August 2022: not much has changed here, other than a decent effort to attract new tenants when vacancies occur. Disappointed that the walkthrough from the former Harris Scarfe has been removed, along with the upstairs retail. Other than this, it seems to be a decent regional style inner city shopping arcade New owners have invested a lot in redeveloping this shopping centre. Looks sharp and stylish and attracting higher end stores. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Updated April 2022: with Harris Scarfe pulling out of their newly renovated store, it has been broken down into smaller stores including a newer, larger Adair's. H&M and Target are now the drawcard box box retailers, with many smaller local and national brands taking residence. The food court, now long gone, is sadly missed, and it would do the Venue justice to bring back some quality food and beverage outlets. That said, Nikko Nikko and Coal River present well upstairs.
Right in the center of Beautiful Hobart l. Everything you need in one spot . some of the best coffee and great muffins at the muffin break . and for the kids there is the best fairytale clock that chimes every hour playing " The cow jumped over the moon" . The kids will jump for joy when they see the dish running away with the spoon . An old school animatronic clock that will make the adults feel like a kid again . it's a must see . Only 300m from the picturesque water front great photo opportunity. Lots of shopping . Mt Wellington ( real name is Mt kunanyi ) is a 15 min drive from the mall. Mount Wellington is sacred to the true locals of Tasmania the Aborigines . Officially kunanyi . incorporating its Palawa kani name Aboriginal: Unghbanyahletta or Poorawetter.
In its long history, this has always been an eclectic mix of shops with entrances to a number of larger department stores coming off it. There is now a small food hall in the lower area that used to be a "sit down and chat area" that still contains the famous primitive "animatronic" hourly clock display based on the Cat and Fiddle nursery rhyme that the Arcade takes its name from. It frequently becomes quite congested, especially near the bottleneck "hole in the wall" McDonald's at meal times.
a bit small but a cozy place to visit. every hour there is music and moving deco on the wall in the middle of the arcade, kids love that. best spot to see it is on the first floor in front of target. will be nice if it can be linked to centre point and woolworths building on the other side. because winter in Hobart is really cold and windy and sometimes rain, it will be good if people dont need to walk out from one arcade to another, so everyone can keep warm and keep dry all the time.
Wowsers trousers, what a lovely place. There’s lots of money been spent here! The open area gives off fantastic lighting. Sometimes it’s a little bright but I’m usually wearing sunglasses anyway. I love walking through here once I get off the bus, I like to see the new shops being built and I usually run into a friendly face or two (Dan mainly). I think the whole place could do with some more green foliage though. You’d be very lucky to work here.
Great shopping for all your needs- food and dining like several cafes, fast food like McDonald's, Asian cuisine, Electronics and Gaming stores like JB hi-fi, Reject Shop for bargains, Target, chemist, nail salon and many more! We come here almost every week either to shop or dine or both! The only thing I noticed is, more high end stores have popped up while Valley Girl and Crossroads have closed down, what a shame!
I am very displeased to say that I was enjoying my lunch at the cat and fiddle food court with my friends chomping away some maccy D's waiting in anticipation for the renowned cat and fiddle over the moon display only to discover it was 2 minutes late... not only has this thrown my days timetable completely astrew it has thrown my respect for the arcade into the empty ditch of Myers broken rivulet floor...
Was a bit disappointed to see there isn't the fountain or the cat and fiddle up on the wall that plays the tunes and dances at certain times of the day.My Mum used to give us a few coins to toss in the fountain, then we would watch the show.So I don't know why they are still calling the arcade by that name. Maybe it should be renamed "Dunkin Donuts Arcade", seeing that's what has replaced it
Wait for the hr to tick over and you will be delighted by a familar nursery rhyme. My family and I enjoy the view from up on the first floor. If you find yourself waiting the children all seem to enjoy watching the doughnuts and treats being made/prepared below. My partner who used to watch it as a child loves to relive and share the magic with his own children. Please, never take it down!
Such a huge area that has such huge potential and yet it has been filled with primarily clothes shops so it is generally quite less than happening. Why on earth for what reason did they remove a food court I don't know if it wasn't that this place still has the original cat and the Fiddle clock setup I would have given them one star.
Changed a lot from when I was growing up. Could once drive a car along the laneway and see in the open area the cat and fiddle display up on the wall go through its mechanical animation on the hour. Has over the years had a roof put on it and been turned into a shopping walkway and eating area. Seeing it brings back good memories.
Currently under renovation, this is the draw card for many children. The cat and fiddle has been going strong since i was a baby. I now have grandchildren of my own. It is a spellbinding couple of minutes when in action. Nearby eateries and the lure of target toys close by. It is a MUST see when you are in the area.
Why? Top of the hour, everyone looks fwd to the display. It goes for ~15 seconds, it's not the correct time, there's nowhere to sit, and then you have crying kids again! So much potential for this community centric performance, but just needs some love! Pls rejuvenate this iconic generational musical!
In the heart of Hobart's CBD. Children love watching 'the cow jumping over the moon' on the strike of the hour. Music plays and the cow appears behind the Fiddle and cat. (Only goes for about 30 seconds though). The arcade has two levels with shops and cafes. Worth a visit.
It's a good shopping mall to wander through. Mainly clothing shops and the toilets aren't the best. It's a good connection between the Elizabeth St Mall and Centrepoint but has lost a lot of the original character. Look for The Cat and The Fiddle on the wall on the center.
A great place to browse and relax in the various shops and open areas with a lovely regular rendition of the cat and the fiddle nursery rhyme. However the current construction in the area has harmed the entertaining and enjoyable atmosphere of the centrepiece of the area.
The arcade is popular with a good variety of shops. The biggest downfall is that there is no food court with a mix of food shops to choose from. After removing the old one a new one was promised but never happened. There is also a need for more women's clothing stores
Good selection of shops. Reasonable prices. On the hour the clock chimes then the cat plays his fiddle to the tune of the rhyme and the cow jumps and the dish and spoon also appear!! You have to be there early because this display only runs for 20 to 30 seconds.
It's ok, just don't get shanked in the mall, or have everyone walk into you because they're looking past you and they mow you down and don't keep to the left because they're better than you, and mainlander transplants who now think they own the place.
Visited & had a good look & shop at Christmas/New Year. Recently modernised, great range of up market fashion shops/services over 2 huge levels, right in the centre of the city. Easy convenient parking. Why wait? Have a look next time you're in town.
I came here as a child and the animated clock remains in my memory very vividly. The Arcade has changed a lot since then, becoming a boutique mall but the cat and the fiddle remain. Please take your kids here and make sure to be there on the hour.
How the cat and fiddle dances every hour is cute but there are hardly ever seats. Most of the time, those sitting at the seats aren't even eating anything. Let alone something from one of the nearby vendors. There needs to be more seating areas.
Interestingly arranged shopping area, shops are well supplied and the layout is quite spacious. There are quite coffee shops to make a short break in between spending money People in general were polite and friendly, shops staff helpful. …
Not as quaint and charming as it used to be but you still get a small crowd of people, especially kids, gather around at the top of each hour to watch the clock on the wall perform its song and animation. A must see for every visitor to Hobart.
Extremely unsafe building practice above the food court. Workers on the level above installing glass panels without adequate protection. Should they had been dropped, would have fallen on eating patrons below causing serious injury or death.
The Cat and Fiddle song plays with animated characters every hour and is a cute little break in the hustle and bustle of the city, still brings a smile to my face even after 45 years to be in the right place at the right time to catch it.
Its OK - it's a shopping mall...The animated nursery rhyme that comes to life on the hour is worth it for little kids and nostalgia buffs but other than that a fairly standard mix of fashion/coffee shops and nothing out of the ordinary.
Nice shopping arcade in Hobart, with a special Cat and Fiddle hourly clock performance in the little food area. Centrally located in CBD between Centrepoint carpark and the Argyle street carpark. Good range of shops and good atmosphere.
I'm not a city person but there are plenty of niche little shops and some nice grassy areas near the central carpark. The traffic isn't too bad but the construction work is really annoying. I try to avoid the place as much as possible.
It has got a lot better over the years. It looks so much better after the Renovations. I really feel it has gone up market a bit. Really has got better. The store choice is better as well. But the do need a better Food court for sure.
The place has changed dramatically since my first visit about 50years ago, mostly for the better. Bit sad to see the fountain gone, replaced by a small food court, but it's good to see the original cat and fiddle are still in place.
Nice shopping arcade Plenty of stores Always clean and tidy A shame it’s in the CBD as you have to pay for parking !!! Plenty of similar shopping centres in close by suburbs with free parking !!! No limit on time of takes to shop
Another purely nostalgic review. The clock I've watched so many times as a kid and it was lovely to see it again as an adult. Lots of shops, little nooks and crannies around the place. Never change, Cat and Fiddle, never change.
A little quirky with a playing of the old nursery rhyme "hey diddle diddle the cat and the fiddle" played on the hour complete with moving characters... It'll keep the kids occupied while you have a cup of coffee or a feed...
Good light and decor, with a variety of chain stores. Often changing and improved by the owners who obviously take pride in providing an excellent shopping experience in a clean and pleasant store and arcade environment.
Parenting room downstairs is large, quiet and comfortable. Change tables, one toilet, sinks, a microwave, comfy chairs and a few play items on the walls. A really good place to hideout if you are in town with children.
A variety of clothing stores. A small food court at the bottom Of the complex with donut king and muffin break. The cat and fiddle clock plays a tune every hour which is entertaining for kids and big kids too.
My favourite Donut King at cat and fiddle next to Meyers new outlet .Harris scarfs great for mens and ladies clothing Household appliances and kitchen needs. Great shopping area in centre of Hobart.
I hate the clock it's unbearable to hear but at least the kids like it. The staff at donut king don't do proper food preparation and hygiene look from the top floor were the clock is and look down
Some good shops including H&M Target Katies. Lots of clothes places. Has access to Myers. Supermarket woolworths is short walk through mall. Public toilets includes disabled and baby room.
Upgrade after Myer fire has done this area a world of good. I grew up in Hobart and am glad to see "The Cat and the Fiddle" still goes around each hour entertaining another generation
Pretty bog standard arcade mall. The Cat & Fiddle clock is amusing for the kids. It actually chimes and runs it’s display about 3 minutes past the hour currently as of February 2018.
Located in Hobart City in the plaza. Everything you want to buy is here and very well priced. Plus a cafe for a sit down and a coffee. Sooo many stores!! It's my one stop to shop x
Coming from the North West, I loved all the different shops. Also impressed that staff in most of the shops were making sure customers checked in and were all friendly and helpful.
An excellent little Shopping Centre with a feature of the moveable Cat & Fiddle workings within the clock! Found in Hobart! Wheelchair access is available & restrooms accessible!
Lots of good stores, clean and tidy, and lots of parking nearby. A little crowded at times, such as in the food court area, where it was hard to get around. Overall not too bad.
Have loved Cat and Fiddle for years. Have watched it grow and evolve but I do miss the Food Court that was on the first level. Was a great place to et and to meet with friends
Disorganised array of mediocre shops. Food court crowded and noisy. McDonald's is there so expect lots of school kids. Target and Myer have entrances to this precinct.
Nice shopping mall. I got to see the cat and the fiddle animated clock. Saw it when I was a kid, now I got to show my children. Nice and clean mall. Lots of variety.
A vast array of books not found in commercial chains along with great fiction and children's books. The cafe is as good as the bookstore and peacefully quiet.
It's really nice to watch "The Cat & The Fiddle" play every hour, also yanno, lots of different stores for everything you could want to shop for in one place.
Hey diddle diddle, The cat and the fiddle, The cow jumped over the moon; The little dog laughed To see such sport, And the dish ran away with the spoon.
A few different stores, very minimal food but it’s okay if you like McDonalds. for shopping at it’s also okay, a fair few shops but nothing too special.
Great variety of stores . And a great reminder of memory's of the cat and fiddle clock. But a bit disappointed that the MacDonald store was unavailable
Liked taking time to walk around and see shops we haven't seen before. Great easy access for parents and all people no matter your age. Good facilities
Great shopping experience with a variety of different shops and a bite to eat as you watch the cat and fiddle. With Centrepoint just across the street.
Great to see the clock and watch it play. Good choices in the food court with plenty of seating. Good shopping centre with a good variety of stores
As per usual, cat & fiddle is a great place to go if you don't have anything else to do! Could probably do with more toilets and open late as well.
Decent arcade with a range of clothing options and a reasonable range of eating options. Includes places like Dangerfield, Donut King and Smiggle.
Decent clean place to do some quick shopping. Mainly it's good as a through fare. If you are going there specially, finding parking will be hard.
Cool experience for the kids, about 30 seconds of music be show. With popping in if your in area, probably wouldn’t go out of my way to visit.
They've got everything you may want. Clothing, accessories, hair, beauty and so on. This can be the one of the biggest shopping mall in Hobart
Historic and grand it's the heart of little Hobart. Sometimes you see police there but mostly I eat things and look down into that big drain.
Very clean! Very busy! Lots to see and we loved the clock that gives the arcade it's name! "Hey Diddle Diddle, the cat and the fiddle..."
Enjoyable little mall. My husband wanted to show me the Cat & Fiddle as he remembered it from his childhood. Nice little Cafe under it.
Mid-sized two level shopping mall with mostly clothing stores n a food court at the centre. Few visitors wearing masks in May 2022.
Great atmosphere. Always look forward when I fly over from Victoria. Look the clock brings back great memories of my childhood.
Car & Fiddle houses the main shopping area in Hobart. The ICONIC shopping arcade is very close by and definitely worth a visit.
Great place in the heart of Hobart for shopping, food and drinks, good to see everyone wearing masks and doing the right thing
Nice little food court with Target, JB HiFi, Reject Shop, Macca's and others and the Cat and Fiddle clock chimes on the hour.
Convenient location. Access from multiple streets. There's plenty of choices in clothing, accessories, and lifestyle stores.
It's nice to walk through every morning on the way to work oh hey if I review this will you leave me alone please google.
Easy spot to shop. The mall has some known brands like H&M, Myer, JB and others. Also a range of coffee, juice and food
Was good to see and hear an old nursery rhyme play every hour at the cat and fiddle arcade in Hobart tasmania
Stuffy, consistently disgusting toilets. Taps too short to be useful for hand washing. Very poor facilities.
Being a lover or all thing retro and fifties It was enjoyable to see the cat and fiddle clock do its thing.
Decent stores in SC with Myers and Target. Foodcourt is quite small and not various range of selectionz.
Seems nice and clean, good selection of shops, and nice place to sit for lunch (if it's not very busy)
Loved The Foot Locker in Hobart, the staff are great and go out of their way to help. Thanks guys!
Many an array of shops and free undercover parking for the 1st hour. Amazing for a Capital City!0
Clean, modern, reasonable variety of shops. Couple of coffee shops, a McDonald's and Muffin Break
Amazing, lots of stores to visit. Love the hourly chime, brings a smile to many faces around me.
If you are in Hobart, stop by and see this go when the clock strikes at each hr. Super cute
A great improvement to how it was some years ago though it's a little lifeless upstairs.
Love this place. Great variety of shops & can always find what you're looking for here.
sin bin enough to fill your palate, whether food or shopping . they have you covered
Good service at a number of places. Prices are reasonable with tasty food available
Definitely improving on this space. Expanding the food courts would also be great.
A shopping arcade ..... novelty for young ones to watch the cat and fiddle show
Some great shops, and love the cat and fiddle clock that chimes..so adorable.
Always Enjoy seeing the Classic Iconic clock and the Nursery rhyme music.
It is a small shopping area but you could find what you are looking for.
Nice walk and good array of Main Street and no Main Street shops
It has a lot of good quality shops lots of items to choose from
Plenty of stores with extra side alleys. Lovely smaller city.
Great place I always go there when I'm in the city of Hobart
A good place to shop and convenient parking and food nearby
Good selection of shops. Clean, tidy and fresh atmosphere.
