to give him the right amount of shots or treat him if they can’t even remember that someone is here.” I’m bummed because they came highly recommended and we were hoping it would be a good fit.
BEWARE. Recently, my wife brought our dog into Irving Pet Hospital. They conducted a senior dog panel blood test, which was required prior to surgery, and prescribed medication to help with inflammation/pain. They said to not give him the medication until the test results had come back. The next day, they had called to say the results had come back and to begin administering the medication daily. Due to the expense of the surgery, my wife looked for a second opinion. At clinic #2, they reviewed the results from Irving Pet Hospital and determined that our dog's kidneys were not currently healthy enough for surgery and that the medication prescribed is actually going to damage his kidneys more. When Irving Pet Hospital was questioned about this information received from clinic #2, they said they would call me back after discussing the test results. When they called back, they said that they had compared results with clinic #2 and determined that there were minimal changes to the results and that the medication should now be given as needed. The problem is clinic #2 never conducted a blood test, they were going off the results from Irving Pet Hospital, so there were no results to compare between the two clinics. Irving Pet Hospital knew there could be an issue with prescribing the medication, which is why they said to wait for the results. I believe they never looked at the results and recommended giving the medication anyway. When confronted by a clinics' second opinion, instead of coming clean, they tried to make it seem as if they compared multiple blood tests and the medicine prescription should be changed. They still recommended continuing with the surgery, after knowing and confirming that clinic #2 said that surgery should not happen until after a kidney flush, and that is only if the blood test after the flush comes back with better results. Irving Pet Hospital was negligent in reading their own test results. Why should someone trust the life of their Pet in the hands of a clinic with such disregard? At clinic #2, the cost of the kidney flush with the following surgery was more than $1000 cheaper. Do you due diligence, if you go to Irving Pet Hospital, get a second opinion. Your pets' health may depend on it.
Before I begin, this review is NOT for veterinary care. Both vets that I have spoken to have seemed kind, knowledgeable, and answer all of my questions. Their care is why I am giving 3 stars to this clinic instead of lower - I am hopeful they will improve once they end curbside policy. I have a rescue dog, and he is sometimes anxious in new situations. I discussed this with receptionist when booking appointment but was told this was an absolutely inflexible policy. I offered to wear an N95, etc, but they have recently had employees who contracted Covid so they have initiated their own lockdown. I wish I had realized this updated policy sooner, but they had sent an email out several months ago saying that they had returned to in person service! Yay! By the time I reached out to book his appointment, and learned of the updated policy, it was too late for me to book an appointment with a new vet because he needed his shots updated. That part is on me, I should not have procrastinated. However, we had gone to this clinic during peak Covid when they were also doing curbside and my dog did well so I wasn't too worried. I got a second call while waiting that my dog was very scared and anxious and they were unsure if they could complete procedure (anal gland expression). Since I was right outside, I offered to come in, but I was still not allowed in. Instead, I was offered sedatives for my dog for future curbside appointments. I tried to ask the technician when she brought my shaking, hyperventilating dog outside, if I could possibly just come in next time to help with his anxiety, but she interrupted me saying "curbside only", and walked back inside. Another technician came back out with the prescribed sedatives "for next time" and my bill. Again, i have no doubts as to the quality of the veterinary care, several of my coworkers recommended them pre-pandemic, and would still continue to come here because I do like the vets, but the way that they treat anxious dogs is inexcusable and I'll unfortunately have to go somewhere else if they can't end curbside service :(
TL:DR I suspect Irving Pet Hospital of veterinary malpractice, potential cruelty and negligence with respect to my animals and generally unconscionable customer service. To start with the big stuff, my dog was diagnosed with what is essentially a herniated disk in his lower back. It turned out that not only was his lower back herniated, but so was his upper neck. Dr. Tumang should've figured this out, because I tried to explain to him that my dog yelped when he leaned down to get food - obvious right? Well unfortunately, Dr. Tumang was so focused on talking over me and ending the conversation that we didn't get there and we were unable to figure out what was really going on. My dog remained in crippling pain so I eventually brought him back. Dr. Lau finally caught the issue, but my dog seemed in worse shape after the visit then he did before. I don't know what went on during the visit, because apparently veterinarians need stricter COVID protocols than human doctors, gyms, grocery stores and virtually any other business in the world. While I won't be going back to IPH due to the veterinary malpractice and suspected cruelty to animals, what really put me over the edge is just the lack of customer service and bedside manner. It is a massive struggle to make it to the vet with my job, but I took time off and got a driver to take me there. The uber driver caused me to be late, and when I was 2 minutes away from the hospital, they called and told me they had to cancel. God forbid you waste any of their time. I look forward to never visiting IPH again, my pets will be better for it.
This place is falling apart and the staff have become less helpful as time goes by (Jenny to be specific in one of the ocasions). I started many years ago when Dr. Fong had taken over the practice. I do not recommend this place to anyone now the way it is run. First when my daughter started caring for my dog they did not get my authorization to switch the medical record to her name. When I got my dog back to care for they wanted authorization from my daughter to add my name. What a joke. They also did not carry the multi topical flee/heart worm medication and where not helpful at all for me to get it through on line. Did not want to send the prescription to on the line store,"because our policy does not let us". and took them over a week to get met the prescription mailed to me in which took another week to send it our. They did not want to email it to me. Are you kidding me? Get out of the stone age for heaven sake. Lastly, although my dog had hurt her leg, they were not willing to open an appointment on the day because "we are so busy" and don't have time. Which then I took her to the emergency clinic on the 9th ave. After wards days later, when I took my dog to them, they could not get her records from the emergency care. Made me work several hours on the phone to figure out oh yes, they had the dog again under my daughters' married name.... and did not give my name to the clinic to get her records. What a good place going to waist... I will be seeking a new vet and will be also seeking legal advice.
Really great pet hospital. I'm a Rover pet sitter and became very concerned after the pets I was watching wouldn't eat for two days and the cat never came out from under the bed. Their regular vet is at the Irving Pet Hospital, so I gave them a call and explained what was going on. They booked me in for an appointment that afternoon, did blood work and took x rays to make sure the kitty hadn't swallowed any foreign objects. After clearing everything, they gave him some fluids and medication for anxiety and to stimulate his appetite. The vet thoroughly explained to me how to administer the medication and they were able to invoice the owner through email. I brought home a totally different (temperament wise) cat. Max drank some water when he got home and finally let me pet him. He ate all his dinner in one sitting that night and I could not get him off my lap willingly. It was such a relief. If that wasn't enough, the vet who treated Max called my cell phone on her day off (the next day) to check on him and make sure he was eating and using the litter box. After giving her the good news, she told me I could scale back his medication in a day as long as he's still eating and being social. I cannot recommend this vet more, especially as a pet sitter.
I have been taking my pets to Irving street pet hospital since 1990. You read that right--not a typo. I rescued a little canary from a tenant's apartment that was being neglected after the tenant died and his girlfriend and his family were fighting over the rights to what was in the apartment. I brought him to my office and fed him, and loved him, and eventually both sides agreed they didn't want the little guy, and I could bring him home. Back then, Dr. Penney took fabulous care of him, and when he was sick, made him well. I later rescued an Akita mix from the humane society, and for 16 years, Irving street took such marvelous care. When I say marvelous, I mean MARVELOUS--I'm a critical care nurse (people) and they were spot on with everything, and treated my four-legged son as if he were a two-legged human boy. They respected him and us, and my advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology in general and always spoke to me like a colleague--with all the answers I was looking for. I can't imagine ever bringing my current 4-legged boy anywhere else. These guys give better care than some hospitals I've worked in give to their people patients. Nuff said. you will NEVER find a better vet.
12/22 I’m updating my review to add that since the renovation, I am extremely pleased that they have a separate area for cats now. It’s in the new part of the practice and it is superb. No waiting room. You are brought directly into the exam room. It’s very calm and quiet. No barking dogs. This helps my anxiety as well as my cats. Additionally, I went to their grand opening tour and saw behind the scenes. It’s really something special. Thank you Dr. Fong, for having such great vision. I’ve been with Irving Pet Hospital since 2002 and it just keeps getting better. I’ve always loved Dr. Fong, but he has brought some wonderful veterinarians into his fold. And now they’ve expanded into a new building AND added Urgent Care. I’ve got four, somewhat exotic, cats. I’m super picky about the care they receive, and I have my opinions about how and why treatments are done. And I’m the nerd that wants to keep records of all diagnostics done. I’ve always been treated very respectfully, and made to feel like my kitties are very special. I can’t say enough about how much I love this place. I give them two thumbs up!
Every single person I interacted with was so nice! And they took good care of both of my kitties on separate days. I also felt like they wanted to do the best for them both, maybe even erring on the safe side to make sure everything was covered. Plus, a friend who used to live the neighborhood says they're great, so at least I know someone else liked them, too. Definitely a good place to go. ETA: My only issue is that Irving doesn't work with online pharmacists, which makes it incredibly difficult to get prescriptions filled. One has to get a written prescription, then send it in to the online pharmacy, delaying delivery and start of giving meds. A particular prescription from Irving would cost $56 while the same (plus one more pill) through Chewy would be $22. Huge difference. Another prescription would be $26 vs. $6. Up to 75% lower pricing really helps a lot, especially when the cost of taking an animal to the vet is already high. We do what we have to for our animals, but it would be nice if we could get a break somewhere along the line.
The staff at Irving Pet Hospital is remarkable, and I don't say that lightly, having experience with other practices in the area. The vets who care for my cats are excellent (primarily Dr. Jones, but Dr. Fong as well, and others consultatively); Really smart and mindful, diligent, compassionate with amazing follow up, and a collaborative approach. They also translate medical terminology and concepts really well! The nursing staff is so wonderful; incredibly caring, thorough, and thoughtful. When one of my cats had to go in for large intake of fluid over a period of days a few months ago, I learned that the nurses took turns holding him, making sure he had a lot of attention. Incredibly heartening during a very difficult time. The front desk staff is fantastic; so nice, always really helpful, and on top of everything, even during hectic times. I'm extremely appreciative for every aspect of this practice, all of the wonderful people who make it work. I highly recommend this veterinary group!
I brought our two year old Great Dane to Dr. Fong for a second opinion. I had made an appointment and was actually early by quite a bit. The clinic accommodated me with an appointment so I would not have to hang around for hours, since I am from the east bay. What I noticed is that the other clients came in and were ushered in and out in such an organized manner that it was nice to know that if I was on the schedule it would be a smooth experience. That is worth a lot in anyone's busy schedule. As for the second opinion, my wife and I were so impressed, who was on a cell phone interacting within the consult, that we switched vets on the spot. Connecting with a Dr. who also was a Great Dane owner was a lucky stroke and great for us. Hercules, our two year old, is number four of our families line of six Danes. Our son has a puppy Odesius (Ody for short) and Hercules has a eight month old buddy at home, Artimus (Moose for short) also a Dane. We are all members of the Irving pet Clinic.
I just moved here from out of town and didn't have a local primary vet. Most of the vet places I called only had availability 3-4 months out. My frenchie had a corneal ulcer that needed immediate attention. Luckily, this place was close by to the Richmond and had urgent care availability. I hopped into a Lyft, and was seen within 20 minutes of showing up (probably not normal). They took very good care of my fur-baby and I could tell when we left that she was very comfortable around the staff. The clinic doesn't allow people inside their space, so you'll need to wait outside, in your car or be close-by. I went and got a couple of drinks at the nearby bar, Sage and Drifter (also super friendly staff), and even bought the clinic team a few rounds for after work (no doubt they are on their feet all day). Overall, really impressed with the quality of care from here and the vet/doc. Very pleasant, informative and communicative staff.
I really can't say enough good things about this place. We recently switched vets, and from the very first phone call with Irving Pet Hospital, we knew we had called the right place. It is so obvious that they deeply care about your animal, and they really go above and beyond to take care of you. Our pup had a few issues that had been lingering for a couple of weeks, and Irving Pet Hospital called us to come in for an appointment that someone had cancelled, and charged us the normal rate (not an urgent care appointment or anything like that). In less than 24 hours, our dog was totally back to normal. The treatment and care was personalized, and really made us feel right at home. We trust them entirely. Dr. Newhouse is our vet and she is just fantastic. Really sweet and clearly very knowledgeable! Every other employee is equally great. They even emailed us after hours (9pm!) when we had a question. This place is the best :)
I absolutely love Iriving Pet Hospital! Everyone there, from the vets to the techs to the staff behind the desk, is caring, kind and concerned for your pet. But especially Dr. Fong! He is the ulitmate BEST! I used to live close to Irving but about 12 years ago moved to Daly City. I continue using Irving even though I have to travel about half an hour to get there just because I know I am receiving the best quality care anywhere. I also love that they tell you straight up the situation and all your options possible, from the most expensive to the least and allow you to make a choice. Then they support you for the choice you made. They totally understand you love your pet and will do anything to save it or help it but life can bring up difficult decisions. I have had some difficult decisions to make over the years and I am so thankful that Irving was my veterinary hospital. You can't go wrong with this hospital!
The people here are heartless. They cancelled on me because I was 10 minutes late upon arrival, then rescheduled and cancelled on me again because I voiced my feelings of disappointment and frustration with my experience. Zero communication that there was a policy for a 10 min or F U policy. It was my first appointment and NEVER told in any communication about their policy. Also, accidents happen with a brand new puppy, and I was trying to get a fresh sample for them bc he had to poo! That is the only reason I was tardy. It's impossible to book anywhere right now bc of the pandemic and they acknowledged this and still cancelled on me twice. Such a total lack of empathy! DO NOT GO HERE! Also the lady from Jersey, what a complete toxic woman. I'll spare the details, but it was incredibly unpleasant. No people skills. Must be why these folks landed in the industry.
We’ve had a great experience every time. Not only are they great at accommodating our anxious and reactive pup, but they also don’t make us feel bad about it (and they still tell us how sweet and great he is). Additionally, I can tell how good the staff is at their ability to consider diverse etiologies instead of just treating the symptoms. It’s easy to brush things off as anxiety or behavioral, but they make sure to consider if these are neuro related, dietary, toxins, etc. I always appreciate how they listen to all of my concerns and never make me feel like I am overreacting about something even minor. Great communication, empathy and medical knowledge. It’s hard to trust someone with your fur baby, but I can tell they are very good at what they do and it’s hard to express just how much it means to know your baby is being taken care of to the fullest extent.
Meh. In my experience they’re pretty overwhelmed. They were better when we first started going. They’re very nice but operationally they slip up now. You have to call months ahead to get an appointment. You can rarely get in for a sick visit. They will tell you they’ll call you back and they’ll forget. They’ll tell you to be there at 7:45am to drop your pet off for a scheduled surgery and make you wait in your car with your pet for 45 mins. They also seem to over prescribe IMO, which both costs more money and gives your pet more drugs (for example injecting anti nausea drugs when my dog wasn’t nauseous or receiving another drug). Their text messaging system is nice, but I think it doesn’t really work well anymore since they’re overwhelmed.
We’ve been taking our dogs here for over a dozen years. It really is a very well managed and considerate practice. The tech and nursing staff members are courteous, professional and great with the animals. The vets are knowledgable and very communicative. They are pet and owner focused in all the care they give. The practice also has a web / phone system to help keep up with appointments, immunizations, and messages. Overall, I feel like the connection we have with Dr Fong and his practice is so fundamental to the what we enjoy about working with them. This really has shown during the past year with the pandemic and how hard they worked to keep services available while keeping staff and customers safe! Great general practice for our dogs!
My husband and I just relocated into the city from Marin and hadn't found a veterinary yet for our two Boston Terriers. We had an unexpected, last minute vaccination need before a weekend away and we called Irving Pet Hospital to see if they could fit us in. They were extremely friendly and accommodating. The whole experience with them was a pleasure - from the front desk receptionists to the doctor who examined our two dogs to the check out process. The whole staff is gaga for animals and it shows. They showered our pets with love and affection and the doctor even called to follow up and make sure they were doing okay after their shots. We will definitely be going back! We highly recommend them!!
I adopted my foster dog last year and needed a vet in the hood after she was attacked by another dog at Ocean Beach. Irving Pet Hospital was able to examine her immediately. She needed several stitches and follow-up care. They were professional, responsive and affordable. Just had an annual check up with Dr. Bettada. Due to Covid clients drop off the pet and wait in designated parking spaces outside the clinic. The Dr. called during the examination to discuss my pet's health. It was a seamless process. They are excellent at dealing with my dog and her extreme anxiety. I would recommend this vet practice and am thankful they can look after my fur baby.
We love Irving Pet Hospital. We love Dr. Fong and Irving Pet staff. Dr. Fong is so kind and caring. He takes time to discuss my dogs visit and listens respectfully and responds to all my questions. The Irving Pet team is also very kind and respectful. So very happy to find this place and have good care for my dog. Thank you Irving Pet Hospital for showing up and providing care to our beloved pets during this pandemic. You are true heroes. Please stay safe and healthy. I look forward to going inside to meet the staff once the pandemic is over or under better control. Bonus - lots of good restaurants nearby to pick up a takeout after vet visit.
We love having our two cats be cared for at Irving Pet Hospital! Everyone there is kind, considerate, and professional, and they always have our cats’ best interest in mind. Our cats are indoor only, and they’re scared of anything that isn’t home, but the people at Irving Pet Hospital always find a way to calm down our cats, keep them up to date with shots, and treat them with the most kindness and respect. They even gave our two cats catnip lollipops for behaving well! If the world was filled with more people like the kind at Irving Pet Hospital, I’m convinced we’d have world peace. Thank you so much for always being so good to our kitties!
We are big fans of Dr. Fong and Irving Pet Hospital! Our rescue dog is very fearful, but Dr. Fong has been great at handling him. Dr. Fong is kind, patient, and knowledgeable. He has a jolly attitude and makes the vet process fun. We appreciate his thoroughness with the annual check ups. When we encountered a possible health issue, Dr. Fong laid out multiple options, gave the pros/cons, and advised what he would do for his dog. Irving Pet Hospital has worked hard to expand their clinic -- so they can have more space and support more animals. We're lucky to have a pet hospital that is so passionate about animals. Keep up the great work!
Irving pet hospital has always been a positive experience. I’ve been taking my dog here for over a year and the level of care is exceptional. I have a nervous dog who is extremely fearful at the vet and have been really pleasantly surprised that all of the vets and techs my dog has seen are willing to spend the extra few minutes giving my dog treats and being calm so he calms down before they examine him. This is not a given with vets and it really is hugely impactful for fearful dogs. I’m always seen quickly whether it’s been for scheduled appointments or walk-in urgent care. Overall would definitely recommend this hospital.
We used this vet for ~1.5yr. Easy to get appointments and everyone was really nice. Dr. Fong was wonderful but we found the other doctor really pushed products and unnecessary medications on us. Every time we got a second opinion the other vet would give us like a $10 treatment that worked rather than the several hundred dollar options at Irving Pet. They often pushed medicine on us before test results came back and when we asked whether we should wait for results to start giving her medication they said we should buy it and take it home just in case she might ever need it in the future. Just an overall icky feeling there.
We are thrilled to have Dr Joe Fong care for our new puppy Great Dane! Dr. Fong is knowledgeable and is good with giant breed dogs and I’m sure he’s also wonderful with any of your pets. He cared for our two other Great Danes back in the ‘90’s when he was at Arguello Pet Hospital. With Covid, he FaceTimed us on our iPhone while we waited in our car. It’s also very convenient in that Irving Pet Hospital has a few dedicated parking spaces for drive up. We highly recommend Dr Fong for your pet’s medical needs. The staff at his office is also very courteous and attentive!!
I brought Patti into urgent care walk-in hours and I was distraught. My senior fur baby had been behaving out of character and I was so worried for her. Even though they were at capacity, they still made an exception and took Patti in for an exam and some tests. I was so relieved and Patti has been doing much better with some meds helping her with her arthritis and pain. I CAN’T THANK IRVING HOSPITAL enough! Everyone from the receptionist to vet techs to the vet who attended to us- everyone was so compassionate and patient with this worried dog mama. I’m so grateful!
Brought my old and tired dog to remove and treat a foxtail. Had him "checked out" and treated. A week later my dog is swarming with fleas . Over the counter treatments did not help. Called clinic back to ask for a prescription to buy flea medicine. Well, they want to do another "wellness check" to make my 16 years old dying dog is ok, something I expect them to do when they treated him in first place as they did charge for it. People there are ok and I am sure just doing their job but their business practice is ridiculous. I'll stay away from this place.
I have my dog as a patient at Irving Pet Hospital. After two yeas I continue to find them customer friendly and professionally skilled in her care. Their office hours are convenient and I have always been accommodated when I needed an appointment--even on short notice. Their follow up after a visit is appropriate and appreciated. The front and back office staff are friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. They also manage the paperwork for my pet insurance promptly. The two vets I see routinely, Drs. Fong and DeVencenzi provide excellent care and advice.
The doctors, nurses, and staff at Irving took care of my baby when she was having a health crisis of uncertain cause. They were kind, compassionate, and communicative about possible explanations for her condition. They gave her a treatment plan that has helped her feel better and ease her most concerning symptoms, they were patient with all my questions, and they followed up with me the night after I took her into urgent care. I am grateful to be able to go to a veterinary team where I can fully trust that they are acting in her best interest.
Everyone at Irving Pet Hospital is friendly, professional, and helpful. My pup gets really nervous at the vet, and they always help her relax and are super gentle with her in the back. I never feel pressured to do any sort of treatment or anything like I've experienced at other vets. I would highly recommend them if you're looking for a new vet. Update: it's been years, and I have nothing but good things to say especially regarding Dr Fong. He is one of the best. Great patient interaction, follows up, and makes you and your pet feel welcome.
Irving Pet is the best! Our dog becomes very anxious as we park in front of any veterinary or pet groomers. Dr. Fong, Dr. Lau, and staff have an excellent handle and gentle approach to set Bubba and his pet parents at ease. We commute from Hayward, so it is not easy to go for emergencies. We've emailed Dr. Fong in the past and he is very quick to respond! He has helped us out in the pinch and referred us to a local vet hospital for emergencies. He's definitely worth the trip. Definitely recommend Irving Pet Hospital.
We made an appointment over phone for our pet's vaccination and were given a specific quote. When we checked in, every number was 5-10$ more than what was quoted over the phone. Technician asked me for proof and a written estimate. Manager asked me for the name of the person giving me the quote. The reason I am putting this review is so that if you plan to use their service, please ask for person's name and ask them to email you the quote. On positive side, their staff was friendly and the service was very prompt.
I really can't thank Irving Pet Hospital enough. My dog had a coyote encounter and ripped out a nail in his front paw. I had never been to Irving, but they were the closest to Golden Gate Park, so I rushed in. They saw him and immediately sprung into action to take care of him. You could really tell that every person who works at Irving Pet Hospital cares deeply for the animals they serve. They were very communicative at every step and called the next day to check in on my pet. I am so grateful for their help.
For a first-time cat dad, I didn't know what to expect; I went to a few vets in San Francisco just to be turned away, I didn't know you needed to be recommended in some places, and some were just not taking more clients. Finally, Irvin Pet Hospital was accommodating and understanding; they answered all my questions without hesitation, squeezed me into their busy clinic, and treated my Laila with love and care. Again, it is rare to find a good customer service establishment in the bay area. Try them out. -R
Dr. Bettada took such great care of our new puppy on his first visit. She explained everything thoroughly giving rationale behind her recommendations and offering options and suggestions on the best course of action. Our dog went into the vet scared but on the way out was hesitant to leave because he had made so many new friends. We also use IPH for out cat’s vet care and have had good experiences with him as well. I would definitely recommend IPH for anyone looking for a thoughtful vet with caring staff.
Been coming here for 3+ years now. Every time has been a good experience. Staff is friendly, prices are fair, and the location is fantastic! Had a mini-scare when my cat’s right eye seemed to acting up. Called and they were able to slot me in for an emergency drop off appointment in the morning the same week. Dropped the cat off in the morning, got a call around noon that everything was good, and picked her up around 2. Big thanks for spotting her in during someone’s lunch! Big + for curbside drop-off.
My dog Peekaboo injured her eye during a rambunctious game of fetch where she dove face first in a spindly bush. The team at IPH were able to see her same day, were thorough, and even called a couple of days later to check on her just to see if she how she was doing. A member of the staff even recognized her when out on a walk in the neighborhood and asked how she was. I’m really pleased with their communication and follow up. Plus I love that she gets one of those fancy dog cookies when visiting too.
Best Pet Hospital Ever. I've been taking my greyhounds to Dr. Fong and the other vet and techs at Irving Pet Hospital for over 15 years. 3 dogs and one cat later, I've received compassionate, thoughtful and thorough care each time without being pressed for unnecessary procedures or treatments. I love Irving Pet Hospital and absolutely, love, adore and appreciate the wonderful care Dr. Fong has given me and my pets through the ups and downs of adoption through euthanization. Best Pet Hospital Evern
The stuff is incredibly professional and easy to work with. I brought my car Sirius to Dr. Peter Sepp who has a GREAT bedside manner. He handled Sirius with the utmost care and taught me how I can better feed my young cat to prevent weight gain. I was also quite pleased with only having to pay $80 for the visit and the FVRCP booster, which they recommended I get every 3 years. Overall, I was very pleased by the staff and feel great about bringing Sirius back for checkups or more major procedures.
I LOVE Irving Pet Hospital. All of my experiences with them have been superb...from the responsiveness over the phone, to the handling of my dear retriever, who get very anxious at the vet...they have been understanding, compassionate, professional, on time, efficient and I highly recommend them. I know it's been hard with a shortage of vets and vet techs, and in my experience, they have handled this with as much grace as possible. Thank you to the entire staff and doctors there.
I’ve had several great experiences at IPH. First of all, they take new patients! My cats we way overdue for their exams and shots after our previous vet retired and I was really worried that I wouldn’t find anyone. The doctors who saw my cats were really attentive and nice. They also have a walk-in urgent care clinic - super convenient. My cat was quickly diagnosed with urinary crystals, I got a care plan, and he is doing better already. Definitely recommend
We love Irving Pet Hospital! Dr. Ding examined our dog when we first adopted him and took the time to talk to us about his physical *and* emotional health. They even gave us a free first exam as a thank you for adopting our dog. We just returned for his annual visit and the visit was quick, easy, and the vet tech took great care of our pup. They’re currently adding staff and expanding their office so hopefully they’ll have more availability in the future.
I was super disappointed with the approach to my pet's care. Due to covid, our regular vet was booked for weeks, so this was a fill-in appointment for a vital concern. Will not return and recommend the same for others. Arrogant vet with lack of help to navigate difficult procedure in securing medications. Vet recommended nearly $1000 in tests but showed no urgency in helping to secure meds. If you aren't fundign them, they can't be bothered.
Everyone there was very friendly and nice! Dr. Tumang is a real gem. It's obvious that he really cares deeply about his furry patients. I came to the urgent care and my cat was seen promptly. Dr. Tumang was able to secure an appointment with a specialist with short notice so that my cat could get the help that he needed. I'm incredibly grateful to everyone who was there during my visit, and would most certainly take my cats back again.
I've been going here for three years and I finally got a chance to go inside and meet everyone since COVID restrictions have gone away. The vet tech, Kai (sp?), was so kind and told me all about their cats and the vet actually sat down with me to discuss my animal's issues and what to do with them. Overall, I had a lovely experience and feel that the staff are both kind to my cats and knowledgeable about their conditions. Thank you!
One of our Goldens, Henry, had a suspected foxtail in his front left paw that another emergency vet missed earlier in the week. We dropped our boy off at the Irving Pet Hospital and in a matter of hours, Dr. Tumang called to confirm that there were in fact two Foxtails embedded deeply into his paw that needed removal. After a quick surgery, Henry was released to us with aftercare instructions and seems to be rapidly improving.
Irving Pet Hospital is great. I have a senior cat with health issues and had to find a new vet quickly when she fell ill after moving a stressful travel distance from her vet. Irving Pet Hospital has been able to get her in quickly and on weekends. Everyone on staff I've interacted with has been super friendly to me at my cat and provide useful answers to all my questions. Location and parking are good too. Highly recommend.
Dr Alfaro and the entire team at Irving pet hospital have so much compassion and knowledge, I didn’t think I could ever find a team of people to help my beautiful Fur baby Fasha during her last few months on earth but I did and I can never thank them enough she was my world they helped her and me during the hardest moments of My beautiful Fasha’s last moments with me. Thank you all so much for everything Natalie Kruchin
To say we LOVE Dr. Fong would be an understatement! He has taken such good care of our Dog Panda and we wouldn't trust Panda to anyone but Dr. Fong. He's gentle, professional, caring and always takes the time to ensure we understand what is going on. We now bring our new puppy Buster to see him as well. The staff is always friendly and work hard to be as helpful as possible. We absolutely LOVE Irving Pet Hospital!
Very kind staff, but they have an odd dropoff-only model running (you can’t go with your dog inside), made us wait an hour past their initial estimate for when we’d get seen, and tried to charge us $500 to get our dog a UTI test (on top of the $150 exam fee) without making it clear that it cost that much. The vet was not invested in helping us make the right practical decision for both our dog and our budget.
IPH is a wonderful practice! Their care has been top notch for my 9 yr old corgi over the past two years; he hates the vet and gets quite reactive, but Dr Zhu and the rest of the team have really helped him feel more comfortable. They are kind and caring towards humans, too, and I especially appreciate how they take time to price out procedures and tests and discuss them before proceeding. Highly recommend!
Irving Pet Hospital has been my go to place for my Pom since I moved to SF back in Summer 2019. Polite, knowledgeable staff and a great explanation of what care is needed and they do not try and nickel dime you. Needed a quick appointment and they fit me in extremely quickly once a cancellation has occurred. Great customer service. Would highly recommend to any in the Sunset Neighborhood or beyond.
Took our dog here after she developed a paw infection that needed urgent treatment, and our usual vet was booked until later in the week. Everything was great, from the intake process, to each member of the team we interacted with, to the vet who had great paw-side manner with our dog, to the person who kindly followed up after to see how she was doing. I highly, highly recommend this place.
We LOVE Irving Pet Hospital! The staff are so attentive, caring, and proactive with our dog's care. They've been really generous with answering our questions and always alert us when he's due for care. You can tell that the staff truly love animals and try to make their vet trips as pleasant as possible. They're very patient with our dog and even sent home this cookie after his latest visit.
I was very thankful for the staff helping me to find an appointment so quickly. Dr. Fong explained everything very well and helped calm my fears. Taking time to explain things and give 3 different options for treatment helped me a lot in deciding what to do. I was really nervous as a first time dog owner and Dr. Fong being patient to listen to me about my worries for my dog helped a lot.
I have been taking my dogs to Irving Pet for the past 25 years. I have found both the vets and the ancillary staff to be both professional and responsive to both my pet's needs and my needs. Since becoming a senior I have been very appreciative of the senior discount and the accommodating hours really helped when I used to work a varying schedule. Irving Pet has always been there for me.
We love Irving Pet Hospital! I have had nothing but positive interactions with the staff -- friendly and responsive all around. Our sweet, floofy, fraidy cat, Dino, appreciates the separate dog & cat entrances. When Dino had to have a couple of teeth extracted recently, I was pleasantly surprised when IPH called first thing the next morning to check on him. 10/10 highly recommend.
Dr. Joe Fong has been our family vet since 2002. He helped us save 2 newborn puppies that others thought would not make it. Since 2002 he has seen all 5 of our pets, seeing them through their first vaccinations, allergy treatments, behavior problems, a cat with asthma, a pitty with a torn ACL, and the various ailments of old age. I highly recommend him and Irving Pet Hospital.
Dr.Fong and the staff of Irving Pet hospital are great. They have been our vets for 17 years and have seen us through the loss of one beloved pet and the loving care of our two dogs for the last 14. They have never failed to be there for us and offer the best medical care and compassionate advice. I would recommend them to anyone looking for quality vet services.
Choosing a vet for your new puppy is pretty stressful but I couldn't be happier with Irving Pet Hospital. In the lead up to our appointment, they patiently answered any questions I had over the phone. On the day of the actual visit, they were thorough and informative. Very high quality, and it's obvious how much they truly care. Definitely recommend.
The doctors and staff here are SO nice. They really care about our animals and ensure that their patients are comfortable. I have 2 cats and I am very happy with the care they receive and know that my cats will be well taken care of. The prices are fair and having the urgent care option is really helpful! I highly recommend if you live in the area.
Brought our new puppy here for her intake and vaccinations because three different friends recommended it. The staff is super friendly and you can tell they truly love animals! We felt instantly welcome and our little pup did really well. Dr. Tumang was so gentle with his approach and also a total straight shooter when giving advice and diagnoses.
This vet hospital is second to none. The comprehensive care that Jasper and Charlie receive is far superior than any other vet hospital I have used. I know their best interests are represented when I hand them over to the staff. The staff are always friendly and professional. If you were my family/friends, I would send you to IPH! Thank you IPH!!!
Oh no! What happened to Dr. Fong!! He was my favorite. I’m not too pleased with our latest visit, The lady Dr. felt a bit pushy and a bit condescending. Went ahead with her recommendations but left feeling I was sold a used car. It does leave you with an icky feeling. So sad, I hate to look for a new vet when I was so pleased with them before.
I took my puppy to Irving Pet Hospital for Vaccine, Doctors and their team members or staffs were so friendly and patiently answered and explained all my concerns about my dog wellness My puppy loves to go there when every year I took him there for vaccine since four years ago. I highly recommend this Irving Pet Hospital to pet lovers.
Disappointed. Always arrive 10 minutes early and they never have seen my dog until at least 30 minutes AFTER the appt is scheduled, even for a simple vaccine. Vet seems unsure of how to diagnose, and called me later to ask more questions that I had already answered multiple times. Also, way overpriced. Won’t be returning unfortunately.
My dog ended up getting his nail caught in his eyelid and I was struggling to find an appointment anywhere when I called Irving pet hospital they mentioned they had urgent care services. I was able to get my dog seen and the vet was caring, attentive and informative. I have never been to vet that had this much compassion! Great work!
I had one cat and two service dogs through the past 30 years with Irving Pet Hospital. The last cat lived to be 17 yrs old and the last two dogs 14.5 yrs old & 9 yrs old. Both commendable ages. Current is 5 yr cat & 4yr new service dog receiving excellent care from Dr. Joe Fong and staff. I HIGHLY recommend this veterinary hospital.
Like everyone they were fully booked up -but we need to get our first puppy visit done so we could start puppy training— they suggested we call again first thing the next day to see if they’d had any cancellations— they did and we got seen that day. The vet tech met us at the car and took our puppy in— when she came out she was fine
Love the people who work there. Don't have the feeling they want to sell you some unnecessary stuff. Just always looking out for your doggies well-being. Take your concerns serious, have a lot of knowledge. And the best they are great with my dogs. And I have a sensitive one which has a past of abuse. My dogs even like coming there.
The best Vets I have been to in a long time. The staff is so caring and everyone takes time to communicate everything clearly even in the crazy pandemic when you can't go in with your pet. Every Vet is expensive in SF so that's just life here. They really care about my cat and take care that is a very skitty and terrified of dogs.
i love irving pet hospital! all the staff has always been so friendly, helpful, and great with my chihuhua that needs a caution stamp on his file! dr. fong is AMAZING! so honest, kind and gentle. my dog sits in his arms, and that never happens with anybody that is not family! i totally trust in the care they provide for my dog!
5 stars! This was our first time there and they were able to see us on really short notice. The whole staff was really friendly and considerate of our concerns. The Dr. took great care of my furry one and was never in a rush. With reasonable pricing a plus! We will be back in the future! Hopefully just for well check-ups. ; )
Best pet hospital in the city!!! Literally saved my cat “Piglet” and made me feel better in one of the most stressful times of my life. Would recommend everyone to bring your pets here. Amazing staff and the owner was looking for solutions to my cats illness on his time off. Don’t know what I would do without you guys!!❤️
Andy is my second dog going to the Irving Pet Hospital. My first one passed away almost three years ago, I didn't forget how good they had taken care of Kuma. Now that Andy got sick and I took him here, again. They are as good as always to care for my baby. I will always bring my baby here whenever he needs medical need.
We love this practice! Dr. Fong is a gem - caring, compassionate, creative and smart. He remembers your animal and loves them all. He is very responsive about coming up with solutions that work with your budget if he can. The entire staff is friendly and competent! I've never hear of anyone who didn't like this practice.
In my 8 years of experience with IPH, their team has always available, professional, kind, and human/authentic. I appreciate the highly efficient in-office process, their clear communication, and willingness to change/adapt if things need fixed. Exceptional work, especially given the high demand for veterinary services.
We have taken our dogs to Irving Pet Hospital for over 25 years. We have seen a lot of veterinarians in that time. Dr. Joe Fong is absolutely the best. The staff members have always been great. They are expanding the hospital to provide even more services. I cannot say enough positive things about Irving Pet Hospital.
They are all super sweet at this place. So much better than the SPCA hospital. Irving pet hospital are so gentle with outhe cats and they were so understanding that we weren't able to bring both of our cats at the same time because one of them wouldn't get into her carrier. I would highly recommend this pet hospital.
Irving Pet Hospital was so kind and transparent about what would go into my dog's first visit. They went over all our options, all things they found, and answered my exhaustive list of questions with ease. My uneasy dog was the calmest and happiest she's ever been after leaving their office. Highly recommend to all.
I loved our first experience with Irving street vet. The level of engagement via FaceTime was amazing and I felt we were in good hands. I wish I remember our vets name, she was a wonderful kind Asian woman who gave us a lot of praise for how well trained our 13 week old labradoodle was. Thank you so much guys!
The folks at Irving Pet Hospital have been taking excellent care of our 9-yr old Goldendoodle since he was a puppy. He's a tad tightly-wound, and they always put him at ease. The front desk is professional, friendly, and efficient and the vets are kind, knowledgeable, and super gentle with their furry clients.
I took my cat to urgent care to get a limp in his hind leg looked at. Caring and kind employees made the visit more pleasant, just a bit more expensive than I expected for a limp in my cat’s hind leg. Overall, I’m glad I was able to get my cat’s issue handled within a couple hours and without an appointment.
We always have a great experience at Irving Pet Hospital. All staff members are wonderful, friendly and knowledgeable. They will always find a spot for appointment as needed. I trust all Doctors at the clinic to see my babies, we love Dr. Fong and Dr. lau. Thank you for all your care and passion.
I can’t say enough at the greatness of this place. The level of professionalism is beyond words and the level of caring and love they have for the safety and well being of your pet is tremendously honest and trustworthy. By far the best vet I’ve experienced in my cats 19 years. Thank You IPH ❤️
Very friendly and are very good with my cats. We unfortunately lost one of our cats earlier this year due to ils age and they helped us through the final process and even sent us a little card with her paw print. They are very thoughtful and also very professional and good at what they do.
The doctors and assistants are very friendly and they truly care about your pet. My dog has seen two different vets here and they were both knowledgeable and caring. The lobby and rooms are clean. They provide leashes or carriers if you need to use one. They are open until 7 most days.
Honest routine services for cats and dogs including dental. Patient and responsive personnel. Receptionist on phone. Transparent prices. Good location and extended business hours help to serve pet appointments after work. They also practicing carb pickups at reserved parking lots now
Dr. was very patient and detailed in communication which was greatly appreciated. All other staff members were very professional and extremely helpful. They turned a very scary illness situation with my cat into a more pleasant experience, thank you entire team for your positivity!
We have been going to Irving Pet Hospital for Almost 3 years, The staff is very friendly and some of the stuff still remember my Dog when she was a puppy. We also referred our friends here and they love Irving Pet Hospital too. I highly recommend Irving Pet Hospital to everyone.
I've been taking my dog here for 3 years ever since he was a puppy and I've loved them. We see Dr. Lao and she's always been incredibly patient, friendly, and accommodating where she can be. The staff / technicians have always been great to work with. Would recommend!
I've taken my cats to Irving Pet Hospital for years, and seen a number of vets there. Without exception, they've been skillful and caring. When I needed specialist help, they made the necessary introductions. Rosalita the Cat (and I) appreciate their support.
I totally miss being in the room during the visits. Its always fun to see how Dr. Fong handles my cats but looking forward to that once covid is more contained. My experience is always great! Always a quick visit and communication easy and smooth.
Best vet clinic in the Bay Area. The staff and vets are extremely friendly and caring. One of my dogs recently underwent surgery. Dr Zhu was extremely attentive to my dog’s post surgery care. I feel I’m good hands with Irving Pet Hospital staff.
we’ve taken all our beloved kitties to Irving Street for nigh on 30 years now, through many changes of staff and vets, and they’ve always treated our sweeties with loving attention and top-notch care. give ‘em a try. your cat/pup deserves it!
I like the continuity of care at Irving Pet. I was sad to see Dr. Bettada leave but I felt really well taken care of by Dr. Kartashova. The clinic staff is friendly as always. I'm glad we've found a good veterinary clinic for Peanut.
Our cat and dogs love the vet techs at IPH! One of our dogs in particular has seen several vets, and everyone has delivered thorough and thoughtful care. Can't wait to actually meet the team in person after the pandemic is over.
