The local greasy is way better for halve the price and the same amount of grease"

Went to a fish and chip shop to have fish and chips, chose our fish and then get charged $16 to cook it??? Well, we weren’t going to eat it raw!!! Batter was oily, peeled it off the fish and the fish was mushy and tasteless! Had a dozen oysters to start, they were beautiful and fresh, thankfully, at $26 So, my husband and I had fish and chips, shared a 600ml bottle of coke, and with the oysters it came to $71!!! The local greasy is way better for halve the price and the same amount of grease. Back at the airport today I decided to give them a try again for hot food, 23 degrees and no shade, 3:30 so not a busy time, raced in for a quick takeaway. Noted it was exactly the same price as sit down, however sit down included salad, takeaway was simply the seafood and chips. Given a buzzer as i had the dog in the car I went out to wait, aircon on, aircon off, dog out of the car, dog in the car, anything to try and keep cool. All the while I could hear three staff talking in the kitchen and washing dishes. No other customers arrived, I’m patient, very patient but after 45 minutes of waiting I took my buzzer back inside to find they simply hadn’t cooked my order, no explanation why, no food, simply a refund after 45 minutes and wasting a help of fuel trying to keep the dog and myself cool. I told them my dog and I were cooking outside… still no explanation. I won’t be back, the greatest seafood in Australia wins were simply a Facebook marketing campaign that included a free meal if you vote for them and shared and not a reflection on true quality of the food served or in my case not served. We will be getting all our seafood from the wharf from now on.

TGS - thank you for letting us book in for s birthday lunch Such a busy day for you guys (27/12 - and a beautiful sunny day), and despite the 45min wait, and being rushed off their feet, your two serving staff were so accommodating and kind. It's comfy, it's homey, it feels like am authentic just-off-the-boat seafood place and I'm very impressed. No frills, no nonsense and the best squid I've ever had in my life. Our table of 4 all said how good their orders were (fisherman's basket, battered oysters, fish of the day, crumbed scallops, squid and buttered half-shell fresh scallops. We didn't mind the wait, since the staff were friendly, clearly under the pump and the food was delicious and fresh. Thank you! We will be back

We had sussed it out on the net but dropped in to check it out in the afternoon and met the lady we assumed was the owner. As it turned out she wasn't. You can tell when someone has enthusiasm for their job and this lady basically sold us on the dinner and how to do it well. We booked a table at 5:45 because it can get busy with walk ups. 2 x Fishermen's Baskets with chips AND salad - what a bargain. A constant stream of customers had the wait time for take aways out to 30 minutes at one stage but the staff were honest about the wait, friendly and didn't stop for a moment - they seriously deserve a pay rise because they are giving excellent service which is hard to find in Australia. Then without being asked our hostess gave me a Seniors discount - thank you. Thanks folks for an excellent dinner experience - we will be back.

Best Fish & Chips I've had ever. The dishes other customers had ordered looked fantastic also. The service was very fast and friendly. I've known that this eatery was close by when travel past, but until today, I regrettably, I lacked the good sense to call in. That won't be happening again.

Have been here several times in the last few years and have always spoken highly of your food but today we were extremely disappointed with our meals. We ordered 2 burgers both with flake (knowing it cost more to get flake - thats fine) in no way shape or form did we recieved flake- whatever fish it looked and tasted like it had been frozen for way too long. We will not return and we will not recommend this venue anymore to anyone

Sep 2023. Our favourite place to visit on the way to the airport. We went here for a late midday lunch prior to departing Hobart. Ordered half a lobster with chips to share and two soft drinks for about $45. The lobster (local) was lukewarm, however was still well-cooked and tender, and the chips was crispy and moreish. Casual ambience with indoor and outdoor seating available. Service was quick and friendly. Good value. Overall, a good place for casual seafood and chips.

What a poor experience! Undercooked, overpriced, inedible food. Shared my feedback with the owner and their response was, 'you can't please everyone' .... What an appalling attitude for a place whose job is it to provide a consistent level of service and food produce. The business owner defended their attitude by pointing me to all the glowing Google reviews. This review is accurate! Save your time and money. It isn't hard at all to find much better food at a cheaper price .... The obvious problem with this place is ordering a meal seems to be like buying a lottery ticket... Some win and some lose. If you do choose to eat here, good luck with your spin!

This place is garbage. I was told it was award winning so thought I'd try it. I was told they were a little busy when I ordered and it'd be around 25 minutes and could we go wait in the car to keep the entrance clear even though my wife and I were the only 2 at the counter. At 40 minutes I went to ask how long it'd be and was told another 10 but we'll just give you your money back if you want so they obviously hadn't even started cooking my food. I then got my food after 50 minutes and to say it was underwhelming would be an understatement. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone

6 stars if I could. Firstly the service was amazing, we were about to order too much and instead of letting us waste out money they advised we had ordered enough. The ladies behind the counter were probably the nicest and helpful people we met on this Tassie trip. Then the food. Definitely lived up to all the top reviews on Google. We order the $125 platter and a doz oysters extra cause it's Tassie and rude not to hehe. Everything cooked to perfection. Thanks again for making our last Tassie meal such a memorable one. Definitely head to the airport a little early to stop in here before or a free a flight.

We were staying in the caravan park neraby. We saw the sign when we drove in. Had to have a look. Decided to stay for dinner. We had fish of the day (Ling) and chips plus curried scallops. The service was fast and friendly. The food was just as good. Maybe we will have time to revisit on our way home to Western Australia. We will certainly be letting our friends know if they are visiting Hobart.

We went to the Drunken Admiral the night before and were very disappointed. This place was so much better and half the price. The half lobster was great, very fresh. We also had the deep fried lobster, it was really good. Even the kids fish was fantastic, it was real fish, not just out of the box. We were very impressed with Tasmanian Gourmet Seafood, especially for a place that we googled last minute while eating our disappointing and overpriced Drunken Admiral dinner. Also, the staff here were very friendly and happy to chat!

The fish n' chips here lives up to its name of being the best fish n' chips of 2017. Getting the fish battered is the way to go I think. The blue grenadier (fish of the day) was carefully battered and fried to perfection. The two free lemon slices are a nice plus to add flavor to the fish. The chips were crispy, hot, and savoring. They also serve ice cream here for dessert after a delicious seafood meal. If you're on the way to Hobart, definitely make a quick stop to this place and try their fish n' chips even if you don't like that stuff!

  • M Ruff

I felt like a fisherman's basket and enjoyed the mix of light crispy batter on the fish and prawns, and crunchy crumbing on the scallops and squid. Paid the $2 extra to have both chips and salad and appreciate the generous serving of lightly dressed mixed salad which balances the meal perfectly. I'd forgotten how good this place is and will definitely make it a regular drop-in any time I'm near the airport.

Not going back....no salad which was supposed to be included, no tartate sauce either. Family meal was inedible after travelling 10 minutes home...soggy and oily. Wanted lobster burgers which weren't available even though plenty of lobster for sale..natural oysters were packed in with hot food and were full of grit.. kids are having toast at home instead. $80 better spent anywhere elsewhere... so disappointing..

Fish and Chips in Australia has always been overpriced, but I still had to try this new one out near the airport. Portions were ridiculously small for the price. $28 for a fisherman's basket, the same size as a kids meal in the valley. No free sauce for customers dining in, which is a crying shame for any fish and chippie.. you pay for everything here.. won't bother next time now that I know, will just stick to subway instead.

  • David Jones Thanks to

Ordered crumbed scallops . Over cooked again . Second time this has happened. When your paying $$$ for them , then you should expect the person who's cooking them to be able yo cook them properly. Scallops in season you look forward to them nicely cooked not dry practically burnt. And service was pretty poor aswell . I'll give em a miss from now on . Looks like you can only get good ones cooked up the east coast ‍♂️

Best grilled fish and fresh oysters I think I have ever had. I normally don't eat at fishmongers, because the smell of the production process bothers me, but this place had zero fishy smell. Yes, there were flies, like there are at any open air food area in Tasmania. Cheerful, rapid service. Will be back!!

Hands down best fish and chips in australia and probably the best fish and chips I've ever eaten! Signage was clearly displayed by the roadside otw to midway point as australia's best fish and chips and damn they weren't wrong at all! Fresh oysters too. Staff was super friendly and smiley as well. MUST TRY! Oh and did i mention they have heart warming awesome seafood chowder soup as well? Super generous with seafood portion!

Walked a couple of kilometres here for the oysters before our flight. Fresh and decently sized, although there was a little pricing premium due to the location. Great place to catch a snack before flying off, although it isn't the most accessible from the airport's departure terminal.

My husband always order the same Fish & Chips as it his favorite here. Strangely, my favorite at this place is their beef burger coz it’s nicely done and packed with bacon, fried egg, pineapple, beetroot & a fresh side of salad. The beef burger is huge, juicy & just nicely charred. All their seafood dishes are also very fresh & I would also highly recommend their lobster dishes.

  • Donte Rennie

they lied about the size of what you get. The man said it was a lot bigger then what we actually got. The food was rich with oil and tasted uncleaned and over powered the fish and was not eatable and was sickly. I will Not be coming back here again

We ate here before heading home. The food was good and we enjoyed it but it felt over priced. We got 2 pieces of red emperor, 1 with chips and 1 with salad, 4 calamari rings and a potato scallop and it cost $75. While it was nice we couldnt justify the price tag for it, I wouldn't pay that amount again for it. I've included a photo of the portion size for reference.

Been here three times twice in two days even. Close to the Hobart Airport, so you can have a bite while waiting for a flight, or sit outside very nice n calming area. They have Live crayfish n abalone, plenty of fresh fish to choose from with an eating area inside. The fish is cooked well with a yummy batter, and service is great....

Work trip flight was delayed.. asked the Uber driver to drop me to a restaurant near the airport. He recommended and brought me to this place. Staff were very friendly and helpful at recommending what I should have for lunch. Seafood was very fresh, tender and flavorful. Would definitely recommend this place to others. Thanks TGS!

  • Rosanne Webb

Disappointed, ordered battered flake, 3 potato cakes and chips. As the photos show flake and potato cakes were dripping in oil, the oil appears to be passed its best. The piece of flake was minuscule, made the trip to the supposed best, on this occasion this offering was far from the best. Poor effort. Poor product, poor value.

The lobster is fair in price and is average in flavour. It is fresh indeed. The fish basket is average as the fish smell is present and the calamari and scallop seems over cooked. It may deserved the best fish and chips in 2017 but I doubt it isn’t right now.

Just got the family pack was over priced for what it was, no potato cakes so got replaced with dim sims which were well over cooked as well as the scallops and squid rings. The fish was gross over cooked on some bits under cooked on others,

A bit disappointed as they claimed it as the best fish and chip. Fish plate was good but squid was a bit too cooked, salty and a bit off coz it have a bit funny after taste. Dining area a bit too small, nice outdoor sitting and nice staffs.

The best fish & chips I've found down south. The batter on my fish was so light & crispy we had a late lunch and it was a public holiday. Highly recommend popping in here, we will go out of our way to eat here again

Great place to start or end the Tassie journey indulging in Tassie seafood. A casual place with friendly staff right next to where all the car hire drop off / pickup point.

The best battered fish in my life. Chips need to be seasoned more but everything else's amazing. People who worked in the shop was so welcoming us kindly.

Seafood was good and yummy. But portion size was not enough according to the price. There is parking outside the premise. You get cooked food and fresh fish as well. Friendly staff and prompt service.
