I grew up taking my pets here and was excited to bring my puppy here as they had provided great service before. While I am sure my experience is also a result of the pandemic, personnel shortages, and an increase in pet ownership I'm sad to say the treatment my puppy and I received was sub-par and we have decided to work with another clinic. My puppy broke his leg at 6 mo old. I called Arguello only to be told that they could not see me at all after I had taken him to the ER over the weekend. Not only was the front desk woman rude she also offered literally no help in referring me to any specialist and essentially told me I was on my own to find care for my dog despite the fact that my dog was an established patient. Thankfully the ER doctor was able to contact a specialist she knew and get me set up and taken care of. Arguello should have assisted in this process rather than simply telling me to figure it out on my own. I also contacted them a number of times when my puppy had recurring vomiting and diarrhea as I was concerned. They were only able to see me once and kept telling me to go to the ER. They also would not prescribe medication to help in the event of another episode which meant I had to keep going to the ER whenever this came up because he could never get in to be seen. Finally, one episode was so bad that after taking him to the ER (because they couldn't see me) I was able to get in days later and I requested an ultrasound and a GI blood panel. I was told that I could try giving him vitamin supplements or try him on a prescription diet but was not given a clear diagnosis nor path for treatment. Additionally, my puppy was seen by another vet, and my vet Dr. Ina never touched base to discuss the labs, etc. 3 days later I took him to another vet who immediately diagnosed him with IBD (based on the exact same ultrasound and blood panel) and got him on a regimen to manage his disease. This vet also kindly sent me home with prescriptions in case he did vomit or have diarrhea so I would not have to pay to go to the ER only to be handed these medications. I am not sure what has happened over the years but the level of care and kindness towards pet parents has decreased. I would only consider coming here for annual checkups/vaccinations as they are no assistance with more serious/pressing needs and it is virtually impossible to get seen.
Staff who have worked at a facility for over 20 years says a lot about the business. Arguello's clinicians have excellent credentials, its technicians are extremely competent, and the front desk is always on top of things. (Arguello also offers boarding, and though I dislike the necessity, this facility is the only one I trust.) The practice is extremely organized, and I don't believe I've ever had to wait more than 10 minutes for my appointment; generally I'm ushered right in. Extraordinary clinicians and staff: Dr. Perry Heffelfinger, Dr. Mara Weiss, Tim, Marie, Kim, and Dr. James Ina. If your finances are limited, Arguello will work with you to keep costs at a minimum. Just be sure to inform the doctor at the outset. These clinicians would much rather treat at a more basic level rather than know that animals needing treatment are not being seen at all because of lack of funds. Finally, Arguello is an ethical veterinary practice. It will support you if your animal has a serious condition and can be more thoroughly treated at UC Davis VMTH. Be sure to ask questions about your treatment options, including the level of care, the price and treatment risks of the two facilities.
My dog needed to be checked before his trip to Europe and the process was a bit confusing and not straight forward. 1. Need to make an appointment at the USDA SF chapter. They can only accept appointments few times per week so as soon as you have departure date count back 9 days and book an appointment. You don't need to bring your pet with you. 2. Count 10 days back from departure date and have your dog paperwork ready by your vet. Make sure your vet is accredited. Dr. Vanessa Reese is accredited and it made my life easier. 3. Check the animal import website and see what do they need to accept the pet. In Europe there is a special from for animals traveling from US. Some websites will charge $20 for the 5 page PDF format. But you can easily find it for free on 2 or 3rd page of google results. 4. Your pet is ready to leave US. Make sure you also plan ahead and ask what's needed to bring your loved one back to the US soil. We have been with the Arguello Pet Hospital for 4 years. We love it. They always take a good care of Chief.
This is for 549 Arguello. Sometimes I drink coffee black. My bro Pat's leg is busted. He tore his ACL like some kind of lo-carb eating dingus. Can you believe this election. I was like, man oh man. Canadian bacon. If you have a pet how often do you take it on walks. Oh yeah, people that take there cats for a walk? What is that all about. Piano in the morning is beautiful. Bumble. Was San Francisco built on rock and roll like that 80's song? I'm hoping the Timberwolves make the playoffs this year. Young team, solid coaching, they got it all. Pepper or Salt? I'm partial to both. Wouldn't it be great if coconut water came out of the faucet instead of tap water? Oh yeah, why is't it called coconut juice? Are coconut's fruits? When I get back to NYC, I'm going to eat some bagels. Homeless people. Golf's a sport and don't you forget it. Happy Halloween 2016.
I’ve brought my dog to around 10 different veterinarians over the years (we’ve moved around a lot) and Arguello Pet Hospital by far is my favorite. Dr. Vanessa Reeves is Wolfe’s current vet - she is direct, informative, and friendly. She’s basically that coworker want on your project because she tells you what your options are, what the risks are, and what her opinion is without feeling like she’s pushing you towards a decision. My dog is also a leaner and gives her heavy leans and sappy eyes - he definitely vibes with her better than some other vets we’ve had over the years! We moved to the peninsula a couple of years ago and I’ve tried 3 different vets down here, none of which I connected with. After a few frustrating visits we’ve decided it’s worth the trek up a couple of times a year to have our dog treated at Arguello Pet Hospital.
I just recently moved to San Francisco and my dog got allergies/sick. I walked in to the hospital ( which i believe it’s a place to take sick animals, not healthy ones). I was explaining the situation with the lady at the counter and she did not let me explain what my dog had. I believed it was kennel cough but it was really allergies. When she heard the word kennel cough she literally kicked me out of the place saying that they would call. I don’t want a call from people that treat their customers like that. You should be nicer to people and know that you ( lady in front) get paid because of customers like me! I am not going to be your client and make sure I tell everyone I know the horrible customer service received by you guys and that you aren’t worth the hastle.
This place is the best. We got our first dog as independent adults at the San Francisco SPCA and were lucky enough to live near by at the time. Arguello Pet Hospital has been kind, thorough and understanding the entire time. 10 years later and no matter where we have moved in the Bay Area we make the trip back here every time. Being able to trust your vet is so important when our pets can’t always communicate what is wrong clearly. I trust Arguello Pet Hospital completely and I’m so grateful that I found a place I feel comfortable enough to do that. They might be a little pricey at times, but you get what you pay for and here that means high quality veterinary care. It is worth every penny knowing my dog is getting the best care possible.
I've called APH on two occasions in the last 7 months to inquire about treatment for my pups. Both times, I was met with the most unprofessional, condescending, attitude I've ever experienced from a receptionist/customer service rep. To whomever owns/manages this practice: I spent $30,000 on veterinary care for 2 dogs in the last 12 months. You didn't see a penny of it and will not see a penny of my money in the future. If the way you treat human beings is any indication of how you treat animals, you should find a new line of business. Disgusting.
For anyone else who is immunocompromised, chronically ill, or just wants to still avoid getting sick for other reasons, I wouldn’t recommend here. I called to ask if it would be possible to request the vet/whoever is treating my pet to wear a mask just to be safe, and was told sternly that they “can’t force any of the staff to do something if they don’t want to” since as I am aware, it is not required. I found this to be a really weird response to a simple request that makes pet healthcare accessible for immunocompromised/other clients.
Be sure to keep the first visit be the only visit. Don't let them send your pet home to get better on their own. Because bring them back a second time effectively doubles your costs. Also, be sure to ask how suggested treatments might change outcome. A $250 x-ray for a constipated cat doesn't get the poop out any faster. Oh, and it can cost $85 if we skip the radiologist. Beware the stupid profit making tests. Pet insurance has made doctors service hawkers. The doctor makes all the difference.
Over 18 years ago I brought my puppy to Arguello at the recommendation of two friends. I have been delighted with the excellent staff and vets during the entire lifetime of my dog despite her issues as she aged. They provided compassionate, caring and professional attention though her old age to her passage over the rainbow bridge at almost 18 years old. It was a joy to return to Arguello with my new puppy and look forward with confidence to the wonderful care my new puppy will receive.
I’ve been bringing my almost 6 year old pup here since she was a little baby fluff. She was spayed here and the vet (Dr. Hathaidharm) did a perfect job - very clean, barely a scar was left behind. The vets here are very knowledgeable and thorough, the front desk staff have always been friendly and helpful, and the techs are kind and seem experienced enough to me. I used to drive over here when I lived in Bayview, now I’m in the same neighborhood as them. They’re great.
I continue to be impressed with Arguello Pet hospital staff. My dog has needed a variety of “urgent” visits over the past year and they make every effort to accommodate you. The staff are caring, the doctors are highly trained and very personable. They know how to make the pets feel comfortable during their exams. I really appreciate the excellent care and attention to detail. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Reeves and her team!
I have been taking my puppy to Dr.Ina since his first check up at 9 weeks and just had him neutered 2 days ago at 9 months. Dr.Ina is a gem, explained everything in detail, called twice to check in on my puppy to make sure everything was ok. E-mails are always answered quickly. What was a very nerve racking experience was made much easier and more comfortable by Dr.Ina and all her staff. I highly recommend Arguello Pet Hospital!
Can't say enough great things about Arguello Pet Hospital. We had the privilege of having Dr. Jamie Ina be our dog Maggie's primary vet her whole life (almost 12 years) and during that time we consistently had amazing, professional & compassionate care. Sadly, we lost our old pup a couple of weeks ago, but we will definitely be coming back to Arguello Pet Hospital & Dr. Jamie Ina for our future pup's veterinarian care.
I have entrusted the well being of my cats with Arguello pet hospital since 1980. My kitties have seen both Dr. Wolfe and Dr. Nishimura and I always know my pets . [no wait, I think "I" am the pet] will receive kind and compassionate care when "I" am there for a visit. The front staff is also exceptionally kind. I wouldn't trust my cats with anyone but Arguello Pet Hospital. Well Done, Folks !
Do not state anywhere on website or app that it’s only for existing patients. There is a secret process for new patient registration that is not available electronically. Website/app not accessible, spoke w staff and they don’t know if they are ADA (Americans w disabilities act) compliant Bummer bc was excited about the app but really doesn’t feel like they want my business
Dr Weiss who has cared for my old cat for many years listens, is practical and very knowledgeable. She does all that is necessary and nothing that is unnecessary. Front desk and vet assistance also very good. I am beyond pleased and have never reviewed any service or shop before....it takes a lot to get me on line. Both you and your pet will be well cared for.
It's hard to understand the complaints about rude and unresponsive staff and doctors. The staff has always been fine and pleasant to deal with. Even with a waiting room full of dogs! And Dr Nishimura could not be kinder and gentler with my pup. Pup sails through her exams and tests with nary a complaint. Overall, APH is terrific. We are happy clients.
Everyone at Arguello Pet Hospital works so hard for any pet they encounter and have made me feel very supported whenever my cats are needing care. They work hard to help you through whatever your pet is going through and are so kind while doing it. Otis, Ram, and I are forever grateful for the care they have given!
I tried to ask what core vaccines do they use for kittens. They REFUSED to tell me and said that when our kitten came in the doctor would discuss this with me. I explained that I needed to know before I arrived. She told me that I did not have to come there but she would NOT tell me what FVRCP vaccines they use.
Incredible experience. Everyone who works here is incredibly thoughtful and kind. I highly recommend Dr. Karissa Nishimura... she has taken care of my Pippin twice now & both times I have felt confident that his well being, comfort and healthy were the first priority. Thank you everyone @ Arguello Pet Hospital!
Amazing, Attentive, Aware Veterinary Care We love this clinic. Surgery for two cats--very different needs and temperaments--went incredibly well. The doctors deeply listen, the techs are incredibly loving and lavish in their affection and care, and the surgery outcomes have been excellent.
My partner has been taking his cats here for years, and when I got my cat I didn't hesitate to get his care here. They're incredibly thorough, thoughtful, and you can tell that all of the staff genuinely love their fuzzy patients. I can't recommend them highly enough!
Arguello Pet Hospital has incredibly caring and competent personnel, from the front desk staff and techs to every doctor who has treated our dogs. Everyone is kind, informative, and patient with pet owners and their “not always cooperative” patients.
I’ve been a client of Arguello Pet Hospital for about 15 years. Even when my pets have been challenging, we have been treated with warmth and respect. I always feel welcomed and know my animals are in excellent hands. Thanks Drs Ina and Wolfe!
Dr Reeves and the crew are so attentive and so friendly. We immediately felt welcomed and comfortable stepping into the cozy hospital. They also made sure to send reminders about the appointment and ask for documents in advance, which was
I love all the doctors at Arguello Pet Hospital including Drs Reeves, Nishimura, and Wolfe. They do such a great job examining my pup and explaining things to me. Also the front desk staff and techs really are knowledgeable and friendly
Took my dog in, she had multiple issues. The shot for allergies worked. Was going to have them remove a fatty deposit from the side of her neck . They wanted 1100, I'll take my old lady some place else. She is 84 so maybe not.
This was Max's (the cat) first time at Arguello Pet Hospital and everyone was so thorough! Best of all was Dr. Battle who was extremely patient and explained everything to me (and Max). I felt we were in really good hands!
I've had such a wonderful experience with this vet. They're responsive, compassionate, clear, and have always been able to see my cat on short notice if necessary. I wish I could get healthcare like this for myself!
Possibly the rudest lady on the phone ever. It says online they do exotic animals online and Google, and she will interrupt you to say she has no idea and she doesn't know and is very short and incredibly rude.
She always knows the corner she's on when we get there and tries to run away despite the amazing care she has gotten throughout the years from Arguello pet hospital. Thank you so much for a healthy lil girl.
Dr. Reeves is the best! Very knowledgeable with our sphynx cat!! Love this hospital. Great prices!!!!!! Hands down best vet in the city after seeing many in the city with our guinea pigs and naked cat.
Such a wonderful Pet Hospital! Take my Pets here all the time. There was a protest yesterday happening nearby and the owners were also kind to the protesters! Wonderful place to go.

I wouldn't consider taking my fur babies anywhere else. Great doctors, efficient and friendly staff. My dogs are my babies so nothing but the best for them …
I have complete trust coming here. You what you pay for. They are always busy but there is a reason why. Come here..especially if you love your furry friends.
Polite and very professional, small waiting room, no customer restroom, have to use restroom at gas station nextdoor. Parking is a nightmare.
The doctor was very knowledgeable, gentle on our dog. She also gave us some nutritional advice. The staff were very polite and courteous.
Poorly treated by the office staff. I did email the doctor. No answer. Dog has died Today, NOV 6,2023. I WILL NEBER GO THERE AGAIN.
This place is great, they will take great care of your pet. Dr. Jamie is wonderful and will look after your pet as if it is her own
All the doctors and staff are really friendly! Wait isn’t too bad and they have tech drop in hours which is convenient.

Good experience with the vet. Older building with somewhat limited parking.
Love these folks! They take such great care of all three of our pups!
Poor customer service and the most expensive vet in SF. Go elsewhere
When I go there I always order their Patty melt sandwich with fries.
