"They've done a very nice job with this museum"
"I had an excellent, enjoyable and educational time"
It's a bit of a drive out from the city. Driving in, from the main street, you turn onto this side road that passes through a gate (feels like a scene from Jurassic Park, sorta). There was plenty of parking and plenty of shade to keep your car cool. Walking into the museum, I passed by the front desk. Didn't noticed the bad service that some of the reviews mentioned. The front desk lady was helpful in giving me a map and explaining the layout of the museum- it has an indoor area and then a quarter mile trail outside. I spent a little over an hour to explore. Indoors: There were a bunch of text-heavy posters about the Indians and the area. Then, there were about 2 or 3 glass enclosed displays of historic tools and pottery in the front and then 2 or 3 more of those toward the back. In some, it was pointed out that the items were only replicas... There was also a small room with some photos of the area, and then also a kids area with some fun books to read. There just really wasn't much to see... Outdoors: The trail has some labels for the vegetation. I could also see the modern day houses in clear view on the side of the trail, so it made it feel not very authentic and historic. I liked the piles of rocks which make up a hill, but I did not see any petroglyphs. Maybe they just weren't well marked (?). The trail was mostly winding past those piles of rocks, a children's digging area, and nothing else. There were two or three signings explaining the sights. I also noticed a part where the trail branched off and there was a bridge the spanned over very brackish brown water, and for some reason they had placed picnic tables on the bank- not a good spot for picnics... Overall, it's a small but decent musuem.
This was a nice little museum. I don’t think I would want to pay $9/person to see it, but we got in free so I can’t complain. It had a small indoor museum, and then a 1/2 mile outdoor trail. It is probably really cool for adults or older kids that are really into petroglyphs and this kind of history. A lot of the petroglyphs were high up and really hard to see, and there wasn’t much going on otherwise. We took our two year old, and he enjoyed running around the trail. They may have other activities going on at other times, but it was pretty quiet today. Overall, a little boring and I’m definitely glad it was free for us, but still a decent place if you want to walk around and look at a little bit of nature.

Very neat! The mini-walk to the petroglyphs is interesting and well-thought-out, not to mention level and flat if you have mobility issues. This site was very interesting and the kids really enjoyed it. It was priced just right. Definitely something fun to do. My ten-year-old girl was fascinated. My seven-year-old boy found it interesting and he was able to comprehend what the petroglyphs were. He really enjoyed trying to find them on the rocks. The site has created a petroglyph scavenger hunt for some of the more prominent petroglyphs. The scavenger hunt print-out they give the kids could use a little cleaning up (to make it more legible and more organized in appearance) but my kids enjoyed it nonetheless, as did the adults. Great job!
They've done a very nice job with this museum. The information inside was fascinating and well displayed. The outside walk was a little more difficult though. The carvings - understandably - aren't as clear as the depictions. In fact, if you didn't know what you were looking for, in most cases the shapes were mostly indistinguishable from other naturally occurring marks. As such, it wasn't a very interesting visit for our kids (ages 6-12). The walking path was scenic though and pleasant, especially on a late February morning before the temperatures got too hot. So, this seems like a good place to visit for people high-school age on up, but anything younger than that and I think the whole experience will be lost on them.
I had an excellent, enjoyable and educational time. Arrived and there was plenty of spacious parking. Walked into the reception entrance paid the $9 fee to the hospitable informative host, was given a Shirt sticker pass that's good from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Was shown code and link to log into the self guided tour narroration which was very informative. I highly recommend bringing camera with good lense for zooming. The park also had tube for children and adults to view high up on the hill petroglyphs, which you can line your camera or binoculars up with as well.

Phoenix is a huge city. Millions of people live here and museums like this open the door to the fascinating world of prehistoric Arizona. Sure, you could drive to places farther away to see more impressive glyphs, but the juxtaposition of track homes and the Adobe Mountain Dam to these millennia-old pictures really gives you something to think about. Just outside my door are these images pecked into rocks thousands of years ago. Amazing. The price is a little high for what you get, but if you are an ASU student you get in for free. The center itself has a lot of good information and programs for children.
Unique valley experience - binoculars helpful The petroglyph park includes a wonderful little museum loaded with fascinating info about this ancient rest stop. It seems travelers from 1 to 5 thousand years ago left their marks on this ancient volcanic rock pile. It's like an ancient tagger's oasis. While you can't get up close & climb the rocks, there is a walkable stone path of a 1/4 mile within viewing distance. The museum itself included up close photos and actual artifacts, plus lots of details about past travelers through the area.
Came here with my mom, we loved it! The more you look, the more you see, and it was almost a game trying to spot the drawings. The space is fantastic and I loved that there wasn't much to the outdoor space, just being in the natural setting was fabulous. Yes it's sunny, yes it may be warm, but what else would you expect. I'd love to come back because I guess that in a different light different Petroglyphs would be visible. Very friendly staff and a cute kids space too.
This is a great place for a leisurely stroll with a splash of education. The trail is 1/4 mile in, 1/4 mile out, on mostly even terrain. A great entry point for less adventurous hikers or first timers. There are a few shaded seating stops to view the beautiful scenery or to rest your feet, a mock excavation site, and hands on stone grinding corn. The best part is that the trailhead is a small museum, with restrooms and running water. Great way to spend an hour or two.
This is a great place to take a nice stroll in the morning. Would have been 5 stars but, the $9 to walk around and look at some old drawings is a bit much for me. Also, the plus is 5 and under are free and ASU students are free. It is managed by ASU. I will have a better review in a week when I actually walk it again. Since it has been over 5 years since I have been here. Hours W-Sun 8am-2pm M&T Closed Also closed this week Thursday&Friday but open Saturday and Sunday
1/2 mile round trip trail at very light incline on gravel. I was a little confused by the museum description of where the archeology digs took place, but the trail is very well marked for the petroglyphs. Very nice, short hike and museum visit. ASU has really kept the place up and the museum docent was very friendly.

I really enjoyed the preserve, though not many petroglyphs. The entry fee was a little to high for the lack of things to see and do. The reason for 1 star was because of the attitude of the manager, I think her name was Celeste. She was rude, uninviting, and didn't seem like she wanted to be there.

A cool place for a small day trip. Not to expensive to get in. It's an ASU affiliated area, so you can get in for free if you're an ASU student. ASU used the area as part of their agave research project. Unsure if they are still conducting research. The path to walk along to view the the petroglyphs is only a mile and half long, so you don't have to worry about being on your feet for an extended period of time.
The walk to (or drive, I suppose), is very nice on the flat but windy road; depending on the time of day, you'll see bunnies, quail, & tiny squirrel creatures. Inside the Rock Art Center is nice & cool, open & airy, & has interesting info about the indigenous & the hieroglyphics. The outside walk area to see the glyphs, is nice w/ a wide path & lots of covered benches, usually w/ misters to cool you off.
really kewlmega experience, lots of Nature, animals if ur quiet and timing's line up,lol, informational with a purpose for all levels, went on a cultural center pass from the library, awesum places, and this'll be one the top of the scale too, trail has markers to assist, and places to sit and take a process, rest, one of the places that's not a challenge for strollers/assisted mobility etc VERY neat
Wouldn't call this a fun place to go but it is certainly diverting and educational. It is very interesting. They have students and faculty from the University there to answer questions. They have a lovely gift shop too. I wouldn't go there in the summer fir two reasons: the trail to see the petroglyphs is VERY hot, no shade at all, and their hours are very abbreviated. Go in the winter or spring.
A little secret spot of Arizona filled with lots of history and nature. It’s amazing to see the petroglyphs and artifacts in person. The trail is always lovely and quiet and the staff is amazing. Someone is always there ready to share knowledge and answer any questions you may have either in the museum itself or on the trail. They even have a fun little scavenger hunt little ones can do.
The preserve is a beautiful place to explore Southern Arizona's plants and wildlife, while also discovering some of its indigenous history. The trail is short and easy, and the petroglyphs are marked so that you can search them out around the tumbled boulders. The staff members I spoke to were friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about the area and the peoples who lived here long ago.
My family and I visited just last week and the lady who runs the place gave us a short tour showing us all the petroglyphs and she was great. We learned so much! We thought it was just wonderful that the staff works so hard taking care of this place and keeping it open for us to see. My kids loved it!!

After 3 Seniors walked in the hot sun for a half hour, we went inside dehydrated and asked where the water cooler was. She said "We don't have one"......... but for a fee they can give you some water! OMG Really? Then I remembered that it is managed by ASU.

I drove over to the Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve and it is not open. The sign doesn't say when it will be open. I got on the website but it doesn't give a date either. I grew up in this area and wanted to see the petroglyphs. They really are amazing to see. Best advise is check their website to make sure they are open before you drive out there.
I saw some pictures online and thought this would be interesting. I didn’t really see the petroglyphs that others boast about, but maybe a guided tour would’ve made this a better experience for me. Not really worth the admission fee, in my opinion. Still enjoyed the short hike and outdoor scenery, it’s a beautiful piece of land.
The walking trail provided a beautiful view of the petroglyphs and the informative and very well designed museum was a great way to finish our visit. We definitely will return for another visit.

Great place to learn about petroglyphs. Not a ton, and a bit hard to see, but most have been left where they were carved which is interesting to see. Short walking trail with shaded seating. Good guide to the plants and fauna of AZ. Worth a short stop and the $9 entry free. Closes mid afternoon.
Small but very well done exhibit area leading to a short walk to see petroglyphs on the basalt rocks. Very moving. Excellent staff at the petroglyphs to answer questions.

Did not feel welcome at all...very bad service. Was waiting at the front desk for 20-25 min. until someone came. It says free admission on their website but when we get there they say it's $7 per person. Will not be going here again. Not a good experience at all! …
I grew up with the preserve literally in my backyard and still love to visit. It is a great little hidden gem at the end of deer valley road. It would be a great field trip or family day. They have activities and a short trail to experience the preserved rock art.
Most of the petroglyphs are hard to see very short walk, kids had a hard time finding everything on the paper, but still had fun trying.

Fun short, easy walk through a desert scene with labeled plant life until you come upon the petroglyph areas. Some stunning views through pipe placement. Takes some time to see lots of them...you could be there for hours! Nice, fun, unusual stop.
Great place to take kids to learn a bit of ancient local history! Lots of interesting information for both kids and adults. Walk is short and best in the morning, kids are given a map and paper to track which petroglyphs they see along the way.
Lovely place, amazing petroglyphs! Lots of history at this site that is well documented and maintained. Saw a beautiful little verdin (bird) and two chuckwallas (large lizards) and of course, lots of interesting petroglyphs. Well worth a visit!
Good museum. Easy walk path, good signs. Easy to see petroglyphs. We spent 1.5 hrs felt like we saw everything. Nice gift shop. Friendly folks.

Very educational albeit small location. Affordable too. Bring binoculars, especially if you are nearsighted. Great little museum. I really was amazed at just how many glyphs you could find if you simply paused and looked for a while.
This place is amazing. It’s very easy for kids to explore and very educational. Note that dogs are not allowed.

Very cool. Takes a while to start seeing the petroglyphs out of the wall of boulders but once you do they start popping up. The F shaped pipes attached to the railings are sighting tubes to help find certain petroglyphs.
Very nice historical and archaeological park just NW of Phoenix. They had a knowledgeable docent who explained the petroglyph history. Also had an owl rescue group and pottery demonstration of indian craftsmanship.
An interesting tour, but a bit limited and the Petroglyphs are a bit difficult to see especially since you can't get very close. Also a bit of a concern if you have small children with all of the snake warnings.
So I've never been to the Rock Museum, but there's lots of great trail biking in the area to be had. Nice and quiet on a sunny day and not too many people around, but that's maybe because it's state property LOL
Docent helped us see all the petroglyphs and some of the plants also. Very informative.

Everything was so beautiful, you can see the beginning of plants ready to sprout, the sacred areas preserved, so awesome. It is a nice short trail, easy to see everything. So peaceful, so serene.
Nice mid-day walk, good interpretive center. Petroglyphs are a touch underwhelming but all-in-all a pleasant educational experience and a fair way to kill an hour waiting for our tee time :-)
These employees must have a loyalty to their job rather than their ethics. I came here and everyone was so rude. I will not recommend to anyone I know who will be in the Glendale area.
A very nice somewhat hidden gem. It displays a very good exhibit of the local petroglyphs. We went during the summer but plan on going back again during the cooler months this fall.
Interesting if you are into this type of historical thing. An easy 1/2 mile stroll to see it all. I would suggest to di it in the AM if you do it in the summer. It can be very hot.
Such an interesting place. Cool to see our native history so close to the city. Would have been 5 stars if they had more of the petroglyphs labeled as many are difficult to spot
It is a great preserve! Everything is well maintained, it presents very interesting information, and the quarter mile ish walk out to see the petroglyphs is a very pleasant one.
A short easy walk with visible and clear petroglyphs. We enjoyed our visit and loved spotting the wildlife and the different plants along the way. A great little side trip.
Loved it! The history was awesome, the place was really hot but it eas Arizona in the summer, whats an idaho boy to do? But it eas very interesting and very informative.
Very nice experience, interesting exhibits and information, nice trail. Friendly employees, make sure about hours before you go, and be careful in summer with the heat!
What a true gem! This place is so perfect for family friendly trips. Our daughter loved seeing the petroglyphs and playing in the children's area. This is a must visit!

Excellent self guided tour with very helpful rangers available and interesting. The rocks are a little tricky to see, but the view tubes make it easier to find.
It was a beautiful experience to see these native American petroglyphs. The history, culture and pride of ancient ancestors to provide a glimpse of the past.
Clear petroglyphs at the end of a short, well maintained trail. We were rained out and had to cut our hike short. I hope to come back and finish it some day.
Always went on The Indian Cultural day. Wonderful, educational and handicap friendly. An awsome outing.. My mother of 88 enjoyed every aspect of the site.
Awsome place! Too bad it took a lot of research to find out about it. IT should be one of the first places to visit when you are in Phoenix.
The guide was very knowledgeable about the sites. Doesn't take long to walk the trail so it is a nice outing to see some historic writing.
It's a short walk but there are hundreds of of glyphs that you can find. It was great for the kids and they actually enjoyed some history
Must see. Hundreds of glyphs along a short trail. Neat to see in their original context. We also saw numerous lizards along the path.

Kind of a disappointment. It's out in the middle of nothing, the Petroglyph are kind of cool, but there's not much else to see.

So amazing. Go early, wear a hat, have water, trail mix, camera, and ur imagination. We feel so much more in touch with Az.
Nice quick stop for some history. Many petroglyphs to see, recommended if in the vacinity. ~$9 usd entry fee (worthwhile).
Small museum but an amazing experience. They make it easy to discover the petroglyphs on the mile hike through the ruins.
Very neat museum and outdoor trail comprised of known existing petroglyphs, nearly all of which have not been disturbed!
There's something too these petroglyphs. Especially the ones depicting a creature with big hands and broad arms. Yeah...
Short, easily accessible path with dozens if not hundreds of petroglyphs visible (depends on time of day and weather)
Not open Sunday - Tuesday. Was rather disappointed me and my family couldn't come here while visiting Phoenix area.
Ancient history here in the US is fascinating since there is so little. We try to find and see as much as we can.
Great out of the way place..lots of petroglyphs and critters. The place is well run and put together
Nice museum, lots of petroglyphs, the trail is not very long so it can be done in less than an hour.
Totally loved the petroglyphs and surrounding area. This unexpected gem is a place I'll visit again.
Petroglyphs galore on a gentle walk! This is a really cool find I will bring all my visitors to see!
Short walk, things for kids, good facilities, reasonably priced, high quality things in small shop
Largest collection of Petroglyphs in AZ. Very knowledgeable guide about trees and plants as well.
This is a Gr8 way to spend the morning. One of the best Saturday mornings I've had in a long time
A must-see ...Great for tours , school classes and daycare field trips. Lots to learn and see.
Very much a worth while experience. I got my ticket free through the Phoenix Public Library
Great short side trip for anyone! Trying to see the glyphs and catch a good shot was fun!
It has a small but informative museum and a trail that leads for viewing many petroglyphs
This is a very nice facility with a small gallery. The site is amazing, ancient history.
Easy access, nice educational displays, and enough petroglyphs to make it worthwhile.
Nice, small museum inside. Petroglyphs outside, naturally. Is a fee to the museum.
A fun place- bring your binoculars- some of the rocks are distant. A short walk.
Good times take the kids too. Give yourself 2 to 2 hours to see it. Short walk
Cool little place to visit, staff very friendly, Lots of cool books to.
The energy here is absolutely incredible, so inviting, comfortable...
Small but interesting park. Worth a stop if you're visiting Phoenix.
Very neat. Probably boring for kids but a very quaint place to go
Neat little Museum. Good educational experience for children.
A very nice place to visit a lot of historical information
Such a cool exhibit, walk and educational experience !
A true hidden gem. ty ASU for preserving our history
If you want to learn more the staff is very helpful
Difficult for wheel chairs due to deep gravel trail
